babubbie submitted this review of the Samsung SCH-A790 / SCH-A795 / IP-A790:

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

This phone is a solid performer -- as a phone. In the US, it is reliable. In Europe and elsewhere where GSM must be used there are many imperfections that Verizon is still evolving.

I have had this phone for the past two years. When I first had it in Europe, caller ID and Call Waiting did not work. On a recent trip to Europe, it did work -- So Verizon is responding, but to a point.

The phone is extremely limited because you cannot utilize all the functions of the phone very well. It is not easy to transfer contacts to the SIM card. You have to make separate entries. There are many occasions in which the phone just cannot find a network. In Europe it defaults to Vodafone to such a point that if Vodafone coverage is poor, it does not secondary default to the next carrier. Instead it will seek out the bad Vodafone signal. If you want another carrier, you have to manually select the carrier and the phone goes through a warm-boot to get there.

The large, brilliant display is fantastic, except in bright light or sun, where the glare and screen saturation pales the display. You will have no problem lighting up your hotel room late at night...

Verizon customer service is hit or miss. Whatever you do -- call the general phone number via 611 and ask for global services immediately. They are knowldgable and will do everything possible to assist you. Otherwise, if you don't ask for a global services person, you will get a representative that knows very little, will try hard, but can do little to help.

I am waiting for a decent global PDA -- Maybe Verizon will get smart and come out with a PDA Global Phone that is better than the cheezy I830. The I830 uses an old browser in a high tech phone... go figure! It will be a flop like the Treo 600.

C'mon Verizon -- give me what I want!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

GJMOO7 submitted this review of the Samsung SCH-A790 / SCH-A795 / IP-A790:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I got this phone (3)weeks ago. This is the best phone that i ever owned. The sound quality of the calls are very clear.the signal strenght is very good.I traveled to London and Paris and i had no problems at all.The web browser is very fast and the ringers are very loud. The vibrating mode is very strong and easy to feel while in the holster. The only downside of this phone is the external picture caller ID.The pictures are very small and it reminds me of the Motorola razor as far as the front screen is concern.Other than that, there is nothing wrong with this phone at all.It is also very easy to download ringers to this phone.Of course i don't believe in pros and cons for phones. If you desire a phone with bluetooth,
external speaker, walkie talkie etc than of course this phone is not for you.If you just want a simple phone that can be used in yhe USA and abroad, than this is the phone to have. The camera and camcorder take very good pictures as well. The price is a little steep
however this is the 21st.century and we just have to go with the flow.Way to go samsung and sprint with an awesome phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Ericak submitted this review of the Samsung SCH-A790 / SCH-A795 / IP-A790:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I'm a dealer for sprint and I've had this phone for about a month now; I've been to Spain and Paris and its just works great.

The smartest thing to do is get it about a day or two before you leave abroad and you have like 14 days to try it out.

The size of the phone does kind of get in the way of the new small cute phones but who cares it's a CDMA-GSM phone! Features and all are great... I upgraded from a Sanyo 5500 and I thought I'd never use Samsung but all in all it's the perfect phone in and out the United States... battery life is great, pictures are great.

Well I hope my review helps, and about the blue tooth "relax" just buy the adapter and you'll be fine. Thanks E

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

ssaifull submitted this review of the Samsung SCH-A790 / SCH-A795 / IP-A790:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

What a great surprise this phone has been! First things first: this phone is the sleekest, most attractive phone in Sprint's entire lineup. There is no other phone like it, and it comes the closest to earning that "luxury" phone moniker. The sleek black metal casing, the black 'lacquer' front, the matte finish on the battery.

The hinge is sturdy, smooth and unobtrusive.

The keypad was a concern for me and many on this site have talked down on it without ever having tried it. It is actually very responsive and never cumbersome.

What is much more critical is the ability to force the phone into Digital Roam. I roam digitally many times while at work and other places here in Mid Michigan and wherever else work takes me. Now, if I have a weak Sprint signal, I can just switch to Digital Roam and usually the Verizon signal in those areas is quite strong (which on a side note, leads me to believe that Verizon does actually have the best network, atleast in Michigan, Indiana and Illinois).

RF performance in general is pretty good, pretty much on par with my 5600. As was mentioned before, this phone's signal strength meter has 6 bars (like the majority of Samsung's GSM phones) and sometimes I guess that could be deceptive when trying to compare with Sanyo's. 250 minutes of talk time logged on the phone in the first 6 days and no dropped calls.

Earpiece... the earpiece is trademark Samsung--slightly tinny for my ear, and doesn't come near the superb quality of the 5600's. I guess those countless threads about Sanyo earpieces finally reached Japan but should've rubbed off on Samsung to make them raise the bar. It's fine though, overall.

Oversized external display is nice, internal display though not QVGA is bright and very sharp.

Battery life is quoted at up to 3 hours talk time, I use vision, send text, take pictures and talk about 30-45 min. per day and the battery holds up well and I just let it charge overnight.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

mike78nycc submitted this review of the Samsung SCH-A790 / SCH-A795 / IP-A790:

Overall rating: 2 (out of 5)

I've had this phone about a week but planning on returning it since it does not perform well as a phone ( 262 k screen, and 1mp camera are not worth of buying this phone).

PROS:
-Easy to use menu (as on all Samsung phones)
-Triband phone

CONS:
-as previous reviews noted -missed calls on CDMA
-Poor audio quality (especially on CDMA)
-Hardly enough decent battery life

Conclusion: one more time I have learned the lesson: never ever again will I buy a CDMA phone (unless I live in Japan or Korea where CDMA network is excellent comparing to Sprint and Verizon's CDMA).

What many people do not know is that it is only with CDMA network in the United States the audio quality and the dropped calls can depend on what model of Samsung phone you use. I know technology very well ( but if you do your own search on the net GSM vs CDMA you will see that I'm not advertising GSM. It's just a plain fact that in the USA GSM is the network to go with). When you use T-Mobile or Cingular , it doesn't matter what Samsung model you have ( you will never have volume polution or dropped calls like on CDMA).

I did a mistake again. I though that CDMA has improved since the last time I used verizon and Sprint ( 3 years ago), but it did not. I had the best models of Samsung phone with Sprint and Verizon . No matter how many times they will exchange your phone for a new one , if you got unmatched model for CDMA -You are in big trouble. When you call Sprint or Verizon customer care, of course they will never acknowledge that it is CDMA causes volume polution (especialy in the evenings when network is loaded with clients) and dropped calls.

One opyimistic NOTE for Verizon and Sprint clients: The only phone that works perfectly with American CDMA IS the Nokia phone ( they only have one or 2 models for CDMA).
I don't know how Nokia did that, but it produces the perfect match phones for CDMA
( normal clear sound, better battery life, and no volume polutions).

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

andy8077 submitted this review of the Samsung SCH-A790 / SCH-A795 / IP-A790:

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

I just bought this phone a month ago and I am only marginally satisfied.

Not a "true" global roamer. I was planning a trip to the UK and then directly to South Korea. According to Verizon, the phone needs special software to be able to be used in South Korea (among other places - see brochure). If the software was installed, the phone would ONLY work in South Korea, not the UK or US (or anywhere else). If it wasn't installed, it would not work in South Korea. Unacceptable answer for the price I paid for it. Plus, to have the software installed, I would have had to travel to my local Verizon dealer who barely knew the phone existed and would have to call Verizon to get directions to install the software. It would have been a hassle. Turns out, I didn't have the software changed and it, in fact, didn't work in South Korea.

Things that suck about it:
-expensive
-no "normal" ring tones ("normal" ringtones are downloadable from X-Ringer on Get It Now at a cost)
-not great battery life (working on quantifying this)
-Verizon customer service barely knows about it so getting assistance takes forever
-no text message folders available for archiving messages by user defined groups

Things that are good about it:
-looks way cool ;)
-seamless & easy conversion from CDMA to GSM mode
-easily navigable menus
-great US and UK service coverage
-zoomable camera and flash work well
-intense hi-res screen and graphics

I'm not going to return it but I wouldn't buy it again.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

If it only came with normal ring tones and customer service it would be a winner.
Good news: CDMA service excellent in Seattle
Good news: GSM works like a charm even in Indonesia.
Bad news: local Verizon customer service has no knowledge of this phone and can not help you if you have problems. My phone's SIM card was not activated at delivery and it took tech support over 30 minutes of long distance (their nickel) to Indonesia to activate it. At least the global phone tech support people were very competent.
In summary - buy this phone - excersize a lot of patience and you will enjoy it.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

simsob23 submitted this review of the Samsung SCH-A790 / SCH-A795 / IP-A790:

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

Once in a while I allow myself to walk in a cellular store, obviously I see the slick A790 and as the oldest child I know, I walk out with the promise to receive the phone within 7 to 10 days. The very next morning is in my hands. After using it for over 45 days now I am kind of pleased with it but surprised. It appears to me that no manufacturer is capable of making one good overall cellular phone. One has this but misses that, the other has that but misses that feature, and so on. For this one these are my comments:

PROs:
Looks good !
Works well (I was lucky to get the latest generation without the incoming calls issues) both in the US as well as abroad,
Very good camera,
Sturdy,
Good graphics,
Plenty of extra stuff available (if you use it),
Fairly easy to get used to.

CONs:
A little heavy,
Very low ringer volume,
HORRIBLE choice of ring tones (good for teenagers, NOT for business),
Battery life not so generous,
Limited availability of accessories,
No bluetooth or IR,
Easy to scratch,
Holster kind of lousy,

So, I guess that the relentless search for the perfect phone continues. This is a good one, add bluetooth & IR and allow some normal ring tones and I think it is a very good phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

So far, I've used this phone in Brazil with no real service problems...but the one thing that drives me crazy about this thing is the fact that it does not have standard ring tones!

Even in the "outdoor" mode, I can barely hear them and have missed several calls because of this. And the tones that are provided are, frankly, pretty dopey sounding.

I haven't been able to find standard ring tones on Get It Now, either.

If I can't get this corrected, I am taking this back for a refund and going back to Verizon in the US and T-Mobile everywhere else.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

eval submitted this review of the Samsung SCH-A790 / SCH-A795 / IP-A790:

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

For the last couple of years I've kept a verizon phone for domestic and a tmobile for abroad. The tmobile service is unacceptable in california where I live, but excellent abroad. When Verizon 790 came out with a dual use phone, I jumped at the chance to dump my tmobile. I ended up returning the 790 though. My experience:

Pros:
-Incredible screen- clarity, graphics, visibility in sunlight, all first rate.
-Liked the software and key-pad layout.
-Sturdy build quality.

Cons:
-A deal breaker for me: only one headset option. You have to use the one that comes with the phone, and its an ear-bud. Besides it not fitting my ear, you have to hold the microphone wire close to your mouth for good clarity. No other options, including adapters, are available. It says its a 2.5 jack on the specs, but as the manual will tell you, only the ear-bud included with the phone will work. If you prefer headset use like I do, this phone is not for you.

Other cons:
-Big and heavy.
-A lot of software freezes.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Kekoa submitted this review of the Samsung SCH-A790 / SCH-A795 / IP-A790:

Overall rating: 2 (out of 5)

Samsung created this particular model for Verizon that would suit GSM and CDMA. A majority of the features lean towards CDMA. Even though it has a camera, it won't support GSM and that is a problem if you are abroad as it won't work.

The phone is locked. You cannot slip another SIM card of a different carrier. If you've owned an unlocked GSM phone before and have switched SIM card while in another country; you already know the savings. The A790 is locked into Verizon and when you use it abroad you will be paying the minutes thru the nose. It is very expensive.

This phone is bulky and less battery time. On my recent travel to Asia, I couldn't use more then half of it's features. Luckily, I still had my unlocked Nokia 6200 and just popped in a SIM card and was ready to go.

If you are still thinking of getting this phone, you might want to wait until Samsung fixes all the glitches in this model. Hopefully they can come out with a better phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

bcbrewster submitted this review of the Samsung SCH-A790 / SCH-A795 / IP-A790:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I've very successfully used this phone in Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Poland, in rural and urban areas. There was a seamless handoff crossing borders. Inbound and outbound calls in GSM, although $1.29 per minute, were very clear and easy to make. Same for CDMA.

The design is somewhat awkward to hold or stick in a pocket. There are other minor detractions mentioned elsewhere here. If you travel abroad regularly and desire seamless accessibility, the benefits outweigh the detractions.

There's no reason to own this phone unless you travel overseas regularly and feel the need to be easily accessible at a single, consistent number. Renting a separate GSM phone is an option, but you have a different number. Another option is a US GSM provider, but CDMA is a clearly superior option in the US.

WARNING: There are apparently some seriously defective models of this phone out there. I received one and went through great difficulty getting a replacement, all along receiving denials of defects from several Samsung and Verizon reps. Elsewhere on this forum is a post from another person with an identical experience to mine, where in CDMA mode the phone was seriously dysfunctional, sending and receiving only about 50% of calls. (See post of "herkdrvr" on August 9, 2004.) My replacement model seems flawless.

Customer service for these phones is quite problematic. Verizon presently sells the phone to regular customers only through local stores, but apparently provided no training to local reps. I spent a total of over 8 hours getting the first (defective) phone to work and getting it exchanged, with much of the time on the phone myself (with both Verizon and Samsung) or watching local reps on the phone with national reps, just as frustrated as I. Calling Verizon for support you must advise that you want to speak with the global phone support people or you get no valuable information. Some don't even know there is a global phone support group.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

paigeroo submitted this review of the Samsung SCH-A790 / SCH-A795 / IP-A790:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I am very pleased with this phone. It has everything you'd expect from a top of the line cell. The most positive thing I can say about it, is the enhanced voice kit that allows you to both speak the digits of the phone number you're trying to call, OR, actually program the persons name to be connected with their phone number. Also, it's not as big as people say it is. It's pretty thin, but not all that light. The only complaint I have is the lack of speakerphone and bluetooth features.

A word to the wise: You need a Corporate Tax ID to be able to activate the A790 and the regular Verizon customer support is horrendous. You need to dial Verizon's business channel, directly, if you want help from those that would know anything at all about this phone. It's a little known number that harldy anyone knows about, and that Verizon tries very hard to hide. So I'm going to give it to you: 1-866-837-0022. Otherwise, forget about it. You'll be transferred around until doomsday.

Good luck, I'm very happy, get it if you can.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

It had to go back, just wasn't cutting it as a mobile phone. Overall very disappointed with Samsung and this model (I haven't used a Samsung before.

Pros:

World phone. You can finally carry one instead of two phones. Worked well in Hong Kong.

Camera was decent.

Picture ID.

Cons:

Over 50% of incoming CDMA calls wouldn't go through. Used it in many areas I used my old phone (and since my new phone) where all calls have gone through. Neither VZW nor Samsung could explain. Signal strength near its highest reading.

Most features on the CDMA side not available on the GSM side. Weird.

No 24hr clock.

Ringtones - great if you like dance music but for business, or really any other time, crummy.

Volume of ringtones very low.

Picture messages only seemed to work < 50% of the time. Could have been the network but VZW tried to help and couldn't explain.

Way way way overpriced. Okay if your company is buying I guess.

I was told by more than one listener that my end was choppy and they missed many calls.

Overall not worth the price nor the benefit of carrying one phone. I can't believe VZW really tested this model of if they did, it wasn't with the road warrier in mind.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Finally the phone that I was looking forward to has arrived!

For:

* Great camera. pictures are one of the best that I have seen in recent times, better than the recent 6000VX that I was using!

* Voice quality is good.. no complaints there.

* The voice kit is a good feature. Always liked to call a number by uttering the name, than pressing all those keys.

* Can use one phone across the world, which is awesome for a CDMA phone.

* Good graphics and user experience.

Against:

* Bulky.
* The design is wierd, takes sometime to get used to, especially the keyboards.
* GSM doesn't have many of the features, like brew, web, mms and my fav, voice kit.

Overall, its a great phone for the international customer. But if you are not in a hurry, I'm sure you can wait for more such great products from Samsung, which hopefully will be getting a product out with similar feature set in both GSM and CDMA.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I'll get used to that I guess.

I too had to be on the line with Verizon for about an hour to get it set up to work properly. Then, after voicemail arrived, I couldn't access the mailbox and Verizon had to delete the messages to reset the mailbox. It is all working now, after much frustration. I hope it works in Asia....

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
