Strong flip mechanism--Great screen for its time--Very tough construction--Excellent keypad--Good reception--Great talk time with extended use battery Samsung threw in for free!

CONS: None. I mean it. I think it's the best phone Samsung ever built.

I used this phone waaay back--around 2002-03 on Sprint's network in South Florida.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I am really impressed with how long it has held up. The service is great. I got the extended battery, and turned off the GPS and I only have to charge the battery once a week. I do talk a lot on it too, but don't use the internet.

This phone is very durable. I have dropped it numerous times and just recently broke the antenna. The phone still works GREAT. I really don't want to get a new phone but am shopping around just incase this one dies. It could possibly go another couple of years. I did get the camera with it, but don't use it since I got a real digital camera.

I hope my next phone is as great as this one!
I love Sprint and Samsung.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I LOVED IT. It was love at 1st sight. i had this phone for over two years but I recently upgraded to a phone with text messaging. I really do miss my a500 like whoa. It was my first true love.

I'd totally recommend this phone to teens who parents only want them to havea phone, with no extra perks. It is a color phone though

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

ny submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A500:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I have owned this phone for a year and a half. It has a great display, the built-in answering machine is a nice feature and helps to save on voicemail costs, loud ring volume and very good sound quality. This phone has a few flaws, it does not possess the advanced voice activated dialing of the Samsung SPH-a600 or a660 (digit-dial), the beep for the built-in answering machine is quiet. Also, my Samsung a500 after about 65 phone book entries started shuffling the phone numbers in the phone book. For example my house number got switched with my best friend's cell number. I work in the wireless industry and have had several customers complain about the same problem. Don't get me wrong the phone is quite good, but the hefty price tag it carries means there is better value to be had for less.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

resrob66 submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A500:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

The Samsung A500 has some nice features. Nice bright screen. But, only if you are indoors, otherwise it's unreadable in sunlight or outdoor shaded areas. Nice volume on both talking and ringer, except when the phone decides to give you one more loud ring in your ear after you open it to answer. It's slim and easy to slip into your pocket. Perhaps too slim and slippery, it's hard to open one handed, there are no ridges or indentations to allow you to flip it open easily with one hand. Now for the bad stuff. This phone has been nothing but trouble for me from the start. I've had to get it replaced twice already. I'm on the third one and am very tired of its poor performance. The first one had a bad screen. The second one would not accept updates from the Sprint store. None of them could receive a strong signal in various parts of Louisville or other major cities where I travel. You can stand in one spot and the signal will go from nothing to full just by moving your arm around. Or have 2 bars go to no signal just by dialing a number. Rarely have I every seen a full strong signal. I travel a lot, friends with different phones will have good signals on Sprint and I'll have one bar or nothing while standing in the same spot. I'll miss calls, the phone never rings then a message will appear. I drop calls on a regular basis. "Signal Faded", is the most used notification this phone gives. Naturally the folks at Sprint tell me the same old canned lines about you live in a bad reception area, or you must be doing something wrong, or it just needs a software update. Bottom line is this phone is not what it's made out to be. If the performance and reception were as nice as the form and looks, it would be great. As it is now I would not waste my money on another Samsung phone. This phone is so bad it has me considering not only changing my phone but ditching Sprint as well. The Samsung A500 is a lemon.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I currently work for Sprint and still own a A500 and the only thing I would trade it for is the the PTT phones. The battery life is short with the slim line battery but the extended life battery works wonders. Overall this is a awesome phone and highly recommend it.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

GBean submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A500:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

For all you who say sprint has really bad service... Where do you live? I go all over the Country with my Samsung A500 and have had no problems. and to top that I have used a Sanyo 4700 and an 8100 And have yet to see the Sanyo outperform the A500. I would say they are about equal, niether being better or worse than the other. I personally got mine brand new for $30 and can't complain one bit, except that I now want my wife's Samsung VGA1000, as it has almost too many features, if there is such a thing.

Pro's:
1. Very Compact, making storage in the pocket pretty swell.
2. Clearer screen than the most other vision phones available during or previous to the time this phone was released.
3. works on the Best all digital network in the US.
Con's:
1. Battery life is robbed by that ultra bright screen. (Three options: Turn on "Power Save Mode" get extended battery or a VPA- Vehicle Power Adapter.)
2. Sprint seems to not train it's employees on the technical side of things. rather, makes excuses or educated guesses due to ego, whatever.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Demonfeed submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A500:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

I am a former employee of sprint pcs, the csr you see when you walk into a sprint store who told you what was wrong with your phone and why it wouldnt work... This phone was horrible. We would recommed other models to customers just because of the problems this phone created. We had plenty of people come into our store trying to get this phone just because of the way it looked. The clamshell design is nice, but the overall phone design is horrible. The charging pin is VERY prone to breaking off, and since there is no way to secure it, its only a matter of time before it breaks off. The phone itself has a problem with freezing up to the point that it will no longer work properly, and more often than not, those 200 phone numbers you can store? The phone has a nasty and vicious habit of erasing them with a low battery...not every time it got low, mind you, but thats when it seemed to happen the most. Then there is the problem of getting that information back... You couldnt. We lost many a customer who could not get that all too important phone book back, and who didnt feel like paying an extra 5 dollars for the ability to use the voice command feature where you could store numbers outside of the phone. And they are right, convenience is the reason consumers purchase cellular phones. This is a bad buy, and I would avoid it at all costs. Try to get a sanyo phone, prefferably the 4900.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

ajgalli submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A500:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I give this phone a solid 4. I have used 3 Samsung phones before this one. And I used my phone as the only way of communicating. No land lines, just my cell phone.

First, signal is just fine anywhere I go. But even when signal isn't great (none or 1 bars) I still keep my calls and they are clear.

Battery life isn't great. But I turn off the location function and that help... not to mention it really isn't working quite.

The screen is bright and colorful. Menus work like other Samsung phones.

I don't like the browser. It looks right and works, but on occasion I will receive an error and power cycling the phone is how to fix that.

I've had this phone for a year. I live in Chicago and travel all over the US. It has been a great phone to me. No real complaints. I think it's a good choice. I have upgraded to the A600... you'll be hearing about that phone in a few months.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

For all you folks out there who say you can't charge their battery w/o the phone plugged in then go to samsung website and order their stand alone charger for about 20 bucks or so. Thought my LG5350 was a great phone but the A500 beats it up pretty well. NO one has a screen as sharp or as bright as the A500. Lots of free ringers and screen savers available from various web sites. Try it you'll like it.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

littlesorel submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A500:

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

I have owned this phone since it was first introduced. I love the look and feel of this phone. The color screen is wonderful and so is the blue illuminated keyboard. Size and weight are fine too. Sound quality, volume and clarity is best I have ever owned.

Down Side:
1. Battery life is dismal, and not even approaching half the promised talk and standby times. Worst phone I have ever owned for Battery life, the extended battery doesn't seem to last much longer than the standard battery.
2. Phone tends to get really hot after long periods of use.
3. The phone drops calls worse than any phone I have owned, 3 and 4 bars of strength and it will drop a call.
4. I prefer flip phones. Belt clip is big and awkward, there hasn't been a good one since the sleek Startac. I wish all of the flip phone manufactures would go back and look at Motorola's design for the original Startac, it was sleek, simple and easy to use.
5.The Sprint PCS Vision service is slow and not worth farting with.
6 Finally, and this one is hard to explain, but the phone is just .......quirky. It does odd things. It will shut off all on it's own, it will lock up or wont work right so I have to remove the battery and reinstall. Sometimes, I answer the phone and say "Hello" 3 or 4 times before the person hears me. It is just quirky!
I am mixed on this phone. I waited a long time for a great quality flip phone that was also pretty cool, so I was really excited when Sprint introduced this phone, but it just hasn't lived up to my hopes. Soon, I will have had this phone a year and I will gladly switch phones if I can find a better one. I would prefer to switch to GSM (for worldwide travel), I just haven't found anyone that comes close to Sprints minutes and national coverage, for the price. I need mega minutes, I also get a 25% discount on my monthly rate because of my company. I am afraid I will probably be stuck with Sprint for a while.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

RingLeader submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A500:

Overall rating: 3.5 (out of 5)

I had this phone (and camera) for 3 months before buying the Sanyo 5300 the day it arrived in the store (the day before it was released). The only things it has that the Sanyo's do not are:
1) Voice Command - Slower than keyed shortcuts, so not a big deal, in my opinion
2) The ability to assign ringtones to alarms. However, since you can't program weekly or monthly recurring alarms, it has a greater shortcoming.
3) Attractive design - though I place function above form, it would be nice to have Sanyo quality in the Samsung package.

Downsides to owning this phone are lack of support for CMX ringers, which Sanyo readily supports, the lack of recurring alarm options, and a very poor quality camera, compared to others with built-in cameras. Even Sanyo's 8100 is better, and is at least $100 less expensive.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

DJVinny10 submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A500:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

When the Samsung A500 came out, it was by far the sleekest looking phone out there. Feature wise, it was great. The screen looks awesome and the OS is so easy to use. The extended battery for this phone makes it seem like you never have to charge the phone for like one week, and I use 750 minutes a month. Here are the downside...
1) You can not open the phone with one hand. There is no crease to use to open up. Most other cell phones you can open with one hand. This one, you have to master it yourself.
2) For a 3G phone, the only way to put pictures on it is to download from Sprint's website or by the camera. You can not e-mail a picture to your phone.
3) Memory. It could be a greater.
4) Ringer Volume. Not as high as you would like it to be.

I would recommend if you have the money to spare but I do not think worth the price.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

rog0385 submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A500:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I've only had a Sprint service plan since June and I have already had 3 Sprint phones. First the LG 5250, which didn't even last me a week. Got rid of that and got a Samsung A460. That phone was nice. But when the A500 came out; it was a must. So far, I've had no dropped calls even in a 1-2 bar area. My only con is the browser, if you start gettin errors your best bet is to log out or power cycle the phone. One other thing is, they should of made the screen size bigger to compete with the Sanyo phones. The TFT screen on this phone is sick though. The brightness will amaze you just as it has all of my friends. Not even the sun can bring it down. The phone size is very nice and I found it easy to hold in my hand. The voice command feature is a definite plus. It worked in even some of the worst noisy conditions. I am simply waiting for the A600 to drop so i can upgrade from the A500. Make it quick Sprint. I wanna built-in camera!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Jebus254 submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A500:

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

I personally think that this phone is over all a good phone, for any one looking for a color screen phone, this is a great choice. I on the other hand was lead to belive this would have awsome graphics, and much to my dismay is not so. I can't see the screen in the sun light. I think that the phone is laid out to easy, as far as the format. It is easy to move around in, in the menu. I do think this is a good phone for older consumer. As for the younger consumer, we are going need a few more things on a phone. Like a built in camera, a clearer screen, and a few more features.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

xj911 submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A500:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Well, here it is, Sprint's flagship 3G phone. This is the phone I currently own, it has some great features and is probably the top 3G phone (besides the Sanyo 5300) As a Sprint Employee I get to play with all phones so here is my take on the A500:

Good Stuff:
1. Great color screen, gets really good picture quality. Not a Sprint Phone out there besides the 5300 that can really match it.
2. Great web browser. I had the N400 for a while and the brower had some major problems, this phone is smooth and fast no problems as of yet.
3. Loud speaker, rings come through clearly and I can hear people talking a mile away.
4. Voice tools, voice activated dialing was all the hype back in the day, now this phone has Voice Activated tools including being able to access the web browser, phone book and dialing by numbers all by voice alone.

Yuck!:
1. Samsung has always been bad about signal strength (with exception of the I300) and this phone is no different. Better than the N400 though...
2. Battery life is very very low. If you really like this phone and have to buy it, get yourself an extended life battery.
3. Phone tends to get really hot after long periods of use, seen this problem alot.
4. PRICE! This phone would be good at 199.99 but it really doesn't have the features of a 300 dollar phone.

Overall: I really think the High points outweigh the low points on this phone. I've seen all the 3G phones in action and this is my favorite by far. The only thing I really have a problem with is the price, it's a little too much for the features, but otherwise a sweet phone.

Questions about phones or Sprint? It has a few quirks, too, but is priced accordingly ($49 on Amazon right now!)

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

msrandall submitted this review of the Samsung SPH-A500:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I am truly impressed with the a500. I LOVE the TFT screen and the external display. THE SCREEN IS LIKE LOOKING INTO A PC'S MONITOR. The calls are crisp and clean sounding. The reception is about the same as my Sanyo 5150-I dropped one call since I had it and that was in Walmart where my 5150 dropped also. I think the battery life is very good but not excellent (neither was my 5150 battery life excellent). The only con I see in this phone is Sprint holding back the ability to import pictures and ringers via a data cable...I think in time that will come. I searched 5 days to find this phone...and I must admit this phone is more than just hype. Sure I miss my ringers on my 5150 but they aren't missed enough for me to go back...

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
