narn3049 submitted this review of the Motorola E398:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

Next after the lg pear 300, and the motorola v551, I had the ROKR lookalike, that was essantely the same as the E1 Rokr, without iTunes, and surely this phone was durable. I've thrown it at everything it handled my breakups with the ex girlfriends. lol. and it was covered in scratches, etc. It still worked and was a great phone, however ne2 upgrade came and I had to get a new phone, and I was sad this one left.

SADDD!

Saddd!!!!!

sadd!!!

So I sold it on eBay for 20 bucks, and I was happy, but I will miss that phone. It was cool

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

70ss454_man submitted this review of the Motorola E398:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

This is a great, and very durable phone. When i bought it 3 years ago, i was used to Motoralas being very cheap feeling and very flimsy. When i received this phone i was simply amazed. The rubberized finish WAS superb, till now when its wearing off badly.
Pros:
-great sound system with vibration and 3D
-cool menu sounds and such
-flash
-un-motorola like vibrate. very strong and customizable
-side lights
-very good signal, rarely ever lost service
-rubber finish, making it easy to grip even when wet
-transflash card ready

Cons:
-horrible, HORRIBLE UI. Oh my god. so slow, especially when texting. Worst in any phone I've ever seen, esp. now days.
-because it was unlocked, it wouldnt work with any media offered from T-mobile.
-rubber peals off =/
-it would reset every once in a while
-battery wouldnt last more than a day

Now, to explain why I don't have this phone anymore.
It was dead as usual, so i plugged it in to charge. 15 min later smelled something burning. Ran to my room to find it almost on fire and melting all over.
Motorola of course sent me another phone, this one a RIZR (amazing phone, look for my review)

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Got it on a dare and did get a new phone, but came right back to this one.

Only con: It tends to black out and shut off completely. I would just credit that one issue to how long I've had it though.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I love the material of the phone, if you drop it it won't chip. It's very solid and doesn't feel like it'll break after one drop or even when your just holding it firmly. I've had full bars for Cingular and never below full on signal. You can put in a lot of MP3's as long as you buy an expandable MicroSD card. Overall this phone is the best! I've kept this phone for the longest time now...you can't pass this phone up if you're a collector. It's better than a ROKR E1.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

My (unlocked) e398 makes this unique 'clickety-klock' hang-up sound...I believe it's an embeded sound file, yet I sure would love to get my hands on it so I can turn it into a cool ringtone! It's slightly reminiscent to the old Star Trek communicator sound, yet different! If anyone has any info on what this is, please contact Me. Thanks!

rouqil submitted this review of the Motorola E398:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Where do I start. Ok, I am an avid user of cell-phones and have used pretty much phones from every manufacturer on the market. Nokia, LG, Sony/Ericsson, Motorola, etc. Anyway. I use to not like Motorola as I had issues with the V505 style flip phones but was suggested by a friend to try the candy bar style phone of the e398 or baby Rokr1. So, i went onto ebay and got the phone brand new for about 130 bucks. Let me tell you that this phone offers so many features an is very reliable and dependable and has many other lil quirks.

Features: Bluetooth enabled, awesome camera phone, MP3 player with transflash storage, nice weight and size, awesome clarity through handset and ear-piece, awesome battery life (battery lasted 2 days straight without a charge and constant use. I would say at least 15 to 20 hours talk time for me) and a sleek design. Phone will fit nicely in a purse or in a jacket pocket. Has an awesome alarm which is key to me when i travel. (Motorola use to not include alarms on their previous phones but got smart and do now). So, i give it a 4.5 cos it doesn't allow the download of pic files without access to the internet from your provider like the Nokia phones do and it doesn't have an FM radio like the Nokias (no needed if you save MP3's on the transflash card) but other than that, it's a BOMB phone. I would highly suggest it to anyone looking for a reliable, working, good reception, high signal strength candy bar style phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

But there are a few problems and items on the wish list.

Cons:
Phone volume not very high
no video capture
no multiple lines per name
mp3 loading is pretty slow

otherwise this phone is excellent

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

GlobalWireless submitted this review of the Motorola E398:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Where can I start? The E398 is one of the best phones I have encountered over my past phones. I've had the V600, V80, 7260, and one of my older phones, T720. Out of all of them, this one is the most unique. Here are my PROS:

-Built-in stereo speakers
-Mp3 Format
-Stock 64 MB Sandisk, always upgradeable
-Sleek design
-Awesome sound
-Durable frame, this thing won't budge if you drop it, scratch free except for the screen.
-Strong Reception, I actually have reception at the mall and home
-Pulse Lighting
-If you are a show off.. this is the phone to show off with.
-Camera with Flash Lighting
-Video Player
-All-Round good strong phone.

And here are the very few CONS:
-No Video Capture
-2 Second Delay Menu
-With T-Mobile, you will run into a "_@" message instead of a voice message, but that is fixable using p2kseem editor.

Overall it's a pretty strong and superb phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Battery life is so good and the menu and functions are good and easy. Looks and feels great. it is a solid phone, ScanDisk Slot MP3 DinamicLight, rubber case, expansion slot for upgrading memory(not limited like k700), very good screen size and resolution, fast system&game software.

Cons: installation CD is only for PC, so for people with MAC like myself kind of stuck....but Bluetooth works fine, FM radio only thru earphone headset, No vibration & ring together.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

balance submitted this review of the Motorola E398:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

- You can have a Fm stereo headest and listened to radio on E398 and Fm radio is not standard on other brands' all models but only in some models of those other brands and those phones are sold for $100-$150 more than E398.

-Most of my uploaded mp3s are more than 5MB and i use 128MB t-flash.

-Videos, again you can upgrade your firmware to 97R and use video rec.

- My E398 takes 2 seconds to startup and 1 second to go off plus 1 second to go to menu.

-Games, I have nice java games on my E398 and very good response time.

-Which any other brand has Stereo speakers?

-Battery life is one of the best.

-Screen quality is best (It's made by Sharp).

-It has an expansion slot, possible to upgrade memory.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

barstow submitted this review of the Motorola E398:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

Junk.

FM radio - wow, none here, almost standard on other brands.

MP3 - For some reason, I can't even upload 3mb MP3 files. Looks like I'm going to have to convert my collection to 64kbps or less.

Voice notes - amazing, since it records voice dialling, no additional software/hardware needed, but not available.

Video - you can play, but not record - amazing.

Keypad lock - 10 years ago, the 2 keypress lock idea was cutting edge. Others have implemented simple auto locks since then. Moto hasn't caught that particular train yet.

Clunky keys - soft/hard, weird key response. Joystick key one of the worst I've experienced.

Slow startup - Takes 10 seconds push on the power key to realise you want dearly to power on your phone, then you will wait another 20-30 seconds for the "funky" initialisation screens & slow network search to complete.

Games - I've played great, responsive Java games on a wide array of phones. This phone is way behind in the execution of Java apps. Poor response time, makes games anywhere between frustrating to play to downright a waste of time uploading anything to it.

Vibration alert - wow, this is generally a feature that was out in even entry level phones 6 years ago, but Moto has decided that you will want either, or - not both ring & vibrate at the same time. If you rely on the bass notes of the speaker to alert you in noisy envioronments, you will miss calls.

Dodgy software - when scrolling through menus, you hear at random, clicking/thumping from the speaker.

Keep in mind, I've only been using this particular materpiece for 4 days (and yes, I have read the manual very carefully). I have a Nokia 8310 that this phone was to replace, and guess what? Although I'll be paying for it for 2 years, this phone is going on ebay (of course at a substantial loss to me) to get the useless thing out of my sight. In terms of pure functionality & ease of use, my 8310 runs rings around this product that came out 3 years later.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Levent submitted this review of the Motorola E398:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

Pros: Port for stereo-headset is located on the top edge, is located on the bottom side of the phone, although you can connect the headset there as well. But in that case the construction will turn out being rather big, and this is not a good thing at all. The typical example of wrong solution is Nokia 6230, the phones size with connected headset increases by almost one centimeter, this cannot be called optimal. The reception of E398 is best among almost all. Talk time is much better than 6230 again, has a better and bigger screen size, resolution better than 6230. Additionally, It's not as slow as Sony Ericsson K700i and has an expansion slot. Plus stereo 3D speakers.
Cons: K700i and 6230 have built-in radios, E398 doesn't. Again K700i has a bigger memory but it's not expandable while E398 is expandable.
I've been a Nokia user since 1997. This is my first non-nokia phone. Of course expectations from a phone are very important. To tell you the truth, if you want a good phone with a GOOD camera, buy a digicam. That simple. Want a really good radio? buy a good mp3 player with radio, and use your phone as a PHONE with some cute futures cuz it'll never be as good as a digicam or an ipod for instance. To me, the most important thing in a phone is the screen display and resolution, that's why i'm hoping and waiting to see the cell phones with OLED screen. Not talking about the ones that are on the market now with SECOND or external displays OLED, but bar phones. Anyways, 6230 and E398 were same price as of today (12-24-04) on ebay, and I chose E398. I'm happy. :)

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

chylld submitted this review of the Motorola E398:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

What can i say, it's a great phone :) I spent a full 2 weeks researching thoroughly as to which phone I should get, and after contemplating this phone and the k700i I decided on this one. it definitely has a more masculine feel about it than the silvery shiny livery of the SE.

PROS:
- very high quality feel
- camera quality is better than i expected
- does everything a phone should

CONS:
- very laggy UI; i consider myself a really fast sms typer, however the iTap thing manages to compensate for the lag. smiley faces and *expressions* of all sorts are remembered very well and make for very fun texting :) sorry this con turned into a pro
- phonebook: i only just figured out how to show only one entry per contact: by telling it to display only primary contacts. then you can press left-right to cycle through the fields. however, because of the way it stores entries in the phone book (one entry per field) the last time i tried to synchronize it with my pc it corrupted half the database!! thankfully i had the whole db on my pda as well, if i hadn't then i would have lost a lot of information.

I've only had this phone for a week and already i love it! now if that bird outside will just stay still where it is so i can take a picture of it and set it as my wallpaper...

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

weakerthans4 submitted this review of the Motorola E398:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I've had several phones since my initial service date a few years ago. The E398 by far has been the best.

Pros:
- Very good reception
- Exceptional camera quality, plus it has a flash which doubles as a flashlight.
- Speaker phone is the usual high quality that I've come to expect from Motorola.
- The refresh rate on the screen is phenomenal, which is essential for the phone to play video as well as it does. (not video capture)
- Bluetooth, always a big plus. It's especially handy in doing file transfers between phones.
- Trans-flash card, gives the user the ability to cram in all sorts of extra media, a big plus in my book.
- MP3 player and FM radio, Motorola delivers a very good, well rounded, sound package with this phone. MP3's sound crisp and clear whether played over the phone's built in stereo speakers or on Motorola's stereo headphones. (Sound quality will be affected by what bit-rate the MP3's are recorded at).
- Built in stereo speakers. For a phone the speakers sound very good and render sound well. The added feature of haptics to use the vibrate function as simulated Bass is very creative as well.

Cons:

- No video capture, if you are looking take video with this phone, forget about it, though you can transfer and play large video files to the phone because of the trans-flash card.

Now I know I have listed only one Con which may make it appear as though I'm glorifying Motorola, but I haven't had anything which makes me need to list more problems. Please try to keep in mind that this review is based on my personal needs for a phone, which this phone easily meets. I hope this review has been helpful to any who are looking to purchase this model.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
