Good point, and I knew that from the point of Vodafone/Verizon and Softbank / Sprint. The article didn't say if at&t would operate in Mexico as at&t, but it sounded like it. I was thinking of a global carrier that has the same branding and phones wherever you go. Do you think that will eventually happen?

Using MobileMe Without the iPhone
Mar 20, 2010, 10:43 PM
in the AT&T forum

Bare with me while I get to my question. I have Apple MobileMe and I like it a lot. I've been using it for almost a year now. I know the web mail interface can be slow at times :( I use my iPod Touch with MobileMe and it's great how the email, contacts and calendar apps on the Touch work with MobileMe. I'm already an at&t customer, and my plan was to get the iPhone for the same features, ...

You are confusing two issues. I understand the policy regarding data usage. Nowhere have I or anyone in this forum said otherwise. That does not mean that the data policy is right or a good business practice. They will lose data customers by having an "all or nothing" policy. Forcing a $30 data plan on someone who has only access to 2G bandwidth is bad form. They could charge $20 now and then raise it to $30 ...

Wow, I can't believe all of the ignorant at&t fanboys. Oh, and I'm with at&t now, but I don't work for them. I understood what he was saying from his original post. He has been with at&t (cingular / bell south) for some time. He is now being forced to pay a $30 data plan even though he is only getting 2G data rates. at&t could have offered a $15 or $20 plan for him instead of the ...

Very true. This is not a very professional forum in terms of most of the contributions, but there are a few good contributors that almost make up for it. A lot of posters here seem very immature and emotional; lots of irrational anger.

in the Article: Rural Carrier Association: Verizon Offer Not Enough forum

I think it's wrong for rural carriers to freeload off of the developments costs of phone makers and larger carriers. This smells of socialism and forced distribution of wealth. If all of the rural carriers want to get together and come up with some of their own agreements with phone makers then they can do that.

Good point about the $20. Before at&t I was with T-Mobile but I wasn't happy with their coverage areas in my home state. I did have the $20 data package which I thought was pretty good. I ended up using enough data to justify that. Of course, that was EDGE and not 3G. I wish at&t had a $20 data plan. If at&t is making enough money on data with their current subscriber base then ...

Jul 4, 2009, 1:48 PM
in the AT&T forum

In the months I do use data it's around 1 MB, which would be $10 (at&t) versus $2 or $4 (VZW). So, a difference of $6 worst case a month. Man, am I a cheapskate or what! Still, $30 a month adds up. Thanks for everybodys input. My hope is that at&t will eventually lower their PPU data rate. I guess that voice plans have reached a point of being a commodity, while data is ...

True, for a $30 fixed montly data plan, different users will use different amounts. If I used that much data a plan makes sense. However, no one has answered my question as to why the PPU data rate is a 5X difference. For PPU, it doesn't matter if I have a "smartphone" or not. If I had to guess, at&t is being more coercive to customers to sign up for a data plan than VZW.

Thanks all for your feedback. I have a PDA phone (Samsung Epix) so the MediaNet plan is not an option, at least according to at&t. Besides, DATA is DATA!! It doesn't matter what terminal device I have. If I use enough data then a plan makes sense, regardless of what kind of data it is. Since I don't use email or apps for my PDA phones then I am penalized for having one. What if your home ISP charged ...

Pay Per Use (PPU) data rates
Jul 2, 2009, 11:34 PM
in the AT&T forum

I am with at&t and I like their service EXCEPT: For the most part, at&t and Verizon Wireless have similar plans and offerings. Yet the pay per use data rate for at&t is 5 times higher than Verizon Wireless. I don't need (or can afford) $30 / month for a full data plan, yet I would use data infrequently if it were $2 / MB instead of $10. At least they would be making more money from me than zero. I ...

I have noticed that other people on web forums have mentioned that at&t ended its roaming agreement with T-Mobile as their roaming contracts end. at&t acquired Dobson (Cell One). I live in Chandler and I have noticed this when driving to Payson and up on the rim country (show low, etc.) I am with T-Mobile and I really like them, but I need better coverage around Arizona. It does seem that at&t is focused solely on the iPhone. I'm sure they feel that any other high end phones would compete with the iPhone. We'll see how many other nice phones they release in the next 6 months.

T-Mobile Data Plans
Sep 23, 2008, 7:37 AM
in the T-Mobile forum

I just went to the TMO website this morning and looked to see if they changed the plans. I noticed that the Total Internet price is now $39.99 per month. I have the Dash and I have the $19.99 Total Internet. Is that still offered but just not listed? If the cheapest is now $40 I'm sure going to keep my $20 plan! $40 seems a little steep. Someone help me if I am misunderstanding ...

in the Article: Cox Affirms Wireless Ambitions forum

Here in Phoenix, AZ, Cox is notorious for being a lousy provider of cable, phone, and internet. They treat their customers pretty badly, and they have an EXTREMELY arrogant attitude. I can't imagine them providing wireless service. They have the nickel-and-dime philosophy of VZW and the poor customer service of Sprint. At least Sprint won't be at the bottom any more!

I work in the wireless industry making cellphone IC's but I find a lot of information here. Sorry if I'm in the wrong forum but I thought this would be the best place to ask. I know that T-Mobile is owned by Deutsche Telekom and that VZW is partially owned by Vodafone. Question: Does at&t mobility have any foreign ownership or investors?

I do RF design for transceivers (radios) in base stations and cellphones. You would need some type of information about the receive sensitivity in dBm as well as the phones ability to handle blocking signals and interferers. You might scour the web for FCC testing or other documents that show this information but it will probably be hard to find as companies want to hide this from the general public. Another challenge is that any given ...

Yes, I should not have waited a year and get angry about it. Part of the problem is that I took them at face value and didn't challenge it too much. I agree it's not VZW policy, but why can't they make it right today? What would you do if you were in my shoes? I paid for a contract but did not get any kind of phone for it, that is an imbalance against ...

Well, you might have missed it in my original post but I called them today and asked just that. But after a year they said take a hike. I don't like people who want something for nothing, but in this case I feel there has been an imbalance in VZW's favor. I just want them to make it right. I should have forced the issue a year ago but the more I thought about it ...

Yes, either way I should have been able to upgrade to a new phone. I was told that I had to USE that new phone. We had a special corporate plan of $20 for 100 local minutes. This plan was left over from the early 90's. It did not have a contract and was month to month. After years of having that limited plan we wanted a change. With GSM providers I knew that I ...

So you're basically saying that I fell for it. If I would have known that, I just would have accepted the free phone anyways and then just waited a while to re-activate my wife's phone and then just said our free phone was broken or something like that.

I am with T-Mobile and my wife is on Verizon. T-Mobile experience: Last year I left Verizon and went to T-Mobile with a 1 year contract but I already owned a T-Mobile dash that a friend gave me. I just had this experience yesterday. I used to have TMO pre-paid for a year before switching that number to a 1 year contract with TMO, at which time I got a new phone. I was told that I could use my post-paid SIM with my older pre-paid phone if I wanted to. Well, that didn't work so I brought it in to the local store. They worked on it for a while and were ...

Re: AT&T in Phoenix

That brings up an interesting issue. With Verizon Wireless I would periodically use *228 to update the roaming codes. I have never heard how that works with GSM/UMTS services. Maybe when the SIM registers on the network it is recognized because the system (towers) are updated. Come to think of it, why can't CDMA be programmed to recognize the ESN of the phone and allow the call instead of hoping all the users remember to ...
