5tr0uble5 submitted this review of the HTC Hero (CDMA):

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

As a mid to low level android phone, the Hero(CDMA) is outstanding. It has threaded messaging due in part to the android OS, it's sleek looking (for its time)(which was in all fairness about 1-1/2 to 2yrs ago) and the touchscreen keyboard is not very buggy at all (again the android OS is what makes or breaks the phone here...) Originally shipped out with android 1.6 the Hero was relatively a high level phone for its time but it has since become monolithic(it would seem thanks to its now "small" looking screen size of only 3.2in compared to most new phones that are coming out with 4.0in screens or bigger. Recently (or not depending on your perspective) HTC has decided to upgrade the Hero's android OS from 1.6 to 2.1 which is/was an outstanding boost in the UI and the general performance of the phone. Having had the HTC Hero for a year and being able to experience it in both the 1.6 and 2.1 editions of the OS I can happily state that if the Hero is one of the phones that piques your interest then I 100% back your purchase with miles and miles of smiles...
Hopefully your purchase of this device will yield as good a time as it has given me.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

coleman132002 submitted this review of the HTC Hero (CDMA):

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

First off, the phone itself is not bad. It's a nice, smaller sized smartphone. The trackball got a bit annoying but was definitely useful.

Some of my biggest issues are with the carrier (Sprint) but since they go together, I have to dock the phone some points.

I got the phone, new, in May of 2010. I purchased an EVO yesterday (10/14/10).

I would've kept it honestly, however, I was one of the lucky ones who had the memory leak issue with the device. I went from having nearly 60mb of memory free (and having 30+ apps downloaded) to having 0mb free due to the mail app sucking up 90mb of memory.

Anyway, this phone is outdated now, but if you are so inclined to buy it still, here's my review:

Pros:
-nice camera and camcorder
-easy to use
-fits in your pocket
-didnt drop many calls

Neutral:
-Color of device
-Droid 2.1
-trackball

Cons:
-Droid 2.1
-Small keyboard
-Lag when rotating phone
-Dialer (which was later updated)

...Like I said, my beef is more or less with sprint and their unwillingness to update it to 2.2, and the fact it took them a long time to fix the dialer issue.

It's a cool droid phone if you are a casual user, but for hardcore users, go with a 2.2 phone

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

stekos69 submitted this review of the HTC Hero (CDMA):

Overall rating: 1.5 (out of 5)

Not going to say that the HTC Hero was the worst phone I ever had... Ok, yes I will. The HTC Hero had to have been the biggest disappointment since Rocky 5. When I upgraded, I learned that I was able to get the phone for $50. Such a fantastic deal! A droid phone for even less than my monthly bill! Well, after three days, I started having issues with the phone; freezing up, not updating as it was supposed to, dropping calls for no apparent reason, at random times. So I figured that I had just gotten a bum phone. I took it back and exchanged it for the same model, and this time it lasted about a week. Dropped calls and just overall lousy reception, even though I did have good signal indicators. I'd be standing in the same spot, and my bars would free-fall from 5 to none in approximately a nanosecond. I go through Sprint, and have never had any signal issues, so I knew it had to be the phone. So, overall, I'd have to say that the apps on this phone are pretty cool, when they actually work like they're supposed to. But as a phone, the Hero is worthless.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

scoopdejur submitted this review of the HTC Hero (CDMA):

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

After having this phone for 8 mo. I traded it for a Palm Pre which is a much better phone. It doesn't have some of the integration and certainly not the apps the android phones have but the phone works, doesn't lag and the web os is positively the best OS for a phone out there.

As you have seen from other reviews here, the phone had some great ideas that never really worked out. This was the first android try from Sprint and as the htc and other hardware manufacturers have learned, you need more power than this little processor provides to make android a useful experience. They tried to go cheap on the cpu and android with the htc sense overlay requires at least what the iphone cpu has which you can find in the Samsung Galaxy phones or the almost any of the android 2.2 compatible devices as they all have a 1 ghz cpu.

The result of underpowering this phone gives you a very laggy experience even with advance task killer and other methods, you will still try to answer calls with a 3 second delay or try to call someone and find the lag long enough that you press it again just to find out that now you have hung up.

There are many optimizations in android 2.2 that may help with this situation however Sprint is not updating the Hero to 2.2. 2.1 was promised for over 6 months before it finally hit which did help things quite a bit, but the Hero still lags.

The other problem I found was it was too small for most hands to text with. It was very difficult to text with the lag and the size of the softkeys even in landscape mode.

+ Positives
+ android is getting to be a more polished experience
+ Uhmmm I still trying to think of something.

- Negatives
-Lag
-Screen to small to text on
-Batter life is awful, usually out within 2 hrs after 8 months use
-No more updates from Sprint for this device so no 2.2 android which would really help it
-

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

bradspace submitted this review of the HTC Hero (CDMA):

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I have owned this phone for about a year now. I will give you my pros and cons and then my insight.

**PRO**
>Form factor is nice. Not too big - not too small
>Screen is sharp and clear
>Touch screen is responsive
>Speaker phone and ear phone is loud enough
>Call reception is as good or better than other Sprint phone I have owned

**CONS**
>As with most Android/HTC handsets, the battery life is suspect
>In native form, is currently running 1.6
>OS is a bit laggy, combined with an underpowered processor
>No camera flash

Now, some of these things are easily overcome by running a cooked ROM. Currently, I am running Froyo 2.2 on this device and while occasionally a little laggy, still far better than 1.6. Go to xda-developers.com, READ and decide if you can handle what goes into running unofficial ROMS and proceed or don't. Would recommend this phone if you want to save some money and aren't afraid to experiment with your device.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Once you do get the phone to hang up it lags so bad it thinks you hit the end call button more than once and redials the person back half the time.
4) Today - my THIRD Hero - Sprint refuses to give me a different phone. Hung up on 4 calls in a row in a matter of 15 minutes.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Finding the perfect phone for me was hard till now! This phone is everything I want plus some...Not a disappointment at all...

My Pros:

-Great camera 5.0 mpx
-Great sound
-Awesome Apps (alot are free)
-Google and Android
-Navigation is Great
-7 functional screens that can be filled with apps or widgets
-Sleek unisex design
-Grippy feel
-Its not big and bulky
-I have not had any problems with any apps I've downloaded
-and more

My only cons:
-You have to install a task killer app, the apps run even if they are not in use, killing them everyonce in a while will save your battery and prevent lag on the phone.
-Phone Lag when making a call...but if task killer is used it will fix the problem.
-Low battery life...its worse when you first get the phone because you will use it alot, i usually charge it only at night and it lasts all day!

black16 submitted this review of the HTC Hero (CDMA):

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

Sorry, but the phone gets a major deduction for build quality. I don't have time to write a huge review, but I can tell you a brief statement about my experience.

Sprint has either allowed numerous phones recently out on the market to be produced with sub par build quality. I've had the Instinct and now this Hero. My biggest complaint is the leaking of dust underneath the glass of the capacitive screen. Someone insisted in that stupid button pad design instead of what the similar models had (ie Euro Hero, Droid Eris, etc) and this is the main source for allowing dust to enter. Combine that with a defective seal between the LCD and glass and you got a dust magnet. I carried mine around in a holster (which I hate) to try and prevent this from happening but on occasion I had to put holster and all in my pocket this winter. I still ended up with dust. At this point, I figure it is absolutely ridiculous to have a phone which cannot be carrried around in my pocket so I just said screw it and ditched the holster awhile back. I have a ton of dust spray from bottom left of screen (where the LCD plug in cable creates an even greater compromise on the seal) and it looks awful. I am hesistant on theEVO because of my experience with this HTC. I will likely get the Samsung Epic this October when I'm eligible because at least Sammy knows how to make a phone work well as a phone. This is something the Hero is not so good at either. The Sense UI overwhelms the puny processor and bogs the phone down. When you want to go to your phone book, the phone tries to update all the facebook and google info on each contact so it just gets really laggy. It was a good concept, but when I'm on the road and need to call someone I don't need to be fumbling and staring at the phone trying to scroll down and select the person I need to dial due to lag.

Cons:
Build Quality
Slow processor to keep up with ever growing Android
dust under screen (was very common issue--check the forums on websites)

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

xpinkpixi10x submitted this review of the HTC Hero (CDMA):

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Ive had this phone for about 2 weeks and I have to say Im lovin' it! I had the palm centro from 2008-2009 and then decided I wanted to try HTC, and had the HTC TOUCH PRO AND THEN THE DIAMOND. I LOVED the 3D flow on those phones! The Diamond was getting a lil outdated so then I went to the pixi and then a blackberry then back to the pixi, but then Ive noticed my pixi was being a p.O.S and had to junk it. So I was going to get the blackberry 9650, but then decided Ive already tried blackberry OS and didnt like it that much so decided to try android. I never thought I would like Android, but I decided on the HTC HERO, and Im so glad I did, because Its like my new best friend. I love htc sense and i love the widgets selection. I love the 7 scenes to chose from and customize them however you like. The screen is so smooth and my phone is fast, My battery lasts me about 8-10 hours a day, not complaininq since Im a stay at home mom till september then Ill be going to get my BA in Psychology. The only thing I dont like about this phone is how the phonebook and and call logs look. Ive never liked how HTC organized that. But other than that the Evo is almost the same except---bigger screen, live wallpaper, hdmi and faster processor. My mom has the Evo and its soo big, id be afraid to drop it while texting on it. I love my hero, and wont be upgrading prolly till the hero 2 comes out , or maybe ill change my mind and get the evo...Idk yet. It should get the new android update before the samsung intercept because that phone is garbage! I had that phone for a week and couldnt stand the low resolution screen. The camera is nice for a being a camera on a phone. My only complaint is there is no flash. I have no complaints about the phone. My phone never drops calls, doesnt lag. battery life lasts. For those of you that complain, the phone is not a mini computer where you can download TONS AND TONS OF APPS and then you wonder why your phone is slow!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

ibiza submitted this review of the HTC Hero (CDMA):

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

Would definitely make a better paperweight than a phone. This thing is HORRIBLE. I don't know how it got 4 star average - my hunch is people are reviewing this phone after 2 days with it.

HUGE problems:
1) Drops calls like crazy - part Sprint, but mostly the phone.
2) Almost impossible to hang up the phone after talking - takes a couple maneuvers to do it, so don't badmouth the person you were on the phone with right after hanging up - chances are you are not hung up!
3) LAG LAG LAG - can you say LAG. Once you do get the phone to hang up it lags so bad it thinks you hit the end call button more than once and redials the person back half the time.
4) Today - my THIRD Hero - Sprint refuses to give me a different phone. Hung up on 4 calls in a row in a matter of 15 minutes.

I like to say good things about products, I love to endorse something. But this phone is so God awful I could no with clear conscience recommend it to anyone.

This is how bad it is: I am going to T-Mobile after Sprint REFUSES to replace this phone with another kind. I am willing to pay the $200 early termination fee to RUN RUN away from this phone and all the mess.

Advice - IF you choose to get this phone with Sprint keep in mind you have only 30 days to exchange the phone for a different kind of phone. After 30 days, even with the extended warranty they will ONLY repair or replace the Hero. If you hate it after 31 days you are out of luck. Sprint actually told me today that they would take it in on trade, give me $80 credit toward the Samsung Moment which I can buy for an additional $320. ARE YOU KIDDING ME. Customer service with Sprint and customer appreciation is NONEXISTENT.

They can have my $200 - I will sell the junk phone on Ebay for $275 and use the $75 leftover toward the 3G Slide at T-Mobile.

SPRINT - yes do - Sprint on over to T-Mobile, Verizon or AT&T.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

HTC so far has not let me down, so I chose the virtual over the slide out keyboard. Once the phone figured out my kind of texting and touch sense...I can honestly say I text and type faster on my hero than the moment. Unless your a female who wears fake nails all the time, the screen does not respond to long nails. Forgot what a stylus is for since switching to this phone made so faster and easier to learn. Awesome Awesome Awesome!!!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Timothy.Koch submitted this review of the HTC Hero (CDMA):

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I purchased the Touch about two years ago, the Touch Diamond about a year ago, and the Hero (all on Sprint) about 6 months ago. I am amazed at what this phone can and will do.

PROS:
- sleek, slim, easy to slide in and out of pockets.
- extremely loud speaker
- great camera (for a mobile phone)
- sturdy feel
- strong feature set
- large, bright display
- responsive touch screen (when set properly)
- auto-sync with my Google account
- availability of numerous apps for just about anything you would want to do that doesn't come pre-loaded on the phone

CONS:
- a little hesitant at times
- battery life (when running mulitple data applications simultaneously)

Over all, I've been impressed with this phone. I've found a couple of glitches with Android 1.5, which seemed to have been fixed when I upgraded to 1.5.6 (or whatever it was). I've heard 2.1 will be greater, which I'm not sure how much more they can improve upon, but I'm excited to get 2.1 on my Hero.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

dahouse submitted this review of the HTC Hero (CDMA):

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

I was very excited to get this phone and after having it for 5 months I am on the fence.

It has great features but the performance is horrible. Flipping form portrait to landscape is slow 3 - 5 seconds. If you are on the web or texting and you get a phone call there is almost no chance of answering it because it will not pick you your answer command fast enough to process.

It does have great features and apps. Yelp, ALOQA, Assistance (Pageonce.com), Shop Savy are some of my favorite.

I do have a task killer and it works fine but even with all the "tweaks" out there, the battery is horrible. Mine is normally dead by about 7 or 8 at night without streaming any data (Pandora...). If you get this phone make sure you have access to charge it half way though the day.

Pros:
Applications
Easy interface
Form Factor
Android
Sprint Plan
Overall Functionality

Cons:
Performance
Battery Life

Summary -

If you need performance and applications and don't mind the price, get an iPhone. If you hate ATT - wait for this summer and get the EVO (has it all).

If you can deal with slow performance this phone is awesome and has great features.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
