daddyonthedell submitted this review of the HTC TyTN / 8525 / JasJam (Hermes):

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I haven't reviewed a phone in years, and with good reason. I haven't been able to find a phone worthy of the time I wold have to invest to do a review justice. Since I last reviewed a phone on here, I have switched carriers to AT&T (who I personally recommend after having tried ALL others, especially over VERIZON), and now I have found the best fitting phone to my needs and with entertainment value, and to anyone in search of the same, read on.
Pros:
Too many so I will stick to the main ones-
*WM5 phone originally but upgradeable to WM6 for FREE
*Wifi, Bluetooth, 3G, Tether modem, you name it, it's here
*Awesome screen. Flawless in my opinion.
*Reception is excellent. I live in 3G area, so no issues there.
*Slide out keyboard with big buttons for my big fingers.
*Camera with macro mode and 2mp rez, video recording (which will be my only con below)
*IR port (I'm sorry if you don't agree, but NoviiRemote is still a fun prank to have on your phone, and IR is almost obsolete)
*PTT (Push To Talk), just nice to have the option
*Excellent call volume and external volume, including speakerphone
*Side scroll wheel. This is HUGE for me. It's like having a Blackberry without the crap OS.
*Touch Screen is nice, and stylus fits tight in phone, but with scroll wheel and dedicated buttons, you hardly ever need it.
*Sturdy design, right down to slide mechanism for keyboard.
*Mini USB port. I get sick of having to have special cables for my phone and everything else. Use the same cable to charge and sync as I do my regular camera. Also works with USB 12V cigaratte lighter adapter. So there again, cheaper and smarter.
*Never crashes. Not once.
*Flash for camera, which also doubles as lighting for camcorder. Quality is awesome on both, except...
Cons:
*When you select the largest resoultion on camcorder, audio and video are slightly out of sync.

Visit XDA Developers. This phone is customizable to no extent (search Hermes as well). You will be glad you did.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

(looks/acts like a touch diamond) the software that came loaded originally I'm sure had problems, as most phones of this caliber do.All the upgrades that have been done to mine equate to a very impressive piece of hardware.Great screen quality with a wide variety of compatability makes this easily the best phone I've ever used (the Iphone 3g has been out for quite some time now, I've used it and honestly cannot stand it).

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

cadcraig submitted this review of the HTC TyTN / 8525 / JasJam (Hermes):

Overall rating: 0 (out of 5)

Well if you have read other reviews, you would see that I had asked if anyone had problems with a similar phone that my girlfriend has. Well after double checking, she has this one. Now my question is, has anyone had any problems with the keypad stopping working? When she is trying to text at times, the keypad will not work. When it is supposed to be lit up, it's not. There are also times that she can't even get the keypad that pops up on the screen to work. She has also had problems with the touch screen not working. I wouldn't think this was a problem, except she has only had this phone for about a month or so. It drops calls from where she started with a strong signal sitting in one spot, then the next thing the call is gone. If you have had the same kind of problems, please reply and post a message so I can let her know and see about trading it in on another phone. Are there any recommendations on what type of phone she should get? She loves to text and needs a phone with a great camera since she doesn't own a digital camera just yet. Thanks in advance.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

If you lose em', you'll have no choice but to but Stereo Bluetooth Headphones.

Overall good phone, but I now have the HP IPAQ series. I'd still recommend this, or any other HTC phone, to anyone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

n_hopper submitted this review of the HTC TyTN / 8525 / JasJam (Hermes):

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

After dealing with a myriad of disappointments from my Palm TX, culminating with touchscreen problems, I made the jump over to a Windows Mobile device. I'm glad I did. To talk about the phone, I first need to make some comparisions between what I found vs. what I expected.

The 8525, the first Windows-based phone/PDA I've used, has been a big change. The 8525 has a LOT more functionality. Installing programs is very easy. There's a TON of great applications. The screen is very responsive and stability is vastly improved over my experiences with the Palm.

Calendar and contact additions is not quite as easy on the palm. In fact, it's a lot more complicated. This has been a big disappointment.

But in terms of what I actually DO with the phone, I've been very pleased. Call quality is fantastic. Battery life has been okay. I am a very heavy data user, and the phone lasts about 3-5 hours using 3G data, listening to streaming music, and making some calls, and playing games. That's about what I got with my Palm TX.

I'd not call this a phone. I'd call it a PDA that can make phone calls. This is important to note. Phone use is not particularly straightforward out of the box. There's a bit of a learning curve getting used to how to make calls, manipulate phone contacts, and the like.

As far as data features go, you can't go wrong with this phone. With the unlimited data plan for $40 per month (at current rates), you get near WiFi speeds with 1000x the coverage.

Add Opera Mini to supplement the IE Mobile and you can actually use the internet with almost the same functionality as a desktop.

Application support is great. The firmware is easily updated. MMS and SMS is fantastically easy with the slide-out keyboard.

The biggest drawback is the use of those little miniSD cards, which aren't quite as popular as SD.

AT&T offers refurbished models for a fraction of full retail. I picked up my 8525 for $100.

If data is your thing, this is the phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

If I could I will be married to these machine, calling it a phone is underrating it, it is a package of productivity from the obvious to the extreme, I mean really you don't even need the stylus, you receive a text with a phone number and it is hyperlinked by default, push email, push to talk, infrared, enhanced bluetooth, really you can not only use the internet acess that you have on your phone to pass it to your laptop or desktop but you can set it up as a TV remote and more, it is incredible...

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

A Favor:
- Pantalla Gigante
- Excelente Calidad en Recepcion de Sonido
- Windows Mobile 5.0
- 2MegaPixeles en la camara con Grabacion de Video
- Procesador de 400Mhz
- Facil Configuracion de Cliente de Correos
- Wi-Fi
- PTT habilitado
- Version de Internet Completa en HTML
- Memoria Expandible con Micro SD
- UMTS Tecn 3G
- Hermoso Teclado QWERTY

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

TheCellGUYohMy submitted this review of the HTC TyTN / 8525 / JasJam (Hermes):

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I used the 8125 for a long time. When the 8525 came out I was overjoyed and intrigued. So after a short time I was forced by my relentless curiosity and quest for 3G. I was very happy with my 8125 and nothing short of elated with my new purchase.

Pro's
- Touchscreen
- Excellent reception and sound quality
- Windows Mobile 5
- 2MP camera with video record
- 400mhz processor
- Easy e-mail setup
- Wifi
- PTT availability
- Full html internet
- Expandable memory with Micro SD
- UMTS data (in compatible area)
- Nice large qwerty keyboard
- And of course the standard Pda stuff. Task list, calender, converter, calculator, and such.

Con's
- Dialing pad can be tricky to use while driving
- All your friends will want to see it and use it
- Since the debut of the Iphone I've been getting asked if it's an Iphone (an insult to the wonderful piece of equipment that the 8525 is)

Give me an 8525 over a Gen 1 Iphone any day.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

polarpooch submitted this review of the HTC TyTN / 8525 / JasJam (Hermes):

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

Got it a week ago, and I still can't stop playing. I switched from VZW to ATT (ATT service coverage is MUCH better in my city)...also, ATT didn't disable the WiFi like VZW did for my Treo.

Pros:
Large screen is beautiful
Processor is fast
Voice and call quality excellent
Camera is amazingly good! Lots of features
Zero problems w/Active Sync (unlike my Treo)
Easy to use email, messaging
Scroll dial (no wonder folks love this on blackberry!)
Side sliding keyboard-big keys, fewer mistakes
Instant landscape when keyboard is slid out
Hasn't locked up yet! (crossing fingers)
EDGE is fast enough (compared to VZW data)here
Who knew WiFi was such a great thing on a phone...never could use it on VZW!
Stereo bluetooth
Strong internal antenna
Mp3 and video are both excellent on this device
Comm Manager--very nice

Cons:
Pricey, but so was ATT's Treo upgrade
Already have a damaged pixel..not a big deal, but sort of drives me nuts...
No insurance available (ATT issue)-what's this about?!
No one-handed dialing in the car due to touch screen keys
Headset port does not work w/my fm transmitter-not a huge deal, but annoying
Bulky
Battery life is only OK
No intuitive voice dialing or voice commands

Basically, anything that wasn't as hinky as my Treo 700w was going to be an improvement for me. I had set my expectations low already, and was so relieved this device and ATT lived up to its promises. Oh yeah, my city has so much WiFi coverage, I've barely had to use EDGE. But it's still nice to have it.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

stodaro submitted this review of the HTC TyTN / 8525 / JasJam (Hermes):

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

The 8525 has everything. As long as it is upgradeable to Windows Mobile 6 (which they say it is) then there is no better smart phone on the market. It was hard for me to move from my Verizon xv6600 even though the phone really didn't work well but the 8525 had so much promise. I am going to write a lot of cons for this product but not take it as a knock, just thoughts for future improvements.

Pros
- Fits in your hand like a glove and a majority of the buttons are perfectly placed
- Jogger is great for former Blackberry users
- Wifi and 3G provide very fast downloads
- The Blue Tooth actually works
- The screen is sharp
- Camera is very good and so is the video
- PPT is a nice value add feature
- The connection manager button on the side allows you to connect via different options quickly and easily
- Set up was easy (but I know the operating system well - others might want to read the manual)
- Windows Mobile 5 is a huge upgrade of Windows 2003 second edition
- Email set-up was easy and use is even easier
- Fast processor
- Keyboard is perfect for people with big fingers and has a good feel
- The speaker phone is excellent, clear and loud
- Good sound quality for music files
- The phone is pretty good at holding onto a tower but coverage near my house is spotty

Cons
- Battery life. I have heard others say they got 2 days of life out of the battery but I am yet to crack more than 16 hours of above average use.
- They put the on/off button directly across from the jogger. When you click the jogger you shut off the phone from time to time
- The slider feels flimsy. I always feel like I am going to break it
- Can't type with one hand
- Doesn't come with a cradle to charge an extra battery (which you need if you are traveling)

Overall it is a fantastic phone, the best I have seen so far. I am extremely happy with my purchase and recommend the phone to anyone who is a road warrior who wants all the bells and whistles.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I live in Baltimore, MD where ATT's 3G coverage is very good. I use Verizon for voice service, but EVDO cant compete with ATT's 3G speeds

Pro:
- 3G speeds and coverage are amazing
- Sliding keyboard with tactile key placement
- Features and on-board applications
- Solid build quality
- Great sound
- Very expandable
- Decent laptop replacement for minor tasks

Con:
- Windows OS lacks creativity and originality

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

So i did a little research and downloaded software to make it a little easier to use.

Spb pocketplus taskmanager (must have)
Operamini
Shozu (pictures)
XM Radio (at&t)
Instant Messaging (at&t)

I believe at&t just came out with the updates for the re-branding for this device. But before you do that dl shozu to back up your contacts.

All in All the only problems that i have had with this device is that it freezes about once a month but a soft reset handles that. I have a 2gb memory card and a jawbone bluetooth headset. So i have no complaints. I'm now waiting on the UMTS Iphone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I use to be a tech with Verizon and had the mot 815.. so I wanted some of the feature that phone had like a big keypad and big screen ect. This phone met all those requirements and more. I have had the phone a month and still havent found everything. If i was a customer I would prob still buy this phone even though the price is high and the internet package would hurt the wallet some.

PROS
*Big screen and buttons
*great signal
*cool slide screen ability
*wifi
*great camera 2.0mp and camera features
*windows-easy to use
*email sent right to my phone
*bluetooth
*best phone i ever had

Cons
*expensive 449 with 2 year contract
*freezes up once a week
*not a phone u can do stuff while driving

other than that I believe the phone is awesome... the freezing gets on my nerves but i know that most pdas freeze up so often.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I wanted it to work but the problems were abound. I considered trying a new one but thought if it happened to one it could happen to the next one - after the 30 day return policy.

Pros: Excellent features - wifi,bt,3G, full keyboard, great screen and it had a nice feel in your hand, easy sync.

Cons: wifi had the range of bluetooth.
The phone had to be rebooted to get a signal several times. When I had no phone signal my smt5600 had 4 bars. When I had full signal strenght, the people on the other end said my voiced sounded scratchy. I tried loading the latest ROM - no change. When using the wifi (limited range) I kept getting popups indicating my WEP key was invalid and had to reenter it. The wifi signal strength was erratic. I didn't even get the change to delve into the higher level functions as I spent all my time trying to get the basics to work.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

pepsijunky submitted this review of the HTC TyTN / 8525 / JasJam (Hermes):

Overall rating: 3.5 (out of 5)

I have come to the conclusion that this phone can only be described as "high maintenance." I started with cingular a month ago and on the last day of my 30 day trial I switched to a Pearl.

PROS
-Wifi is pretty awesome, it runs really well in my house making the need for the PDA connect plan questionable will get to that later).

-The versatility and wide range of programs, themes, and everything else is also very nice.

-Reception is very good.

CONS
-I installed the updated ROM and it stopped me from connecting to my isp. That is annoying.

-Phone is slow, especially when a few programs get opened the darn thing slows way down.

-In 30 days I had it freeze up on me 4 times, I had to hard reset 3 times and my SIM card somehow disconnected causing me hours of hassle last week.

-Big phone, also the buttons and placement of buttons never really got comfortable.

-connection to computer for activesync is far from flawless. That may or may not be my computer but apparently the two devices don't get a long.

Overall I enjoyed the phone but the expense for data ($39.99) is overrated especially since we only have EDGE in my area for a while longer. The phone is high maintenance, simple as that, when I want to do simple things it is very difficult. I hope the crackberry pearl treats me well or else I might have to get the iphone!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I've tried three different phones other than mine and 2 different 8525. If anybody could help me with this, let me know.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

It's has it all for a PDA phone.

Pros -
1. It grabs a tower and hangs on for dear life
2. Good camera for a phone and the flash is nice
3. The keyboard is better than most for big hands and has a nice wide screen to work with.
4. It can be used to access the Internet from your Laptop (although it requires setting up not for a non tech) It works extremely well on the Cingular network. Just as fast as DSL and allows me to VPN to work on the road. Refer to the included CD for the procedures under OEM folder User manual chapter 6-6.
5. Looks great big screen and good sound
6. Email is easy to use
7. Wi-fi you can't go wrong but not going to use it much with a unlimited data plan
8. It works fast and is an all inclusive phone.
9. 3G

Cons -
1. Not a one handed phone but we shouldn't dial and drive at the same time. I am bad about that so this will help.
2. It needs a bigger battery (Easily fixed by buying an after market)
3. All opened programs will stay running (Settings/System/Memory/Running Programs to stop all)
4. Does not automatically disconnect from the GPRS network.
5. Not very intuitive you need to be technologically advanced to really get the benefit of this phone.
6. You will have to protect it screen is exposed.

Overall for me this is the perfect phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
