dkgunte submitted this review of the Motorola V190:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I have to say I am very happy with this phone. I was looking for a phone, and this was perfect. I don't need to take pictures, do video, etc. I had the Ericsson Z310A, and the V190 is much better. Before I had to charge the Z310 pretty much every day. So far I have only had to charge this phone 6 times in 2 months of use.

Pros: Battery Life
Great reception anywhere
Easy to use/navigate
What a phone should be :-)

Cons: None so far

Would definitely recommend this phone to anyone who is looking for just a phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

starlove23 submitted this review of the Motorola V190:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

This was my first ever cell phone. I used it through Cingular now known as AT&T and it was great. The Cingular service sucked on the other hand, so find another carrier for this phone immediately. How can you not like this phone. I still have it and use it from time to time. Every time I look at it, I think I would not have chosen any other way if I went back two years. It's two years old and still works like it did the day I got it! Definitely purchase!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

When I first started with Cingular, this phone was on the way out. Not only was it compact and adorable, people found it very easy to use. Plus, it was QUADBAND! Most of the free non-camera phones you see these days are dual or tri at best. This was a great simple phone and my customers loved it.

Pros
-Speaker
-Quad Band
-Easy to use
-Small
-Durable

Cons
None that I ever saw!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Everyone seems to have no problems with this phone. I have had so much problems that I am on my second V190 going on my third of problems. My phone will not ring when someone calls. It will make sounds and vibrate out of no where. I was in a movie theatre and it would not stop ringing so i put it on silent and it wouldnt stop so I had to turn it off. It constantly deletes everyone in my phonebook. Overall it is a good phone for someone who rarely uses it. I am not saying do not buy it but you might have a better experience. Thank you.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

These are sold as "basic" phones, but really have a nice set of extra features such as voice dialing and speaker phone. (Voice dialing only works with numbers stored in the phone, not on the sim).
Overall great phone!

PROs
Nice design
Good sound quality
Good battery life
Crisp color display
Good selection of built-in ringtones
Voice dialing
Speakerphone

CONs
Cannot replace faceplate

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

mikemund submitted this review of the Motorola V190:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

Got two of these phones as Cingular Go Phones (we hate contracts), and gave our old Nokia 6340s to the kids

Pros:
Quad-Band - Who'd ever have thought you could get this on a $60 phone? Works much better in places the Nokias never did. P.S. - The PAYG coverage map on the Cingular site assumes a dual-band phone. Wonder what it's like with a quad?

Speakerphone

External display - so you can see who's calling before you open the phone. Also, I no longer feel the need to wear a watch. Makes a good flashlight, as you've seen in other reviews

Good loud ringtones

I'm told it uses the same charger as the RAZR, so RAZR owners, this might be a good phone for your older kids.

The free M2M with my Cingular PAYG

Cons:
Speakerphone needs to be louder and more sensitive.

Bogus data charges, as you've read in other reviews, but this is easily overcome by turning off the Live Ticker. Also, Call Forwarding costs a dime a pop on the PAYG plan, not a lot of people know that.

A real pain to turn on, so I just leave mine on all the time.

Should have a way to lock the side buttons, I've had my phone ring out loud when I thought I had it silenced, because the buttons got pushed in the case.

Doesn't vibrate nearly as hard as the Nokias did. I can have the phone on my hip and not feel it vibrate

No camera or Bluetooth, but c'mon, its a $60 phone!

Overall, the pros still outweigh the cons, which are minor by comparison.

Understand that Tmobile now sells a version of this phone called the V195 that has Bluetooth and an internal antenna.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I have owned this phone for 2 months now and the last 2 bills I have been billed for data transfers. I DON'T use my phone to get on the internet and I don't download anything from my phone. So why am I being billed for data transfers all the sudden since I bought this phone? I think this phone is accessing the internet on its own. It may have something to do with that aggravating ticker feature, which I deactivated that when I got the phone.
All I know is there is something fishy going on with this phone and me billed for data transfers I did not do. I only use my phone to talk and that is it!!!!!
Other than that it is a descent phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

TPnTX submitted this review of the Motorola V190:

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

My x497 had the unacceptable problem of the external volume button and it turned it's off a lot.

So I read reviews and the v190 seemed to have the best overall for a basic phone.

Well I'm not real pleased. I don't like the live ticker crap but I can live with it.

The speakerphone is not impressive and it does crackle at 7.

With the clam shell open and the phone sitting on a desk in front of you and facing you, the speaker is facing away from you. Thats crazy because the speaker isn't that good to begin with.

The reception is no better than the Samsung

It seems to keep changing the selected ring tone back to the default.

Pro's I don't know... It doesn't turn itself off and at least it rings instead of only vibrating like the x497

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

callie submitted this review of the Motorola V190:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I love this little phone! I bought it off of eBay recently and am thoroughly impressed with what it does. I originally bought it as a back up phone in case my dad's or my Nokia brand cell phones quit working for some reason. This phone is lightweight, small, and it has all of the features I could ever want. Who cares if it doesn't have a camera? That is what a digital camera is for! :) I can download mp3 ringtones onto this phone, unlike my Nokia 3120, and I can download themes, etc. So what if this phone is an entry level phone? It works great for what I need it for. I used to own a Motorola V180, which was unlocked, had a bad operating system, which was why it would always say I had no service. This phone works just fine and is unlocked,

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I have washed my 1st Razr, dropped the 2nd, and stepped on the tiny C139. What am I to do?

I picked up the v190 at RadioShack and I am very impressed. The phone reminds me of the v300 minus the camera. The keypad is alot better than it looks and it has a satisfying click when pressed. The screen is CSTN so it's not as crisp as a v557, but it serves it purpose well. Connecting to MEdia net is a snap with the dedicated browser key and I can connect in a matter of seconds. Voice quality is amazing. If you are using the speaker phone function, keep the volume below 6 because the speaker starts to crackle. It uses the Motorola OS and it only takes a few minutes to become familiar with it. I don't think there is anything that makes this phone stand out in a crowd because it is so basic. This phone is perfect as a starter phone or as a temporary replacement.

$60-RadioShack

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

It can be sitting on the table by itself and randomly say that there were data transfers that were unsolicited. Where I work we sell this phone and customers are starting to tell me the same is happening to them. It may be a Cingular problem but they are not 100% owning up to it. Because of this I highly don't recommend this phone until Cingular fixes this issue and credits all their users affected.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Kerbople submitted this review of the Motorola V190:

Overall rating: 2 (out of 5)

I'll get to the cons first:
- Biggest issue was the flimsiness of the case. Right out of the box the battery cover creaked when held. It was more noticeable as time went on.
-The hinge gets sloppy ~ it had 1-2mm play from side to side after 7 days normal use.
-Size - compared to other modern phones this one is still like a 2002 flip phone.
-Motorola Phone Tools v4.0 - $50 bucks for something that really should be included for free. The software is OK except for syncing contacts >> dated software.
-Reception is fair, but quality was lacking. Same carrier, same weather, same location, same SIM, different phone = better quality & no static.

Pros
-Motorola interface is quick to master, lots of menu options for tweaking.
-USB connection a big plus, it charges through the USB port on a mini-USB cable.
-Screen was acceptable.
-Cheap & Basic
-Battery life was average. Quick Recharge time.

Conclusion:
You're getting a basic phone, with a solid interface. No cameras, no bluetooth. I had to return this phone as it was to flimsy for my tastes. I'd suggest spending a few more dollars and invest in something more sturdy - such as the Samsung SGH-D407 (a very excellent phone for $50 more!)

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

GravityFails submitted this review of the Motorola V190:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Much like anything else, when it comes to phones, there's an awful lot of crap out there. You've got to be careful, otherwise you'll wind up with a lemon that you can't return and can't use for its intended purpose. That's why I'm grateful for this site.

If you're looking for a kitchen sink-type affair with a camera and 6 gigs of memory, obviously the V190 isn't for you. Not that there's anything WRONG with those kinds of phones, but sometimes you just want to make a call, y'know? You don't want to spend $400 on something that can crawl across the floor and plug in the electric blanket for you.

Welcome to the V190.

It's got an STN screen (slower, not as crisp as TFT), but it's the best STN screen I've seen. It doesn't have a camera. It does, however, have fine reception and absolutely awesome battery life. (One week on standby in a low-signal area.) It's durable. The buttons are large and easy to read. It's lightweight and easy to jam into a pocket. (Guys? You'll be glad to know that the external antenna is unobtrusive and, uh, "easy to ignore.")

Call quality is good, and the speaker can be used with the flip closed, which is a thoughtful feature in an entry-level phone. It's got a standard 2.5mm jack on the bottom (kind of awkward), and the charging port is a mini-USB interface.

Both displays are clear and bright, so much so that the internal display outshines the one on my Slider, and can be used as a flashlight in a pinch.

Gripes? I guess I have a few. It's impossible to silence the annoying low-battery warning without silencing the entire phone, ringers and all. That's a Motorola thing, from the V190 all the way up to the Razr and Slvr. Okay, only one gripe. Sue me.

All in all, Motorola has crammed a lot of value into this cute little $60 package. If you're after a Cingular prepaid phone, there's really no reason to look at any of the others, including the Nokia 6010, the Sony Z300, or the T290.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

hexydes submitted this review of the Motorola V190:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I'm probably going to approach this review differently than most people, but hopefully others in my position will find it useful. I currently have a contract with Cingular. My old phone (LG C1300) died (OLED display cracked), and thus, I needed a new phone. I was not eligible for the phone discount with Cingular for another 6 months. Well, I can't go another 6 months not being able to see my phone's display. After discussing with one of Cingular's in-store rep's what my options were, they said I could either do a partial renewal of my contract (1/2 discount), swap it with another family member's phone that does not need the display, or buy one of the pay-as-you-go "GoPhones", swap the SIM card in my current phone into that one, and use that. I opted for that option.

I did some looking around for phones. I wanted a good one that I wouldn't mind using for the next 6 months, but not a super one, since I will be getting a new phone with my contract renewal anyway. I just needed something to get by. Cingular had some cool ones in-store, but they said they could not sell them to me without a contract (super lame, my personal opinion). I checked WalMart in-store, but their phones were lame. I checked online and found a Sony Ericksson that looked ok, but then I checked RadioShack, and found the Motorola V190. I checked it out in-store, and it looked pretty good. I asked them to make sure I could return it if the SIM swap did not work, and they said that I could, so I went ahead and bought it ($59.99 after $10 instant rebate). I took the phone home and charged it. I swapped the SIM card out, turned the phone on, and instantly, it had found Cingular's network and set me up. Absolutely painless.

Well, I'm down to 250 characters left. Uhm, the phone has IM support through ICQ and AIM (and Yahoo but I don't use that), which is cool. The charger doubles as the data-port, which is just a standard USB (so I was able to make my own ringtones and wallpapers), which is cool.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

212pbnyc submitted this review of the Motorola V190:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

The Motorola V190 is an all around great phone. It has an awesome battery life, great reception (quad-band), wonderful sound quality (great speaker-phone), nice design, and extremely light weight! It includes software that suits all your communication needs: text messaging, IM, email, etc., as well as options for downloading ringers, wallpaper, etc. The menu is set-up a little differently then phones I've had in the past, but after a few days of use it became second nature. The only feature the phone lacks is Bluetooth. Cingular only offers this phone for Pay-As-You-Go, but I purchased the phone anyway. I've inserted my SIM card and it works just fine. They should think about adding this into their regular line-up of phones. So if you're someone like myself who doesn't need their phone to take pictures, record video, and wash the car, then this phone would be an ideal choice to consider. I hope that in the future, Cingular and other companies like Motorola will continue offering phones like this one. Let's face it, most entry-level phones just don't cut it!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
