Delete the first blank line or add a letter. Why this works: just like when you hit reply to an email and it adds a blank line at the top for you to write in, forwarded text messages from nextel phones add a blank line at the top of the message for you to write in. Other carriers see the blank line, register it as a blank message, and chop the rest of it off.

Or you might consider temporarily going with a Nextel phone for international use, such as the i930, it's pretty simple now to flipflop between the networks.

The Nextel Blackberries are still the only Blackberries with Direct Connect, so if DC is your thing then I wouldn't recommend switching. However, there is now a DC like service on the Sprint network which is a VOIP technology called qchat which is interoperable with Nextel DC. So far no Blackberry has that, but who knows, they might come out with one.

Even if they do manage to create a direct talk mode for CDMA -- which would be a MAJOR technological advance, just like the fast PTT QCHAT that runs over the internet on the Rev A network is a major advance-- direct talk users on CDMA frequencies would still not be able to scan for channels in use by emergency personnel during a disaster when the national network is down, which is one of the main attractions of Nextel ...

The Pro 700 is a pure CDMA phone even though it is branded as having Nextel Direct Connect; they are now using the Nextel name for all push to talk features regardless of network.
