Kellis1 submitted this review of the Motorola MPx220:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

This is my Absolute favorite phone ever!!! It has a cool sleek look, One of the few clam-shell pocket PCs around. I love that its a clam-shell. This protects the vital parts of the phone while it is in my pocket. It has great signal reception (cingular in west Texas) it works in places that my previous phones would not (previous phones were also cingular) I had very little trouble with this phone and if I wasn't hard on phones I would still have this phone. I am a pool service professional so consequently most of my phones suffer water damage at one point or another. I purchased 6 MPx220s over the last year due to this problem with my occupation. Other then water damage this phone is VERY durable. I have dropped it on many occasions, always comes right back on with out any trouble. One of these phone even took a swim to the bottom of the pool and still turned on after allowing it to dry out. It worked fine for another 3 months until it ended up in the bottom of another pool. The second time around it was not so lucky. Most of the 6 MPxs I went through were subjected to water 2 or three times before finally kicking the bucket. I was never afraid to pull the phone out and "show it off" when asked "What phone do you have?". This is a respectable phone among any crowd. It is sophisticated without being ugly, or to large as mentioned before the style of the phone is small and way cool. Most of my friends fell in love with this phone when I showed them what it was and what it is capable of. I could not say anything bad about this phone, it has been a wonderful business companion, I think after my current phone kaks I'll buy another MPx220.

PROS:
Very durable
Great applications for business people
Great speaker
Easy to use and navigate
Very stylish

CONS:
Motorola's magnificent charger connection
Music could not play very loud

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

gregleg submitted this review of the Motorola MPx220:

Overall rating: 3.5 (out of 5)

I used this phone for 3 years on Cingular/AT&T, and only switched (to a Samsung SLM) because the 220 finally died.

Pros:

Quad-band GSM (worked fine when I was traveling in Europe)

Very easy to sync with Outlook using ActiveSync (which I already had installed anyway for my PDA)

One of the earlier phones I was aware of allowing user-customized MP3/WMA ring tones (but see below)

Predictive text entry in the phonebook, making looking up a name simple (for instance I could filter enough to find my friend Nicole's phone number by hitting 6-4-2, rather than having to type 6-6-4-4-4-2-2-2, at which point I may as well directly dial :) )

Plenty of software available due to the Windows Mobile OS (including new options such as Google Maps).

Clamshell design (well, that's a pro for me)

Cons:

Battery life was spotty, sometimes the phone would just run itself down

Battery contacts were intermittent -- sometimes the phone would just turn off without warning even WITH a powered-up battery installed. Inserting a few pieces of paper in the battery compartment to force snug contacts between the battery and the phone fixed this, but a used kludge shouldn't have been necessary

The charging cable contacts on the bottom of the phone stopped working correctly in my phone, I HAD to use the USB cable to charge the phone rather than the A/C adapter. Not a huge issue, but annoying. (I verified that it wasn't just my A/C adapter, I borrowed the charger from a coworker with the same phone and that one didn't work for me either)

Using custom MP3 ring tones resulted in a rather quiet ring, even though I'd edited the audio file and normalized the volume to max before encoding the MP3. The identical audio file re-encoded to WMA made for a much louder ringer.

Other comments:
My SLM holds the signal a bit better than my 220 did, and is definitely lighter, but to be fair it's also a much newer design.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

chocolateman85006 submitted this review of the Motorola MPx220:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

For an older phone, it sure holds it's weight. It's definitely better than the Q. Not an iPhone killer, but it does what it needs to do.

Pros:
Windows Mobile. I can try to use other programs, but they all fall short.
Clamshell Smartphone. Not too many of those exist in America {Except for my 3125 that I needed to get rid of}.
Okay Camera and video {What made it stay out of the "Cons" is that the zoom is phenomenal}
Can hold my 2gig card with no problems.
Great reception.
Loud mp3's.
File transfers with both Bluetooth and Infrared.
I can read my bible on it.
I got it really cheap.
It's NOT the Q!
Takes Mini SD's, which I can find a 2gig for $24.99.
It has so many menus. It's complex, which I like.

Cons:
Finding an adequate case for it.
Not buying it when it first came out.
No Stereo Bluetooth.
Memory card is hard to get out at times.
It does take a minute to load up; but once It does, it's all gravy. It's only bothersome when you're expecting a call.
I have to move a song/clip to the phone memory to use it as a ringtone.
32 MB of internal memory {The ram sucks too, but that's why my primary line is a Blackjack}.

Definitely an oldie, but goodie. For talking, programs, bubble breaker {then called "jawbreaker"}, and the occasional picture or two, this phone is great. Except for the camera, it's MUCH better than my Nokia 6682. It's the phone that's hard to beat; and may be for sometime.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

drew489 submitted this review of the Motorola MPx220:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I've had this phone twice now. I had it about 2 years ago, then when I broke my SDA, I bought another one from a friend.

Pros:
- Smartphone flip phone, not many of these around
- Flash on the camera
- Tactile sensation on buttons is good
- Battery life
- Quad band

Cons:
- Slightly buggy software
- Picture quality is pretty low
- Dropping calls as it gets old (TMobile service)
- Looks...kinda looks outdated nowadays, and rightfully so, it's a 3 year old phone.

Overall this is probably the best bang for the buck phone on the market. For under $100 on Ebay you can get this phone unlocked. It has pretty much every feature you would ever need, Bluetooth, Smartphone, cam w/ flash, flip phone, etc...

I'm replacing it w/ the dash...we'll see how it compares.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

maradamc submitted this review of the Motorola MPx220:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

I've had this phone for 6 months, acquired from a former AT&T user. I was excited that I could sync w/my PC but the joy stops there.

Since acquiring this phone I've wanted to turn it into a skipping stone or a whip it against a hard brick wall several times. SPARE YOURSELF THE FRUSTRATION!

PROS:
- Can sync w/PC
- Uses predictive text & number recognition when searching address book (e.g. 2-3-2 will list all entries with 232 in number, and combos of abc-def-abc characters in name)... very slick
- Concise navigation to get to often accessed areas of phone
- Vast onboard mem for TXT msgs
- Signal quality is better than some of my earlier phones

CONS:
- OS stalls often; needs a reboot once to several times a week
- Long time to shutdown & reboot
- Alarm & Time are set on same screen; I've accidentally changed my time when I meant to set my alarm
- Cannot pull up a number in call log and send a text message unless it's a stored # in addrbk
- Cannot figure out how to transfer TXT msgs off of phone
- STUBBORN, STUBBORN, STUBBORN - when calling a number, it will default to the BlueTooth device. While ringing you can turn off the HandsFree device via the menu but as soon as it connects, it switches right back so you have to scramble through the menu to deactivate it again before the other person hangs up on you. Same with speakerphone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

atf0016 submitted this review of the Motorola MPx220:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

Although over two years old, the phone is still better than many of the phones cingular/new att currently carries. Currently at Cingular, I worked for GameStop previously. Had a discount Helio devices and plans. Basically, what Helio has done is rent towers from Sprint and bought a bunch of updated phones in Korea.

The MPx220 is comparable to the Helio KickFlip in just about every way; the Windows OS still being superior.

PROS:
Still has great features after two years

CONS:
No 3G internet
Old clamshell design

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

WxGuy1 submitted this review of the Motorola MPx220:

Overall rating: 1.5 (out of 5)

I've had a couple of MPx220s, and I've had plenty of problems. After owning it for only a couple of months, the phone would not turn on. When I'd try to power up, it would show a blank screen. I sent it into Motorola, and they fixed it, though it took an unacceptable 5 weeks to get it back.

The phone occassionally shut off when it was closed quickly. To prevent this, I had to very slowly and gently close the flip. Shortly after owning the phone for a little more than a year, the charging terminal began to be problematic. I could not charge the phone! Every time I powered down the phone, I needed to do a hard reset (sometimes more than once), to get the phone to power up again. I sent the phone into Motorola, who take 4-5 weeks to fix it and get it back to me. The phone came back with a few different marks on it, so I assume I just got a refurbished one.

Well, the same problem continued. If the battery gets too low and the phone turns off, I need to do a hard reset to get the phone back on. Now, it doesn't power on at all. Previously, I could run the phone solely via the power cord (i.e. removing the battery but having the phone 'plugged in'). Now, nothing works. Nada, zilch, zero power. I haven't ever been able to go more than a few weeks without having do reset the phone, which makes it almost useless to load programs and data since it gets deleted regularly.

I assume I just got lemons, but 2 for 2 is bad. I was never able to flash the firmware (using either the online or offline updaters) as well. In addition, the reception on the first phone was horrible -- I would consistently drop calls and not have reception, even though my wife's phone (v551) would be just fine. Heck, I needed to bring in my external antenna that I use on my car in order to get any reception in my apartment.

I hate the Moto charging port. It's quite fragile, and I know that they designed it this way. They bank on it going out so folks need to buy new chargers. Grr.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

bg1256 submitted this review of the Motorola MPx220:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

This is the best phone I've owned, but there are a few drawbacks.

Strengths:
Attractive. The buttons are big enough to actually enter text, and the arrows are much bigger than most Motorola's, making navigation simply.
Windows Mobile technology makes synch'ing with your PC simple. The data cord is included (saving ~$30), and it automatically syncs with Outlook.
The camera takes decent pictures in good lighting, but don't expect anything great. After all, it's only 1.2 mega pixels.
The fact that it has a speaker phone is good.
Supports bluetooth AND 2.5 mm technology.

Weaknesses:
My main problems are with Windows Mobile, not the phone, so I'll start there.
First, like anything from Microsoft, it freezes and needs to be restarted (at least twice/week).
It's complicated to learn. Once you do, however, it's fairly easy.
Not enough shortcuts. For example, it takes 4 keystrokes to get to my alarm clock. That should be customizable.

Now, for problems with the hardware of the phone itself:
The screen could be bigger, considering its function. Even compared to the RZR, its screen is a little small.

The overall volume is too soft. Setting it to outdoor only means that it has the volume at maximum by default. It does not mean it raises the maximum potential volume.

Both speakers (handset and speakerphone) distort slightly at the highest volume level. Annoying when driving or in a loud room.

The speakerphone is almost never loud enough. It almost always requires turning it to the highest volume, even in a room by oneself.
Moreover, the speakerphone is in a bad place on the phone, and it cannot be used while the phone is closed. The speaker is on the front of the phone, which means when the phone is open, the speaker is pointed away from the user. Great engineering there.

Although it's the best phone I've used, I can't give it 5 because there are still some bugs that need to be improved. But, now that I've used a smartphone, I will most likely not go back.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I'm just getting ready to buy another because of the troubles with the "latest" one. The first phone I had, the screen completely crashed. I called cingular and they had no problem sending me the replacement under warranty. BTW this was really the only trouble I had, this is a nice phone when there aren't issues...
The second phone, right out of the box, had problems... The battery cover is HELL to put on... it turns off randomly sometimes, vibrates constantly when people call and won't let me answer, and now doesn't seem to come on at all...... Plus accessories are a pain to find...
All and all a good phone with some great bells and whistles, but not worth the effort of messing with.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

itisisaysme submitted this review of the Motorola MPx220:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

Compared to the MPX200, which I also own and will soon be selling on eBay, this phone is a dream come true! I've been shopping for a full-featured next-gen phone with Windows OS for a long time. Thought I'ld found it with the MPX200. Boy was I wrong! But the MPX220 is THE BEST PHONE I'VE EVER USED! AND IT LOOKS GOOD TOO! I say BUY IT, and cherish it like a girlfriend who deepthroats...

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

kaiaj44 submitted this review of the Motorola MPx220:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

This is the best phone I've ever owned! It's a good phone and great PDA. Windows Mobile for Smartphone 2003 is a fantastic operating system. I bought lots of add-on software so I can do just about anything with this phone. Except for the lack of a qwerty keyboard, it's like a tiny PC.

Though I did list below some "cons" for this phone, the only one that makes me keep looking for the perfect phone is the lack of a qwerty keypad. I didn't buy the phone for the camera, and who needs speakerphone with a bluetooth headset?

I had the Treo 650 before this and hated it. This phone holds a much better signal than Treo.

Pros:
Holds good signal on Cingular network
Small form factor
Great display, bright & high resolution
Great operating system
Like a tiny PC
Good button placement, intuitive
Seamless sync with Outlook even notes with 3rd party software
Relatively fast processor
Battery good
Bluetooth
External display

Cons:
Ringer not very loud, so I set it to vibrate & ring which solved the problem.
Speaker not great
No qwerty keypad
Camera not great, but not many phones have good cameras

All in all this is such an amazine piece of technology. Very highly recommended.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

BryanThrasher submitted this review of the Motorola MPx220:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I looked long and hard to find the right phone. My last phone was the iPAQ 6315. It certainly has it strengths, but not enough of them.

CONS:
1) The speaker phone is too soft - This is not a problem for me, but I'd agree with others' opinion
2) Basic phone features like Call History are not easy to get to. This may be my on ignorance.
3) The Camera is not that great, not as good as the RAZR. Flash, what flash? it's a light.

PROS:
Too many to list...but I'll try
1) Voice quality is great.
Signal strength is great. (when there's signal to be had)
1) ActiveSync had be up and going with 2000 contacts, emails, and my calendar in seconds

2) Bluetooth works very well, but I believe the persistent softness of my voice to callers is a headset problem not the phone's problem. I am able to use Bluetooth with ActiveSync. The trick is twofold: a) register the computer with the phone b) Configure Window's BT driver to receive through a COM port. Then set Activesync to use that COM port. You have to manually initiate synchronization.

3) This phone IS compatible with Cingular's FastForward feature even though their web site didn't say so. This really saves me on my minutes while letting me have one phone number.

Most of the things I like about this phone are related to it being a Windows SmartPhone.

I'm not ecstatic over Cingular's customer service. I would give them a B. It has been hit or miss and I have even dropped a call with a support person that did not seem knowledgeable only to call back to get someone else. There are smart people in the organization, so be persistent.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Cingular does not offer insurance on any data/smart phones/pda's ect. The only phone that resembles a smart phone that Cingular does offer insurance on in the Nokia 6682. And comming from a 4 mo. user of this phone, I can say with confidence that this phone is absolutely a piece of junk. This phone was pushed back 3 times in a year back when at&t wireless was supposed to get it. And then when Cingular finally got a hold of it it was recalled 2 more times! I don't know about anyone else here, but I wouldn't buy a phone that has this many set backs, is this expensive, and is no real protection plan for. BUYER BEWARE... This is not the phone for anyone. PERIOD.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

This is the best phone I've ever had because:

1) Small - compact, easy to carry around
2) Sound quality - customers and associates say I'm clearer than I've ever been. Also true with my Moto HS850 Bluetooth headset.
3) Everything worked the first time. iTAP text input, voice recognition, synchronizing my ~2000 contact database (hard to find phones with this capacity)
4) Immediately sychronized with Outlook with no difficulty - on both Mac and PC. Unlike Moto A780 "Mobile Phone Tools" that took 60 minutes (yes!) to synchronize, and often lost data. Microsoft software is better than some people, anyway...
5) Dialing and name lookup is extremely fast
6) Menus are intuitive
7) Photos are good enough (not great)
8) Battery life is fine. I talk 2-4 hours per day and still have 50% battery at the end of the day.
9) MiniSD memory is used by system for everything (including contacts!) but core phone software. So I can have a picture and custom ringtone for every important contact!

Can't give it 5 stars because
1) Voice recognition doesn't work with Bluetooth (why not?)
2) In-call operations through the Menu button are too clicky for me - too many steps to Mute in traffic, combine calls for a Conference, and such.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I looked and looked and all that turned up was the mpx 220 I read the reviews and asked others but I got mixed responses so I said I will give it a try myself, well here we go!

Pros:
voice recognition
Other than that because of the price NON!

Cons:
Bluetooth does not support voice dial
speakerphone is Junk!!
Camera should not be called a megapixel
It is extremely hard to use I am a cell phone expert and it was hard for me to use!!
The software that comes with it is almost useless.

In closing do your self a favor do not waste your money and remember 50,000 screaming Elvis fans cant all be wrong.

Recommended phone nokia 6682

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Not that I had many before except occasional freeze ups (windows OS go figure)

Pros:

RECEPTION...this phone make syou think you are on the Verizon network. (I also have Verizon service on another phone)

PICTURES...look great for a phone

VOICE DIAL is fantastic and does NOT have to be taught,

BT Flexibility file transfers are a breeze with or without a cable. Sync is fast and automatic.

Battery life is good for such a powerful Smart Phone. But this is subjective.

MP3 ringtones.....no more cheezy midi files.
SPEAKER PHONE is acceptable for a tiny speaker.
NO antenna
Solid build I have dropped this phone alot and dropped it in water. Dried it out and it worked fine. Little paper "giveaway" is now red though.

CONS
Cannot make voice call from BT.

If it were not for that I would have given his phone a 5.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Spartan 104 submitted this review of the Motorola MPx220:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

This is my first Windows Mobile device and I'm loving it so far. There are so many applications available for this platform that it's dizzying. The MPx220 is a great phone packed with a multitude features and is a solid performer with a few quirks.

Pros:
**It's a smartphone (there are so many useful and fun apps available for WM2003 devices)
**Can play mp3's, wma's, movies, games, etc.
**Variety of connectivity options - bluetooth, IR, USB
**Decent RF performance
**Stylish design (I'm a sucker for clamshells)
**Nice and bright main display
**Expandable memory
**Great Battery Life
**Voice recognition feature
**Syncs with Outlook

Cons:
**Earpiece volume is decent enough for me (using asian 3.46 ROM), however the speaker is another story. Distortion at higher volume levels.
**No EDGE...No point of using IE at GPRS speeds
**No Wi-Fi
**Would've been nice if you could upgrade to WM5
**Megapixel camera? I don't think so...

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

glick2 submitted this review of the Motorola MPx220:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I hesitantly bought my mpx220 to replace my smt5600 which had extremely poor reception at my home. After reading all the horrors stories about the phone I wasn't going to even bother. I spoke to a rep at Cingular who said the phones software had been updated, so I decided to give it a try. I am glad I did!!!

pros
Beautiful design
Real good volume ( a little on the tinny side but sill clear)
Operating system is smooth and fast
Screen is bright and clear
Reception is just exceptional
blue tooth is great
Keys are large and easy to use
voice recognition is fantastic
Internet connection is nice and fast
battery life is unbelievable

Cons
camera is so-so ( who cares though)
no included headphones

This phone is by all means not perfect but if
reception and a good stable operating system are important then this phone delivers. Compared to the SMT5600 it is superior in RF and and operating system speed.
Obviously Motorola finally got their act together on this phone. It finally works the way it was designed to.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
