Thanks for the detailed explanation. I never would have figured all that out :)

Question about transferring upgrade eligibility
Nov 22, 2012, 9:25 AM
in the Verizon forum

I have a family plan with two lines. The primary line is eligible for a discounted upgrade at the end of December while the secondary line is already eligible. I plan to transfer the eligibility from the second line to the primary so I can upgrade now. My question is what happens to the upgrade discount on the primary line? Does it transfer to the second line? Also, might the NE2 discount still exist ...

Re: Corporate stores can't sell new phone releases?
Nov 22, 2012, 9:15 AM
in the Verizon forum

So here's an interesting scenario. I went to the local corporate store on 11-21 and they had the Droid DNA available. However when I attempted to buy it (apparently I was the first person who tried) they discovered that it wasn't entered properly on the computer system (can't say more specifically what was wrong) and so they couldn't actually sell it. So I called another corporate store and told them about this. They said they ...

Thanks for the reply. I guess I was expecting the stores to be paying more attention given how much buzz there's been about the DNA on the web, but whatever. As long as they have them on the 21st then no problem (and if they don't I'll come back and order it online).

Fair enough (regarding the training), but what I was more curious about was the staff not knowing about the Droid DNA and one of the managers saying they're only given 24 hours notice RE new releases. Is that normal?

Corporate stores don't know about new phone releases?
Nov 17, 2012, 3:50 PM
in the Verizon forum

I went to a couple of corporate stores today wanting to confirm they would have the Droid DNA on the 21st (it's official release date) and neither one knew anything about it. They just said if the phone was released they would "most likely" have them. One manager added they don't know about releases until 24 hours beforehand. So I'm wondering how can this be? I thought the stores trained up their people on new ...

How often do people need to talk and surf at the same time? I've had an Incredible 2 on Verizon for over a year and I can't think of a single situation where I needed to do this. I'm sure some people sometimes need it, but is this considered a primary feature that people would switch carriers for?

Re: Time For My Upgrade

The price of the Rezound has been dropped to $80 on the Verizon website. I believe this is in anticipation of imminent new phone releases. I would look to the third party suppliers, such as Amazon, for even deeper discounts soon. It's a good time to consider this phone, especially since it ships with ICS.

The Rezound does look like a good phone, but I haven't actually used one. You might want to wait another week as it sounds like new phones for VZW are going to be announced. That will change the landscape and might result in a price drop on the Rezound as well.

I don't see the carriers every doing this voluntarily - it will require legislation. Someone will have to sue the carrier for overcharging them for service while using a non-subsidized phone. Boy, is that ever going to take a while :)

Really, your "slaughter" comment made me laugh out loud :) When I upgraded last year the additional cost was $20, and it was called an "early upgrade" fee (I was within the last four months of the two year contract). Now I guess you get hit with the $30 upgrade fee regardless of when you do it? I don't know if this is just gouging, but it's clear that everyone hates it and it's ...

Just walked through the upgrade process online (Galaxy S3). I didn't pull the trigger, but I noticed that "unlimited email and web" was still an option. If I had proceeded I apparently would not have been forced to select a 2GB data plan. What do you think about that? Am I misunderstanding something?

Just occurred to me to ask if the upgrade transfer can be done in a Verizon store? I can see how to do it online, but it doesn't "stick" - when I log back in the two lines have reverted back to their original status.

The GS3 looks like the phone to beat at this point. I'm seriously considering upgrading, but I'm honoring my rule of actually seeing and handling a phone before taking the leap. I'll be in the Verizon store on the 10th to test drive it. I currently have the Inc 2 which has a 4" screen. I guess it's possible that the GS3 will feel too big, but I doubt it :)

Jul 6, 2012, 9:56 AM

The Inc 4G is available now and the subsidized cost is $149.99, not $299 as some thought. I've been using the Inc 2 since last year and I see the new 4G Inc as an incremental upgrade - dual core processor, LTE support, ICS and Sense 4. That's all good, but unfortunately doesn't stand up well against the competition, in particular the Galaxy S III. For only $50 more the GS III offers a larger screen ...

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I did notice the upgrade fee, which is now $30. Last year when I upgraded it was only $20 and I believe the store rep called it a "convenience fee" (convenient for whom? LOL). Regarding the data part of the plan, it is currently unlimited. Will upgrading push me into the new Shared Data plan? I don't use much so it won't be a big loss, but I just ...

The lack of LTE support in the Quad core processor is obviously critical - I wasn't aware of that. Agreed that it's not about the number of cores per se. As to quad core not performing any better than dual core in the "real world" I would just add "yet". Cores are an aspect of the architecture and their purpose is to improve performance, but yes that can't be taken for granted.

I just checked the pre-order page for Verizon and you're correct - 1.5ghz dual-core with 2 gigs of ram. I wonder why they chose to drop the quad-core? Still, it looks to be a great phone. It should be in the stores next month and then we'll start getting user feedback. 4G hardware + ICS is getting more mature and hopefully the 3S will be really solid. I can't get interested in the iPhone, but the Galaxy IIIS has really good specs and is getting great reviews. Quad core CPU, 4.8" screen, good battery life, 1080p video, it goes on and on. If I were ready to upgrade this is the phone I would look at first. I believe in laying on hands though - when it becomes available go to the store and test drive it.

Verizon 4G deployment schedule

I recommend you go over to androidforums.com and read the threads in the Gnex section. Unfortunately there are ongoing issues with the phone that don't seem to be isolated, such as poor battery life and poor reception. Apparently the latest ICS update doesn't make any difference. I've been tempted too, but I'm going to wait for the next wave. I currently have the Droid Incredible 2 - no 4G but otherwise a very good phone, ...

Re: Location Services

Thanks for the reply. I wonder how enabling these services impacts battery life? It sounds like the Google and Verizon Location Services are working through the 3G network which of course is already ON, Vs the standalone GPS which uses an additional circuit (and probably more battery). Does that sound right? There's probably no point in trying to figure out how these services impact privacy, since when you carry a cell phone there isn't any.
