Magnagarde submitted this review of the HTC G1:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I got this phone about a year ago. Even though it was old when I got it and even older now, I still love it. It was the first phone I flashed a ROM on to. Regardless, eve with stock software, it runs great. Not as fast as today's androids but still quite capable even today.

Screen is great, a little too high with the white balance. Nice bright screen, easily read outdoors. Responsive capacitive touchscreen is nice. Honestly looks a lot better if you put a darker theme on it.

Calls are great, never had any issues with that. Speaker phone is also nice, rarely providing feedback or distortion, if ever. Never had any calls drop with my service provider.

SMS, basic apps, and everything that a smartphone should have is present and works perfect.

Where this phone really shines is the ability to put custom ROMs on it after you've rooted it. Rooting is worth doing anyways, but the simplicity of just putting a ROM on this phone, deciding it doesn't work and then trying another one is fantastic.

Sometimes this phone hangs up, but only for a few seconds maximum. Flashing a highly optimized ROM is the solution to this problem. But this is more of a review of the stock software, which is the only negative thing about this phone, and even then stock 1.6 is great.

Right out of the box this phone is already highly capable, but the true magic of android is the virtually limitless potential for customization you have. Don't like the OS? Replace it. Don't like the LED colors? Change them. Don't like the dialer? Change it! This phone starts off basic, but you can turn it into a completely different phone. And that is the magic of android.

Even today, I would recommend this phone. It is not truly obsolete. Much like other smartphones, it will continue to be a highly capable phone for as long as developers are interested in it and as long as you can customize it to your specifications.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

jmastrol submitted this review of the HTC G1:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Okay, so by today's standards the G1 is not a fabulously powerful and fully featured device. I will give you that. However, for its day, it gave features and potential that few could rival. I purchased one the day it was released and have used it as my "backup" device once I bought an updated handset (hardware).

PROs: Full integration with Google services (mail, contacts, tasks, schedule) for free (other devices were, and still do) charge extra for synchronization with their servers. Broad range of apps to choose from. You can do anything from find low gas prices to track your bank balance. Excellent full sized keyboard (I still have trouble with devices that lack this feature). You can easily unlock the phone and load custom ROMs, which really makes this device shine. You can partition your micro-SD card to have both ext3 and swap file systems on it and the Android software will use it for those purposes (making the device faster and allow app storage on SD card).

CONs: Battery life could be better (I keep a spare or charging cord with me). Camera is not great. Lots of plastic makes it feel "cheap". Not everyone likes the "chin" to the right of the keyboard when typing on it.
Speaker phone is okay, but could be better.

This was the Google developer phone and is so easy to customize. Now-a-days it is slow, even with custom ROMs installed to speed it up. But, still, what a great phone!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The Google Android operating system offers good integration with Google applications as well as access to the Amazon MP3 Store and YouTube. As more applications become available, the G1 will also become a more powerful smartphone for all types of users.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

ElPatron17 submitted this review of the HTC G1:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

When I 1st got the G1 I thought I was garbage, but it turned out to be a good phone. When I 1st got the Behold II I fell in love with it. they were both identical but the Behold to was slightly easier to use. Most peoples complaint with this phone is the battery life. My complaint is the battery, the touch screen and the way they made it slide sideways. To fix this battery problem i just downloaded PowerMax on both phones and the battery jumped from 8hr max to 22hrs on the Behold II, and from 6hr max to 20hrs on the G1. On the Behold II it was the battery life and t-wiz and i just replaced the t-wiz with LiveHome and if you read me Behold II review you'll see other add-ons. Overall both phones are good but the Behold II wins when tweaked. Not even the 2.1 update makes the G1 better, and tweaking it doesn't either. Behold II takes this battle if you just follow my instructions on tweaking it.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Very sluggish.

Awkward slide capability (and horrible design), particularly when talking to someone on the phone and trying to use the keypad at the same time.

Battery charge was poor.

Big, bulky, heavy.

Camera shutter speed horrible; mediocre camera overall with no flash.

PROS:

Android was very nice, but some apps had their problems.

Never had dropped calls.

Excellent coverage and sound clarity.

Sturdy.

Nice display; outstanding when it first came out.

Web browsing speed wasn't bad.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Well, let's get into it.

Cons:
The battery sucks.
Low memory (I know this was the first Android, but still....).
No 3.5 headphone jack.

Pros:
3G
No dropped calls
Decent camera
Easy to use keyboard
Many apps to choose from.
Solidly built.

Sometimes, I miss it. but I gotta keep up with the Jones, Kardashians, etc..... I will probably go back to using this even after I upgrade to my next Android device. (That's right - I'm sold on Android)

Let's talk pros and cons.

Pros:
-Great touchscreen (I text using the virtual keyboard on it most times now) and features.
-Free apps, and paid ones as well.
-Extra features and speed with Root.
-Fun!
-Slide-out QWERTY.
-Accelerometer
-Synced with GMail
-Google apps

Cons:
-Battery
-No headphone jack (3.5mm)
-Battery
-Battery
-Battery

All in all good phone if you're not using this for media purposes, and don't use the phone often, great choice! But if you're looking to get the most from your device with high usage, I'd recommend checking out one of the G1's successors.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

moonlitwings submitted this review of the HTC G1:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I was one of the silly early-adopters of the phone back when T-Mobile released it. Fell in love with it immediately, though this was my first real smartphone since updating from the more basic cellphones, so I may be biased. :)

Pros
- Syncs with a lot of Google services
- Physical Keyboard!
- Effortlessly browses mobile-friendly pages, and even SOME non-mobile friendly pages!
- Responsive touch-capacitive
- Decent 3G speed, clear calls!
- Android market allows for many creative apps, less relaxed restrictions vs. iPhone's app market
- Android OS ! Runs on Linux kernel! Android's biggest plus is being able to run multiple apps in the background, based on unix
- Beautiful, VERY bright screen
- Geek friendly phone!

Cons
- CPU: Capable of 528MHz, but underclocked to 245-384 MHz to prevent overheating / increase bat. life. There is an app to overclock, at the expense of bat. life or overheating!

- System Memory: 192MB DDR-RAM! Most smartphones older than the G1 have 256-288MB DDR-RAM! After the phone loads, it leaves very little memory available for stuff like apps that customize your home-screen.

Note: There are apps to turn your microSD card into more 'memory' for your phone are out there, plus a 'task manager' to close programs still hiding in memory.. Joe Sixpack likely won't know about this, though.

- Games: A year and nothing truly mind-blowing. The phone is quite Java-heavy, a programming language that is friendly only to basic, boring games. 3D games can be done, but some devs say its difficult, and attempts I've seen are bland and unimpressive vs. iPhone's games.

- Size: May be too big for most, especially if compared vs. the iPhone. Turns into a beast of a phone if one decides to add a protective shell to the phone.

- Android Market's openness results in a lot of stupid apps like the 'fart app'.. Or dumb kids thinking this phone is a Sidekick on steroids giving useful apps poor ratings because they don't know how to use them!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

onenessguy submitted this review of the HTC G1:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

i just bought a g1. I have been an avid berry user, and thought i would never be able to let go of the berry. when i bought the storm my heart broke. i played with the iphone for awhile as well...

and i'll say it.
the g1 shames every phone i've ever had.
the berry is cool.... if you only have used the berry. i don't work in an office... and i enjoy a "fun" phone as well as being able to have my email access. the berry is a SOLID phone is what it is (minus the storm).

The g1 gives me all my emails. i LOVE the text layout.
the i phone... is nice... but glitches way to often and i can not stand touchscreen keyboards......

the g1 is like the iphone, but without all the little annoying things that come with having an iphone.

AND the g1 has available a ridiculous amount of cool FREE apps.

i love this phone. two thumbs way up.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

hello112 submitted this review of the HTC G1:

Overall rating: 2 (out of 5)

I purchased the G1 to replace my Sidekick LX 2007, I have been looking for a phone that is better than a sidekick and thought i found it, finally a phone with a keyboard and a touch screen with Google's Android how could it go wrong.
Well it did!!!

Pros: Wifi, GPS, Awesome Auto-Focus Camera, Android Network to download different software.

Cons: Super Slow, can only have 6-8 applications open at anytime (including Aim, phone, internet, etc), BATTERY LIFE= 6-8hrs Idle or 3 hours if you are using it.

G1 has fun programs, but not very useful ones.
had it for a few days disliked it, and tried to give it a chance. So I gave it 2 more weeks, still couldn't handle its speed, battery, and being kicked off AIM, Yahoo IM and any game that i had opened.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
