Re: Motorola Droid Bionic vs. Other Verizon 4G Phones
Jan 21, 2011, 6:25 PM
in the Motorola Droid Bionic (old) forum

Some notes about the differences in terms of the SOC used. Droid Bionic/Tegra 2: This is a dual core phone built on CortexA9 technology. The CortexA9 implemented new technology over the CortexA8 other than the capability of multiple cores that improves performance without pulling much harder on the battery. A single CortexA9 core will outperform a similarly clocked CortexA8. Thunderbolt, et el/Snapdragon: This is a single core phone built on Snapdragon from Qualcomm. The current Snapdragon core is similar in performance ...

Re: Replacement For Droid X
Jan 21, 2011, 6:09 PM
in the Motorola Droid Bionic (old) forum

The Droid X will still be a top phone on the 3G network. If pricing is different between 3G and 4G, then the Droid X will continue to be a 3G flagship model. Otherwise, yes, the Droid Bionic will replace it.

Re: Why no gingerbread?

Like most handset manufacturers, Motorola has opted to take advantage of the openness of Android and inject their own crap (ie: Blur) into it. As a result, the injected crap has to be ported to each new version of Android and then tested for stability. Case in point, HTC's Sense crap use to not run AT ALL in any distribution of Android running the JIT Dalvik engine (default to on in Android 2.1+). They had to spend a lot of ...

iPhone comes early next month. More than likely the Thunderbolt does as well. I've read in various places the Droid Bionic may not come until April.

Re: Memory
Jan 21, 2011, 6:03 PM
in the Motorola Droid Bionic (old) forum

I'm pretty sure Motorola has checked and rechecked the listed specs at this point because it also listed 1gb of RAM originally (immediately after CES announcement), which was incorrect (it has 512mb, unlike the Atrix). More than likely the demo unit had less storage to cut cost.

Re: Is battery a deal-killer?

This is because it is correcting the bad behavior of some app that you installed. It's better to just not use the app. I get 2+ days of moderate use (some calls, texting, light browsing) out of my Droid Eris without an automatic task killer. I get at least a day out of it when I'm using navigation heavily (Waze is a nice navigation app, btw). I get no less than 8 hours of use on really heavy usage (navigation, ...

Re: Apps not showing in market
Jan 16, 2010, 3:56 AM
in the HTC Droid Eris forum

My post is a little outdated now as Google/Verizon has since fixed my issue. I saw a comment that someone on a Droid was able to load Dexrex. This tells me that it's on the market, but not available for the Eris. This can happen if the target platform is higher than what is being used. Many apps target Android 1.6 rather than 1.5, which is running on the Eris, so they are not available. When the Eris is updated ...

I was really referring to the automatic task killers. I've seen a lot of reports along the lines of "I installed and now my alerts don't work" or something else stops working correctly that's part of the core system. You're breaking design by using these tools.

I read somewhere (don't remember where, it's been a couple weeks) of various update schedules for the Eris. One of them got the first update date right, and claimed another date was in January. It also claimed one of those updates would be 2.x. We can always hope that it comes that soon.

If you mean it doesn't roll, mine rolls just fine. If you mean that you roll it and it sometimes doesn't respond, I've noticed you have to put a slight amount of pressure on it (not a lot, not even close to pressing the button underneath) to make it register.

in the HTC Droid Eris forum

If you watch what apps you are using and figure out which are causing problems, you can avoid dangerous apps like task killers. With moderate use of my Eris I get at least 2 days of battery life and I have no app killers installed. I found some IM apps prevent the device from sleeping even when it's just in the background. If it can't sleep, it can't go into low power states. 100% awake time means you only get, ...

Google maps makes use of the compass in Streetview. It doesn't seem to work well on my Droid Eris, to the point that I may be headed to a store to compare.

Re: Visual Voicemail?
Nov 23, 2009, 12:26 PM
in the HTC Droid Eris forum

There is a stub application for VVM on the Droid Eris app menu. Note that getting the full app is free, but there is a monthly service fee. This is not a Droid Eris feature, but rather a Verizon feature, so it's not going to show in the manual.

Re: Returned after 1 1/2 Weeks
Nov 19, 2009, 11:01 AM
in the HTC Droid Eris forum

Did you get the wrong device forum? Motorola would have nothing to do with the HTC Droid Eris. In any case, I have absolutely none of the problems you listed with email on my Droid Eris. Granted, I don't use gmail email on my Droid Eris, I connect to my own email service (where my gmail account is forwarded) through imap. CDMA 3G services (Sprint and Verizon) do not allow data and voice services to work simultaneously, unlike GSM based services ...

Well, as I had mentioned, I hadn't actually tested it, just saw the claim. In any case, I experienced youtube playback for the first time yesterday and it was actually pretty good once I set it to play back in high quality mode. I have a couple videos I need to convert and copy to my Eris and I will really test it out then with something of much better quality. As for video recording, I haven't really felt a ...

Re: Camera issue
Nov 16, 2009, 11:02 PM

What kind of lighting? If it is indoors with about average household lighting, this phone will not take great pictures. It has no flash or other type of lighting assistance. As far as image stabilization, as far as I know, it has none. Don't mistaken a high MP rating to mean high quality, it's still a camera phone camera. It just happens to take higher resolution images. You could try reducing the resolution to see if it helps with speeding up ...

Re: 1 MUST HAVE FREE APP
Nov 16, 2009, 10:57 PM
in the HTC Droid Eris forum

I had to elaborate in another thread about the no sleep issue, so I'll do it here too. There are many apps that prevent sleep that don't necessarily need to be avoided. Many apps prevent sleep while running, such as games. There are many apps that prevent sleep with a background process that require it, but don't constantly run in the background, such as media players. Apps expected to run full time in the background should not prevent sleep, however. On ...

They are shown when you hit the Install button before actually installing. They are only shown if the things they warn about apply, so not all apps show the warnings. Also, mind you, I said I'd avoid no sleep apps that run in the background. I should elaborate on this. There are many apps that prevent sleep that don't run in the background, such as games, and there are apps with a background process that also prevent sleep that are ...

Apps not showing in market
Nov 15, 2009, 3:29 AM
in the HTC Droid Eris forum

Is it me or are eBuddy and IM+ missing from the market? Supposedly these are apps that would not show up for dev phones, but as far as I know, Droid Eris is not a dev phone, so I'm suspecting some weird region, device, or carrier block.

Re: Battery Life
Nov 15, 2009, 3:27 AM
in the HTC Droid Eris forum

Supposedly Droid Eris has a newer firmware than the Hero. As far as I can tell, the SMS problem that was supposedly there before is not present on the Droid Eris. I saw no appreciable difference in awake time or battery usage between using the built in tool and a third party tool. The best advice I can give is when you are installing your apps, pay attention to the warnings. If one of the warnings states "prevent phone from ...

Re: 1 MUST HAVE FREE APP

If you read the SDK documentation you will find Android has a built in auto task killer. There are two types of tasks in an application, an activity and a service. An activity is the part of an application that the user interacts with. A service runs in the background. Neither of these are required for an application. Not all apps will have a service, not all apps will have a user interface. Activities do not run in the background. They ...

Re: Battery Life
Nov 13, 2009, 1:00 AM

I've been looking for ways to extend battery life and actually wrote up some notes on my site about it. I'm getting a good amount of battery time, but it still seems lower than it should be for a device rated at 2 weeks standby time. I understand standby means lowest power state, but I should be able to get at least a couple of days with my usage. I'm still playing with settings, apps, etc, to see what more ...

Nov 13, 2009, 12:55 AM

While the Droid Eris does feel smoother, bear in mind the processor in it will make it suffer still. Supposedly video recording and playback is not very good on the Droid Eris, but works great on the MotoDroid. I haven't had a chance to check that claim out yet. My old phone did great with video recording and playback so it would be a huge letdown if that was a problem with the Droid Eris. Just something to consider. I'm ...

If you did not like typing on the Hero's soft keyboard, you will not like the Eris either. They are essentially the same device in different shells. I have the Eris and my roommate has the Hero so I've had my hands on both.

You don't follow threading too well ;) My post was in response to uscingulair who claims the Pre is crap compared to the Droid, claiming it had an inferior CPU, display, etc. I was simply pointing out that hardware is not a factor in comparison between the two devices since their underlying hardware is mostly the same. In any case, you can confirm my information using google. That's how I found it to begin with. BTW, the Cortex A8 can ...

Re: 1 MUST HAVE FREE APP
Nov 8, 2009, 1:29 AM
in the HTC Droid Eris forum

I don't buy it. Given the way Android works, running multiple apps should not be a big drain on the device, unless the app is poorly developed. I would only recommend this app for Android developers, other users should not need it. For normal users, this is about as much snake oil as those Windows programs designed to free up memory so you don't have to upgrade, and can likely have the same consequences when messing with the system ...

Re: gps
Nov 8, 2009, 1:15 AM

Google maps with turn by turn directions was released with Android 2.0. Droid Eris runs Android 1.5. Unfortunately, this means you will have to find another app until HTC releases an Android 2.0 update.

Re: Just ordered the Eris and now I'm wondering...
Nov 8, 2009, 1:14 AM
in the HTC Droid Eris forum

Since HTC uses their own UI (Sense UI) for their Android based devices, HTC's own distribution of Android 1.5 varies from Android 1.5 itself. A lot of people feel HTC adds a lot of value to Android 1.5, bringing a lot of it up to date to the level of 2.0, and in some cases beyond 2.0. Supposedly Android 2.0 had some performance improvements. However, bear in mind that HTC's Android 1.5 is still Android 1.5 underneath the hood. Apps ...

Re: compared to the droid
Nov 7, 2009, 1:36 AM

Ahem...Motorola Droid has the same processor/SOC as the Palm Pre. That processor happens to be the fastest being used in the market, as it is the first integrated ARM processor with superscalar processing. The 550mhz Cortex A8 from ARM used in MotoDroid and Palm Pre is upwards to 40% faster than the 528mhz ARM11 being used in the Droid Eris and various other HTC devices. When you present a broken and uninformed argument just to knock another device, disrespect is ...

Re: Verizon Droid Data Plan, Tethering and Exchange Email Will Cost You
Nov 7, 2009, 1:27 AM
in the Verizon forum

Android based devices are smartphones. Verizon isn't the only service provider with voice and data plans for smartphones that differ from "dumbphones". If you buy any smartphone through verizon, you will be faced with higher fees due to expected usage of such services being higher than a regular phone. This isn't special Android data plan pricing.

It sounds like it was bricked. You can try taking it to a Verizon store and having it reflashed, but being purchased third party, I don't know the implications of fees.

Re: Internet audio questions please.
Jan 6, 2009, 4:58 PM
in the LG Dare VX-9700 forum

Youtube is providing the mobile video streams, which are encoded to be streamed over low and unreliable bandwidth. As a result, the quality sucks. The streams have to be 3gp or 3g2 encoded for the Dare so it can't use the flv streams. Unfortunately, this means you're stuck with the low quality on youtube with the Dare.

Re: V03 vs V05
Jan 6, 2009, 4:53 PM
in the LG Dare VX-9700 forum

Camera has some enhancements, but more fixes are needed. Audio problems have been fixed, including with bluetooth. Some multitasking problems have been fixed. The txt message system was fixed (v03 would not read messages from tinypic at all, v05 does). Touchscreen is much more friendly to use (may have to recalibrate after update). Overall, it just feels better. I'd recommend using v05 over v03.

Anything that taxes the CPU will cause music to pause briefly, as well. Discovered this while looking at storage info while listening to music a little bit ago.
