Zephindiax submitted this review of the Motorola i580:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I was reading through the reviews and found someone who either hates motorola phones, got their crappy phone mixed up with this one, or threw this thing around until they found out how to break it. Here's the review!

"DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE!!!

by TSeaman2

I'm wondering if any of the good reviews were actually made by people or by people who work for Motorola. I have had 8 phones now so far and this is by far the biggest piece of junk I've ever owned. I have had the phone for only 2 months. After just a month of owning the phone, the front screen just went blank. I have not dropped the phone or gotten it wet, yet I have spent the past hour trying to just see my contacts list. The phone has completely snowed out. Occasionally I can see what is on the screen briefly before it seems to enter a snow storm and completely whites out. Every other phone I have owned has been a cheaper, less durable(so they claim) phone, yet they each lasted me at least a year. This one did not last even 2 full months. Please people, I went through the trouble of setting up this account just so I could warn you of what a piece of over-rated junk this phone is. DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE!!!"

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

vipermax346 submitted this review of the Motorola i580:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

This phone has exceeded all my expectations in durability, reliability, and service. It is such a good phone that when it came time for my upgrade, I upgraded to the generation 2 i580 yellow. I work for a radio communications/telecommunications firm and I use my phone constantly. The speaker is clear external and internal. Screen is very easy to read on the outside and main inside screen. In fact its so bright that I use it sometimes as a spotlite in dark locations. As far as durability goes, my first phone I lost in a snow storm in my back yard for a full week. I called it using a friends phone and couldnt locate it since I turned down the ringer. I found it a week later after a thaw and just to be safe put rubbing alcohol on the battery contacts and plugged it in to charge. Lo and behold an hour later it was fully charged and I was back to making calls. The nextel network is very good and works in buildings where other phones won't. I saw some people complaining about the battery life and that I can attest to, but only due to your phone going into an analog signal state when you are almost out of range or you are in the middle of "cell hopping" which drains the battery quickly. The next feature that I have not seen anybody say anything about is the off network radio ability that this phone provides. Basically what it does is allows your phone to act as a radio with a range of what they say about a mile but that is if you are standing in a flat wheat field in kansas. Its more like 1/2 a mile but still if you have other people with the same phone or another direct connect phone with "DirecTalk" capability then you can talk off network without using minutes or direct connect minutes. All in all this is a great phone to use for business or communications.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The first one's screens just stopped working. And for no reason it would turn itself off and back on .
Exchanged it for another one and wow only one screen (exterior) stopped working . Still auto restarts itself and will call the last number called spontaneously and go to speaker phone.

now the GC/DC speaker is working then not working ..

I love the toughness of the phone and the mp3 player is awesome (when speaker works) I can't believe I haven't found anyone with similar problems with this phone..

It is a company phone so I can't argue too much cause i don't pay for it but come on NEXTEL You almost got it right.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

billyb0673 submitted this review of the Motorola i580:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I love this phone. I have been a Nextel customer since 2003, and I tend to be hard on phones. I lose them frequently, and drop them, etc. I have had the i90, i830, i836, i850, and now this i580. I liked the 830 series very well, but I lost my 836, and since I have the insurance on my phones they replaced it for just the $50 deductible. They didn't have the 836 available , so they sent me an i850. The first one they sent me had no signal; it would drop every single call within 1 minute. I sent it back. They sent me another one. This one wouldn't power up; it would but then shut down within about 45 seconds. I sent it back. (Both of these were refurbished phones). I told them DO NOT send me another re-furb. They sent me a third 850. Well this one "worked" and I use that term generously. The signal was terrible. I couldn't get a signal hardly anywhere. When I could, it would drop the calls regularly. After only having it for three months, it started falling apart. The flip mechanism flopped about like a flag in the wind. The antenna base cracked, and the finish was wearing off. It looked like it was 20 years old and had been through a battle. I called Sprint, and Assurion (the insurance company) and told them that if they couldn't do better than this, I was going to cancel my service I had had three of those 850s and in my opinion, they are cheap plastic pieces of garbage.

They sent me this i580. This more than makes up for the problems I had with the 850. It is built like a tank. I have better reception than I have had on any Nextel phone I have ever had. It has more features (camera, blue tooth, memory card, etc). I told the rep that I hadn't paid for a phone this nice and wasn't trying to get a free upgrade, I just wanted a phone that worked. I am not disappointed!! A+. Only thing that could be better is battery life, but I have yet to have a Nextel phone with particularly good battery life.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I had the first problem six months into ownership where the part at the top of the phone that secures it into the holster broke and I had to return it and was without a phone for 10 days. 7 months later (1 month after the warranty expired) the outside screen went out and I was told it was a problem with the generation 1 i580's but Motorola was not doing anything about it. Another common problem is the phone every couple of months would simply turn off dead in the middle of a phone call. I would have to remove the battery to get it to turn back on.

Aside from the above it has been a good phone but not as good as the i530 was.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

And out of all the phones I have owned I must say this phone is the most durable out of all of them. Being I live in St. Pete Beach Florida I am exposed to many of thunderstorms. This phone has survived multiple heavy thunderstorm driven rains, drops of over 12 feet, Very hot and very humid weather as well as surviving a industrial kitchen, in which this phone has survived multiple hits from water, 350 degree grease, banging into corners and equipment as well as taking a unintentional swim into the Gulf of Mexico.

The phone survived everything and then some.

Pros
Durable as all hell
Loud external speaker
Very clear calls
Very good MP3 player
Very loud speaker when playing MP3's
Can play movies and tv shows if video is properly formatted for phone.
very solid feeling
bright display

Cons
crappy battery life
and once in a while the phone slows down to a crawl and needs a reboot.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

mrtim250 submitted this review of the Motorola i580:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

First off let me say, I am EXTREMELY HARD on wireless phones. Having said that, I have found this phone the Motorola i580 to be everything I need in a cell phone. I've had all the fancy so called smart phones, the many types of flip phones. Now then here is what I DON'T LIKE about the i580.

When you are in the main menu; say on the first screen, you're in the settings menu, you get done, you press back, and it takes you out of the main menu and back to the home screen. Irritating, yes, but it does not detract from the overall performance of the phone.
Another item that I find not to my liking, but is an easy fix. It is that of the standard battery, although it it does boast 200 minutes of talk time, sometimes I find that just letting the phone sit and not using it will wear the battery down just as fast as if you used it.

That is the dislikes, both are somewhat irritating but again do not detract from the overall function of the phone. On the other hand here are my likes of the i580.

As I have so plainly stated, I am extremely hard on cell phones, excessively so. I have killed more cell phones by dropping, kicking, submerging, too much this, too much that. I have had the smart phones that are basically pocket sized computers, which they are, I've had both flip phones, stock cell phones, you name and I've probably at least had one in my hands.
Anyway, I do like the mil spec design of this phone. The ruggedness of this phone is truly a wonder. I have dropped this phone, not just from my hand but from about 10-12', it been through the pouring rain, the dust, dirt, and that's just in the 2 weeks I've had the darn thing. Hopefully, this phone will last me until such time that they come up with a replacement for this phone.

To sum it all up, get this phone you wont regret it. If it can stand up to my abuse then it will stand up to yours.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

OntarioGirl submitted this review of the Motorola i580:

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

I've had this phone for over a year on the Telus network. At first I thought it was the greatest thing! Now I HATE it more than anything!
The first one I had was great (I still have no complaints about the PT end of it) until I had to replace it because both screens broke! The only that happened was that it got pulled into a stall (by a horse) while in my jacket pocket onto a rubber matted floor, never got kicked stepped on or anything else...and yet, screens were cracked.
So I BUY a replacement of the exact same phone....
Just over a year later, the listening speaker breaks (phone hasn't been dropped, kicked, in water or anything remotely damaging)! So I can't have a private phone conversation at all with anyone. They have to be on Speaker phone and as of Friday, even that is starting to break up like crazy! The day the phone speakers went on the fritz, I was sitting in a car! Nothing happened at all to it in any way.
All I can say is that I either have the WORST luck in the world or this phone is not nearly what it's hype is put up to be!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

cellular77 submitted this review of the Motorola i580:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I purchased this phone recently because I needed a NEXTEL phone for work. A friend purchased a Renegade and has had it replaced twice with new phones and he isn't even completed his first thirty days yet. For this reason, and because I already own a Sprint Rev A unit, which I use for data, I opted to go with strictly a Iden phone. I will say I have been more than pleasantly surprised at this unit and its performance. The rugged build of this phone surpasses even what I imagined after reading other reviews. Calling it a tank is a understatement. The reception on this phone is amazing, it is even better than my HTC Touch. The data on it is slow and it is the only reason for the half point deduction. Of all phones currently on the market this phone performs better and does more than any other truly rugged and waterproof unit out. Motorola and Sprint should be proud of this unit, it is a shining star in a very large sea of duds for them both.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Still holding up well, for power users extended batt is a must. Wish it was little thinner for pocket carry let's hope Moto has a updated model coming soon.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Jim_9h submitted this review of the Motorola i580:

Overall rating: 0 (out of 5)

I purchased the i580 two weeks ago. A couple of days ago the keyboard suddenly froze up. I took it in for repairs. I have also purchased repair insurance.

After an hour the rep brings the phone back out to me and claims that they can't repair it because it has "moisture damage".

The phone has never has so much as a single drop of water on it. The rep claims that it can get moisture damage from rainy weather or just condensation in the air. In any case the mother board has corrosion on it and that means it has moisture damage, so they won’t do a thing for me.

WHAT??????????????? So it turns out that the "RUGGED" i580 can't even handle moisture in the air.

What a piece of CRAP!

I am out $430 and have no recourse, because I have to buy what they are telling me. BULL CRAP!

I am not done fighting this. TO ALL THOSE CONSIDERING BUYING THIS PHONE, BEWARE AND READ THE FINE PRINT!!!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

PlatMan submitted this review of the Motorola i580:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

Owning and using the i580 now since it's release, I have to say it is not
only Nextel iDEN's best cell phone but the best built cell phone out there,
period!
I have used and tried ALL the major carriers and had their best cell phones
to use and none compare. One of the reasons I am back with Nextel and
the iDEN network is not just for the excellent coverage and service I
receive, but for the i580 cell phone!

The rugged Mil Spec construction protects from the weather environments as
well as hard use and keeps you at ease knowing your phone will work when
you need it to. The most water resistant cell phone there is.

Pros:
Mil Spec Rubber Casing (feels good to hold, too).
Nice and crisp 262K color screen (176 x 220 pixels).
Size isn't too big and not too small.
Great reception.
Excellent volume levels (1-7, 7 being the loudest. The loudest of the
Nextel iDEN phones).
Bluetooth works great and with most Bluetooth Headsets.
MP3 Player.
25 MB of internal memory can hold hundreds of walls.
SD Card slot (holds up to a 1GB Sandisk Transflash Card).
Picture I.D. capable.
Assign Ringtones.
Bluetooth your pictures or walls into the phone's internal memory or on the
SD card.
Email walls or pics to the internal memory or SD card.
Can transfer pics, audio, videos, from SD card to phone and visa versa (as
long as they are not protected files).
Outside I.D. window - super clear and gives off a slight blueish tint when
on. Very easy to read.
Keypad is easy to use, even with larger fingers.
Dual front speakers are crystal clear and loud.
1.3 megapixel camera is above average (but could have been better.
Built in Spotlight can be used with camera or as stand alone.
More great features I haven't listed can be found on Nextel's web site.

Cons:
Standard battery that comes with it won't last a day (get the Maximum
Battery and Max. Batt. Door - this will more than take care of that issue).

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
