We don't need a data plan, not even texting, just the phone, and while we've considered updating to newer phones we just can't seem to justify it.<br />Both of our A640s still work as if they were brand new.<br /><br />The only drawback is the inability to upload photos to our computers, which means we'll lose the pics when we finally do replace our phones.<br /><br />Otherwise, even though it's discontinued and long gone, the A640 is really impressively good.<br />_______<br /><br />Update 5.6.13<br />About a year ago we finally updated our plan (Sprint family) to a data plan (Sprint everything) and got iPhones (4s), which we love.<br />The only reason we upgraded to a data plan and replaced our phones was for my work. Our Samsung A640s were still going strong, got good reception (Sprint, in Phoenix, AZ) and quite frankly worked great. (I wanted one earlier, but have been trying to stand this phone.)<br /><br />Pros:<br />*Pretty (nice blue on black outer display)<br />*Works normally<br />*Functional camera<br />*Nice Features (blue tooth, camera, calender, alarm, ready link, voice memo...)<br /><br />Cons:<br />*Battery life sucks<br />*Mysteriously turns off without warning (sometimes this is brought on by letting clamshell snap shut; I have to be oh so delicate with closing phone)<br />*Calculator only goes to hundredth's place on decimals (I think this may be common with Samsungs; I don't like it b/c math done on calculator is inaccurate, and I can't calculate mileage reimbursement)<br />*Ringer is not as loud as I would like it to be; I miss phone calls<br />*Clamshell falls open when phone is on belt clip or not completely vertical (I have an elastic hair band around it to keep it from opening)<br /><br />I can't wait to have a Sanyo again. They are much better phones all around: very durable, loud, strong hinge, good calculator, etc. If none of my cons matter to you, then OK phone. But if you would be bothered by the cons, avoid this phone! When i got the a640 it was great. Then i moved now i get a lot of dropped calls in my new home. I have to move around in my home sometimes to get a good signal. The camera is not the best. The calls i get have a great clear sound. The speakerphone is not great but is ok. I love to be able to see who calls before opening the a640. The outside display is great. I like the sleek design. The battery only holds a charge for 2-3 days. If i use the a640 for 30 minutes to 1 1/2 hrs i need to charge it again. I had a nokia b4 the a640 i could use it for a week b4 needing to charge it. I have not used the BT or the RL. The phone book is one of the best. Never had a problem w/vm alerts me when i receive them. TM could be better. Don't use it much. Inside display is great can't change colors on it. Don't use it for the internet. Some of the ringers could be louder. Everything else about it is perfect, but it's worth coming on here and talking about what's really going on. My keys are frozen for some reason and I didn't do anything to it. I close the phone and the inside screen light stays on, and is slowly draining the battery. Also the screen isn't frozen because the digital clock on the screen is constantly keeping up with time. There is nothing on the outside screen at all, and when I try to turn the phone off it reacts to nothing. When someone tries to call or text my phone, it has no reaction. I had it on the charger all night to avoid having it dead in the morning, but the charger being in did absolutely nothing, and it's close to being dead now. I emailed the company and the network, because I'm about to go to school and they don't even open until 9am. After a month I was ready to turn it back in unfortunately I was 2 days past the return date. It looks great the the camera has poor quality, not that i use it much. The worst features are the poor signal strength, very poor vibrate feature, and very low ring tones. The bluetooth reception is choppy at best. On the plus side it is durable; I've dropped it in a fence post hole full of water and was not able to retrieve it for several minutes and it worked fine after drying it out. My old "free with signup" Nokia I had when I was 18 was more reliable and rugged than this little guy!<br /><br />Pros:<br />- It looks good(kinda 80's Knight Rider-esqe)<br />-The menu is easily navigable<br />- Main screen is bright and easy on the eyes<br /><br />Cons:<br />-Worst reception I have ever had.. Nothing like dropping an important call while sitting in your livingroom!<br />-Camera is slow and fickle about being steady... I NEED PERFECT STILLNESS PEOPLE!<br />-Ringer volume is nowhere near loud enough (thank god for Labradors who alert when your phone rings)<br />-Phone forgets to ring when someone calls you and then holds voice mails for ransom 'till the next day (very helpful)<br />-Phone randomly turns itself off in your pocket with out telling you first.(what do you mean you can't get ahold of me hunny?)<br />-Weakest vibrate mode ever...my sister in-law's little rat dog shakes more violently... In August.<br />-frighteningly wobbly hinge.<br /><br />All in all, I gave this phone a 2/5 because it does dial out and connect calls occasionally. It fits in my pocket. and David Hasselhoff would definitely have had this in his pocket if it were available during the Knight Rider era. <br /><br />I'm going back to Sanyo... I was also unaware that all that neat stuff my friends would tell me they could do with their bluetooth was completely impossible on my phone.<br /><br />So by the time I realized all the stuff that I could not do, I was already past the 30 day return period. <br /><br />As far as the good things about this phone: It has speakerphone. It may not be the best quality, but I am used to Nextel phones, so mebbe I'm just spoiled. And even if I can't do alot of neat things with it, the bluetooth is kinda cool. It also supports all the data features I so love to access. With a full signal. <br />-Screen completely freezes like a locked-up computer. With bluetooth, a camera, internal antenna and a hidden (as I call stealth) display, it was a no brainer as to which free phone I should get.<br /><br />My only gripe about this phone is the speaker phone volume as previously mentioned many times. I'll simply list the Pros &amp; Cons below:<br /><br />Pros:<br />-Small form factor<br />-Bluetooth<br />-Vision Capable<br />-Acceptable camera quality<br />-AMPS 850 / CDMA 850 / CDMA 1900 (Analog Roaming!!)<br />-Flight Mode (unheard of in a low-cost, small form factor such as this)<br />-WAP Browsing<br />-Voice Memo<br />-Voice Dialing<br />-Push To Talk<br />-Nice Address Book<br />-Ability to use the camera with the flip in the closed position<br />-Ready-Link (I think is a waste of money but, hey, if you like it...)<br />-OLED external display (better than LCD for sunlit conditions)<br />-Internal Antenna<br />-Manufactured by Samsung<br />-Decent Battery Life<br /><br />Cons:<br />-POOR signal quality - I travel extensively and the phone has sub-par signal quality overall - the Signal display constantly goes from to Full strength<br />-Voice quality (my end) is very "tinny" sounding and goes from complete silence to a lot of background noise all the time (I am constantly saying, "Are you still there?")<br />-Callers can tell I am using a phone and say the sound quality is "so-so".<br />-Sound quality (both ends) is much better via a bluetooth headset (I use a Plantronics Discovery 645).<br />-Awkward SMS/TXT composition firmware - certain punctuation requires going through a menu set rather than hitting the "1" key multiple times ("?", "!", etc) - T9 predictive text does not operate like other Samsungs or industry standards<br />-MANY dropped calls compared to other Sprint PCS phones<br />-Awkward missed calls / txt notification system<br />-Can not get bluetooth file transfer to work<br /><br />Overall: NOT a good phone for real-world usage</p> <p><i>(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)</i></p> http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/p_forum.php?ff=942 http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/user_reviews.php?phone=942&r=19274#review19274 http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/user_reviews.php?phone=942&r=19274#review19274 Wed, 11 Oct 2006 15:26:30 GMT <p><i>protelbrown submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A640:</i></p><p>Overall rating: <b>4</b> (out of 5)</p><p>Well all in all i am quite happy with this phone. I like the default menu.
