barry.hansen submitted this review of the Samsung Fascinate / Mesmerize (Galaxy S):

Overall rating: 0 (out of 5)

Got this phone based on some very good reviews. I've had Samsung phones in the past, all of them not living up to the hype.

The GPS takes forever to grab satellites, the browser is PAINFULLY slow, anything that needs to pull data virtually locks the phone up, and for that matter, forget data at all if you're out of network. If you get anything at all it is spotty at best. Which brings me to the fact that it gets horrible reception. Every smartphone I've ever used before this puts this thing to shame. It makes me wish I hadn't given up my windows phone for this. I should have taken my wife's BlackBerry. Extremely dissatisfied with Samsung and Android phones in general. Whenever I get a new phone it will not be a Samsung. I would just assume deal with a BlackBerry, which is the most un-userfriendly phone on earth!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

kingstandup submitted this review of the Samsung Fascinate / Mesmerize (Galaxy S):

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

After using the Samsung Galaxy Tab since April, I had high hopes for this phone. Unfortunately, my expectations far surpassed what I actually got from this phone. My love for the tab's performance made me believe this phone was an obvious choice for me, however, I quickly realized that wasn't the case. I only had the phone for a few days before I began having problems with dropped calls. From there, the problem eventually turned into not getting any calls at all followed by text messages not being sent out. I found myself restarting my phone half a dozen times a day. Once those problems began, my screen also stopped responding to touch and when it eventually worked, it was beyond sluggish. I also had some problems with apps opening on their own: I wasn't too pleased when I heard the Angry Birds theme coming from my pocket in the middle of a meeting. I decided to bring the phone back and when they quickly evaluated the it, they believed that the internal antenna was damaged, but couldn't explain the screen problems. The phone was replaced with the identical model, which low and behold, suffered the exact same problems. Samsung is a great brand and I still believe that maybe, just maybe, I got 'the bad one of the bunch' or should I say 'the bad two of the bunch.' I eventually traded the second phone in and was scared away from Androids altogether. On the positive side though, the screen was beautiful: videos looked awesome and music sounded awesome. Too bad this phone didn't work out for me.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

kensmall submitted this review of the Samsung Fascinate / Mesmerize (Galaxy S):

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

Good phone until I ran the 2.2 software upgrade. New voice recognition wants to take you anywhere they can sell you something. Say "Call office" and it don't go to your phone book but rather takes you to a search engine..." VR was passable before not doesn't work most of the time. the old software has some limitations and things i missed from my old windows phone. but it had some improvements. I ran the update and the whole value of the phone turned to crap. Also under 2.2 the push is on to get you to make yourself GPS trackable. it keeps on asking you to turn that on.
A couple of things that they forgot to tell you about this OS is that it demands a gmail account AND some of the software only sees gmail contacts etc. so if you buy this phone to sync with Exchange server or your desktop you always have some unexpected configuration issues. Aftermarket software makes this phone do what your old windows OS system did. So you are suseptable to the whims of whoever writes that too. I think that this was an early adoptors phone. go for the newer version and skip this one.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

blargolis submitted this review of the Samsung Fascinate / Mesmerize (Galaxy S):

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

The Fascinate is a frustrating dud. I bought it because Verizon had a "buy a Fascinate and get any phone free" and my son wanted a DroidX and I the only way he could afford it. Smart kid - the DroidX and Moto software is infinitely superior. So I was stuck keeping it or coughing up $200 to trade to something else.

I tell friends the Fascinate should have been named the "Defecate" or "Epic Fail" as the fascinate is only fascinating as a study on how a manufacturer can take gorgeous hardware and utterly destroy it into as nearly useless mess with software. You shouldn't have to root a phone to overcome lousy software. if not for this, I'd prefer it to iphone (which I also have)

Pros:
Large, lightweight (compared to iphone)
Vibrant Colors even in daylight
Responsive rouchscreen
Swype
Removable battery (necessary to reboot frozen phone)

Middling:
Battery life marginal
Fidgety keyboard (can be upgraded and Swype/voice commands make it livable)
Ample stock flash (loaded with useless crap)

Cons:
Absolutely Useless mail client
Stops ringing or reporting voice mail with no warning (battery removal needed to clear)
Useless, blurry camera is a joke
Poorest implementation of Android features
Loaded with useless Bloatware
Poor widgets compared to Moto or HTC
Marginal sound and sub-par signal - drops calls a LOT compared to DroidX or Iphone.

The camera is especially frustrating - picture looks great when framing but auto focus defocuses the picture into a fuzzy mess when snapping pic or touching to focus. The "flash" washes out the picture. Video however is very good (I rarely need or use) and this almost certainly proves the prob is in Samsung software implementation.

The latest word is while Froyo 2.2 roms have been leaked, this phone is being discontinued and abandoned by Verizon. Samsung is so inept with their software they can't fix the many issues, and the 2.2 update has been canceled. Time for class action lawsuit?

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Compared the phones and found the Fascinate to be lighter, better looking, and easier for the pocket than the Droid X. It's not the iPhone, but for $49 it's MY iPhone!!

The Galaxy screen is awesome. I loaded up with free apps and started playing (after I installed free AVG of course!)

It's great being able to carry around a complete entertainment center / phone with me.

I'm still learning the phone and the only con I have so far is that it doesn't accept too many words for voice to text messaging.

I definitely recommend this phone to anyone wanted the Droid version of the iPhone!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

johntrak submitted this review of the Samsung Fascinate / Mesmerize (Galaxy S):

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

Dumped a smart phone with slow windows 6.5 for this one. So far, it's fast, functions and features work quickly, actions are intuitive. Internet works well and very fast. Calls are seamless. Volume controls work well and apps we downloaded to test also work fine. Still working on flash but will figure it out. Can't believe how many free apps there are. Would love, however, to jail break far enough to delete the bloatware I'll never use. Another subject for another time.

What's cool:
Easy to set up and operate, fast apps, great phone voice quality. You'll be programming it with no problems in seconds. Android is user friendly.

What's not:
Way too much bloatware that can't be deleted......yet. Not to worry, doesn't interfere with use.

Bottom line:
Best ergonomics and ease of use makes this a true winner. Look out iPhone. Oh yeah, and it works with flash, too.
"Should I get it?" Yes, it's a great phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Even my own mother who never owned a smart phone, found my phone so easy to use!!
This phone is amazing and fast! I absolutely love it and the only flaw I see is that the battery doesn't last as long but I expected that!! That is why I didn't give a "5" star rating!!
I highly recommend this phone!! I was up for a upgrade and I was holding out for a Storm 3 and well most of know that RIM gave up and keeps reproducing the same old phones over.

I LOVE the phone and with anything there is a learning curve. I am still finding some cool new things on it.
Not sure what everyones problem is with "BING" or what the story is about 2.2
PROS:
1) Sound is great
2) Battery is great
3) Swype kicks is cool
CONS:
Can not find one.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I'm getting used to it, I've always had a Blackberry so going from that plat form to an Andriod has been chanlanging.

What I like PROS:

-apps are just awsome, better design and fuction.
-touch screen is wonderful, very clear, it does the colors great and you can even see it in direct sun light.
-setting up my emails was easy.
-cuztimazing my home screen took all of 5min.
-currently running v2.1 and I'm excited about the 2.2 upgrade maybe it will fix some of the cons

Cons:

-battery life is not good at all, I might need to invest in a 2nd battery.
-you cant delete any of the pre-installed apps (hoping this issue gets addressed in the 2.2 upgrade)

Thats all so far...

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

He knows I am into gadgets, and I helped him set it up. I had my iPhone next to me when I was doing the set up, and doing a comparison, I'd say this is Verizon's iPhone, however I think that the iPhone is still the best out there for AT&T unless I get a different phone and find out otherwise.

PROS:
The phone has a big screen, and has a swipe text feature, which would be you'd start to type a word, it pops up with the suggestions and you swipe through them.

Social Networking, FB and Twitter are easily used on this phone. Amazing for that. I am just used to the iPhone's FB layout and I'm wondering if the FB layout on this is any different. He doesn't have an FB so I couldn't test.

CONS:
A little big of a phone, def bigger then my Jest and iPhone, but you should get used to the size once using

Battery, goes down fast with touchscreen. Overall 4.5 phone

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I longed for the cool screen and downloadable apps the android phones offered. I had a BB Tour and loved it. What I learned is the Android Phones are cool Toys! If you wanna play on your phone when your waiting at the Doctor's Office this is the ticket. If you wanna use this for business and sync contacts and calender with Microsoft Outlook forget it. The phonebook on this device is the worst ive seen on any phone since the 1990's. If you wanna call john doe you have to search for john. If you search for doe you won't find it. Another thing I didnt enjoy as having to hit several buttons to get to a screen. If you must have this phone do leave the store without atleast 3 extra chargers because this thing drinks batteries. I had to constantly charge mine. If Blackberry & Palm can make software to sync with Microsoft Office why cant Google? I shouldnt have to buy an app to have a normal phonebook. In the meantime Ill keep purchasing RIM stock.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

hucworld submitted this review of the Samsung Fascinate / Mesmerize (Galaxy S):

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I was kind of biased about this phone at first. Having came from the Samsung Epic 4G I just knew that there was not another phone out here that could wow me like that did. Well after finishing the programming that the sales rep didn't do...I love this phone. The speaker quality is awesome and the the bright display that Galaxy S are known for makes this a keeper. The slim feel and design of the phone just lures you in like you wouldn't believe. Even tho the phone is labeled as having a 5mp camera, the camera performs like an eight megapixel. While this phone is missing a LED notification that flashes and it is missing the Samsung Media Hub it is still a powerhouse. Battery life seems to be respectable for the most. I have no real grips about this phone. This phone holds its own in a class against the Droid X, Droid 2, and Droid Incredible.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Overall I am very satisfied with this phone and can't wait to see what they come up with next

Cons: No LED notification light

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Kenzin submitted this review of the Samsung Fascinate / Mesmerize (Galaxy S):

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

The Super AMOLED in this phone is great! Very clear and crisp screen. EXCELLENT sound quality. Samsung really went above and beyond with this device.

Swype is an excellent alternate to simply typing with the virtual keyboard, although, at first takes some getting used to.

The USCC variant (Mesmerize) replaces Bing with YND (Your Navigator Deluxe). YND is by far superior to Bing, and even easier to use.

Battery could be better, however, when you have a 4" Hi-Res Super Amoled...what do you expect!!! Turn off some extra functions you don't want to use to extend the life a little bit.

The only thing I don't like on this device versus HTC Android phones, is the UI. HTC has it down to perfection with Sense.

Pros - POWERFUL hardware
- Beautiful screen
- Sound quality
- Swype is great
- Android...nuff said

Cons - Battery Life

Overall...ridiculous phone. Apple really needs to kick it up if they are ever going to catch up with Android with phones like these out there.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Nicole08 submitted this review of the Samsung Fascinate / Mesmerize (Galaxy S):

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Now I work for Sprint and I have worked for Verizon and I have had different phones in the past, I have also had the chance to experience the 4G network for Sprint ( if only Verizon had it like really!!!) This phone is almost as close as Incredible as possible without the feature of the LED notification ( fixed with the free app from these reviewers) I do love this phone but sometimes it is a pain because sometimes on good days the battery will last until like maybe 6 or 7PM and then on the charger all night. I do a lot of traveling so I do use the Google Maps and not paying the extra 9.99 a month for the VZNav, HOWEVER... the GPS takes about 10 minutes to actually get the route that you want which to me being a traveler is something I don't like very much. So to make this a lot shorter

Pros:
GREAT AMOLLED SCREEN!!!!! I will never go back to anything but an Amolled

Camera is great I cant wait until Samsung comes out with the update for the front screen

Swype is amazing and very responsive there is nothing i can say bad about this because it is the fastest way of texting

and
The quality of the pictures and websites are incredible!

CONS

Battery- needs to last more than it does sometimes traveling to NYC and by 7pm its dead in a conference is no good

Force closes some applications but nothing too bad.

GPS- needs to find the signal faster than it does especially for someone who is always out of the office and traveling to different cites where I have no idea where these places are

Overall great phone. if I didn't have the Negative part of this review this phone would be getting a 5 rating. Just hope that samsung releases their upgrade soon so skype would work better instead of calling I can video chat with my family in Portugal and Italy. If any of you Reviewers have any idea when they are coming out with the upgrade please post!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

droidgeek submitted this review of the Samsung Fascinate / Mesmerize (Galaxy S):

Overall rating: 3.5 (out of 5)

I just finished a 2 month experience with the LG Ally. It was a good Android device. Nice phone but slow and limited in memory. Ringtones were very easy to assign to contacts and the contacts were synced seamlessly with my gmail account.

Then I got the Fascinate. What a screen. Much faster than an Ally. The form factor is the closest thing to an iphone I have seen. But what did Samsung do to the sync? The short story is that the phone has contacts on the phone and contacts in gmail accounts. The two are separate and can be linked but require a separate step to do so. When you get your new phone, you activate a gmail account and your contacts are automatically on the phone. Or are they. It turns out that those contacts from the gmail account are separate from the phone contacts and don't have all the attributes of the phone contacts. You cannot, for example, assign a ringtone to a gmail contact like you can a phone contact. There is no option for ringtones in gmail contacts. The only way to do that is with third party apps. I understood the Bing and Mapping issues when I got the phone. Those issues are easy to circumvent with bookmarks and downloads. The ringtone problem is not so easy, and it is clear that Samsung, or Verizon, or both made contact management more complicated when they created this scheme. I can't figure out what they were thinking.

Pros
Screen
Form factor
Battery life
Speed

Cons
Bing
Bloatware
Contact management

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

My first one had reception issues and also wouldn't download the software update. Took it to the verizon store they swapped it out no more problems. Phone its great. The super amoled screen its what sets it apart. Also swype is a cool feature, typing with it now. The battery beats all the other droid phones on the market for verizon. If you are in the market for a new android phone then this us your best bet!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
