narn3049 submitted this review of the BlackBerry Pearl 8130:

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

I have a 3.0 rating because the trackball stopped entering on my Pearl after 1 year of normal use with a gel case and inivisishield on the phone. It had heavy use, but none I'd see that would effect the ball on it. Well I basically gave up on them after the Storm I had, had a software issue where it would stand straight up, but the screen wouldn't work in that mode, if you were on homescreen. I guess it was hardware. I did love the 7250 and the Curve. Just wished this and the Storm worked out for me!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

It freezes on me ALLLL the time and I have to restart it by taking my battery out about 4-5 times a day. I even try to clear out all my messages and web usage in hopes that will make it run better...but nope, don't work. I wouldn't recommend this phone to anyone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

bigvivx submitted this review of the BlackBerry Pearl 8130:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I have owned the Blackberry Pearl for almost a year. I've found that there are very few problems unless I caused them myself, ie: water damage, dropping the phone, etc.

I was told from the very beginning that you had to baby the track ball-- so I did. I was also told that I would need an external memory card so that I wouldn't not recieve text messages. Also something I was prepared to purchase.

I think the sound quality coming both from the speaker/music player and earpiece is sufficient. I suppose it could be better, but I haven't had any problems with it and it works for my use. I haven't had any issues with the e-mail or texting. I LOVE the suretype and I'm very uneasy about upgrading because I love it so much. The only downfall is the fact that all the sent/recieved text messages are all in one spot.

I find that when I only charge it when it's needed it makes my battery life go way beyond expected. I believe this might be true with all phones.

The only glitch-y behavior I have had problems with was when I took my phone to Cancun I acquired water damage. Again, that was my fault, but I was able to get another phone through the insurance plan that I have.

Pros:
- Small, compact size
- SureType is amazing
- Battery life is good
- Speaker phone/ music and earpiece give off clear sound.
- Internet browser is perfect for my needs.
- Trackball is easy to use.
- Convenience side keys are awesome.

Cons:
- Picture quality isn't the best, but it works.
- Takes awhile to re-boot if you have to completely restart the phone.

Overall, I feel like you just have to mess around with the phone until you get the settings you prefer so that you can make it your own. I adore my pearl.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Tattooedmunky submitted this review of the BlackBerry Pearl 8130:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

When I originally got this phone, I suffered with feelings of phone-inadequacy, since the Pearl is by far the smallest in the Blackberry lineup. After countless nights wondering whether I'd inadvertently purchased a girl-phone, I saw several guys on "The Unit" carrying this phone...problem solved.
Aside from the small feel, this is a pretty solid little phone. It fits nicely in your pocket and once you get used to the odd keyboard, you can easily type emails or texts one-handed. Some users have had some issue with the trackball and from time to time I did need to clean it out, however I never had any major issues. Phone calls sound fine, reception quality is solid, camera is okay for what it is, bottom-line...this is a great into-Blackberry. However, buyer beware, just like tattoos, once you get one, you'll most certainly get another.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I have now owned it for almost a year and I am ready to get a new phone.
Pro's:
-Scrolling with the ball is great
-E-mail is super quick
-E-mail and texting is really easy on the keyboard once you get used to it.

Con's:
-Drops calls at random.
-Battery life is really bad now. Total talk time now is about an hour.
-Occasionally it deletes call history and text messages.
-At times when you type someones name to call and push talk it takes you to the address book
-Randomly it shuts off.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The keyboard takes a bit of getting used to but after the first day or two it comes with ease (I actually have a hard time using the QWERTY keyboard on my husbands Curve now).

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

bobby2284 submitted this review of the BlackBerry Pearl 8130:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

As far as blackberries go this phone is on par with the curve or any other. Great size for sure, the best feature by far, a blackberry that doesnt feel like a boulder in your pocket. Yes the keypad takes a while to get used to, but once you do it really isnt bad. I loved my pearl and sold it as soon as the curve came out, for the full keyboard obviously, but regretted it since i got used to the keys, which are actually larger than the curves. Other than the keypad you can go read my review on the curve. They are pretty much operation wise the same phone. My main complaint about the pearl is the REDICULOUS video play back size. The screen is smaller to begin with and however the video formatting works it plays like 1/2 the screen size so you typically are looking at youtube or other videos on a postage stamp size screen. Realistically for the price you shouldn't complain. VZW online has them for free right now and it is really a great phone. No rebate just $0. For this quality of phone I don't see how anyone can argue with it. Final not wise: you do need a media card in the phone to record video or do custom ringtones, but come on people a 1gb card is like 5-10 dollars these days and if u dont have one you need to get one. Also if you dont clear out ur incoming emails and picture messages it does tend to get laggy, but these are pretty much givens. You should know you cant keep every email you ever recieved and I think the default setting actually delete old emails and messages if it gets low on space, and since the emails u get are copies of ur actual emails it really shouldnt be an issue. Just remember if you do not have a media card in the phone for additional storage space you really need to lock any messages of importance cause if u get low on space they could dissapear and u might have lost something u wanted. All in All it was a showstopper when they were Xhundred dollars the phone is free and its still great!!! $20 in the store if u cant wait for the mail lol

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

It's a small phone, but it has SO many fun features-I can't stop playing with it! It does tend to freeze up here and there . . & it can be a little slow too, but you just be patient w. it. If anything else, I do tend to find myself charging the battery at the end of every day (no a big deal though.) If you get it and decide you don't like it, you do have a thirty day trial, so you can always return it too. I only got this phone b/c it was free with a two year contract .. I've rly been having my eye on the curve, but I hear it does all the same things . . so, I'm pretty sure I'll be sticking with the pearl for a while :) I love it!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

BLubak1 submitted this review of the BlackBerry Pearl 8130:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

If you're looking for the most unreliable, quirky, erratically functioning excuse for a smartphone that money can buy, put the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 for Verizon at the top of your wishlist!

When I first received my Pearl, I was pretty happy with it. I was very pleased with the size of the device, particularly how easily it fits in a pants pocket, the SureType keyboard was fantastic, and battery life was unmatched.

But soon I found myself bowing to the Pearl's every random demand. I started spending countless hours diagnosing why e-mails have suddenly stopped appearing in my inbox, why I suddenly lost connectivity to the BlackBerry Internet Service, why the Pearl says it's roaming when it's not, why EVDO is suddenly unavailable when it should be full strength, why the radio turned itself off, why half of my personal settings are randomly or always ignored, why the star key on my keyboard won't work until I hit another key first, why my laptop randomly won't see my Pearl's memory card, why my routine data backup failed halfway through ... You get the idea. Maybe I should resend my service books? "You'll start receiving e-mails within 20 minutes." Or not. Maybe I need to yank the battery? Ooh, that fixed the issue, for about 5 minutes. Maybe I need to delete and setup my e-mail accounts from scratch? Nope, still no incoming e-mail. Oh no, the Pearl silently lost all cellular connectivity, so I need to toggle the radio on and off and hope it restores. If not, another battery yank. Maybe I should update my device software? Hmm, that fixed squat. Wow, Verizon partially enabled GPS on the Pearl? Great! About 60% of the time, it acquires my coordinates on the first try. Truly business class.

The BlackBerry Pearl 8130 is the smartphone that you don't own because it owns you. Buy yours today and you'll spend all of your free time trying to figure out why it isn't working as it should.

... Until you do what I do and smack the crap out of it with a sledge in your garage.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I had to change phones once the track ball was not working correctly after owning in for 6 months of use. I upgraded the OS on the phone to 4.5 which solved the memory leak and erasing of data. the phone would erase logs to clear out memory. other then that it's a good phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

kmw288 submitted this review of the BlackBerry Pearl 8130:

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

I should have known. A $75 blackberry after rebates seemed desirable. Of course, there's a reason for this "great" price.

Like many have said before, the phone WILL erase your call log, test messages and emails if it feels a need to free up memory.

Whats worse is the phone CONSTANTLY crashes and restarts. There's been days where it'll restart more than 16 times (yes, its been so frustrating that I've lost my mind and started counting). Even when its not in use- It crashes. Forget long calls, it'll crash. Don't call your girlfriend, it'll crash and she'll blame it on you. Don't call tech support for ANYTHING using this handset because... It'll reset like clockwork after you finally get connected to a human being.
I've been through FOUR handsets- All of them have been kept stock with no additional installed apps.

But there are some pros. I'll break them down below:

CONS:
-Unbelievably Unstable firmware, you can count on constant daily crashes
-Poor battery life
-Slow to boot (about 2 minutes)
-USB receptacle quits working after a couple of months (very common problem). Cannot charge or sync.
-Side buttons are not "push and hold- So they get activated while phone is in pocket

PROS:
-Java support
-Lots of free apps available (from what I hear- I cannot install any or the crashing problems get worse)
-Great multimedia support
-Bright flash, great camera
-Sleek design
-Plenty of security features
-Awesome email integration

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

jryan submitted this review of the BlackBerry Pearl 8130:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

Verizon has their own proprietary software installed on most of their phones, unfortunately this software makes it difficult (if not impossible) to listen to music playing from the handheld & perform other tasks simultaneously such as setting an alarm, surfing the web or texting even on the phones they market as "music phones". This alone was the deciding factor in my decision to purchase the 8130. I have sold wireless phones for a long time now & I've learned a lot about manufacturer defects. I thoroughly understand the difference between a manufacturer defect & a problem created by the user or other actions upon the wireless device.

Pros: You don't have to deal with the horrible user interface that Verizon forces its customers to use. You can listen to music as you text, surf, etc. It offers excellent video capture, camera & voice recording. Excellent range on the voice recorder. I love the way you can just scroll down to view the entire history of messages with the associated person in the reply window. This eliminates having to save as a draft in the middle of typing a reply, going back & rereading what that person said in previous messages, then going back to the drafts & continuing with your reply like you would with other phones. It is very easy to add music to the device as there is no specific software necessary to do so. I use windows media player & sync to the micro SD card I have easily installed in the phone.

Cons: MANUFACTURER DEFECTS I'm waiting on my 8th 8130 since Feb. If you own this phone DO NOT be afraid to call the instant you have a problem with it. You'll be sent a refurbished phone, but (in most cases) it will be in better working order than the one you already have problems with. Of all the phones I have owned and sold, the 8130 is the most defective model in my experience. 1st problem is the trackball, then will randomly shut off, then the USB port stops working which means you can't charge nor connect with the computer to backup numbers.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Kerplunq submitted this review of the BlackBerry Pearl 8130:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

This was the first smartphone that I jumped to. It was a huge upgrade from a previous phone that I owned. Over all, this phone has a lot of great options.

Pro's:
- Screen quality is great.
- Keyboard is easy to use, once you get a hang of it.
- Phone's OS is easy to operate.
- Love the zoom and the flash with the camera
- Comes in a few colors.
- Fits great in my hand.
- The BB email works great.

Con's:
- Memory likes to delete my inbox and call logs, whenever it feels like it.
- Trackball is a little too sensitive.
- Trackball got dirty quick, no way to really clean it.
- No WiFi :(
- A few issues with hotmail access.

I think its a great phone, and with time, they'll make better. I would encourage anyone looking at getting a smartphone, its a good place to start with!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

kyle022390 submitted this review of the BlackBerry Pearl 8130:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

As stated in my title, this is the first smartphone I have ever owned.

I have the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 on the U.S. Cellular network in the Des Moines area. I have it in the Amethyst color ... more like dark grey. I got it a few weeks ago and everything seems to be great so far.

The internet is very fast and the predictive text typing is very easy to get used to. At first I didn't have the patience to try to figure out predictive and was using the tap method. However it is very easy to figure out predictive and you will end up typing much faster.

I had been told by a friend with the original BB Pearl on T-Mobile that the camera wasn't the best because it's only 3 megapixels... It honestly isn't as bad as I pictured. It isn't high quality like a lot of camera phones out these days, but it serves it's purpose and has a great flash, I am satisfied with the camera.

I am unlike a lot of people in that I like my ringtones to be generic and professional sounding, and this phone comes with plenty of those types of tones for people like me. However, if you would like to put your own music on there as a ringtone that is very easy as well.

When I first got the phone I was unsure if I would like the light censor that dims the screen and lights up the keypad when you are in darker environments.. however it works VERY well and it is nice to be on the phone in the dark and not be blinded by a bright screen.

One complaint I have about the keypad in the dark is when it lights up it looks somewhat dingy.. It does not light up very clear and almost appears as if it is used or worn, I have seen this on other Pearls as well.

Another complaint about the pearl is flimsy casing, mainly with the battery cover ... I am aware this has been a common complaint but it seems they didn't try to fix it when updating the Pearl into the 8130.

Overall - a great phone! And a great first smartphone!!!! I think I'm hooked on BlackBerry!!!! :D

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

mementoMori submitted this review of the BlackBerry Pearl 8130:

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

The Pearl 8130 (I have Verizon) is my first smartphone. What attracted me to it was the reviews on how it handled email, the nice display, the fact that it was smaller than smartphones, and a desirable cost. All of the above are true. The pros:

-Handles email superbly. Manages my multiple personal accounts and my corporate imap account just fine. Absolutely no complaints.

Very nice display. Bright and colorful whether you're in the dark, in a flourescent bulb ridden office, or out in the sun at high noon

Small, sleek and sturdy

SureType keyboard walks a thin line between love and hate. The advantage is that it allows the phone to be smaller, and yet if you're good you could probably still type out an email or txt faster than on a full qwerty keyboard

Up to 8GB of memory with a microSD slot

All of those things are nice. But the longer I have the phone (had it about 5 months now), the more the cons become impossible to ignore

Cons:

Memory Leak. Definitely the worst of the cons. You want a blackberry so you can do email, messaging and have the utility of 3rd party apps. Well, good luck to you on keeping it all. Only 64mb of onboard RAM, most of which is used by the time it starts up. You also cant use an sd card for additional ram. I only have a few shortcut links and a weather app and I'm down to 10mbs. The worst part is, when it gets too low, it will without warning erase all txts and everything in your phone call log. Unbelievable. Tread carefully.

Too many apps will make it freeze

SureType keyboard can be horrendous at times, I often wish I had gotten a qwerty. Predicts the incorrect word A LOT, and is ungainly to edit wrong words

Trackball is either way too sensitive or too unresponsive for my tastes, and it just gets worse over time as dirt gets in there (pain to clean)

Drops calls a lot. I have Verizon, and I've lost calls with as many as 3 bars

My advice: Don't get a BB phone, if you do, make it a Curve. I am counting off the days til I can switch

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

It is a great phone everything works perfectly. But let me tell you something. You are better sacrificing your sprint tv and multimedia gizmos for an att or tmobile version. Basically not anything cdma. Because sprint crippled this phone. Sms limit 160, no mms? what is that junk. anyway the internet speed and reliability of this phone was just incredible. KEYBOARD FROM HEAVEN. but i gave it up because i didn't like what sprint did to it.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

ps2jnky submitted this review of the BlackBerry Pearl 8130:

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

When I first got the phone it was great. Fast internet browser (for a phone), great features and extra-ordinary organizational ability, great for people who have trouble remembering their entire schedule or just simply want to get more organized. After after around a month of use, you see the phones true flaws...

(In no particular order)
Pros:
-great at helping keeping life organized
-browser will play almost anything (including youtube) except flash images.
-suretype is great, even allows you to add words/slang you may use.
-adding quicklinks to your favorite places makes it quick and easy to get to ESPN, weather.com or others with simply one button.
-Auto on/off is awesome.

Cons:
-UNRELIABLE AT SENDING/RECEIVING MESSAGES!!! Numerous times I couldn't recieve texts when i had full antenna. also may only get a call for 1 ring, not enough time to answer it before it goes to voice mail.
-Battery Life Sucks, didn't use the phone all day except to check the time occasionally and the battery wouldn't last a day. Turns out if you delete all your messages constantly you can get it to last a 1.5 days w/o much use.
-Browser has gradually gotten slower and slower the longer I've had the phone.
-Sometimes websites will cause an error in the browser making it unviewable. But you can restart the phone and they'll work fine.
-Takes forever to power down.
-Numerous times the phone will freeze or run extremely slow, forcing you to restart it in order for it to work agian.
-Phone sound quality pretty poor.

Overall I'm very disappointed. I'm going to take it to Verizon tommorrow to see if I can get it fixed or a replacement, but its passed the 30days so I doubt anything will be done. Hopefully they will be kind and allow me to swap it out for another phone. I wouldn't recommend this phone unless your only using it for occasional/casual phone calls/texts and want it more as a daily planner. If your calls are important I suggest finding something else.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

yeahright submitted this review of the BlackBerry Pearl 8130:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I have to start by saying I hate suretype, that the is my biggest complaint about this phone, I thought I would get used to it,but I have not after months of use.I think I would probably be happier with the curve and a full keyboard despite the size difference.

Pros
Size, really small, fits in your pocket nice

Battery Life, even with a lot of web surfing, 3000 minutes a month and up to 50 emails a day the thing still makes it two to three days for me

Internet, speed on Verizon is great

Navigator, If you need GPS this is the best available on any network

Cons
Scroll wheel, that stupid little ball for navigation likes to have good and bad days, sometimes it just doesn't seem to respond

Suretype, personal preference but I hate It

Data Loss, instead of deleting my old emails and text if memory gets low it likes to clear my recent messages instead, I have had it clear an entire weeks email on me, but email from a month ago is still in there...very annoying

All in all if you want a PDA or Smartphone you cannot go wrong with a blackberry. They have their issues but for ease of use and dependability I would choose them first any day. If you are concerned mainly about size check out the pearl, but if you hate suretype like me go get the Curve

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
