Relax. I've done enough homework in my lifetime. Whatever you care to call it, AOL was in control. AOL took advantage of its widely overvalued stock and took over Time Warner. Anyway, the whole point is that a "smaller" company can buy out a bigger one. It happens quite a bit. The way ATTWS is going, the stockholders might be happy to see someone make them an offer.

Thanks, oakie. Can you tell me anything about T-Mob coverage down here in the Willamette Valley and also in the Cascades? I'm on 850 TDMA now and coverage is actually pretty good where I'm at.

Actually, smaller companies buy larger companies all the time. Look at AOL-TimeWarner. I have no idea what is going to happen, but if Cingular wants to buy ATTWS and can cobble together a deal that is attractive to stockholders, it could certainly happen. But it may be that the finances of all these wireless carriers is in such bad shape that the debt load would just be too much. Maybe we are headed toward one or two ...

If you're happy with your Verizon service, I'd stay with it. Most important criteria to me is local coverage in the areas I travel in. In the very long run, it appears all systems will eventually be CDMA - either CDMA2000 or UMTS, so the only thing that is certain is further changes in the future.

T-Mobile coverage in Western Oregon & Washington??
Nov 19, 2003, 11:56 AM

Any feedback from existing customers on T-Mobile coverage in Western Oregon and Wash? They supposedly serve this area, but their coverage map looks like an eraser smudge down Interstate 5. TIA

ATTWS to take over our service - what to expect?
Nov 19, 2003, 11:51 AM
in the AT&T Wireless forum

ATTWS will be taking our service area from CellularOne (Rural Cellular Corp) in a swap deal. Based on the press releases, it will happen in "early 2004". I can't get ATTWS or Rural Cellular to talk to me about it. So, just curious as to what we can expect in the way ATTWS will deal with our existing plans, rates, etc. Will they offer incentives to get us to sign new contracts (we're out of contract ...

Thanks. The Ericsson T62u doesn't seem to be listed on the ATTWS website any longer, at least that I can find. Is there a replacement or other phone with GSM/TDMA/AMPS?

Verizon Coverage - Western Oregon??
Nov 8, 2003, 3:17 PM
in the Verizon forum

Any opinions on the level/quality of Verizon coverage in the Pacific Northwest, especially Western and Central Oregon? Our current carrier (Rural Cellular) is trading our area to AT&T Wireless, so this may be a good time to start thinking about switch - I'm ready for a new phone anyway. Verizon's plans seem more expensive than ATTWS, at least for what we're looking for, but I need to do a little more research on that.

ATTWS - TDMA or GSM for Western Oregon?
Nov 8, 2003, 3:13 PM
in the AT&T Wireless forum

Since Cellular One (Rural Cellular) is swapping our area here in Oregon to ATTWS for another area in Alabama, we will be switching carriers soon, like it or not. Since I'm ready for new phone anyway, I'm looking for input on current GSM coverage versus TDMA by ATTWS in the Northwest, especially in Oregon. Should we go with TDMA phone or GMS or a combo if we go with ATTWS? My current phone is old - TDMA/AMPS. I ...

Your phone has to cover your carrier's band. Has nothing to do with unlocking. Check this website for a list of phones that can be used with your carrier. You basically stuck with the phones your carrier wants to carry.

Re: The future of CDMA

GSM uses TDMA for its physical layer so the evolution to GSM for a carrier using TDMA is a natural one. However, the next GSM step is to WCDMA, also known as UTMS. This is a CDMA technology. AT&T Wireless says this is their step after GSM/GPRS. However, this technology is incompatible with any existing GSM/GPRS or TDMA phones or cells. So it will be a major transition and a bloody mess. For existing CDMA ...
