narn3049 submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-4900:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I used this phone Sanyo SCP4900 for Sprint for a personal and kinda work phone. It was pretty tough actually and took up huge beatings. It fell from shelf and got dunked, and it proved to serve me well. For looking like a basic bar phone, it still had games, a bunch of cool ringtones, and downloadable pictures so you could personalize it to your liking.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Spartan 104 submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-4900:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

When I was on Sprint a few years back, this phone was the undisputed RF King. The 4900 was a true workhorse. This phone could practically pull down a signal anywhere and was pretty much indestructible. If all you needed was a reliable phone, this was it. Sure it was a little on the bulky side, screen was a little smallish but like I said before, this phone is a true workhorse. Notable features: Loud and clear speakerphone (probably one of the best speakerphones I've used yet), color screen (leaves a lot to be desired compared to phones now, but it wasn't too shabby back then), and excellent battery life. Again, another winner from Sanyo.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Fewest dropped calls. Long battery time. The directory is a little cumbersome but after 4 years, I guess I'm used to it.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Summer 2006 my phone was stollen and i had the choice of two older Sprint phones, a Samsung and this Sanyo. Because of the size, I chose the Samsung first but after a trail of that one and some research I found this phone to be, despite its age and size, a wonderfull phone. It never has dropped a call for either my mom or I and she said she absoulutly never had any problems with it whatsoever. Its is a great phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Yes I wish it had EVDO and Bluetooth but as a phone, making and receiving phone calls, the 4900 rocks! Drove from Austin,TX to Corpus Christi, TX (232 miles) on one call and it didn't drop the call once.As soon as Sanyo comes out with a Bluetooth EVDO phone I will give it a try!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

pandashekki submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-4900:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

Okay, it could be that I got this phone a little late, so it may be just past its prime. But I seriously do not like this phone.

+The colors and display are vivid, I will give it that.

+The menu GUI is pretty neat, the whole cylindrical perspective thing.

-Otherwise, GUI for everything else and the font is just plain ugly.

-The half-duplex speakerphone just doesn't seem useful in any way shape or form. Way too many complaints from people I talk to on speakerphone.

-It's chunky. Lightweight for its size, but big.

-The phone itself is ugly too.

-Short mail instead of regular SMS text-messaging sucks. Sometimes, it takes a really long time to connect to the internet. Ok, make it a lot of times.

-Sound quality is not all that great. I thought Sanyo had a good rep for sound? Not this phone.

-Maybe it's just because I'm in Atlanta. Maybe it's just Sprint.

-Short cut for phone book is the right button?? That's jsut awkward.

-The vibrate option is only available by itself, no vibrate, or with the highest setting of ringer volume. Cannot be used with any other ringer setting.

-BATTERY LIFE SUCKS.

-key guard apparently cannot be set to automatic. You have to set it yourself each time. I'm just too lazy :-P

I'm getting a new phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

It ALLWAYS has service. I'm a cinglar guy now, mainly b/c of their GSM network, but if you MUST have sprint. This phone ROCKS! You'll never worry about not having service. I did alot of research before buying and went against the flipphone craze out there for this phone. I have had it for 18 months now and am very pleased. It has great reception, battery life, menus and sturdiness. It still works like new. I am very hesitant to replace it with any of the current models available but if I do I will keep it as my backup incase the new one gets stolen or something I will feel fine going back to the 4900.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The screen has 2 giant cracks on it now but I didn't want to spend money on a new phone and really everything I need still works fine.

====
Pros:
1) battery life is great, especially with "sleep mode" on

2) speaker is great, although its half-duplex, but its very useful and easy to activate

3) beautiful screen, and using 3gupload.com i can upload pictures of my friends and use them as picture caller id

4) for each phone book entry you can have multiple numbers, diff ring tone for each, and a diff picture [thus the picture caller id]

5) gets signals in difficult places

6) using speed dial i can set one person to the #3 and then move the arrow key left/right to switch between mobile, home, office and so forth for that one person effectively having 3-4 numbers on one speed dial

----------
Cons:

1) the keys don't have the best lighting system, but this is just the keys, the screen is gorgeous

2) PCS Vision (internet) is a bit slower than is on a Samsung

3) sometimes phone would not pick up while being called but i believe this is more sprint's fault than the phone's

all in all if you find a good deal for this phone on Ebay or some other site then buy with the belief that you'll get a quality phone to do everything you need to in terms of phone calls.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

That is when it works...During the year I've owned two of these that the charging circuit malfunctioned which gave indications that the phone was being charged when it was unplugged. It would display charge complete when off and no charge had been attempted. Also it would ring rather than vibrate. Sprint replaced the second 4900 with the newer blue ruggedized 7200 Ready Link model...so far its working great.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

pehaada submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-4900:

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

This phone is great I have had it for 6 months now. Yes it is ugly and larger than other phones BUT IT NEVER DROPS A CALL ! IT does what a phone should do make and recieve calls ! I can be in many places that other sprint customers can't make a call and guess what i have full bars ! It may be big but there is a reason why it works so well ! It doesn't have the cool factor but the hours you save by no longer being frustrated about making a call is well worth the size. In chicago and Illinois and everywhere else i have travelles nothign else is worth my money ! IF you are into the cool look or some dorky features look else where but if you want to USE A PHONE FOR it's orginial purpose this is the phone for you. Stop getting upset with your phone not working skip the marketing hype and get a real phone that can get crystal clear calls. The space was put to good use the phone jsut works !!!!! and the data features hooked to a laptop are perfect !!!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Demonfeed submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-4900:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

This phone is absolutely perfect. The speakerphone setup is amazingly uncomplicated, the internet brower is very user friendly, the signal is unrivaled, the features of the phone only add the gold trim on an already invaluable phone. I have a hitachi p-300, and used to have this phone. There has never been a time I wished more to go back to an older phone. The only downside to this phone is that it was discontinued.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

It gets good reception and has a wonderful speaker phone. The only things I didn't like about it was the color display was not as clear as it could have been and the browser was a little slow

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

tbrusky submitted this review of the Sanyo SCP-4900:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

Its a wonderful phone for me who had to switch from the Kyocera 2255 because of hot urning phones issues and got this sweet phone for little of nothing Sprint store told me to pick out a phone because of the problems of the Kyocera 2255, and now after 1 year almost. I still see no problems, never had to update software, but I do get the lastest PRL update as soon as I see it out on many newsgroups. The only thing I wish Sanyo would do is go back to the 4900 and make a few changes and call it SANYO 4900Z, this would include a tri-mode. 1900CDMA, 800CDMA,800AMPS. A bit littler. But other than that a wonderful phone who hate flip phones. I hate 800AMPS when Sprint doesn't have coverage I wish I had Tri-mode and still have digital coverage same quality but on someone else's network, I'm not asking much but it would be nice for an updated SANYO 4900.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Great signal strength, fantastic battery life, extremley dependable. I am seriously considering getting rid of my home phone and going with this phone alone. This is the phone that all other companies should pattern theirs on. This is what a cellular phone should be.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
