narn3049 submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8100:

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

The first phone I got it in 2003, and it was cool, I beat the jamdat bowling, and of course HAD to download it and pac-man, instead of lame demo.

I remember dropping the phone from the steps (concrete outside) dropping it when going downstairs, even getting pepsi spilled on it and the phone was still a survivor with good battery life. The second phone, I didn't really experience that at all, my uncle mailed it to me for the collection and it was broken, so I can't say much about this phone.

it is a compact phone and still had a camera but sadly just VGA. I loved this phone when I had it.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

signoutloud submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8100:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

I just got this phone second-hand off eBay and really loved it from the start. Sturdy design, cute size, etc. Until....my text messaging did not transfer to this new phone. It took a whole week for Qwest to figure out the reason the text wasn't working...the Sanyo 8100 is not compatible with 2-way text! Argh! My "grandfathered" unlimited text plan was lost due to the process - but I'm fighting to get it back! Anyway I wish I had looked closer on phone scoop's specs; I wouldn't have purchased the phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

NOLA Lady submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8100:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I think I'm about ready to move on to a new phone, and am considering the Katana DLX. Since the DLX is so new, I've been doing a bit of on-line research. I stumbled across this site and did a side-by-side comparison to my loved and trusty SCP-8100. Feeling nostalgic, I had to give the 8100 a review.

CONS
Admittedly, I'm not too concerned with the camera features or other "gadgets". If I were, I may agree with the other reviewers who mentioned picture clarity. I suppose that's true, but I really don't care; I take my pictures with a digital camera, not my phone. Also, an alarm would have been nice.

PROS
The SCP-8100 has been an awesome phone. I'm particular to Sanyo, and have grown to love the flip-phone, so the 8100 was a natural choice in mid-2003. The 8100's been perfect! This phone has been dropped on concrete and ceramic; she's a bit scratched up, but works great. My toddler son threw the phone in the wishing well at the mall about two years ago- amazingly, no problems (though I don't believe it was ever advertised as water-resistant). The reception has always been awesome, and the battery life has far surpassed my expectations. I use this phone all the time, and never have problems.

This may have more to do with Sprint service in my area (I-10 corridor from Houston, TX to Pensacola, FL) than the 8100 itself, but I have never dropped a call- even while travelling. Ever. I've had this phone for four years now, and have never had to change the battery. It's just that good. I'm upgrading now because my son broke the hinge on one side. Amazingly, the phone still works - but even I realize when a good thing has run its course. Hopefully the Katana DLX will prove as trusty.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

techontrack submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8100:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

This phone displays its high quality manufacturing by delivering a solid set of features along with dependable, clear calls. I enjoy using this phone daily with my busy schedule as I never have to worry about it failing to get me a call. I have worked with many phones through my job (on-call PC support tech), and I cannot find any phone that comes close to the durability of this phone. Sanyo shows that they think through where things go for ease of use, and they also plan out how the menu system works. Each of these decisions makes for quick access for the user to a wealth of options on the phone. Sanyo really puts the time into making their phones, so make sure to check them out at the store, and compare them to Samsung, LG, etc. You won't be let down...

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Spartan 104 submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8100:

Overall rating: 3.5 (out of 5)

When I had service with Sprint, I was a big fan of Sanyo phones. I owned the 5300, this one, the 4900 (the workhorse), and the VM4500. Sanyo phones, IMHO, were the best around. Solid performers (RF perf. & voice quality), good build quality, and were overall just great phones. The 8100 was no exception. Sure it had a craptacular camera (like most phones), small main display, lack of connectivity options (no bluetooth, IR, wi-fi...but most CDMA phones didn't have these features when the 8100 rolled out), but yeah, it worked and worked well. Exceptional RF, great voice quality, loud earpiece, loud ringers, and durability make this phone a winner.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

southwestm81 submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8100:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I've had this phone for several months now and it has been fantastic. I've been using it on the Bell and MTS Mobility networks. It has great reception, very speedy when web browsing, very good battery life, even with a lot of internet use. This is my first Sanyo and I am quite impressed (I've otherwise been a loyal Samsung user...I've also owned Nokia, LG,and Motorola (blech!) phones. Here's the thing about the text messaging business, since some people in their reviews says it works to a "t" and others say it works like crap (ie. having to go on to the internet to send or recieve messages):

The phone CAN do SMS texting (even though in the Specs. right here on Phone scoop says it can't, it actually can). It strictly depends on the service provider.

Sprint, seems to have programmed the phone to do not be able to send SMS and having the user log onto Vision to get anywhere (at least this seems to be the concensus here). The software that Sprint had the loaded onto the phone is provisioned to function in a certain manner. Unfortunately, it appears that it functions in a manner that is negative for the user (but gives Sprint extra $$$). Some SPrint users seem to have fixed the texting problem, but for most it seems like it is still a problem.

In Canada, Bell Mobility carried this phone and there are still plenty in circulation. MTS, a Bell alliance partner also supports the phone. On both Bell and MTS, the SMS works perfectly...as it normally should. So it is strictly a service provider issue.

That asides, while on the larger side (quite the contrast sitting it down next to a Samsung SPH/VM-A680. But it does feel good in the hand and is more compact than the A600 (though the camera is not as good). But what do you expect, the camera is from 2003. But 3 years later and the camera is still decent, in terms of image quality, but not as good as say the A600, A680....two phones for comparison. Ringer volume and ear piece volume beat out the rest. Sanyo deilvers on my first try!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

lovelypoison3 submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8100:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Last year I signed up with Sprint and had the Samsung A560 phone (their new free phone) if you are considering to sign up with Sprint, do NOT get this phone. I've reviewed it on here as well, you can look it up.

That phone is the reason for why I just purchased the Sanyo SCP 8100 phone. I bought it last week on eBay and just received it today.

This phone has EXCELLENT reception. I have yet to have a signal fade, or any complaints what-so-ever of cutting in and out.

The camera works great, I truly love this phone. Great picture, easy to use, and ring tones sound great.

The only thing I do not like about the phone is how the text messaging works. I'm paying for unlimited text messages, and the only way for me to check my messages with this phone or send messages is to get on the internet, which of course charges me. Other than that, the phone is great. But if you do alot of text messaging, and don't really use the internet, this phone isn't for you.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Sanyo phones are not nearly as common place in Canada, as in The USA.
Too Bad. After using most every Brand of phone out there I would have to agree with many others on this site; Sanyo makes one of the Best CDMA phones in the world.

PROS:

-FANTASTIC Reception(A phones most important Attribute)
-Good Battery Life.
-Very Good Vibrate Mode.(not always a Given)
-Solid Build Quality
-Good, First Generation camera.
-Well thought out easy to use menu.

Nothing Negative to say, really. I do have to say that the phone is abit Chubby though. I'am sure Sanyo will address this in the Next Generation model.Thin is in...

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The one thing I don't like is the slow texting. This phone should be pretty cheap by now. Sprint is an alright company except when they tell you that you get free roaming, and see roaming charges on your bill. Now that I work for Verizon I now realize that this was a foolish mistake.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Carterism submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8100:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Pros:
great camera quality! best i've seen out of other sanyos. very compact, fits well in my hand. excellent reception. no dropped calls! sound quality superb!

Cons:
battery life could be better & short memory

If you're not looking for extra features such as multimedia, speakerphone, 1.3 mp, or video get this phone! i was a bit scared to get this phone because i thought the picture quality was going to be a downgrade but turns out it's better than any other sanyo camera phone i've had (VM4500, MM7400). i've gone thru many phones because i can't stand having one more than a couple months but i think this one is a keeper!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

It has terrible reception, every thing is so inconvenient not user friendly at all and The camera sucks. If you have not gotten this phone save your self the aggravation and dont even consider it try something else.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

sycomonkey submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8100:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

By now this phone should be VERY cheap to get, being completely replaced by the 8200. I sell cell phones for a living and I have to say this is one of the finest from it's era. I've dropped it more times than I can recall and it barely has a scratch. The reception is REMARKABLE, you will barely ever have to pull out the antenna. It's very easy to hear, almost too loud, something Sanyo is pretty well known for. The GUI is very easy to learn and responsive.

The main downsides are the camera, which is very poor by today's standards, and the fact that it doesn't support SMS text messaging natively. Also some extra functionality in the calander would have been nice, but that's being pretty pickey.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

kamakine submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8100:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Okay well I've had this phone for 10 days or so and so far I am very pleased with it. I find it's easy to use and great reception. And I think the camera takes awesome quality.

Pros:
-Great Reception
-Easy text messaging
-Good camera
-Loud Ring
-Loud Vibrate (went off in class and people could hear it so the vibrate is loud alone)
-Light weight
-With downloaded pictures the quality is amazing
-when you receive a text message it's REALLY annoying because if you don't answer it (in my case it WON'T stop vibrating until you open it) which is a pain

Cons:
-Sometimes the antenna is a pain to put up because you don't get signal everywhere. Most places though.
-If you turn the volume up too maximum (the ear piece) the person's voice gradually comes distorted.
-The rings aren't the greatest so I had to download one.
-Not the phones fault but bell has really high prices for downloading
phone book is easy to use.

To sum it all up it's an awesome phone, just a few flaws. Easy to use, and I'd recommend it to anyone who is looking to buy it.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

rudy808 submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8100:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

After reading all the bad reviews of this phone, i was reluctant to to upgrade my old phone to this SCP8100 Sanyo but since it was given to me by a family member (hand-me-down) and was newer than my old one, i figured i would give it a shot. In short, I am very satisfied with this phone. Yes, it has no alarm, yes it has no speakerphone, and yes it's a little bulkier than all the thin newer phones but for %95 of the moderately technical semi-gadgety nation it would be a great phone. The camera seems to work better than I anticipated and I breathed a sigh of relief after a few days of using it. I love the crisp sound of the polyphonic ringtones and the screens color and resolution is way better than I expected. And by the way, for anyone out there who is shaking their head thinking i'm a non-technical phone savvy guy.....I am a tech support technician for the biggest wireless provider in the nation so I do understand technical notations and language so don't think I'm some dumb sap who doesn't know phones. Ok, that's out of the way. Anyways, this phone is good. Borderline great. It is user friendly and looks like a "newer" model phone that you won't be embarassed to pull out and answer in front of people. I had that problem with my old one. Looked like a garage door opener. It has a workable camera with alright resolution, but that's okay. If i want great pictures....I'll buy a camera. Remember, this is a phone. It makes calls, it recieves calls, it has voicemail, it rings, it vibrates, it has web capabilities and it's a flip phone. So if you have an older model phone than this scp8100 I wholly suggest this phone. Sure there are plenty of better phones than this one but some of us live on a fixed income and can't afford $500 for the newest fad phone coming out. If this is you also, the SPC8100 will work fine for you. God bless.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

monkeyracer submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-8100:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I have had this phone since the day it was released basically. I love it generally. I've had the Sanyo 4900, the Kyocera 2G Smart Phone 6035, and now this. Having the VCR sized mammoth of a device Kyocera made me appreciate the 4900's smaller more standard size. then going to the flip phone 8100 made me appreciate the ability to pocket a phone. The 8100 has a camera and at the time of release this phone was one bad ass device. Soon after, the VGA1000 (A620) came out, and added flash to the equation, then more and more better phones started coming out; smaller, slimmer, more advanced. (which is an indication of technology in general).
Overall, I am very satisfied with the phone, great reception, great features, I even use it as a modem for my laptop.
This phone is very durable, and that remains a sanyo feature. I have dropped it many times, and barely any scratches are the remaining proof. My 4900 survived a 5 sec. microwave test (do not try this at home, was done under proper technical supervision, and not recommended to be repeated) and still made and received calls perfectly.
I would liked to have seen more customization on it though, the optional Navy/Champagne, and feminine White/Purple colors were disappointing.
I am going to use Sprint's Upgrade program to go to a blue tooth enabled LG-325, sad to leave a flip phone, but can't wait for the BT feature to make its way back into Sprint's line up.

Pro's-
Great camera for time of release
Smallest Camera Flip phone at release
Great reception
Very Durable brand
Very strong hinge, easy open
My ringers sound great
Makes and receives clear calls all the time

Con's-
Lack of customization
Bulky in terms of todays phones
outdated VGA camera
No SMS, short mail sucks
No flash or Zoom
No speaker phone

It's old, and will be replaced, but not without being missed.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
