gerilynn129 submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A680 / VM-A680:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I have owned this phone for over 5 years. That's right, 5 years. I have had newer phones a few times but I always choose to go back to this one. When I say I have had this phone for five years let me please explain that I mean that the phone I use every day is 5 years old. I have never needed a replacement. I have dropped it hundreds of times, and even gotten it wet a bunch of times. It just won't die. I am a working mom, and if you need a phone that will last through years and years of rough wear and tear this would be a GREAT choice. Most people would freak out if a one year old was walking around with their cell phone, worrying that it will get damaged. Not I, because my phone is the most durable phone I have ever seen. I lock my phone so my one year old can't make calls and away he can go with it. One of the best things about this phone is even though it is 5 years old it still looks brand new. If you look closely it seems to be a little scratched but from even 10 inches away it looks brand new. They sure don't make them the way they used to.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

killmeimbill submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A680 / VM-A680:

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

I got this phone from my cousin as a temporary until I got my UpStage fixed (in all I owned it for 2 months) and by the time I got this phone it was quite outdated. The battery was OK but the reception was next to awful. I could not text on it either. The camera was OK but all the pictures I took with it appeared somewhat "washed out". The plastic over the screen on the front of the phone was very weak and it broke very easily. Internet was slow and at times it would make the phone shut itself off and sometimes people calling me got sent directly to my voicemail and when they left their message it could take days for my phone to tell me that I had a voicemail. I also hate to say this but the ring tones that came on the phone were somewhat "lame" (not very loud either) and the vibrate function was very weak. I also had many pictures of the inside of my pocket. On a final side note, the alarm clock function did not always work and when it did it would sometimes not go off at the right time but go off a couple hours early or a couple hours late (which is very bad).

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

riverbrat21 submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A680 / VM-A680:

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

I had this phone a year ago, for a year. I just though I'd come on here to read the reviews to see if anyone else had the same problems...and guess what, they did. I loved this phone when it was new. I love the size, the mirror in the front was actually my most favorite part of the phone cuz it was cute. This phone holds a lot of pictures...way way more than my newer samsung A880...anyway 2 weeks shy of being 1 years old the sound went out on it!! I was sitting there watching one of my videos and could hear it crackle then no sound at all!! I couldn't believe it! So my ringer stopped working...you could still make and receive calls and hear and talk just fine but no ringer(it does vibrate) or sound for the videos!! I was soo mad, called sprint and fought with them for hours and days! They said I could take the phone to a nearby service center ( which is 3 hours away from where I live) and they would try to fix it as long as there was no noticeable damage to the phone...because then it would be considered my fault for the phones problem! Needless to say I have a few typical scratches on the back of the phone and figured they would try to say I dropped it and broke the sound somehow so I didn't even bother driving that far to take it in...anyway I think they ended up giving me a little bit more of a discount on a new phone. There obviously is some type of a bug in the phone that comes about after a year. So enjoy the phone while you have the ringer and sound because it'll be gone before you know it!!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

mrhockey123 submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A680 / VM-A680:

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

I've had this phone for almost a year and a half, and while it was a good phone with good reception, it certainly had its odd behaviours that progressively got worse as it aged.

Firstly, if I closed the flip without sticking a finger in between the "halves"to soften the blow, the phone would turn off probably because the battery would momentarily lose contact. I would have to turn the phone back on manually. I sent the phone away for repair and that didn't help.

Now, within the past few months, it has been acting even more strangely. Although the reception had been outstanding before, the phone has started to sound like a 20 year old cheap cordless at times. I have to hang up and redial and then the connection improves. Maybe it's dirty, who knows.

In case you're thinking my phone is simply a lemon, my sister bought the same phone about a week before I did, and she has been noticing the same degredation in call quality and in general functionality of the phone.

If you're looking to buy a phone off ebay because you lost your old one and are in a contract, go for this phone as it's fairly good even when it starts its downhill spiral. If, however, you're considering buying this phone on a contract, i would say don't sign anything longer than a year because your phone won't survive longer than that. If you want, get the protection plan, but my experience has been that nothing actually gets repaired.

This phone's longevity is either due to "planned obsolecense" or just shoddy Samsung construction, and as this is my 2nd Samsung phone, I'm much more likely to believe it is shoddy construction.

Of course, that's just my two cents.

By the way, a great way to save power is to turn "power save" on. Your screen will be dimmer, but it's still plenty bright enough. One of the major pluses of this phone is the insanely beautiful LCD

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

southwestm81 submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A680 / VM-A680:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I've had this phone for a month, so this is a preliminary review. I'm using it on the MTS Mobility CDMA digital/1X network in Winnipeg, MB, CA.

Pros
-Excellent display and resolution. The colours are crisp, vibrant and bright.

-Visually appealing, with regards to both the display and the physical look of the phone. Compact, yet feels good in the hand, solid and the keys are easy to navigate (unless you have really large hands).

-Brilliant blue backlighting on the keypad (waaay better than green)

-Call quality (network and hardware dependant) is very good. Callers on my end sound crisp and clear, no compliants on the other end. Reception is great, I have yet to find a place where I don't get reception (in my basement I get full bars).

-Camera (VGA) is very good, takes very good photos (it being a cell phone). Fun frames a nice novelty, 10X zoom! 3 resolutions (High gets 38 photos, Med gets 121, low gets 180).

-Camcorder is good ( again, for it being a cell phone, can use as screen savers or plays when assigned to a specific number in your phone book).

-User interface very good, inuitive, runs smoothly, many customizable features.

-texting is a breeze

-Web browser is pretty good, resonable speeds.

-Ear piece volume is very good

-Ringer volume is pretty good, though not having an external speaker for the ringer like the A650 or A670 makes it much harder to hear when it goes off. The ringer volume IS an improvment over the A660/VI-660. Needs to be cracked up almost max to be audiable in places with a lot of noise.

Cons
-video is choppy when in motion, can only take 15 second clips, better quality when you hold still while filming.

-Battery
-on par with Samsungs rated talk time of 3.2 hours (digital) when used for strictly talking and texting.
-however, camcorder really drains battery, camera is not as hard on battery with moderate use
-recommend extended battery (OEM ones are easily available for cheap on eBay)

Satisfied overall! Watch for an update!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I recently just upgrade to the LG-225 and it's a good phone but it had nothing on this Samsung 680. The ONLY thing that the samsung was missing was the speaker phone option. Other than that it was the best. I did have some problems with mine, the sound went out on it for no reason, when someone would call me it would sound that music on a radio station that wasn't coming in all the way. When I took it into sprint they said it had to of been my fault so they wouldn't fix it so I had to upgrade to something different.
But I have to say if that wouldn't of happend I would still have this phone because I was the best !!!! I wish it wouldn't have got discontinued cause I would have just got another one. :o)
So to anyone that has this phone, You are a very lucky person, hold on to it for as long as you can!!!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

This phone is very attractive and compact in size. The camera works well and I also like the camcorder feature, which I have not yet found a use for but enjoy it just the same. For all of the features this phone boasts, the battery life is pretty good. I charge my phone twice a week with normal usage. I especially like how easy it is to navigate and the one touch speed dial option. I find the reception to be pretty good since Samsung is known more for pretty phones instead of functional ones. I had the opportunity to upgrade to the Sanyo MM8300 and after a few days of using it went right back to my old phone. I don't know if it was because I became used to my old phone features or simply didn't like the bulk of the Sanyo--maybe both. Like I mentioned earlier, there are few problems I have with the phone. I would prefer if it included a speakerphone. Overall, I find this to be a wonderful phone and I absolutely love it!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Great signal, great battery life, gets kinda hot when on the phone for a while, small size.

Now the cons:
No bluetooth, no sim card (sucks), noticed slight change in the quality of the speaker, so the conversation sounds robotic. also the ringer broke only after 6 months.

I suggest getting a nokia instead, you will be happier in the long run.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

bigesh submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A680 / VM-A680:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I love this phone. So much, that I decided I'd become one of those consumers who posts a report on the internet.

It's small, sleek design fits easily in your pocket. The screen is bright and colorful (although a little difficult to read in bright sunlight). I've never had reception problems, even in remote areas.

This is my first camera phone - I was a little skeptical about buying one at first, because I figured I've never really need or use it...that's what my digi-cam is for. But since I've had it, I've snapped all kinds of fun pictures that are cool to put as your screen saver or as a caller's ID on the outside LCD.

The external LCD is great...it keeps the time when idle, and tells who's calling with Caller ID (again, with ID picture...very cool).

It even comes with tolerable ring-tones, which is sometimes hard to find. Buy this phone!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Now the phone does not ring. From what I read about in other reviews, there is a bug in the phone, but Sprint will not take ownership of gettting it fixed. So, now I am stuck with a phone tat does not ring - only vibrates. I would recommend NOT buying this phone for this reason alone. Additionally, Sprint needs to take ownership of their product line and announce recalls when customers find a common problem that impairs use of a phone. What good is a phone that doesn't ring?

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

airbats801 submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A680 / VM-A680:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I've had this phone for almost a year now. I love the way it looks, and its small size. The features at the time were pretty nice also. Double color screens, and being able to have a background on the outside screen was nice, as was having a movie for a screensaver.

This phone is a pcket phone, and it sits nicely in my pockets, and that was ht emost important thing. The phone held up excellent for most of ths year, until this last month where my ringer slowly stopped working. and eventually only the vibrator would work. I figure this has something to do witht he phone getting to hot and the slder for the ringer speaker melting. Sprint is replacing my phone as we speak. I opted to just get another 1680 instead of the sanyo 8300 they wanted to give me. Reason being the size, and other than the ringer, I had no complaints about the phone.

The call quality has been good. This is my first cell phone, but I am always driving or on the move somewhere, and have had very few dropped calls.

The phone has never automatically turned off while in use, but does get a bit hot if you talk for extended periods of time.

The only other quirk about the phone would be the voice dial, which I love. Sometimes it will not dial the number, but bring up the phone book details of that number.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I got this phone through Qwest and it is just amazing! It has GREAT resolution for both camera and camcorder. It even has a bright flash and movie light! (It is amazing how one small light can give off so much!) Nice small, compact, sleek design. Although some people don't like how the keyboard gets warm while the lights are on, I think of it as a hand warmer! :-D Even though Qwest doesn't have the greatest network I still get AWESOME reception and people hear me real clear! If you are able to get your hands on one of these I absolutely recommend this!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The Company makes top quality products all around. This is no exception. Overall the phone is very nice. It takes great pictures. It gets good reception. It is small and very stylish.
it has a cute animated menu with bugs and birds and other animals.
However:

Cons:
If you are looking for a high resolution camera phone this is not for you.
It has a 65,000 resolution screen. You will see all the little pixles on the screen.
I recommend the toshiba 4050 or the sanyo 5600 for high resolution pictures and applications.
This phone has no speaker phone option.
The phone is not a multimedia phone, therefore you won't be able to watch mobi TV or download AAC Ringers or screen savers.
It is a little out of date.

Very nice phone but not for tech heads like me.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

EscalationQueen submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A680 / VM-A680:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I absolutely love this phone! It's small enough that you can put it in you pocket and forget about where it is, but opens up to be a great size. The external call display is great because it's large and in COLOUR! I love the way that I can customize what goes on the screen, but you can only put pics that you've taken on it not ones that you've downloaded. It has a TON of space. I have 75 pictures on mine and I still have room for more.

There's a couple of things that I don't like about it though. Mostly the fact that to reset your timers for your air time, you have to reset the whole phone which also resets your ringers and things. So it's either fix all your settings to how you like them every month or come up with another way of keeping track of you minutes.

I also had a problem with mine freezing. Especially when I tried to do a contraction in a text message (can't, don't, it's, etc) but warranty exchange fixed that in a hurry. Another thing that bothers me is the fact that when you get a text message it automatically scrolls to the bottom of the message. If your not a fast reader this can get pretty annoying, pretty fast. I used to be able to adjust that on the A500 but not on this one.

This really is a great phone though. I've recommended it to many of my friends.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Here's Why:

- It dosen't ring anymore, it only vibrates
-IT FREEZES!!! WTF is that!!!
-IT shuts off by itself.
-It drops calls by itself.
-It gets flamin hot when you take it off the charger.
-Its turns off when you use the internet for a certain period of time.
-The camera is not very clear.
-THe Video is a piece of crap.
-Barely Any memory on the darn thing!!

So if you're planning on getting one of these, think again. You're wasting your time and money. I'm so glad its been discontinued.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

It's way better than my previous phone, Sanyo 8100.

PROS:
-great picture quality
-great videos
-nice & small
-BLUE KEYPAD!
-great ring tones

CONS:
-no speaker phone, but it's loud enough that a speaker phone isn't really needed.
-silver, and the face plate is not interchangeable, but again, not really needed.

If anyone knows exactly why this phone was discontinued by Sprint, please post. I asked the store and they told me it wasn't, so the website must be mistaken, but regardless.

GREAT PHONE!
