Transferring contacts for new customer
Mar 19, 2010, 12:38 PM

I'll soon be making the switch to ATT when my current plan expires. I'ts been a loooooonnnng time since I have switched carriers and I'm not fully up on all the services available during the process. I thought I read a comment here that mentioned the corperate store transferring contacts. Does that mean when I make the switch, the stores have the ability to transfer all the contacts between the other carriers SIM and my new one? ...

I wonder how much of this is regional... Out here in the mid-west, the 3G works great in the coverage areas, and you can get 2G in some pretty remote places. They don't have the near omni-presence of Verizon, but they are close. There are even some areas where they beat Verizon (despite what Verizon's coverage maps say...)

That is why I posted what I did. I wanted to show that rather than just creating an app that makes Americans even lazier, there may be a valid buisness model behind the idea.

What you don't seem to realize is that USAA serves only military members and some federal government employees. While they are in the top 20 of all banks in the US, they only have one physical location in San Antonio. The vast majority of their customers live all over the world...you can't just drive to the drive-thru. This is a great option and might bring me to use them for more than insurance. They have gone out ...

If the Verizon page works like the AT&T page, then yes it does. If I want to use my company discount, I'll have to go into a store and do it the old fashion way. I really don't mind because I want to play with the phones in person before buying them.

I had a feeling the company rate was better than the DoD rate. Thanks. This is quite a bit different from the discounts that Sunshinegirl posted. Is that because she was seeing the government rate, or because her listing was outdated? This isn't a knock on anyone, I'm just trying to figure out which one is the most current info. Thanks all for the help.

My company discount with other providers is acutally better than the government/military discount. That is why I'd like to see what it might be.

I'm not a government employee. I'm employed by a company that does work for the government. In my case, I work side-by-side with government employees and thus have a government e-mail address.

I am shopping for a new cell phone provider and would like to see what type of discount I can get through my employeer. I don't know anything about this particular model, but I can say that of all the phones I have owned, the simple Motorola flip have performed the best as a phone. The UI might not be the best, and they may not be the most fashionable thing on the market or had many cool features, but I could get a signal where most others couldn't, voice quality was always good, and they held up much longer than other devices.

Not so fast. I tend to agree. I've been using cell phones for 10+ years now. The only bad experiences I've had were all LG phones...and I've had several. Build quality/materials was apalling and signal reception was poor at best. I've had none of those issues with the Samsung, Motorola phones I've purchased or the generic no-names given out free by a provider.

Same here. What I don't understand is why they bother selling it in the stores, when the nearest 3G coverage is 200+ miles away. I've never seen a single person with one. Reminds me of when I lived in Hawaii and I was in a store that sold XM and Sirius radio despite the fact the nearest foot-print for coverage was 4000+ miles away on the main-land.

Agree. And frankly I am really surprised at how limited their 3g coverage is. Smart phones are becoming more popular by the day and to use those devices to their full potential, you really need the speeds that 3G provides. Verizon and AT&T are talking about going to "4G" technologies and bandwidth, yet T-mobil hardly ever rolled out 3G. I think they will very soon find themselves ranked with the regional carriers rather than the ...

Thanks for the heads-up, but MMS doesn't do anything for me. Honestly I don't see the point or the huge hype behind MMS. To me it defeats the purpose of messaging...short quick bursts of data to communicate. Besides the more people do that, the heavier the load on the network and all the users suffer. If I want to send someone a picture, I'll e-mail it to them...

I too am wondering about this, but it is really hard to determine unless you talk to someone who lives in the same area you do. Cell networks vary greatly from region to region. If you read C-Net much, they always complain about the reception and data speeds in the San Fran area and they blame AT&T. However, here in St Louis, everyone I know with an iPhone has had no problems what so ever with reception or ...

Can you apply a Family text plan if one phone is an iPhone?
Jun 30, 2009, 10:12 AM

I was playing around on the ATT website to see what it would cost me if I move to ATT when my current contract expires. While running through the options, I noticed that there were two seperate texting options, one for the iPhone and one under family voice plan. So, my question is...if I have an iPhone and another "normal" phone on my family plan, can I use the family messaging to cover both phones, or do I have to get ...

Any problems with screen going to landscape mode?
Jun 30, 2009, 9:13 AM

I am considering moving to the world of the iPhone this winter when my current contract with another provider expires, so I went to an apple store to try one out. For the most part I really liked what I saw, but one thing that bothered me was the fact that the phones don't seem to like going into landscape mode. Wasn't that one of the big changes to the 3.0 OS? The Apple store I went to had 3 ...

Right now I have the 1000 min Family Plan with three lines, unlimited family texting, and unlimited data for my wife's Blackberry. I have the military discount so my total comes out to $129/mo including taxes. I would be going to a 700min plan and my wife is dumping her Blackberry because she no longer needs it. I qualify for the military discount under any of the providers as an Active Reservist. I believe my civilian employer ...

I would love to stay with T-Mobile. They have treated me very well, and their plans are fairly flexable for a great price. Good to know in case I go back. I didn't realize that roaming agreements were regional. I've never had anything bad to say about T-Mobile as a company, but I am now running into coverage problems that are going to force me into going with someone else this winter. I will miss the pricing and fantastic customer service.

This week, I was on a buisness trip to the Shreveport/Bossier City area of Louisiana and had constant coverage issues. There were several places were I would have no coverage at all and the phone would drop into it's network searching mode. When it did this, I could see it detect at least two networks that had 4~5 bars with of coverage yet it would not connect to that network and would instead, just go in to a "no ...

When is this LTE conversion supposed to take place? My contract with my current provider runs out in January. The coverage in my area are about equal between Verizon and AT&T. Based on phone selection both me and my family are leaning towards AT&T, but an iPhone may sway us to Verizon. I can't wait forever... I happen to like the iPhone for all the capabilities it offers. Are LG's really that good these days? I few years ago, I had a couple of LG's and the experience has kept me away ever since. The build quality was terrible...very thin fragile plastic. The call quality and and signal reception was miserable too. I've only sent back two phones in all my years of cellular usage and both were LG's.

Thanks for the info. Are you sure the iPhone dataplan can't be discounted. When I lay out the plan I want on the ATT Premier web site, I pay full price for the handset but get a discount on the voice plan and the data. Is that a difference between what the store offers and what the web site offers? Yes, it was the siren song of the iPhone that is luring me in. Several friends have them and I ...

I think the service is very location dependant. When I lived in Honolulu it was really bad. I constanly dropped calls and hit "black spots". However when traveling on buisness to Tampa, Pensacola, LA, Denver, Tulsa, and Chicago, I had great coverage and no quality issues at all. Here is St Louis it's pretty good as long as you stay in the metro area. You get on the out-skirts and there are a few dead zones. 3G ...

Thank you for your kind offer. I wish I was in Texas to give you my buisness ...unfortunatly I am in the Illinois suburbs of St Louis. From what you are saying though is stores can and will support customers that use corperate/military discounts on their plans?

Support available for Premier customers
Jun 2, 2009, 12:52 PM

I am elegible for discounts through my employeer or my military affiliation. However, to use either I have to go through ATT Premier. I was an ATT customer in the past and my accounts were through Premier back then too. At that time customer service hours were much more limited than "normal" customers, and corperate stores were unable to help me as well. I found the telephone customer service to be really poor compared to that of ...

If that is the case, I doubt they will ever bring land-line service to that area since they are actually divesting themselves from the landline phone buisness.

FIOS would all depend on whether they own any fiber in the ground in the Charlottesville area. Also, I belive FIOS requires you have fiber optic cable running right up to your house. U-Verse is a good alternative that doesn't require a fiber path the entire distance. As for traditional POTS phones, I know that Verizon Communications has recently started to shed that part of their buisness in order to focus on wireless. Here in Southern Illinois ...

Very true. I didn't know many people knew that. From what I was told, the system Nextel rides was actually a nation-wide radio network developed by Motorola. For reasons that I have forgotten, Motorola then sold the network to Nextel. The frequencies they use are registered for land-mobile radio use. Its really a radio network carrying cellullar traffic in addition to the push-to-talk radio traffic it was originally created to carry versus the other providers who have push-to-talk ...

The problem goes beyond cinderblock vs brick style construction. If you find yourself in an older building that has a large ammount of steel support beams and other metal in the construction, you'll probably have trouble too. There is a grocery store I frequent near my home that is located in an older brick strip-mall and I go from five bars to nothing within a few feet of the door. It really goes back to the frequency being used. ...

The difference could be in the phones too. Were the two of you using the same phone? For the last year I have been using a Samsung phone. There were many buildings I had no coverage inside. After getting fed up with a slider phone that would always answer itself in my pocket because of the exterior buttons, I went back to my back up phone...a three-year old Motorola. My old Motorola gets bars one to ...
