It was one of the first that doubled as a music player (but note, this plays wma files, NOT mp3's). Now that we are in 2007 it is a pain to have to use wma files. <br /><br />This phone has a built in GPS navigator that gives you awesome driving directions. 10 out of 10. You have to $$ shell out some monthly $8.95's plus usage minutes to use it.<br /><br />Like almost all other 2007 cell phones, the interface is sluggish. I am praying the iPhone is setting the new standard with 10ms response times instead of the 60 or 70ms response times on phones like this one. If you are reading this review in 2008, don't pay money for this phone (get it with a plan if anything).<br /><br />Pro's:<br />- Awesome GPS navigation if you don't mind shellin out $$$ per month.<br />- MicroSD is good. You can get a microSD to SD converter on amazon for $20.<br />- It has BlueTooth and I use my BT earpiece sometimes. Honestly though, BT is over-rated. You can't even transfer files with it. <br />- Camera is slightly above average by Sep. 2007 cell phone standard.<br /><br />Con's: <br />- In September 2007 this should be a $100 phone.<br />- Doesn't play mp3's. The music player was revolutionary but now is just annoying (can't shut the phone [omg]) etc.<br />- Internet browser is out of date. Can't load the mobile wikipedia page.<br />- my txt inbox is always fillin up. I think it is 50 inbox 50 sentbox limit. <br />- The VGA out is dumb. I'd like to meet someone that has done something useful with it.<br />- After using the GPS navigator or playing music the phone will not be in speakerphone mode, but will still playing everything through the speakerphone. To fix this you have to change the mode to speakerphone then change it back regular mode.<br />- The internet browser crashes on a lot of web pages. The crashes often don't let you power down. I have had to physically remove the battery probably 25 times in my 15 months of usage. Except when its dark. Takes decent movie and IU is okay..its not fast not slow either. I don't text much so its good enough for me. I had this phone about 10 month and I notice A990 was dropping a many many calls. I figure verizon service is getting bad so I blamed on verizon system, but I found out many of my friends having similar problems. I took my other verizon phone(Chocolate) same places where A990 was having tough time getting signals. Behold...chocolate works great where my A990 was searching for the signals. Call 611 with chocolate and explain the verizon tech and he agrees that my A990 is having a signal problem and I should take it to service center and have it checked up. To make the long story short They replace my phone twice and still I having a same problem. Now here is the kicker, in order for verizon to give me a different model phone I need to do this replacement thing 3 times in order for me to get a other line a phone. Now A990 is the most expensive phone that verizon carries and only replacement in their list for it is Moto Krzr? After 3 times of return they can only give me a cheaper phone which I do not like. Also here is another kicker, now if they decide to give me different model phone, I need to renew my contract for 2 years as from the day I received my new phone. hmmm...Most reliable wireless company? I don't think so. I really like A990, except for the signal. Oh yeah, did I mention when A990 searches for signal all the time my battery drains very quickly. I could only use the phone for 3/4 of days with min of talking time. which I only use 1000min a month. I have to charge it around 3 pm to get thru the day. It froze up every 5 minutes and had to be reset (upon returning, which by the way was after the 30 days or whatever because it was such crap) they told me the Q was a disatster. Too much cramped into a thing phone and they hadn't quite ironed out the wrinkles. They then talked me into the Palm Treo (raved about it to me) upon taking a vacation I had to go to an out of town Verizon store because the Treo's service was junk. I would get my voicemail/data messages 4-5 days after they were sent to me. They told me at this location that the Treo was nothing but problems. Who to believe?? They gave me this phone as another "equal trade" claiming it was great and had a really sweet camera. So here is my lovely review!<br /><br />Pros<br />--GREAT camera! Really awesome pictures, sweet swivel and looks like a real camera when taking a pic.<br />--Nice sized screen<br />--Texting is a breeze <br />--Clock stays lit on outside continuously, which is awesome.<br />--Pretty sleek look<br /><br />Cons<br />--Battery life has turned to CRAP. I charge it to a full charge..after 5 hours this thing is battery low. Then, it chimes this little noise every 5 minutes to let you know it's dying which just kills the battery faster. I might talk on it for 5 minute convos maybe 4-5 times a day and this thing is junk. I've tried a new battery, it just drains it!<br />--Can't set tones to text messages individually (my LG you could)<br />--Daylight Savings Time doesn't adjust Calendar or alarms (found out the hard way on that)<br />--Reception isn't very good<br />--OK key is way small in the middle of the four way key<br /><br />This is just your everyday average (probably would be a free phone with service if it wasn't for the camera) phone. It's nice, but not worth the money if you have to pay it. Nevertheless I bought it.<br /><br />I am thoroughly pleased. The pics are good. The signal strength is good, the battery life could be better which is why I'm buying the extended battery. So far no complaints!!! I think this is the best quality phone verizon is offering now. I use cell phones often and have always appreciated having the latest and greatest and I frequently check Phonescoop to keep up. I usually get a new phone every couple of months or so and have tried PDA,s, flips, spinners, sliders, slims ...well I've tried them all. I am sorry if this at all sounds pretentious, but I am just trying to give you an idea of where I am coming from. I don't think I've ever had the inclination to rate a phone and this time I decided to take my time to post about the 990. It is AWSOME and I mean really great. In fact, this phone is so much better than any other I've owned, I think its going to be a long time before I get a new one. I don't think I've ever said that about a cell phone before. I can't see anything in the near future that comes close to eclipsing it. I waited a while before I posted to make sure that I was still happy with it and I appreciate it even more now.<br /><br />My favorite things about this phone:<br /><br />1. Quality feel of the Moto V60. It has a metal case!<br />2. Screen as sharp as a Pioneer Elite Plasma Screen Television.<br />3. For once a camera that takes usable pictures.<br />4. Great Speakers for Speakerphone, ringers, and playing music.<br />5. Outstanding reception, even in the back of a big-box-store.<br />6. Optional Navigation system will BLOW YOU AWAY!!!<br />7. Large keys again…Thank you!!!! <br />8. Great weight and size<br />9. Battery charges quickly and lasts and lasts, even for the powerful applications.<br /><br />10. Every other Pro listed by others. I could go on and on….<br /><br />So far the only gripe is that the shudder action on the camera is a little belated. After you push the button, it takes about 1 ˝ seconds before the shudder snaps.<br /><br />I have been waiting and willing to pay for a high end phone for Verizon. I was getting sick of the cheap plastic crap that is offered now. Finally something different. I went from the A900 to this and the thickness is a little shocking but for all the features it's a cheap price to pay. I bought this phone and after 15 days I realized the calender does not work! Let me elaborate, you can set your aunt's birthday for Feb. 4 and it will place a highlight for Nov. 16! U can set a reminder and it will place it on any random day of the year. This is a terrible phone for someone who has a bad memory and wants to be reminded of something. Since it was after 15 days I had no option but order a new phone every other day and get another phone with the same problem! I received 8 sch a990's in a one month period! All with the same problem. This would still be going on if I would have not used my creative thinking methods to solve this problem. Verizon is great and samsung is great but this phone's calender sucks! P.S. Some of the phones include LG vx8000, razr v3c, razr v3m, moto e815, lg chocolate. I am truley a technology nut.<br /><br />Anyway, when i first saw that this phone was coming to verizon i was excited. I ordered it from the verizon site on its on-line launch day (june`06 ish) and have been using the phone ever since.<br /><br />Pros:<br />-Size is not too small, yet not too big.<br />-Camera is wonderful, takes crisp and clear pictures.<br />-Takes quick pictures with AutoFocus turned OFF (to do this rotate the screen to turn on the camera, press the button to the left of the "W" zoom button, use the "T" zoom button to scroll to AFS, press the shutter button, scroll to OFF, then press the shutter button again, then press the button to the LEFT of the "W" zoom again).<br />-Comes with TV out cable...great for showing off pictures and videos taken by the phone<br />-Solid RF performance....on par DB wise with my E815 which is activated on my 2nd line.<br />-Text to speech is great...although you must update to the latest firmware at a verizon store to be able to use it for texting. The original firmware only allows text to speech for picture messages.<br />-All charger/headphone ports have a cover<br />-camera lense has a cover<br />-camera flash can be used as a flash without even opening the phone.<br />-Time is ALWAYS displayed on the outer LCD<br />-Internal screen is absolutely beautiful.<br /><br />CONS:<br />-everyone i know wants to use/play with it.<br />-cant play mp3's...must convert to WMA.<br />-calendar glitches on all known firmware versions.<br />-VZW UI<br /><br />Conclusion- Paired with a 1GB microSD card and my bluetooth headset, this phone is everything i need. I dont even bother carrying a camera with me everywhere now that this phone takes such good pictures (although i do recommend using a normal digital camera for trips/vacations etc).Simply one of the best phones i've ever had. I purchased an extended battery and it's the same if not worst than the regular one.<br />I give it a 4.<br /> <br />In conclusion the phone is quite good even though it is quite expensive.<br />I give it an overall 8 from a scale of 1 to 10.<br /><br />If we see it from the perspective of someone buying a digital camera and also buying a cellular phone, then I would say it is a worthwhile purchase. Now keep in mind that the vx8100 is the best phone I have ever owned, so I will be comparing it to that often.<br /><br />Pro's:<br />Display - AMAZING, 256k colors, incredibly big, 240x320 pixels<br />External Display - bright enough, I like how the digital clock always stays on, but doesnt light up too much to save battery.<br />Battery - I am texting and talking constantly, not to mention using the camera and mp3 and I have had no problems charging nightly.<br />Camera - 3.2 MP, a little slow shutter speed, AWESOME for a cell phone!<br />Swivel Screen - Awesome for the camera.<br />VERY STURDY - The whole phone feels quality, including all swivels, hinges and doors.<br />Ports - All charging ports and openings have covers on them.<br />Signal - No problems here, everywhere I have gone I have gotten solid service, no dropped calls yet.<br />Clarity - Very strong, no crackling or echoeing.<br />Sound - music and custom ringers sound good out the two speakers.<br />Keypad - I like this flat, easy to push button style, its especially nice for texting.<br /><br />Cons:<br />Price - very expensive, but people its worth it.<br />OK Button - this is a little bit small, but you get used to it<br />Shape - Some people may not like the shape and size of this phone because it is bigger and thicker than the RAZR, KRZR and the vx8600, but its about the same size as the vx8100/8300 and has WAY more features.<br /><br />This phone is FEATURE PACKED. If you are looking for a phone to fit your technological needs this is it. The calendar software and ability for PC synch to Outlook makes this phone the ultimate all in one device. The phone rang (Floyd's Run Like Hell) and I pressed the side button with out touching the phone and began talking via speakerphone. After I parked in NYC I plugged in the headphones and listened to music on the six block walk. Didn't take any pictures but the option was there. Try doing that with your Ipod! <br /><br />And when your holding this phone you can feel the difference. I have had the Moto Q, E815, Razr, and 9800. I just wish verizon didnt limit the phone so much. HINT!!!
