Cell Numbers Being Published?
Apr 26, 2005, 11:24 AM
in the Rumor Mill forum

I've heard now from 2 customers and an employee's parent that somehow, someone is going to publish everyone's cell number. Now from what I've seen/heard, the only companies in the US that release their customers numbers to outside sources for lookup or telemarketing are Cingular/AT&T and T-Mobile. Sprint and Verizon are adamant about not releasing the numbers, again from what I've seen/heard. Has anyone heard anything re this? If so, post what you've heard! Thanks!

Rich Brome said: Most towers (just talking about the vertical structures) are only owned by one company, yet hold base stations (radio equipment and antennas) from multiple carriers. So it's certainly possible that some Nextel base stations are on towers owned by Sprint Sites. ...But that is a totally different thing from Sprint owning any iDEN equipment, or there being any kind of iDEN roaming relationship between Verizon and Nextel. I am pretty sure that Sprint and Verizon own exactly zero ...

Are you referring to future agreements after a move to CDMA? we now that now Nextel's roams with no one as they are only IDEN, could you clarify? In the non-urban areas (at least here in the NE outside of NYC/Philly) Nextel's coverage is carried by Verizon and Sprints towers. The ...

Points to ponder.....

Yet again, the RadioShack monster gear-head raises his voice to speak.... Nextel purchased PCS CDMA frequencies this year from the FCC, ostensibly to test a whole network switch from iDEN/TDMA. Why would they do this? --Limitations of TDMA: Classic 2G-era digital technology, limits # of users/cell. The problem that Nextel has had in recent years with their expanding customer base is how to fit them all into groups that are compatible with each customer's network base (clients/vendors/friends). The ...

Correct to a point, jungle. 3xRTT is an experimental overlay VZW is trying to enhance their ExpressNetwork speeds. Right now, EN speeds are around 40-50k (per website) w/ burst up to 144k. They want to enhance the speed up to higher than dial-up 56k, so they're trying the 3xrtt. For now, however, the 1xRTT is considered a 3g upgrade compared to the regular CDMA standard. Fone, do your research. I guess by your bad spelling and grammar that you're not ...

T-Mobile is a good carrier if you're looking for an international capability, or if you live in a MAJOR metropolitan area. If you live in the 'burbs or if you live in an outlying area, forget about it. The dropped calls will harangue you most of all.

The ability to do well on reception depends on your carrier and the technology of your phone. Based on some experience playing w/ some handsets, here are some of the best receiving phones I've seen: #1: Sanyo (SprintPCS) #2: Audiovox (VZW) #3: Samsung (VZW, SPCS, T-Mobile) I really need to give props to the guys at Sanyo. Their phones have the ability to pick up on fringe areas that other phones would simply say out of range. Audiovox is another good receiver, but ...

Caught ya again, handyman. PCS is 2.5-3g technology. Currently, there are 2 major carriers using the PCS band: VZW and Sprint, both for their high-speed data services. SPCS decided to build exclusively up there, and VZW incorporated it when they went to 1xRTT. Actually, T-Mobile is the only GSM carrier using the secure version of GSM. Both Cingular, AT&T, and the most of the other world-wide GSM carriers are still using one form or another of the original GSM technology, ...

Verizon ACTUALLY is coming out w/ some great new phones. There are plans in the works to actually drop Nokia (b/c Nokia wants to concentrate on the GSM market instead of the CDMA market stateside). Instead, Samsung, Motorola, and LGElectronics are teaming up w/ VZW to make some awesome new phones, taking advantage of Verizon's 1xRTT high-speed network. Nothing other than that has been released to us RadioShack associates/mgrs as yet, but that's the real skinny. (BTW, handyman, do your ...

in the Article: FCC Warns AT&T Wireless on Portability Problems forum

According to the article I saw on Yahoo about it, there were on file 65 complaints. What gets me is that the vast majority of them (again, according to the reporter) were from AT&T :P. Working for RadioShack, I know that both Sprint and VZW have put numerous efforts into making sure that things go easy when you want to port. AND, if you notice, it's the companies that stand to LOSE on the porting issue that are giving the ...
