jabberwocky submitted this review of the Sanyo RL-4920:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I still use this daily as my only phone now, in 2012, and I've had it for 9 years, and it just refuses to die or break down! I enjoy having a "unique" phone nowadays, plus I never do anything with my phone other than make/receive calls. People are shocked when they see how ancient of a phone I'm still using. It works just like new, with excellent reception and sound. I still have the original battery, and it'll still let me talk for about 2 hours, or stay charged on standby for 2-3 days. I've dropped it who knows how many times, and it just shrugs off the impacts like nothing. Of course, after 9 years of living in my pocket with my keys, it looks pretty rough, with maybe 10% of the silver finish left on it, and all the buttons' writing has long since worn off, but it's no big deal. Too bad they don't makes phones this sturdy and reliable anymore these days!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

ooglek submitted this review of the Sanyo RL-4920:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Sure, this puppy is old, cell-phone wise. It doesn't do all the fancy stuff those new-fangled contraptions can do. But as a phone, this sucker is the tops.

PROS:
* Great signal
* Phenomenal battery life
* Great sound quality
* Very durable, dropped many times, keeps ticking
* Menus are fast, virtually no delays
* 4 digit dialing (dial last 4 digits of a phone number, hit send, looks up in Contacts)
* Intuitive Operation
* Works as expected, no surprises
* Small and light while still very functional
* Well lit keys, raised and separated enough for good contact, nice travel
* Can tether to PC without Plan

CONS:
* Cannot access GPS features
* No camera
* 1MB! Memory
* No bluetooth (not that bad though)

This phone is about function, not flash or bling. It does what it was made phone -- making and receiving calls -- very well. The other features, such as a nice T9 system, fast menus, easy customization of soft-keys, nice keypad layout, nice keys.

It simply works with no surprises. It's not the latest and greatest, but if your goal is a great phone that'll last, here you go.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

If you let the phone get too close to your cheek the other end can not understand you (makes it seem like even worse reception)
- (personal opinion) I am getting to hate exposed keys. I dont like putting my phone in my pocket and hate keyguards (they make it difficult to use the phone in dark areas)
- Can not store addresses in the phone book (Boy I mess my startac with the organizer)
- Ear jack is weak and faulty (two have broken on me)

All in all I would not recommend this phone to a more than average cell user.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I have had no signal problems with it, including when I am out in rural areas. It has great reception and sound quality, and the features are easily accessible and easy to use. What makes it so handy for me is its toughness though. I am notoriously hard on my phones, and after many drops, sit-on's, mashed against walls, and the like, it still has not a scratch on it. My previous phone, another Sanyo, was in shambles after a few weeks of use. Definitely my new phone of choice.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

ianh submitted this review of the Sanyo RL-4920:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I have not found a single thing I dislike about this phone yet. The sound quality is superb as others have mentioned, I was really surprised how clear it was the first time I made a call on it. I had previously owned the RL2000 and I just have to thank whomever for FINALLY building a proper SMS interface into a Sprint Sanyo phone. Struggling with the minibrowser on the RL2000 to use SMS was awful.

I noticed that the "Data-Capable" listing for the RL-4920 in the comparison section on this website is listed as "-". I have tested interfacing this phone as a modem with a laptop and data cable and it connects to the Internet perfectly and with far less latency than my old phone. The column should read "Yes". It uses the same data cable as older models so throwing out your accessories to upgrade is unnecessary. If you have the RL-2000 or the 4900, BUY THIS PHONE. You won't be disappointed.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Breeegz submitted this review of the Sanyo RL-4920:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I upgraded recently from an LG 5350. My options for upgrade included camera phones, and I heavily considered them. What really won me over for this phone is the reported 5.5 hours of talk time. 5.5 hours of talk time was about 5.25 hours longer than my poor abused LG clamshell's battery could muster anymore.

My wife currently owns a Sanyo 4900 (few years old) and coverage compared to this older Sprint PCS powerhouse is near identical (after we got a firmware update for her phone).

Battery life is similar during heavy usage. (the 4920 edges a win, but then again my wife's phone is a few years old)

User Interface is nearly identical with only minor differences.

4920-The best phone I have ever owned
4900-The best phone my wife has ever owned (I tried to convince her to upgrade so I could use the RTT feature, however I was unsuccessful)

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The battery seems to have endless life, more than the reported 7 days if you ever need to have it unplugged that long. The thing that would make it the best phone ever is a camera, I know thats not important to alot of people but I'm still fairly young and enjoy that feature on a phone. I recommend this phone to everyone, you won't be dissapointed.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

However, we are not impressed with the sound quality. I don't know if we just happened to get two bad phones or if this is just a problem with all of the RL4920's. If I call a land line, the phone is clear BUT, if I call a cell phone, the sound quality is horrible. It sounds as if the person is holding something in front of the phone. The other person's voice is very muffled! I still have 7 days of my 14 day trail left to decide what to do with the phone: keep it for the talk time or return it because I can't hear them clearly? I wish they made all cell phones with 5.5 hours of talk time!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

psilvio submitted this review of the Sanyo RL-4920:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I had the 4900 for a little over 2 years before switching to the 4920 and the only reason I switched was because I decided it was time to get a new phone. And if it's possible to improve a great phone Sanyo did. I love the smaller size of the phone, which was my only complaint about the 4900. I don't need a camera and all that on my phone, so the features on this phone fit me perfectly.

I use the charger and the PC Sync chords from my 4900, so there was a cost savings for me there. Also, the PC sync function works great and there seems to be more space for your personal ringers and wallpapers. People say they can hear me better with the 4920, so the microphone has been improved too, although I didn't have too many problems before. The reception picks up even better than the 4900 did as I can now receive in a couple areas that were previously drop zones for me.

I wouldn't buy any other phone than a Sanyo phone and they have another winner here in my book. A perfect phone for someone that wants all the bells and whistles without the extra cost of a camera.

If I do have to say something I dislike about the phone, it's the fact that the display lights up while charging. But I just put the phone face down on my dresser and it doesn't bother me. I just hope this doesn't cause the screen to burn out faster or anything.

Great phone and I highly recommend it, if you're on the fence. Make sure you get the software upgrade for it to resolve the speakerphone problem.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

nightsbridgecrossing submitted this review of the Sanyo RL-4920:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I recently switched to the 4920 from its considerably larger cousin, the RL2000. Not only is my new phone smaller, but it packs a bigger punch. The coverage and reception is about the same as all my other Sanyo phones (4500, 4900, RL2000) have been: SUPERB! The speaker is much more clear, and suprisingly louder. The screen has been drastically upgraded from a few thousand colors to over 65 thousand. This is by far the best of the series. I think some of the earlier reviews were unfair, judging the PCS network, instead of the phone itself. Sprint isn't for everyone, but for those of us who do use it, the 4920 may be the best phone on the network.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

jmeitzen submitted this review of the Sanyo RL-4920:

Overall rating: 1.5 (out of 5)

After reading stellar reviews on this site, I decided to try this phone out. My previous experience has been with Cingular and ATT Wireless. ATT Wireless has probably the best phone selection but easily the worst customer service I've ever experienced. Sprint's customer service is average based on about 4-5 calls into them while I had this phone. The coverage area with this phone compared to a Cingular Nokia 6340i is definitely not as good despite the apparent small advantages on their coverage maps. I liked that the antenna is extendable but in one case, when I showed one bar, the phone didn't ring when my girlfriend sitting beside me dialed me from her Cingular (GSM only) phone which had 3 of 5 bars (east of San Antonio about 50 miles). The battery life is exceptional and the speakerphone speaker is VERY loud. It's not a full duplex speakerphone which makes it difficult for the other party to hear you at times while on the speaker phone and the voice quality is nowhere near as good to the person on the other end as when off speaker phone. Another occasion in north central Ark last week, I was getting either to 1 bars and a buddy there with a Nokia 6340 had 6 of 7 bars. Two other bad things are that if the screen is not lit up, it's nearly impossible to see what's on the screen. When it is lit up, the color screen was fair although that's not of importance to me. The cost of Sprint's plan was also at least $10 more per month for only about 50 more minutes per mo. (I have a grandfathered plan with Cingular which I've gone back to). The phone's silver finish will probably do just like my buddy's Sanyo silver phone where the paint wore off after about 6 mos. of heavy use and exposed the real cheap light yellow plastic underneath. The internet access seemed very good albeit this is the first time I've ever used that capability from a cell phone. If coverage area is key, snag a 6340i from a Cingular store before they run out (it's being discontinued).

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Tweaker_22 submitted this review of the Sanyo RL-4920:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

This phone is super cool. People talk about an echo, all they have to do is turn down the reciever volume. The echo is gone then. I recommend this phone to everyone. The reception is also awesome!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

JWP submitted this review of the Sanyo RL-4920:

Overall rating: 0 (out of 5)

I have tried the 4920 side by side with my 4900. It drops calls and shows signal strength of 1 or none while the 4900 has a solid 4 bars and makes the same phone calls without any problems. I have tested these phones in my city as well as on the interstate. Even within 3 miles of my local cell site the 4920 will not perform when the 4900 executes perfectly. I tried 2 different 4920's and they both operate the same. Reluctantly I have had to return my 4920. I believe this phone may be designed and set up for metropolitan use and will not perform in a rural area as well until some system changes are made.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

yifan17 submitted this review of the Sanyo RL-4920:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

I have purchased this phone before 6 days based on the superb reviews. I was thrilled by it at first. The reviews seem to be right. All functions are working perfectly. Till today. Maybe it was malfunctioning slightly before and I didn't notice it at that time because the symptoms are similar like the ones you would get by weak signal. Today all the phone calls are breaking up and echoing. The conversations are unbearable. I can't understand a single sentence/word without exhausting my hearing and my imagination.
Then I found the real problem: It is the speaker phone. The speaker phone is broken. It echos without end. If the other party says "Can you hear me?", the speaker phone on my cell will echo "me me e e e e e e..." till another word is spoken. The voice sounds really scary.
At least my roommate and I had a great laugh testing it out. Tomorrow I am going to exchange it. Yes, I am giving it another chance. I really hope that my current phone is only a rare sample of a good model.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

But today she was able to talk to me all the way there and only lost a connection one time.
PRO
Great signal
strong battery
great size
great color
great speaker
cool feature
basically she and i love the phone, I question the only she and i need to do is get use to the ready link.

brian0754 submitted this review of the Sanyo RL-4920:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I use every feature this phone has to offer. From the digit echo to the ready link. outstanding reception I live in Indianapolis so of course I get great reception (which is a surprise to me since I have sprint, but I work at RS so there is no bad talking about sprint for me.) great voice quality, and small and handsome, and with my one-touch access to messaging I'm sending out sms messages in a heart beat. Full lock is also great just in case you lose your phone. You have to have a password just to answer it! Ready Link is nuts, push the button, wait for the tone and talk away! Sleep Mode saves the battery even more by not sending out such a strong signal, like when your talking on it, but it sends the signal just enough to get and send calls and messages. Oh Yeah the antenna does stick out so much!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

MelbGuy submitted this review of the Sanyo RL-4920:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I traded up from the Samsung N240, and am so glad I did. While the Sanyo is a little thicker than the Samsung, it's about the same height and width, so it works for me (I wanted a small-ish phone). The fact that I now have service in my house is a HUGE advantage to this phone. It seems that the statements that Sanyo does better coverage is true ... no more twisting my head against the window to get a signal.

I love the screen and the amount of information that it includes when a call is coming in, or just reviewing information. I am currently taking advantage of the free trial for Spring PCS Vision, and I'm not that keen on the web browsing limitations, but that is just screen size issues. The simple integration of text messaging someone is awesome, and I'm liking that a great deal.

I've yet to test out the Ready-Link feature - still waiting for some friends to get online with that; but I have used it as a voice recorder, and I love that. I used to have to leave myself voice messages if I wanted to remember something, now I just record on the phone and review later - very handy. This feature along will probably be enough to keep me away from activating RL.

Overall, I'm exceptionally pleased with this phone, and glad that I was in the right spot at the right time to get such a great deal.

Not sure if I can offer any negatives on the phone at this point, so I'm rating it a 5!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

mrayw submitted this review of the Sanyo RL-4920:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

The 4500 was good,4900 great and the 4920 is best I have had. I did use the VGA1000 for several months and was happy with it . Then replaced it with Sanyo 7300 and was not satisfied. I usually keep phones til they die but since 4900 the 4920 is the first KEEPER. Actually the VGA1000 was but the charging pin came loose, which was caused by my charging and talking as this pulls on the pin!
Pros;great reception,battery, dials easily for a small phone and I have large hands. Starts up quickly after shutdown. Finally a Sprint speaker phone that is capable of actual use. Small and light. Best sound and earpiece of any cell I have used. No sweet spot on earpiece! Only for talking, push to talk and vision! No useless camera crap, folks this is actually a working phone and a great one at that.
Cons: I did not find any!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
