I've often wondered when something better and more intuitive was going to come along and replace SMS as we know it...thank god this has finally come to light...finally we will know if someones phone is on and has network connectivity to receive a message, finally we will know that a message has been read (for when you text flakey people) and most importantly thank the lord we will have more than 160 characters to work with. Alltel's GSM Roaming and EVDO Coverage Answers...
When Alltel bought out Western Wireless they got a GSM network that Western Wireless built just to make money from roaming revenue, because Western Wireless had their own customers on CDMA. Since Alltel now owns it Cingular and Alltel have a roaming agreement to let Cingular customers roam. Here is a map of the Alltel's current coverage for Axcess Mobile Link (1X) and Axcess Mobile Broadband (EVDO)...

I didn't want to get into this to start anything but the Motorola V710 is a GOOD PHONE. Yes it has its hardware glitches and sometimes locks up but it is the best phone I've ever used. When Alltel first launched service in the early 90's the only prefix we had to chose from was prefix 572 and that prefix wouldn't allow caller-id to work. See alot of carriers lease numbers from the local phone company in the area to save money, and in turn the caller id won't work because of some technical reason. The clicking is the system trying to find the phone. Every carrier has there own method, Nextel uses "Please hold while the Nextel subscriber you are trying to reach is located" and Verizon just inserts fake rings, but Alltel uses that clicking noise to let you know the phone is being located...

The LG is ok, a little thick for me tho. The LG lacks a speaker phone in which the Audiovox 8910 has. Also the LG rings alot louder than the Audiovox, but if you don't work in a noisy enviroment the Audiovox would be ok. But to me, features and looks alone, I'd go with the Audio 8910/Flasher V7. I know this is vague, but I hope it helps...

You know it would be cool to go to a better provider like Cingular or T-Mobile, but Cingular isn't availible in my area and T-Mobile isn't availible in all of North Carolina. So it looks like I'm stuck with Alltel...

Alltel has always been Alltel thats what I've always liked. Plus I read somewhere that Alltel is the biggest Regional Carrier so I doubt they will ever merge with Verizon, but hey who knows...only thing we have to gain is faster data and better phones, we already have Verizon's coverage.

Look for FCC under Specs on the main page of this phone and then click the number to the right of FCC.

If you look at the pictues on the FCC website the last revision of the phone has Alltel logos. So I'm assuming pretty soon with Alltel.

I plugged mine in tonight while I was on the phone and it made the sound when I plugged it in but the battery bar never did anything and the phone didn't say charging. I've been talkin on my phone before, and it beeps saying low battery, plugged the phone in while I was using it and the phone still went dead and cut off. I don't think you can talk and charge...it will still go dead.
