Re: IOS 14.5 lacks mask unlock.
14.5 doesn't lack mask unlock; the watch has always been a component of it from day 1. I don't think it's a ploy to sell watches, but rather the "mechanics" of it.
The watch can be unlocked once the phone recognizes you w/o a mask (or by your code), and will stay unlocked as long as you don't take it off. This is an extension of that - it uses a partial FaceID (because most of your face is ...
Data caps make mobile video less relevant
With data caps and data pricing, mobile video on Verizon is largely irrelevant far as I can see.
More appropriate
Now people can stop "liking" that Grandma passed away, etc. That always seemed inappropriate.
Re: What would be nice...
A phone that could work with any carrier sounds great in theory, but I don't see it happening for technical reasons.
Basically, while the chip has all these capabilities, it takes more than the one chip to have a functional radio. There are various antennas which have to be tuned to the different bands, receive amplifiers, power amplifiers for transmit... And a bunch of other parts. Getting all that stuff packed into a phone on all those different frequency ...
Re: Nice
The speed sounds great, and look at all the cool things you could do with it.. But in reality, it'll just help folks blow through their data allowance more quickly. With the average 2GB plan, it certainly won't take long.
Re: Catching Up
I was trying to demonstrate a history with Android. For "apples to apples", I've tried a Galaxy S5, still had Android issues like before. Got rid of it in favor of the iphone 5s.
Let's just agree to disagree. Those who like Android, use it. I found what works for me and I'll use it.
In retrospect I knew shouldn't have posted here. :-/
Re: Catching Up
I'll begin by saying I think Apple are a bunch of jerks in how they do business. I'm not a fan.
So I've used both, Android and an iPhone. I've found that while Android is light years ahead in specs and features, my iPhone does a better job of doing what I need, without giving me grief.
I didn't want it to work out that way, I was a huge fan of the green robot. But after using Android for several ...
Cool!
This rocks! That's one app I missed from Android when I switched to iPhone, it's good to have that function again!
Re: Family Plan Impact
No. It only applies to unlimited data, a type of plan you can't purchase anymore. Only people who still have an old grandfathered-in unlimited plan can keep it and continue to use it. Verizon is trying their level best to get rid of said people/plans, because they feel it affects their network negatively.
If you're on "tiered data", where you pay for "x" GB of data per month, this doesn't apply to you.
Been there...
I've had the problem of third party charges I didn't add or use when I was a Tmo customer. I solved it by switching providers.
Re: FINALLY!
Looks like it will be in the future! Can't happen soon enough!
Cool!
So you get a plastic chassis and a better camera for less money, nice deal! Put this camera into the aluminum bodied One and it would be a winner! 8)
FINALLY!
One of the few things I detest about my iphone will FINALLY be fixed! WAHOO!!!
It's actually a good deal
Some say the dock may not be compatible with the next model, but nobody ever said it would. In two years with the next phone, get the newest dock too. It'll probably be better anyway.
The cool part here is you get phone and tablet functionality, and don't have to pay the carrier extra for having it. If that saves $10 per month in access fees, you're good for $240 of the price of the equipment. Not too shabby!
Re: Wow Verizon!
I agree, the call quality is awful. Anything that improves it is a good thing! Of course, I rarely use it to talk on anyway.. :)
The Apple/Samsung patent war is stupid.
Well, it is. They're all a bunch of weenies.
Re: YAY
It may not be such a good thing. I have had AT&T wireless and landline in the past, and some of my customers are stuck with their data service for their offices.
In all cases, the customer service has been horrible, so if DirectTV ever provided good customer service, that'll be a fond memory.
Customer service doesn't matter... Til you need it.
Nevermind..
Ok, nevermind. I just read an earlier article here on Phonescoop. It is 4MP. Still. Wow. Oh well.
Main camera specs?
I have a feeling they haven't improved the camera from 4MP, because they explicitly don't specify what it is (thought the HTC website states the FRONT camera is 5MP). It would be absurd, but HTC has this thing for making a FANTASTIC product except for any one random thing...
Let me add that I really want to see HTC succeed! For years I was a huige fan, and had the HTC phones, from the T-Mo SDA through the G1, MT3G, ...
I'm no lawyer but this seems crazy.
Push technology has been around for decades. Our patent system is broken.
No problem as long as...
No problem, as long as T-Mobile controls the new company. Sprint tends to go "traditional" and status-quo, while T-Mo is upending the industry which is good for consumers.
Jeez
For the sake of full disclosure: I'm an iPhone owner (because it fits my needs and I like the camera) and an Apple hater (because they're a bunch of overpriced jerks). That said:
 HEY APPLE! QUIT BEING SUCH DOUCHEBAGS!!!!

Really Artemis? NO MATTER how many? So if 6 billion people were using one cell, all of them could get full LTE speeds? You did say NO MATTER HOW MANY!!
You people think I'm being stupid, but they said no matter ho wmany. They said it, not me. ...

I could have used this law last year lol. I did not read the entire article but I wonder how this would work out for those who purchase their phones used, would they need a bill of sale to show their service provider?
Next thing you know, smartphones will have a title and you'll have register them like a dang car.
Well maybe they should...
If robbery is the problem, maybe the state of CA should issue more concealed carry permits, they are known to stop robberies in general. After all, people get robbed for more than just their smartphones.
Here in the Southeast, we don't have nearly the problem with robbery/mugging that CA and the northern states have. Why? Because almost any law abiding person, from a college kid to an elderly lady, might be armed. Simply put, attempting robbery of an armed victim ...

Nobody says apple is perfect, but they're sure as hell a lot faster at fixing bugs than any Android OEM. I love android due to it's capabilities, but at this point there are too many hands in the pot causing slow updates and bugs appearing on some phones but not others.
My Galaxy Note II is a prime example, since the 4.3 update, i've had three replacements due to a bad WiFi driver and nobody knows what's causing it, ...

I have a bad feeling this is going to be a horrificially stupid idea.
I'd say. Considering:
1. Phones aren't free. They're actually rather expensive.
2. Verizon doesn't do anything for your benefit. Everything they do is done for one purpose: to make them money. If you benefit as a side effect, fine, but the main purpose is to make money for them.
That said, somehow, this doesn't jive. The numbers don't add up. Someone has to pay through the ...
Let's hope this doesn't happen
Let's hope this doesn't happen, because T-Mobile is shaking things up in the wireless world and threatening the status quo. If they keep it up, there will be - gasp - competition. And that bodes well for the customer!
Re: hehe.
Imagine the fun you could have on that software development team!!
Set it up so when someone puts in "Where is the bathroom" for translation from English, it returns, "Your mother is a dog and your father wears panties" in German or whatever. Many lulz to be had!
This is what happens...
This is what happens when powerful people who don't know what they're doing make decisions about things they don't understand.
Seriously though, isn't there a concept of "you're not qualified to make these decisions" in the courts somewhere?
What's next, network engineers presiding over court cases? lol.
Re: Video ads? They gonna pay for the data usage?
Missed that part. At least they're doing that much. Video ads still suck though.
Video ads? They gonna pay for the data usage?
Video ads? That's a short sighted solution, and I bet it drives people away. Ads are annoying, and video ads are REALLY annoying. And in this case, they'll cost FB users money! Not smart.
Good and bad
I'm glad they're doing what they're doing to make viewing the images safer, but I liked being able to save bandwidth on my phone by only opening images if I needed to see them. This would have rocked back in the "unlimited data" days. :)
Re: Translation
I believe you're spot-on correct. It's all about profit. And if there are no new customers to profit from due to saturation, there is only one answer: Take the customers you have, and squeeze harder. Because 7.3 billion (2012 AT&T) in profit just won't do!!!
Re: All I can think of is Apple..
Yeah, Apple are a bunch of jerks. Definitely expect sue-age over the new USB connector.
However not all who use Apple stuff are fanboys. I switched to iPhone a while back because it does a better job of doing what I need, but I still think they're a bunch of pricks. Kinda like Verizon.. They get the job done and get it done well, but wow, what a herd of peckerheads!
Contract free?
Are these the actual prices for the phone, contract-free, unsubsidized?
So I wonder..
I don't mean this in a bad way, but what's the point of finer and finer screens when they're already at pixel pitches past what the human eye can perceive? I already can't pick out the individual pixels on my buddy's S4.
Re: Blackberry Revival?
That might be their intention. But you can't be secure from the NSA - they won't allow it.
Re: Removable Battery & Removable Memory = More Sales
I'd agree 100%. The things I loved about the HTC phones I owned in the past were the quality build, good camera, and easy to replace battery and SD card. Why they went away from that winning formula, I'll never understand.
Even Samsung gets it; the S4 has both a removable battery and removable memory card. It also has a good camera. HTC took a huge step back with their new 4Mpix camera (whatever they call it and market ...

If I may give you a suggestion, it would be to call HTC or email them directly as I have done(I'm very serious). Writing a very blunt and to the point letter on a tech site such as this one, will do no good. Go right to the source.
Good point.. I have actually always liked HTC, my Droid Incredible was just that - incredible. I suppose I could send them my suggestions. They'll probably ignore me, but at ...
