zannalov submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8400:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

Over the last eight years I have owned three different cell phones from three different manufacturers. This has, by far, been the best phone yet. This phone is feature-rich, fairly-rugged, and quite capable. The battery life seems to be excellent, but my other-half reports a dying battery, so YMMV. The only thing I miss, which was standard on Samsung phones, was the phonetic-lookup feature. If you aren't looking for a PDA-phone, this is by far the best model you could choose.

Pros: Reception and sound quality are excellent, the display is bright and vibrant, the buttons are resistant to wear, the bluetooth support is good, WAP support is well above standard, having a "favorites" menu is quite nice, the camera is as good as any other phone camera I've seen, having text messages NOT get stored/erased on interrupt (phone call, incoming text) is wonderful, and the phone comes with more programs built in than I am used to seeing.

Cons: You cannot use MP3s from an SD card as ringtones and you have to program voice-dial yourself (cannot use phonetic lookup ala Samsung phones).

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

SprintEmployee07 submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8400:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Hello everyone. I have read a couple of the reviews on here, and I agree with most of what everyone is saying. This phone is one of the greatest that Sprint has came out with in some time now. Also it is a horrible thing that the selling life only last the short time that it did. I also think that it was alittle over priced, and def had NO advertisement! That one thing that I disagree with some of the people is about the advanced voice calling. I understand that it may not be an option of the phones, but neither is the support for 4MB micro SD card(Which I think it much more important!). If you really think about it, Sprint offers what is called Voice Command(Press and hold *, just like you would 1 for voice-mail). Having said that, I don't really think that having non-advanced voice dialing is really a con, when there are much bigger things to think of as cons. The phone can't do EVERYTHING! But enough on that subject. I think the one problem that I have with my 8400, maybe 1-2 a month, the screen will go a gray color. Now I'm not just talking about the Main LCD, the sub also will go gray and I won't be able to get any incoming calls and of-course can't make any outgoing calls either. I take the battery out for about 20 secs, and then power back on and everything is up and running like normal.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

It's powervision (which is a must for me), it's durable (my adorable 3yr old has a fascination with heaving my fon across the room), it's has an external antenna (great signal strength everywhere so when everyone else's fons have no service mine is kicking high bars), and it's a nice design and color. Even easy menus. But even this amazing fon has one downfall that even drives me (the girl who just wants to text and make fon calls easily) absolutely crazy!!!! I swear I feel like heaving my fon across the room (or just hand to my daughter and let her do it!) everytime almost everytime I am sending a message I hit the stupid end button as opposed to back and panic and hit the stupid thing again. That back button should be moved for my sanity alone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

sircbarkley submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8400:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

All things considered, this is the best phone you can get on the Sprint Network!!

I'm not sure what Rob_in_IT was talking about when he knocks the battery life and Camera quality. If you tweak the settings and turn off ready link you can get 3-4 hours of Continuous Talk Time with the standard battery and 6-8 hours of CTT with the extended battery. Likewise with the camera, you can adjust resolution and quality. I take great pix with my 8400, save them to the memory card, and take the card to Costco to print out my pix. They come out looking great!!

I've had an 8300, a920, M1, and 8400. Of all the phones I've had and of all the phones (non pda - I also have an bb8830 for email) that Sprint offers the 8400 is by far the best!

Pros:
1.3 megapix
60 megs internal memory
micro SD slot
MP3 capability
Bluetooth
flash camera
wireless backup
GPS
loud speaker phone
ready link option
EVDO
unlimited video recording when saving to memory card
unlimited voice memo recording when saving to memory card
external antenna
excellent call quality
excellent battery life
standard and SANYO charging ports
Sanyo quality build (JD Power Quality Awards)
One of the few phones that can run Mobile Pandora!!

The list goes on!

Cons:
8100 looking keypad.
Ho Hum Green backlight
Camera positioning (it should be at the top of the phone like the 8300)

Ultimate Con:
The phone is already at end of life with less than 75,000 units sold :_(

It's sad to see this great phone be discontinued so soon when the 8100, 8200, and 8300 had such long lives.

I believe this phone was the victim of an inflated price and lack of advertisement (the story of Sprint's life).

If you can find an 8400 you should buy it, it will make your Sprint experience enjoyable!!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

rob_in_IT1978 submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8400:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

The Sanyo SCP-8400 is a solid device, touting a 1.3MP camera among its many other features. However, the phone is plagued by a poor quality camera and rather short battery life. Talking on this phone was a pleasure, though.

The Good:

The SCP-8400 from Sanyo has a very comprehensive feature set. Voice quality is tremendous and definitely better than most phones I've used. I like the nice, bright screen that is basically glare resistant. This phone also uses its reception resources very well.

The Bad:

This phone is plagued by unusually short battery life. I tested this by fully charging the battery, then making numerous calls on it all day long. The battery died after just 2 hours and 10 minutes of talking nearly continuously. The camera is another fault of this phone. The 1.3MP camera is very poor quality compared to many cameras out there that are mounted on cell phones. The menu navigation can be tricky because of the number of items present on the menus.

Overall: This phone is a perfect choice for most users looking to go with Sprint for service. It works for me and I particularly like it. Therefore, it gets a solid B+ out of me.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

jwwf submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8400:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I've had several wireless phones, but none of them have ever come close to the SCP-8400. After I got the 2G aftermarket flash memory, I've thoroughly enjoyed using the media player and camera features. I take a lot of pictures for my web sites and since web photography does not (cannot) approach printed-photo quality, the SCP-8400 takes a perfectly acceptable photo for my purposes.

I've also discovered the joys of podcasts. The USB cable and Bluetooth capability make it very simple to keep updated whether I'm at home or work. I like that I can take a call in the middle of enjoying a podcast and when I'm done with the call, my program picks up exactly where it left off. Nice touch!

The SCP-8400 also has a FAR more sensitive signal pickup. I live in a very rural area where Sprint has no towers. The closest competitor's tower is still a fair distance. My previous phone couldn't get a reliable signal ever. This phone always has a strong set of bars so I can use it any time -- not just "when the wind is right". For folks who live out as far as I do, I highly recommend this phone for your Sprint service.

I agree with the poster who said "You NEED this phone". Well done!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

nyisles submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8400:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I picked up this phone in blue/silver, along with a shiny new 2-year Sprint contract, about a month ago for $99. I've always owned super-cheap phones in the past so this one's like a breath of fresh air, especially compared to the mostly awful Moto V265 (all 3 of them) I had before.

Pros:
-----

* Excellent voice quality
* Very good reception, even in spotty areas
* Loud, clear speakerphone
* Good battery life - lasts a full two days or more under moderate-to-heavy use
* Enough features and multimedia capability to satisfy even the biggest phone-nerds
* Full-featured Bluetooth, thankfully not crippled like in Verizon's offerings
* Great-looking screens both inside and out
* Very durable, survived a few hard drops already

Cons:
-----

* Keypad basically sucks if you do a lot of text messaging and don't use the predictive input - if you type even remotely fast, the phone seems to "miss" some of your key-presses for no apparent reason so if you don't pay attention you'll have a bunch of misspelled words
* Also related to the texting, many common symbols (such as apostrophe, dash, parenthesis) are buried under the Symbol menu rather than being readily accessible by pressing "1" a few times... pretty annoying
* Camera is pretty lousy in low-light conditions, even set on night mode with the flash enabled
* Low-battery warning is the polar opposite of the one my V265 had, which isn't completely a bad thing (the V265 would beep annoyingly for HOURS and you couldn't silence it) but the 8400's basically shows up when the phone has about 5 minutes worth of life left
* Can't seem to assign sender-specific ringers/alerts for text messaging and the like
* Wish it had a vibrate-then-ring function rather than vibrate, ring, or both at the same time
* Not the best looking phone, although it has grown on me a bit

All in all, I still have to give this phone a 4.5 of 5. Messaging annoyances aside, it's a whole lot of phone for the money.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

It is very solid feeling, gets better reception than any of the others and is the loudest, by far. in fact, the only negative is that i can't change what the navigation keys do. they come with functions and you can't change it. but that's it. not bad, if you ask me. not bad.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

MicroSD is terrific to have, voice quality is great, external speaker is nice and loud for the speaker (nice for mono listening to music too).

Camera is very usable, I have been taking a lot of pictures with it, you can get some very interesting effects with the built in camera.

Examples:

http://www.baublecentral.com/pics/v/max/840A5655.jpg.html
http://www.baublecentral.com/pics/v/max/840A5522.jpg.html
http://www.baublecentral.com/pics/v/max/840A5493.jpg.html

All the pictures on that site were taken with the SCP's camera.

Battery life is very good, charges up in 2 hours.

Incredible screen quality, very well designed user interface.

Love the USB connectivity.

Cannot say enough nice things about this phone.

Only CON: Unable to get 1 GB MicroSD to work, 512 MB works without a problem.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

racheybee submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8400:

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

I was very excited when the 8400 came out.. but I must say that I was very disappointed in this phone.

the pros are that it technically has every feature that can be used on sprints network, it has power vision, ready link, music store, sprint tv, and bluetooth.

the cons are

this phone was very buggy. I had 3 different ones and experienced problems with the screen. the screen would just go in and out. it was almost as if the phone had powercycled on its own.

sometimes the time and date would pull up incorrectly when you turned the phone on

the voice tags on this phone are terrible when you try to use it with a bluetooth headset. it only recognizes your voice and you have to repeat the name at the exact same inflection and pitch etc that it is recorded or it can not recongnize it.

the music player only plays mp3 files so if you have wma files etc it wont recognize it

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

the2ndflood submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8400:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

The pros of this phone goes as this: Sanyo phones are made in Japan. Which means they are a million times more dependable then some Chinese, mass produced for the lowest bidder garbage. I wish they were made in the USA, but Japan will do. The phone is a really nice size. Small enough to easily fit in your pocket, but still large enough to enjoy watching content on the screen. The 8400 also has a MicroSD card slot. I have 2, 1GB cards. One has movies and TV shows I want to watch.. And the other has all of my MP3's. This makes it so much easier to add and remove content. The phone also comes with 60MB's of memory, so you won't run out of memory while running applications. The screen runs at 240x320 pixels, which makes movies and TV look crisp. The GPS works perfectly. I run Telenav, Garmin, and Mapquest without any problems. Since this is a Sprint phone, you can use pretty much any Java application that you find. I use Gmail, Flurrymail, Opera Mini 3.0, Pod2Mod, among others free of charge. I also use Sprint's Mobile E-mail client and Sprint Power view for free as well. Both are free perks for Sprint customers. I have also read reviews that state there is no outside music controls, which is false. The 2 buttons on the left hand side, and the Readylink and camera button on the right side will control the music player while the phone is closed. As for the music functions of this phone, they are great. I stream Sprint radio and Sirius while I am working out. The phone will rebuffer here and there but it is not a big deal. I would recommend you buy a 2.5mm to 3.5mm headphone adapter. That way you can use a normal headset. I also love how the new Sprint phones have easy access to the (Roam-Only) option. It is nice being able to set my phone to roam, if I am at a place with no Sprint service. I have used Verizon's data network while roaming with Telenav on some of the back roads around me, and Sprint told me roaming is completely free.
GREAT PHONE, GREAT NETWORK!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Faster Internet, micro card, blue tooth, more phone number slots per name and longer life battery. Pictures are excellent and camcorder is OK to send to friends for fun. I am a onion farmer in Ontario, Oregon so I use the weather on demand for instant weather report.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Speakerphone quality is not as good as other phones I've had in the past.
2. You can not use any music downloaded as a ringtone.
3. Crashes, Freezes, Crashes, Freezes. Several times a day now. This one seemed perfect for me. I love music and need to stay connected. I had been holding off for a long time because no phone had the right combination of features.

Pros:
Excellent reception (about 6 miles beyond Sprint's rated service edge)
Micro SD (I spent $25 for 512MB Transflash)
Vibrate mode
Speaker Phone
Color Screen
MP3 Player
Blue Tooth
Great Contact List
Calendar
Wireless Web
Wireless gateway
1.3MB camera
lots more

Cons:
MP3 Player turns off phone mode.
Blue Tooth for mono only
Calendar is several clicks from main screen.
Audio jack is unusual - replacing the headphones is not an off the shelf proposition.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

mcl submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8400:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I had the Sanyo 7300 for 2.5 years and decided to finally upgrade. I really like the phone. I've had fun playing with its features. I got it 30 Nov so I still have their "free" $25 package.
I have three criticisms but only 2 are with the phone.
OK, the one against Sprints TV package. It doesn't include enough "complimentary" channels. Everything is extra cost. I would want a full CNN & Weather Channel feed included. Yes, I know they have Fox. I have no desire to watch the American Nazi Network. Also, I'm a Baseball Fan (Yankees!!!). I could care less about Football.
I will likely keep their $15 package but not the extra cost $25.

OK, the phone"
1. Others have said it. I should be able to use mp3's on the microSD card for ringers. Although I have been able to use http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/ and http://t1mmy.net/phone/phone.html to get around the "having to buy from them ringtone problem" but you would really want a data package before using them. Hopefully a future firmware upgrade will correct this. Oh, BTW, I'm very successfully using a Sandisk 2gb microSD card in the phone.
2. The phone crashes. Like a windows crash. Others here have reported it and I have complained to Sprint.
The phone lost a 1/2 point for each of these two problems. So I'm giving it a 4 out of 5.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
