The ring tone selections could have had better navigation -- but it works, so why complain.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

aegrotatio submitted this review of the Motorola V195 / V197:

Overall rating: 2 (out of 5)

This is my first Motorola after a long line of prepaid LG, Samsung, Pantec, Nokia, and Sony Ericsson phones on both T-Mobile and AT&T/Cingular. It is a huge disappointment how primitive and outdated Motorola equipment has become compared to virtually everything else.

PROs:
-It has a good radio which is important for 1900 MHz-only T-Mobile.
-Keys are easy to use.
-It looks good (see Cons).
-Relatively long battery life compared to the rest.
-Lots of loud and good ringers.
-Handy external mini-screen shows everything you need including VM, SMS, IM, battery, signal status icons.
-Bluetooth on a prepaid phone is almost unheard of.
-People on the other end think I'm calling from a land line, it's sounds so good.

CONs:
-Nice-looking, rubberized shell scrapes off in everyday use. This really pissed me off.
-Extremely heavy for its size.
-Rather bulky and awkward to hold.
-Speakerphone is nearly useless.
-When closed the buttons activate ringer profile so when jostling around in a bag it can and will often turn its ringers off.
-The charger is on a timer which you can extend, but why not work like every other phone in existence and automatically charge itself to 100%? The default of 1 hour will not fully recharge the battery.
-Hideously ugly user interface with Atari 800 fonts.
-Rubber grommet that covers charger and headphone jack also covers jagged edges that will scratch you.
-Even though the charger is mini-USB style it does not work with an alarming number of USB chargers.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

MoonPie98 submitted this review of the Motorola V195 / V197:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

Just started using this phone in January, on T-mobile in Indianapolis.

Pros: Excellent battery life-- I've forgotten my charger and not been able to charge for two days and the battery is still good. Signal is superb-- better than my Samsung on Verizon. Bottom floor, indoors inside an office it gets nothing, but after I go upstairs, I get a signal.

Cons: Not really any. Small complaint--can't change the font on the wallpaper.

Overall, an excellent phone. Just wish it were a Verizon phone because I can't get T-mobile when I go out of town.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

bklubeck submitted this review of the Motorola V195 / V197:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I got this phone as a free upgrade w/ T-Mobile 2 years ago (they immediately discontinued it for the revised V195S, MyFaves-capable. Arrgh! Still a great phone).

It has been the best phone I've ever owned. It's been used, abused, dropped, etc. over the two years I've had it, and except for a few scratches on the case, shows little wear & tear. The clamshell cover is still tight & springy.

PROS: very durable phone; bluetooth was nice to have at the time (still is); good battery life; better than average reception; great features - calculator, calendar, alarm clock, phone book, call log; Hi-Fi Ringers/Megatones; easy to use/navigate.

CONS: a basic phone, doesn't have a lot of bells & whistles as far as camera/video, music player, etc; speakerphone function doesn't work great; recently some calls received scratchy, w/ static - might be age of phone; Central Navigation ring-key acts up, locks one direction or another at times (just started - again, probably due to age)

The Pros definitely outweigh the Cons, most of which I think are age or wear-related. The best phone by far for a first-time C-phone user!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Thelastholdout submitted this review of the Motorola V195 / V197:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

First, I must offer my credentials. I am an outsourced warranty agent with Verizon Wireless, so I have a good idea what's good and what's not, and what constitutes an actual problem with a phone.

Now, let me get down to business:

If you want a camera/good browser/all that extra crap that doesn't have anything to do with the actual function of a phone, then there are better (albeit less reliable) options.

If you want a phone that has about a 98% chance of working properly for a long time, then BUY THIS PHONE.

I bought my V195 a year and a half ago after I tried to move out of my parents' house the first time. They have Verizon, I have T-Mobile now, and even though T-Mobile technically has no presence where I live, the phone still works beautifully on AT&T's network. Over a year and a half, and the only quality issue with the phone is the chintzy quality of the speakerphone or using a wired headset (never screwed around with a Bluetooth). However, I never expected crystal clarity on either anyway. Not to mention I don't use it that often, so it works.

Everything that I've actually tried to use on this phone works perfectly. From the display, to MyFaves, to adding contacts, to sending/receiving text messages, to using the WAP browser (actually a viable option for checking the Superbowl score and quick crap like that). Sure, yeah, there's the static issue, but it's never been bad enough to complain about. Sure, the display is a LITTLE laggy at times, but again, I've used this phone a year and a half. Once in a while a call will drop while I'm talking on it, but I think that's the network and the fact that I live in a concrete building and on the second out of three floors I can still get good reception even while not under my skylight is awesome.

If you're looking for a phone with some moderately advanced options, then buy this phone. Nuff said.

P.S. The battery life rocks, a year and a half later.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Mikey01 submitted this review of the Motorola V195 / V197:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

The Motorola v195 is nearly perfect, if not perfect, as a basic cell phone. In it's offering as a base line phone, or lower end phone, it has few equals.
It's basic phone functions have few peers against ANY cell phone. No, the phone does not have a Bose music system or 16 gig of memory, nor will it surf well or have a spreed sheet ect. But I just wanted a pure and simple phone. I had the Samsung sgh T219 and I would have been hard pressed to call it mediocure. I then tried the Nokia 2760 and the Nokia 3200 and they fell into the same catagory as the Samsung. Only one bar of strength at work (outside) poor battery life and a few other mediocure problems.
My wife's starter (bottom line- pay as you go)Nokia 6030 candy bar phone was an exception to this. It is everything the Motorola v195 is. I just needed a clamshell design. Both my wifes Nokia 6030 and this Motorola v195 offer phonominal 1100 milliamp batteries with long run times. Both phones offer clean clear recieve and transmitted calls with plenty of volume. I enjoy mostly full bars everywhere and glad to have the two phones. Both phones are very durable and stylish. Neither phone have much in the way of non phone googaws and gimics that suck up your money and distract you from the merits of a good basic phone.
I do not understand why Motorola and Nokia can't offer this same standard of basic phone excellence in every model they produce. Many of there higher end phones do not compair to the v195 and the 6030, yet to be so much more expensive. Do not put down the two phones because of what they don't have. That would be unfair as they were not designed for that market. Bottom line is that the Motorola v195 and the Nokia 6030 are both very excellent.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

knuckleballer34 submitted this review of the Motorola V195 / V197:

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

After getting fed up with a newer phone of mine, a friend recommended me getting this phone. I picked one up online for $30 and was more than pleased about the price. After fighting with my Samsung, I was happy to be getting a phone that I knew would have good solid reception.

Pros:
Great reception
Good call quality
Loud ringtone volume
Sturdy and durable
Large keys
Bright, easy to read screen

Cons:
Only one- an SAR rating of 1.6

The one con on this phone is exactly the reason why I don't use it anymore. I was never one to particularly care what my phones SAR rating was, and I didn't care about that either when I got this phone. Whatever the real truth about those ratings are, I am absolutely assured that there is something in this phone that is not good for the human body. When I would place the phone on my leg or hold it in my hand, my skin would tingle for about 30 seconds after I took the phone off of myself. Even if I would just pick up the phone and open it to check for a message and put it back down, my hand would tingle, sometimes spreading down my arm. I thought I was losing my mind, but when I tried using my other two phones again and there was no problem like this, I put up my V195 and never used it again. Maybe my phone in particular has some kind of defect...but if that isn't the case, I am absolutely convinced that there could be a price to pay for prolonged use of this phone.

Shorter version: it does weird things to you, stay away!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

It gets great reception (even for T-mobile) and phenomenal battery life. It also has bluetooth and mp3 ring tone capabilities. This means you can transfer songs and pictures to the phone wirelessly through your computer without having to use any special software. The bad thing though is that the phone only has 10 MB memory. Also the Motorola operating system is a bit outdated but is very customizable.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Speakerphone is iffy sometimes - but, it IS a cell phone. Audio voice reception can get?? once in a while but,, it IS a cell phone. SAR rating supposed to be high but so what - the govt. who dumped agent orange on me in the 60's now worrys abt. this --"lemme up, I can't get a breath"
Good phone lots of bang for the buck grab one from TMO TO GO while they'r still there ($39.99) flip your sim card and blather away - this phone reminds me of the old Camrys - get one and say "see you later" (while meaning Next Decade)

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

dbassman submitted this review of the Motorola V195 / V197:

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

I researched Motorola phones for over a month before settling on the V197. I don’t need a camera or all the “Bells & Whistles” and this one seemed to have everything I needed and wanted. One thing that was important to me was Voice Dialing, I’m a quadriplegic and it’s easier for me to speak the name than dial. I figured with 10MB of memory there would be no problem… WRONG! I just got off the phone with a Motorola supervisor who told me this phone only has enough “Voice Dial Memory” for five " seven numbers and offered me a whole 10% off a different phone if I wanted to purchase a new one from them. I purchased two of these phones and was only able to program 5 (five) numbers on both phones!

The phone works GREAT, but if you want Voice Dialing, this is NOT the phone you want!!!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

LYDRN submitted this review of the Motorola V195 / V197:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Bought this phone last week from tmobile's website. Took UPS 3 days to deliver it to my address in Seattle.

Phone sells for 40 dollars with web instant rebate and is sent with a promo (at the time of this posting) refill card worth 25 dollars. That means you're paying 15 bucks for the phone which is a good deal.

Tmobile's shipping out the V195s which is the fixed version of the V195. The issues with the call static have been addressed. I spent almost an hour calling someone by speakerphone, headset and the phone itself and experienced no problems.

Excellent battery life. Excellent basic phone. Too bad it doesnt ship with the software so you could put your fave mp3's in it. Puts out a SAR rating of 1.6 though. The maximum legally allowed in the US. If you believe any of that stuff and the alleged danger it poses then that might be a concern.

Durable construction, rubber grip feel.

One more thing, there's a voice recorder thingy that's pretty useless. You cant listen to yourself.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

TMBISHOP04 submitted this review of the Motorola V195 / V197:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I bought the V195s because I wanted a back up phone and I read the reviews on Phonescoop.com and decided to buy. I must say I was a little skeptical at first but I am very pleased with the phone. It doesn't have a camera but I don't need one, the call clarity is excellent and there's plenty of volume. Battery life is great as well. I also like that the USB and headphone ports are hidden under the phone and protected by the pull down, slide out cover. As stated before this phone does not have all the bells and whistles but if you want a basic phone for calling and texting this phone is a great buy. I paid $54.00 on the T-Mobile web site, had to extend contract but was well worth it.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I bought it because it doesnt have a camera. It very functional in every way. Text messaging is faster then most of the phones Ive owned. The battery life is phenomanal. I have charged it once since I got it. I leave it on 24/7. The reception will depend on what area you are in but I can tell you that the clarity of the calls are great but the speaker part isnt 100% its more like 80%. There is a place to plug in a regular head set instead of bluetooth. Im not 100% fond of the keypad because as you run your fingers across the keys it looks like the keys are going to come off the phone. It was well worth the price I paid or didnt pay because I had a mail in rebate so I didnt have to pay anything in the end.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

tfd47 submitted this review of the Motorola V195 / V197:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

Actually have the euro/canaian version of this [v-191] It has 'kick butt' signal capability and battery life to die for. It appears the only flaw is no auto hyphenation on contact #'s makes then hard to distinguish
(checked a v195 and it is 'same same'). Drives me nuts cause I wear glasses "fit to fry ants with".
pros: good signal, overall voice, spkrphone, size, battery life,

cons: looks like the cheapskates at Moto've done it again - tried to give us a good phone but save that last two cents by skimping on software capabilities. If you can live with that IT Izzz A GREAT PHONE - for simply using as a phone { it is heavy enough that if you threw it and hit someone, it'd knock them for a loop)

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

MrFlashport submitted this review of the Motorola V195 / V197:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

Motorola did this one right. If you're looking for a good basic phone with Bluetooth, look no further. I've had mine since September when I got it for free from T-Mobile as an upgrade and it has proven to be one of the best GSM phones I've even owned. The build quality is excellent, the RF performance is up there with Nokia "classics" like the 6010/3595. Battery life is where this one excels, even with 2 hour a day talking, it only needs a charge every 3 to 5 days before the low battery tone sounds. Bluetooth headset support is excellent, and while it can't do voice dialing, the Bluetooth radio is long range and doesn't seem to put a damper on battery life at all.
If you talk alot, this phone is for you, a fully charged battery will literally last almost 10 hours of talking (yes I've verified this myself).

It has a USB charger and standard wired (2.5mm) headset jack on the bottom, T-Mobile even includes a basic OEM wired headset in the box. I use the Motorola HS700 with the phone and audio quality is superb. Speakerphone could be a little louder, but it works. Ring volume is LOUD on this phone, excellent if you're in high noise enviornments. In almost 4 months I've had no problems with any bugs.

I also own the v190 on my Cingular line and while it lacks Bluetooth, performance, design and features to this phone are similar.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

jsv submitted this review of the Motorola V195 / V197:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I bought two of these phones via T-Mobil on a family plan.
I haven't managed to drain even one bar from the battery meter! I like everything about the phone, except my fiancee's reaction.

The problems I've encountered are:

1. My fiancee gets cranky when we talk on these phones; she says the signal-to-noise ratio is much worse than her last cell phone.

To verify this, we performed an experiment in which we tested the two new v195 phones versus my land-line and her old cell phone. As a control, we tested my v195 to her old cell phone versus my land-line to her new cell phone. We also repeated the experiment after I had her switch ears. The results conclusively proved to her (a research scientist) that the cell phone static *IS WORSE* on the v195. and/or T-Mobil. I plan to repeat the test using someone else's non-v195 T-Mobil cell phone in order to determine whether the network or the phone is to blame.

2. Inexplicably, I am getting an out-of-memory error when trying to store more than 5 voice-dial entries.

3. One-touch speed dial is not working properly for me. Three-touch speed dial works, but what's the point of that?

4. There are a few minor software bugs. Depending on the way in which you navigate to a phone book entry, you may or may not be able to edit it; the prompt says "Edit", but pushing the button does nothing.

5. SIM card doesn't store anything but a name and number. I don't know if that is standard for all SIM cards or not, but it's annoying.

6. Bluetooth transfer from phone to phone transmits only one phone book entry at a time, which is a problem when attempting to back-up one phone to the other.

7. I have transferred 200 numbers from my old phone (BY HAND!), only to find that my future wife finds this phone intolerable due to sound quality. I'm kind of upset that there's no way for a consumer to test a phone without buying and returning it.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
