I have the same problem. I looked all over the place for that little icon, and couldn't find it. Finally, I just figured I'd go for it and unplug the device without shutting anything down. All my pictures were safely saved on the computer, and there was no data being sent to or from the device, so I figured it would be "Safe". It seems you've gotten pretty far in the process, but for those that haven't, I'll explain the whole thing here.
Assuming you haven't rearranged your menus, go to Settings => 1. Wi-Fi => Wi-Fi Power On.
After Wi-Fi has been turned on, go Back to the Wi-Fi menu and select Available Networks. You should find your home network in the list. Select Options, and hit Connect. Enter in any password you might have on your home network, and you should be ...
