I signed onto this phone after having the Kyocera Phantom for nearly 3 years before that, the battery started crapping out on me with the kyocera and it was time for an upgade. <br /><br />This phone lasted me just 8 months. The phone hardly got service because of the antennae going bad, the backlight did never go out set for 7 secs but i could see it lit up when it was closed through the crack on the phone like u can see the buttons. It was like it never thought it was closed or something. So insurance came through and gave me a new phone.<br /><br />2. This phone was dropped around so much that the hinge broke and the phone had to pressed and held to get it to work. Verizon again replaced because I had insurance.<br /><br />3. This phone lasted a good time until it was gotten wet. Never broke.<br />Signal: Worked serviceably in the hills of Pleasant Hill CA, then worked perfectly - suspect Verizon built a new tower nearby. Extensible antenna seems to help if signal is weak.<br />Battery: Have had for 3y and charge every 1-2 days. Kept on all the time. A brand new LG225 runs out faster.<br /><br />Con:<br />Voice dialing: Very useful feature, but the phone has a hard time understanding me, especially via a headset or when there is ambient noise, such as on a train. Also, the logic of the voice mailing system is obtuse - if you utter a peep after your desired target is identified, the phone asks, "Do you want to call?" and for just about any response ("Yes", "No", "&amp;%^$^%$$#"), the next thing it does is start over with "Please say the name." The VX300 was perfectly fine, but the get it now feature that Verizon offers was tempting. I gave the SCH-A650 a chance for a week, and it just did not meet my expectations.<br /><br />PROS:<br />-Nice, sleek design.<br />-Small and lightweight<br />-Bright LCD<br />-Has essential features of a basic phone<br />-Has the get it now feature<br />-The stock ringtones aren't too bad<br />-The backgrounds/screensOther... are cute<br />-There are vibrate AND silent modes<br /><br />CONS:<br />-No speakerphone<br />-Difficult to open with one hand<br />-Scratches easily (already has 3 new scratches after a week of being pocketed and placed on a desk)<br />-Your Contacts are listed with their number on the left (ex: "[001]Mom"), and it is annoying/pointless<br />-The keys are poorly lit with an ugly greenish-yellow color<br />-There aren't many ringtones or backgrounds<br />-When text messaging, you have to re-enter the person's phone number every time you text them, unless you scroll to an old message and hit "reply." <br />-There is no option to message them in the "Contacts" section, which I got very used to.<br />-The keys are not touchy enough. As in, it takes more effort than it should to push the buttons. This causes a lot of wrong phone-calls and messed up text messages.<br /><br />Overall, this phone is okay, but is more of a hassle than anything else. Someone who has never had a cell phone before could like it, but I personally found it hard to manage and deal with.<br /><br />If this phone is too basic for you, try the LG VX6100. If that still is, try the LG VX8300. LG is very user-friendly and easy to navigate.<br />If this phone is very close to what you want, I highly recommend the LG VX3300. Read reviews about it. This phone doesn't have very many ring tones or features, but I don't use those anyway.<br /><br />The biggest gripe I have with the phone is that now that I have had it for a year, some orange pixels started showing on the display. They are spreading like bacteria in a petri dish, and now I've got a spot about as big around as a pen cap. Its going to continue to spread until the phone is unusable. Sure it looks funky now, like i took sandpaper to it or something, but when I want to talk to somebody in Cali, or even my fiance in El Barrio, it will make the call, and clearly. I have the same usability complaints that the others mentioned so I will not duplicate the messages. We had one phone "fail to boot" after about 3 months, so Verizon quickly replaced it at no charge.<br />Then the replacement failed suddenly, just went completely dead. Now I am worried about heat, as these phones get very hot.<br /><br />Final word: Two out of three phones will fail inside 6 months! The phone performs well. The signal is Samsung good. By this, I mean that it does the job but could be better. I travel to many parts of Texas and this phone meets expectations in all places I visit with the exception of this one spot in Brownsville, Tx. I guess that this may be related to the networks unwillingness to fix the problem. I have had many phones with different carriers and this is the same problem with all. I must point out however that Sanyo phones experience less dropped calls. Aside from this issue, the phone is as solid as all Samsung phones I have owned. I has all of the basic features, and can take abuse. I don't understand why other reviewers have mentioned this phone as difficult to open with one hand. I am right hand dominant with large hands and fat fingers and I can open this phone with ease using both hands. The biggest CON I have with this phone is no speaker phone. There are some minor issues with keeping the settings I change on the phone. For whatever reason, I cant get the phone to keep certain ringers for certain contacts. That is no big however. Keep up the good work, Samsung, and improve your signal. DO NOT get this phone if you want a very entertaining phone to show off to all your friends. This phone doesnt have camera, speaker, instant messaging, or preloaded games. This is the phone for you if you just text and talk and maybe buy a game or two. You get what you pay for and it gets the job done, but I long for my a670 and I wish that I could switch phones with my mom because she has the a670 too-we originally had a share plan. I loved the a670. Or I want a T Mobile or Cingular samsung. Those phones are awesome-even the cheaper ones I want like the X475 and the X427 but now its discontinued-or for camera phones the e315, 16 or 17 or the E335. all those samsung phones are great. They come with games, they don't have the plain, standard boring ringtones like the Verizon samsungs do, and they have a lot more options-you can change the color of the light, and the sound of the keys, and power on sounds etc and are lighter and a little smaller. This phone is small though but very basic, and very few options especially compared to those phones. If you want to get your teen a basic phone from Verizon, this one is very basic but does its job well. Now they raised the price though to sixty dollars-I got mine for thirty with a new contract and for that price I would recommend spending the extra money and getting the a670. or even the an lg camera phone but dont get the audiovox 8910 that one isnt so nice-my bro has it.
