I guess that's what I'm saying. If you're waiting for the iPhone to be released on the CDMA platform, my best information says it ain't gonna happen. It could be that with Verizon's foray into LTE next year, MAYBE you'll see it on the Verizon service. Seems that the iPhone is still very much tied up in legal maneovering betweeb AT&T and Apple.

The only differences for the BB Strom 2 will be updated flash, a better camera, wifi, and no touch click. I picked this up from someone I work with at an agent location. Just passing along the information.

Yep, it sure is...except for all the others! I am so happy to have Verizon in Charlottesville now, I don't have the words to tell you. Sorry you don't like what the most reliable network in the country is all about, but you can vote with your money. Go check out the others. See you on the other side.

in the Alltel forum

Don't know for sure if that's possible with this particular phone, but if history is a teacher, probably not. Once Verizon's software is downloaded into a phone, generally speaking, it can't be used on any other provider. That used to be the case, and I don't know for sure if that's changed, though. Wasn't there recent chatter about CDMA phones being able to work on ANY CDMA provider?

Re: ANY NEW PHONES

What kind of a phone are you interested in using? There are always new phones coming out, although I think from a marketing point of view there might be something special happening at the end of the third quarter when school goes back into session. I couldn't decide on an Alltel phone myself, so I ended up with Verison's Samsung Renown that I purchased outright and had a rep keep my Alltel plan intact by reprogramming my handset. ...

In a word, yes. It does look like the divested markets that Verizon dumped will be going AT&T eventually. Since AT&T uses GSM technology, I think you're going to be stuck UNLESS they keep the CDMA towers going for a while longer, perhaps as long as two years (just an opinion on my part, you understand), when you would ordinarily upgrade your phone anyhow, and IF you want to stay with AT&T at that point, you would probably have ...

The landline service be damned (we have THE minimal plan from Embarq now...not a big deal)...I want Fios for by television and computer signal. Don't get me wrong...I'm thrilled Verizon bought out Alltel and now handles their wireless phone service. I'm sooooooooooo disgusted with the intermittent service we get from Comcast on the computer and television. I was hoping that along with the cellular, we would have an alternative to Comcast. Comcast took over from ...

Any possibility that we might get those other services at some point, or are we just SOL down here, stuck with Comcast for cable and internet and Embarq for landline?

OK, now that Verizon is here in Charlottesville...
Jun 1, 2009, 5:31 AM
in the Verizon forum

As of yesterday, May 31st, Alltel was gone and Verizon was in charge. I've got the cellular part of my ex-Alltel service squared away with Verizon. Now, will Verizon be offering their Fios cable service for Internet and television as well? And a land line alternative? I would prefer to have all of my communications services on one bill if it's cost-effective. I hear nothing but great things about Fios from my friends in the DC ...

Adios, Alltel in Charlottesville!
May 27, 2009, 1:35 PM
in the Alltel forum

Well, we've got just a couple of days to go here in the heart of central Virginia before Alltel is no longer available as an option for new service. In the final analysis, Alltel was a superior service. The phones weren't all that exciting, but certainly more than adequate. When I was outside an Alltel market I never had a problem picking up a signal unless I was out in the middle of nowhere, in a ...

I thought the V9m was one of the nicest looking phones Motorola had ever designed, and I wanted that phone as the upgrade to my V3m. I heard that the software was never quite right on either Alltel, with whom I still have service for a little while longer, and Verizon, with whom I will switch over to shortly. Are you sure you want a Razr 2?

Forgive me, I'm not trying to be a smart-aleck here. Why are you asking your question here? Wouldn't it make more sense to ask one of your superiors where you work? Surely, someone there would know the answer to your question, right?

Here in Charlottesville, VA, I'm hearing May 31. Can someone confirm that? Interestingly, I have a Verizon phone activated with my Alltel plan. I bought the phone outright, I'm getting another "My Circle" number, making 11, and I plan to just stay with what I've got on a month-to-month until there's a reason to make a switch. It's really too bad Alltel is going away altogether, whether it's with Verizon or AT&T. The service is every ...

I wouldn't say "don't hold your breath", but Nokia IS making phones on their own for CDMA again. Just how soon they make one that USCC will use is another story. I love Nokia phones, too, but I just got tired of them not functioning as well on CDMA as some of the other brands. The problem was they didn't have access to the Qualcomm information, and apparently, they do now.

I know this is an old thread that might have been addressed in another, but I have been using Verizon's Samsung Renown for the last couple of weeks in Charlottesville without a hitch on my Alltel plan. I found a good, slightly used one on eBay. Now, all I get is voice service, but for me, that's all I need or want. I love the Renown! Solid phone, few bells and whistles as far as ...

You guys are either missing my point or I'm not saying exactly what I'm trying to say. One more time... This world of ours will eventually be totally wireless. I don't think anyone disagrees with that. Of course there have to be more towers in NYC than the rural areas to handle the traffic. Does that mean the rural areas get shut down completely? Socialism? So what you're saying, if I understand you correctly, is that would be perfectly fine for those of us who travel all over the world to be inconvenienced by not having a phone to access the network we happen to be in at the time. That's ridiculous! What people want, first and foremost, having been in the business for 15 years, is a phone that works as a phone WHEN AND WHERE THEY NEED IT!!! Having a handset ...

So wouldn't a possible solution be what I suggested? Having phones that carry both LTE and GSM chips? We have no control over what another country chooses to do, but if we're going to want to use our own phones over there, seems to me we can build them to do that.

Hey, I'm with you, but why stop with just the U.S.? Add the quad-band GSM frequencies to the LTE, since it's unlikely the rest of the world will convert to LTE anytime soon. If they do, you can dump the GSM frequencies down the road. You know, eventually, we will be using the same handsets everytwhere. The day of the landline and hardwire connection is in the sunset. What still needs to be rectified, in my ...

If you don't need a smartphone, may I recommend the Samsung Renown to you? It has dual-band CDMA for the United States and quad-band GSM for pretty much the rest of the world. I haven't used it outside of the states yet, but I do look forward to doing that. The best part of the phone is just how sturdy it is. Sounds good, too.

Right, Howard. You and I agree. I want to see a system that is universal all over the world. The next post below this mentions something else altogether different that may or may not allow this to happen, but that post's pont is it won't with LTE. I'm guessing that a universal system will not go into effect until perhaps satellite communication, rather than towers, becomes standard. Of course, you're going to really need ...

Then what's the point? I mean, when UK folks come here and they want to use their phone, they're going to be as inconvenienced as us going there. I just started using the Samsung Renown, which is dual band CDMA and quad-band GSM. Seems to me that I could go just about anywhere in the world and use that phone, right? Maybe making phones with EVERYTHING in them may be the only way to go ...

I don't think the difference in voltage has anything to do with the platform, if I'm understanding what you are saying. The European standard of 220VAC is so much more efficient than what we have here in the States. With our 110-120VAC comes the dreaded "60 cycle hum" that is non-existant overseas. As far as LTE is concerned, perhaps those parts of the world utilizing GSM on the various frequencies will come around to LTE, as ...

Hey, family guy, I did what you said, and my Renown is working like a champ! Still have my Alltel plan in effect, and if I have to change over to the Verizon side, I'll do that after June 1st. Right now, the phone is working just fine for voice communications, which is all I need. Thanks for the information.

It does to the best of my knowledge. If you're currently with Alltel and you're wanting to go with Verizon before you're absorbed by them, it's my understanding there is no ETF at all, but if you go to another carrier before your contract is out, there is.

Some of the areas mentioned like DC and the BWI Airport...I've never NOT had a strong Verizon signal in those areas. Did you reset your phone for a certain coverage pattern? Just asking... Insofar as being billed for roaming here in the U.S...Isn't that a function of the indicator? If you are in an area where there is no roaming agreement, the indicator (a triangle on my phone) will not flash on and off. It will ...

Hey, Bleds, it's not a matter of being bitter. It's a matter of what people need and don't need. Now that the market is saturated and companies don't want to put up towers in places that's never seen a cellular signal because it's too expensive to do that (and there ARE plenty of those places, my friend), they'd rather "enhance" existing service by selling people what they want to sell them, not what they need. The ...

I'll be doing the same plan with Verizon that I've been doing with Alltel...$59.99/mo with the 10 MyCircle numbers. Yeah, I know...I only get 5 with Verizon, meaning theoretically, I'll burn more anytime minutes for the five freebies I won't have. Not a problem. Everyone of the five people on my list that I had are Verizon people, and now, I get to call them for free anyhow. Maybe I'm the exception to the rule ...

Very nice! So Verizon is liable to get stuck with some dogs until LTE kicks in? No, maybe that isn't completely fair. I'm hearing good things about the Intrigue. The last phone Nokia made for Verizon before they outsourced actually wasn't too bad of a phone, either. Still, their GSM product has the CDMA product, on balance, smoked, n'est pas? It's not that I need the bells and whistles that 4G will genuinely ...

Recent development? I remember hearing not that long ago that Nokia was going to stop building CDMA handsets altogether and just concentrate on GSM, at which they excel. I hope their CDMA knowledge is better than it used to be. Their phones are still the most user-friendly in the business, which was the attraction I had with them.

I've worked for both direct and indirect channels, and indirects, to the best of my knowledge, cannot help you. The thing that impressed me the most about the Samsung Renown is how solid it felt. I've been using a Moto RAZR V3m for the last couple of years on Alltel, and for my purposes, it worked fine. Well, now, Verizon will be here in C'ville within the next couple of months, and the Samsung is the only phone Verizon has that is NOT a Smartphone and has GSM capability, quad-band, no less. I'm generally partial ...
