I'm having the same problems. I switched from a Treo 750, because I didn't need an extra $30 required monthly bill. I have to say for a non-smartphone, it's quite impressive.
I use hotmail for email. The only way I see avoiding the $5/mo charge is book marking my inbox in my browser. I have a pop3 email account forwarded to my hotmail as well. Not sure how it would handle using hotmail to access the pop3 to my hotmail ...
