kensmall submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-i700:

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

I've had this phone for over a year.

CONS
It was expensive. It crashes. Activesync and intellisync both choke from time to time. voice dialing requires ms software that does not come with the phone. documentaion is laking. when it crashes everything on it is lost so you better stop everything if a syncronization fails. everything after that last sync will be lost & when it fails to sync there is zero feedback as to why. these things are like the old 8088 pc. some software doesn't like each other & theres no way to get them to co exist. This all comes back to samsung who gives zero support and no driver updates. once you get it home you are on your own.

PROS
if you only need a light duty PPC with no syncronization through your carrier NOR with exchange and do not need to add much other software then this is for you. all your friends will be impressed and having a ppc, camera and phone in one big pocket rock. its better than 3 smaller ones.

I do not find the battery life to be a big problem because most of the day it sits on my desk cradle. i do have a car & home charger and spare battery for it. the signal reception is average not the best but not to complain about. many of the things that are hyped for these type of devices are non-existant. like there is map software to give you driving directions but there is no known way to access the gps location of where you are. so its useless unless your dialing 911. the ms voice command software is sweet but costs $50 & it operates the whole unit not just the dialer. I use the squawk box feature all of the time but it has a lower max volume than i want. vol control sucks as one control operates a few functions that should be controled seperately. It has no blue tooth to work with those headsets and although there are cards i cannot find any instructions to get the card to speak with a headset or anything.
i traded in the prior model which is a palm hoping for fixes but no luck.

all software problems

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

relic2279 submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-i700:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

So I bought this phone expecting a great palm phone. It's made by samsung! I didn't get what I paid for..

I've tried giving it the benifit out doubt but alas, I cannot stand aside anymore. I'm voicing my opinion in hopes someone will head my warnings.

The phone is actually not that bad, neither is the OS. If this is your first palm, that is.

The OS is slow, laggy and is not easy to navigate. The video playback is choppy at best and voice quality is sub par. You can't send email attachments and the phone is quite bulky. Thats expected I guess from a palm, but if it's going to be bulky, at least fill the phone up with features!

My final gripe is the battery life... it's horrific. Nuff said.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

LikeITontop submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-i700:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

It's the best thing since sliced bread but needs a little peanut butter.

PRO's
Contrary to the above it DOES have a speaker phone (the reason I bought it) and it works VERY well.

I can take my documents with me, edit them, beam them to another device or to a printer with IR (very cool)

I'm old... and I can see the buttons (saves on minutes)

Stores all my outlook stuff.

With an optional wireless card I can cruise through Starbucks and download my email or visit my favorite porn site while I'm waiting in line for my Latte.

Does everything my laptop does except crash on me.

I can get and view faxes with it.

Stores call logs for 6 months (but has a memory limit)

Easily used as a weapon to ward off muggers when I go to DC or NY (its heavy). Then I can use it to call 911 - they can figure out where you are if you've enabled the GPS feature (Not that help will actually come in those places)

CONS

Carrying case just sucks. Somebody needs to make a comfortable case with a opening in the front so you can actually use it.

Car power cord needs to be redesigned - breaks easily.

Nobody including Verizon and/or Samsung can get your information off of it if you should have to. Get a pencil sharpener!

Only works with Verizon Service.

Can't send videomail.

It doesn't float or bounce well and it costs $200 to put in a new screen when you drop it on a rock, not to mention you'll be without it for a "while" while you get it fixed (GET THE INSURANCE!!).

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I have called Samsung, Telus mobility,(my service provider), Microsoft, the company I bought the unit from and the company who installed Windows XP on my desk top and no one can seem to help me. They all pass the buck. Runs mpegs, mp3s, games, take pictures, open Word, Excel files, Adobe etc along with the phone service and internet/data service, it pretty much beats what I see out there, dealt with the new Treos, Blackberries and Siemens already but this is the most flexible when it comes to apps. Wish it had a faster processor. Waiting for the new i7300 to come out so I can check it out.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

bigheavyphone submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-i700:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

If you are going to buy a PDA/Smart phone the i700 is really sweet (but expensive). But if you are trying to think of whether or not to make the switch from a cell phone and palm pilot to a smart phone here's some tips.

1) This is big and akward phone: Compared to toting around a tiny flip phone in your pocket, this is a pretty sizable piece of hardware. And an expensive one. So, if you are like me and heading to a bar, a ballgame, or to the gym, you probably won't carry it around with you all the time. Plus it comes with a horrible carrying case. There's a pretty good but cheap one at Circut City by CaseLogic or something that sells for $11 that is much better, but this isn't the type of accessory that goes with the latest fashion styes. For a phone that costs around $500 you want to protect that screen, considering this isn't a flip model.

2 This is a very powerful PDA. I was a Palm user before, but as a PDA this kicks butt. Great features for text entry and synchs with your outlook or lotus notes (you'd need to buy some additional synch software from lotus though). The pocket streets feature is great for those business trips where you aren't sure what street you're on. Plus nothing beats the long lines at a waiting room like the internet access to catch up on your headline news, listen to MP3s

3 Battery life: In the showroom they have the little battery attached. The extended life battery adds some serious weight, but improved talk time, but they never display that version.

Under no circumstances purchase a non-samsung car charger to go with this product. I ordered one through Verizon and it fried my phone. Luckily it was insured and still under warranty so my new one is coming tomorrow. But Samsung won't help you if you don't use their car-charger, and verizon will point the finger at you for dropping it or something.

Carry your palm pilot with you for a full week like you would a cell phone to see if you are ready for this.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I wish I could download backgrounds to use on my today screen and files to use with the media player. The other complaint is the voice recognition software, why isn't that installed? 600.00 phone?? Hmmmm....?? The last one is I wish you could just pull in appointments on pop instead of syncing it.
Other than those three things, I'm pleased. If anyone has any sites for software or upgrades, please e-mail me @ mjfloresafmil@yahoo.com Thanks!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

odie7 submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-i700:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I have had this pda/phone for almost 6 months now and I am very impressed. Previously, I've had an HP pda and a separate cel phone. It's been great to just carry all in one.
Pros: Speaker phone works great. I have pop mail; can access the Internet; have an account program (purchased separately) for my checking, credit cards, etc.; can listen to mp3's (and with a car adapter can connect the pda to listen on my car speakers); have even found programs that condense dvd's into approx. 200mb - ex., I have Lord of the Rings ext. version, Pirates of the Caribbean, Last of the Mohicans, (which I've purchased the dvd's and compressed myself) and many more that I watch on my pda/phone - perfect for traveling! It comes with a program for voice recognition (without having to pre-record your voice) which allows you to access almost everything hands-free. It has 64mb installed memory; 1x capable; comes with ext. battery and standard; sync with Outlook and much more.
Basically, it literally is a full pda and phone in one.

Cons: It has a camera which isn't the best quality (but what can you expect with a phone camera?).

Overall, I would highly recommend the I700.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

shibu submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-i700:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

This phone is a great concept, with the exception of no bluetooth.

PROS 1) The big size, believe it or not. This originally turned me off to the phone. I preferred the form factor of the Samsung SCH-i600. I didn't go with that phone because it could not run am industry application I needed. To my surprise, the i700 actually could browse the internet & it's large screen was just big enough to make the device usefull to browse the web.

2) Software voice dialing. The app didn't work as well for me as others as it would often confuse names like david for davis but I like the idea of being able to replace it with another app & also the digit dialling worked pretty well(unless you try to diall 911 or 311).

CONS: 1) The biggest con (& the main reason I gave it such a low rating) is that it crashed after using it for 1 week. Not only loosing all my info since my last sync but loosing my phone as well. Nothing would restore it... not even a hard reset! The screen just went white & the text faded away never to be seen again. This is exactly why I didn't go with the Kyocera7135. It makes the phone useless for me & is unacceptable for most professionals.

2) No Bluetooth. What is a ~$700 uberphone with no bluetooth. The navigation system in my car is bluetooth... most palms & PPCs have it... my ($1500) laptop has it... a $700 phone/PPC should. Besides the wireless headset, I might want to use the 1X connection with my laptop.

3) My first hotsync took the better part of a day to work correctly. This included 1 call to verizon & 4 to Samsung support. It also is the first app to ever cause my Dell laptop (WinXP Pro) to crash! (blue screem & all). Future syncs went OK with the exception of one other blue screen & the tendency for the device to pop out of its cradle during hotsync.

If you are willing to deal with the flaws, go to ebay & buy the Audiovox Thera for $200.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

canuck submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-i700:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I did give this Sumsung SPH i700 phone/pda a 4 because it does almost everything well. But sadly to say..... there is a problem. I decided to run a video on my pda. I downloaded it into the sd memory chip and switched on turbo mode then started up the windows media player 8.5 that comes with the unit. It runs very choppie. like every second frame is missing.... I thought it was my sd memory chip so i installed it into a hp ipac 1940 and tada.... it works there but not in my samsung SPH i700. Am I just being picky? or did i forget to do something? or......heaven forbid.... is this unit slower than one of those affordable hp pdas? has anybody else run a video???? aparrently you can pack 2 feature films onto a single 256meg sd card.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Once enabled you can now use the side keys to turn the volume up or down. Hope this helps

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

rustic submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-i700:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I used to use a LG phone and connect to my laptop via tehther cable for internet access. phone ran down fast, cumbersome cable connection. Using phone keys for sms sucks!

Everthing has changed now!!! this phone/pda is the ONLY one you should consider.

On Telus (BC, Canada) all the features are good to go with the exception of the elusive GPS!?!

I won't list the pros as it does everything as promised, read the features and go. I know that some US Verison customers have POP access problems but that is not the case here (Do not know my software version sorry) I seamlessly switch betwen SMS, ActiveSync and POP.

CONS, Documentation sucks, I mean it is really bad! Speakerphone is not loud enough, proprietary audio jack and the case has no belt clip or card pockets (simple little features that could have been added)
I should also say thAt it is difficult to get accesory's for it up here.

There is not a single other PDA/Phone combination out there that comes close. finally Pocket PC comes out ahead of, who are they again foot?, finger?

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

EtherMonkey submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-i700:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Don't get me wrong, it's a NICE phone. A little on the large/heavy side, but considering it replaces a separate PDA, it's a worth the bulk.

The phone includes two batteries: slim and extended, plus a desktop charger that can charge both the phone and the second battery.

The screen is bright and clear inside, but difficult to see outside in sunlight.

Digital signal strength seems fine. Verizon disables analog entirely. I guess that's ok, because I don't think that Verizon provides analog coverage as part of current contract plan you can get for this phone. Unfortunately, that means I can't use the phone in my home area of Northeastern PA.

Having a Pocket PC is a new experience for me. I was a Palm user. It's nice to be able to synchronize to Outlook, and also access several POP3 accounts. I've not yet experienced anything like the 40-144kbps transfer rates advertised, but I'll keep trying.

A previous review talked about speakerphone capabilities. I've spent an hour trying to find such a capability, and don't think it exists. As far as I can tell, both from playing with the phone and reading, even searching the documentation, there is NO SPEAKERPHONE.

Also, it does a good job as an MP3 player, but make sure to buy a big SD memory stick.

The block character recognition works ok, once you get used to the PocketPC style. I'm most impressed with the handwriting recognition, which is outstanding, though limited by the small size of the screen.

The voice note recorder is also a very handy tool.

The included stereo headset/mic is good, but the wire is too short to use comfortably while driving.

Pros: Good integration of phone and PDA. Particularly useful if you are a Microsoft Exchange user and can setup access for Wireless Sync. Just about every feature you could want, except...

Cons: Needs a good case, no speakerphone, large compared to non-PocketPC phones, and of course, limited battery life.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

tangoskiss submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-i700:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Everything I every wanted in a pocket pc phone and more. I can be on the phone and be playing a game of chess at eh same time. It has been three weeks since I bought my phone I never had a drop call. The Speakerphone option is very nice to. I can be driving somewhere and all I have to do is hold down the talk button and be hands free to talk to who ever. The software for this phone is almost endless. If you have the memory and the money there this pocket pc phone can do about anything you want it to from changing the channel on your TV to controlling your computer actions. The battery life is so great on the phone. The phone comes with two batteries. I have own 3 pocket pc phones and this one is the first one I had that has a turbo mode in the power options. This makes your pocket pc run and load programs faster. If you didn't know this you are able to play Nintendo Emulation games on your phone. And the Turbo mode on the phone gives it enough power to run almost normal. The camera on the phone is great and takes excellent pictures. On the right setting it looks like the pictures are 2.0 mega pixels.

Ok now it's times for the flaws in the phone. Well for one thing if the phone is going to be a camera phone it should be able to send picture message, but you can't. You can't even send your picture in an email in the text message only numbers well go in the send box. The phone doesn't come with any software where you can get email from a POP3 account. Or email at all. You have in use the ActiveSync to send your email off through your outlook outbox. The reset button whole it so small you have to get something as small as a needle to reset it with. Maybe it's just me, but I don't even see a hard reset button on here. ALSO…. I have to fight with pocket pc to stay connected to the internet. If I am sending an email and it takes over a minute the connection will end and I have to start all over. Overall the phone is so great.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

marathonfl submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-i700:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I've been researching, studying, and waiting for this device. For me the camera was just a neat bonus. Anyone looking for a PDA sized phone with Microsoft's Pocket PC 2002 (Phone edition) then this is it.

Functionality: I haven't had a single dropped call yet and almost all issues were a direct result of my tinkering.

Pros (the ones that got me):
* 64mB RAM and RAM
* 1X data capabilities
* Voice dialing and contact dialing by tapping contacts.
* Contacts are directly imported from Outlook when you sync.
* Terminal Services built in for connecting to a terminal server.
* Can be used as a modem for connecting to your laptop.
* Can record phone conversations, take notes during a call, add the caller to the contacts list quickly.
* Removable battery with a spare.

Cons:
* GPS is advertised but not explained well enough. You cannot currently run any mapping or driving-direction software and get the phones Lat/Long location via the phone. I know of at least one Motorola phone where this is possible. The cell towers will eventually calculate the location and then you could run their apps; probably for a charge.
* Bluetooth is not built-in.
* SDIO Bluetooth add-ons currently don't support the "headset-profile" so they can't access the audio signal. However, you can use an adapter via the 2.5mm jack.
* Dialing via the supplied headset (of add-on) would be great if you could tap the headset button and start VoiceSignal and tell it the number to call.

Suggestions:
* Get the VoiceSignal updated software from their web site and install that version http://www.voicesignal.com
* Keep a charged battery with you.
* Get the America's Choice plans (after 6/2/03) because you can use Verizon's high speed network at the cost of minutes.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Some of this new functionality takes a little getting used to if you never owned a Pocket PC or PDA phone though.

Also, this phone is NOT Tri-Band Analog and Digital, the Verizon version is Dual Band Digital only. A year or 2 ago that would have made a difference, however Verizon has built up its digital network to the point where that no longer matters for most.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
