User Review: Areas that need improvement

daveseventeen submitted this review of the Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900:

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

I am posting this in hopes of providing some constructive feedback toward the future design improvements of future versions of this model.

On the plus side, I must say that this phone has longevity. I purchased it new over two years ago. I still use it today. It has a good memory potential to store plenty of photos and videos. The batter seems to have excellent life.

Areas that need improvement are these:

1) Incredibly there is no time display available during a phone call in progress. I have numerous times had to hang up and check the time or ask the person on the line to tell me the time. This is very annoying.

2) Shutter lag. There is an incredible delay between pressing the shutter button on the camera, and the phone taking time to focus, and focus, and then snapping the photo. I have missed so many moving shots due to this. This has been a big disappointment.

3) There have been numerous occasions where an incoming call has gone straight to voice mail without ringing. Perhaps this is a common problem or something due to the carrier. However I never had this occur with previous phones with the same carrier in the same area.

4) In a weak signal area such as within the concrete building I work, the phone tends to shut off unbeknownst to me. Perhaps this is a modern feature to save on power. It did not happen in the same building with my old phone. It would be nice to have it give a signal before shutting down such as vibrate. There have been many times I was expecting a call only to find that my phone had already shut off on its own hours ago.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

davidgoe submitted this review of the Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900:

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

Hi,

I mostly conjurer with the previously stated PROs and CONs, so will simply add some CONs not previously stated:

1) The phone does not support Bluetooth OBEX for picture/video files. To be more precise, the phone supports it, but Verizon has disabled it to force you to use their silly upload service. You can also buy a USB cable or remove the microSD card to get photos off, but this is lame and in direct contradiction to what the salesman told me.

2) The caller ID line is in very small text on the relatively large display, with no way to use a larger font. As a result it's very hard to see who's calling without holding the phone to your face.

3) A very simple sliding mechanical lens cover would have been nice. I'm always terrified of having keys in my pocket at the same time and scratching the lens.

4) The web browser is sub-par. Specifically, when rendering pictures, it insists on rescaling pictures to the size of the screen, with no option to display it at 100% and just pan around the picture. This is annoying as the traffic map is so reduced it's useless.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The Flipshot is first of all an excellent phone and that's priority #1. The camera is really good but it is slow...BFD. Overall this is a sweet device and something different and appealing.
Highly recommended.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

allboutvzw submitted this review of the Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

Overall this was a nice addition to the Verizon lineup. The phone has never given me any problems, nice screen, call quality is amazing, and speakerphone is nice. The size of the phone is ok. Bluetooth works just fine, I love the living wallpaper. It’s a nice addition from Samsung, but I wish you had some other designs of the living wallpaper. I kind of got tired of the Film Strip. Durability is nice; it’s not a fragile phone. Application works nice on it and the V-cast is awesome.

Pros:
Camera and Video Camera is pretty nice (especially if you have a memory card in the phone), supports up to 4GB.
Bluetooth
Living Wallpaper
Outside touch MP3 controls
IM Services work great on the phone

Cons:
Camera has no Zoom feature, only the Camcorder
Can’t change the design of the living wallpaper
No Mobile TV still

Overall it’s a nice phone for its price, more of a Camera but that is why it’s called the FlipShot.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The only issue is that it does have a delay when taking vids and pics but other than that, it's one of the best phones I've had. Actually the battery could last a little longer... Thanks, and I hope this helps.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

raerae submitted this review of the Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I've had several phones in my life, but this one wins the battle.

Pros: Camera resolution is amazing. I have a memory card that I store my pictures on and print them out at Walmart. Can't even tell its from a phone and not a digital camera.
Offers an option to edit your pictures after you have taken them: B$W, sepia, green, blue, sketch, Emboss, Creamy etc. as well as frames, clip art, brightness, saturation of color, and so on and so on!
Sound quality is good. The touch MP3 buttons on the front can be locked. Speech to Text capability works well in quiet surroundings. Word function during text has "learned" the new words I have put in. Inbox holds in upwards of 150 messages (started out holding 50). Have gotten the phone wet twice in 2 months and still no problems with it.
Has a TV-out option to hook phone up to TV to view pictures and videos.

Cons: Delay in dialing numbers and taking pictures.

All in all this phone is everything I need and want and it's worth taking 3 more seconds to dial a number not in the phone book.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

drp2502 submitted this review of the Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900:

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

I am pleased with this phone. However I have had this phone for two months and find that the camera and video on this phone are difficult to operate. Another con is when I goto answer the phone and pull it out of my case it hangs up on whoever is calling me. I've tried everything I know to fix this problem. I now must wear a bluetooth to answer calls so I don't have to take out of my case. My pictures are no where near as good as on my lg voyager I had before this one. On the voyager its only problem was you can't hear the ring tones or ringers as loud as you can on the flip shot. I gave up on the voyager to get the flip-shot so I could get a better camera, and hear my ring tones better. I feel I can hear my ring tones better but the camera is not as good.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I used the camera on my old phone every day and this had, by far, the best camera features. I really love this phone. I don't have anything negative to say about it. The speakerphone is so clear, you can even twist the top and close the phone and still talk on speaker. The exterior does not scratch easily which is the only thing i was worried about. Overall this is by far the best phone verizon has to offer, that doesn't require you to pay extra a month for internet use.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

AlMccray submitted this review of the Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I have had this phone for about three weeks.

This is probably the best cell phone/ Camera I have ever owned. I am live on my phone about 4-6K minutes per month. I wish the video portion could record longer than 10 minutes at a time.

But I am on only going to comment of the bad things. I had to return my first phone when all the keys would not activate when I pressed them down to dial a number. Whether I was gentle or firm, some of the keys at different times would not work. It was not the same keys that malfunctioned, but many would. I kept the phone for two weeks to make sure that it was not me. Its a hassle going back and exchanging phones.

At the Verizon store, the rep asked me if I had a magnets case for my phone, of I carried magnets in my pockets. I said no. Why I asked? The rep said some thing about an advisory they received about the powerful camera systems and magnets. He said it affected keys some key functions.

So far the new camera's keys seem to be OK. But there still every now a then a key or two not activating when I press down.

I wish it was easier to dial a second or third number of the same person in your phone book without starting all over?

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

cell guy submitted this review of the Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

Let me first start by saying I have worked in the cell indusrty for 5yrs having sold every major company. I have never posted a review but I use this site religously and think it's about time to give a little back. After having this phone for a couple of months there hasn't been one problem at all. After researching the phone spite some negative feedback I still wanted to try it for myself. I don't have enough space to list all the phone ive owned over the years but ive had all types. Pound for pound its the best phone ive owned. The camera is amazing and the problem with taking a few seconds to take a pic is because of the auto focus. I experimented with it on and off and the pics were the same and are taken in half the time with it off. It's really only needed when a shot is close up. The ear piece quality is great and so is the speaker. Playing The music is also very clear and robust having dual speakers placed in a good position. The texting is smarter then from what ive read to the contrary. I have spelled many words for it that weren't in the phone and it remembers them in the future. Battery life for me easily last's 2 days with decent usage. And one of the biggest sellers for was the a2dp blue tooth. Which allows me to play music through a wirless head set. All in all the phone feels solid and is responsive and give's what is needed in a flip. The only cons are the directional key pad, which can be touchy for bigger fingers, but i got used to it. Also when scrolling through pics it does take a little bit for them to load. And even though the loaded ring tones are not many to chose from using a site like myxtertones.com will allow you to send tons of songs to be used for ring tones or text tones. Sorry for such a long review but I wanted to difuse some negativity surrounding the phone. I hope this helps you in your decision making and will atleast give it try.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

hopeg submitted this review of the Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900:

Overall rating: 2 (out of 5)

I liked this phone -- great sound quality and features. But, ultimately I ended up returning it because it was so slow.

As some other people have mentioned, the camera takes a while to actually take a photo, which I'm sure is fine if you're taking pictures of adults or objects, but I was using it to take pictures of my baby and my dog, and it was useless.

My other pet peeve was the clock. You have to press down on the button for a couple of seconds before it comes on. If you wear a watch and don't rely on your phone to tell you the time, I'm sure this won't bother you. But I use my phone as my clock, and the waiting drove me batty.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

tx_dbs_tx submitted this review of the Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900:

Overall rating: 2 (out of 5)

I read all the reviews here and decided to go ahead and try out the Samsung FlipShot. First of all this phone is a big turd! If you want a great multimedia cell phone then don't dare buy this phone! The other reviews stating this phone is slow slow slow ARE TRUE!!! I text frequently and this phones processor is SUPER slow to say the least. It can't keep up with my finger taps using the old Abc input method. And no I don't have fat fingers or mis-type or press wrong buttons. Also the menu system is super slow to respond. Browsing through pics is super slow. opening your sounds folder is slow as well. The preinstalled ringtones are cheesy there's mabe 7 0r 8. I tried to send small mp3 sound files in picture messages to myself and other friends's phones, but I keep getting a " unsupported file content" warning message! My VX8700 on the other hand simply rocks! It does this and a whole lot more. Also if you like playing videos on your phone then you will be very dissappointed because this phone will not play the typical mp4 video files, it will only play 3gp video files at the low quality 15 fps. I know this is a big let down for me and must be a Samsung thing as other phones do play mp4 videos. If you like texting your user created mp3 ringtones to yourself and then saving the recieved file as a ringtone then don't buy this phone! It will not work as I mentioned above. I can't say much of anything good about this phone except the camera pic quality is very good for a phone. Read all the other reviews as they are true to the negative points on this phone. I used this phone for 2 days and I had enough and swapped my esn back to my LG VX8700. If you want a great, fast performing multimedia phone then you will not find a better phone than the VX8700, trust me I have tried them all. I'm going to either trash can or give away this Samsung FlipShot to some sucker who thinks it's a good phone. I wouldn't want it even if it was free unless I had no other phone to use at all.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

gsa625 submitted this review of the Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900:

Overall rating: 1.5 (out of 5)

Most of the pictures I transferred from my razr will only display grainy patterns of dots, unless I go into mypix on the phone and view each picture individually ... the ones I associates with a contact don't display when that person calls.

Other users have mentioned issues with texting, and I concur. There is a delay or sync issue or something - I have never had to deal with so many apparent typos or skipped letters.

Taking pictures is a pain. Once in a great while I can flip the phone and actually take a picture. Normally nothing happens. If I open the phone, so it looks like a 'V', and aim it right and press OK, I can take a picture every time.

I have yet to find a set of instructions for the settings panel on the screen of the phone.

Shouldn't this stuff be at least a little bit intuitive???

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

martysienna submitted this review of the Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900:

Overall rating: 3.5 (out of 5)

Finally the flat razor style keypad has improved. This is a little wider. But still very difficult to text compared to individual buttons. Especially for serious and 1 handed texters. PS, the 1st version of the 3 megapix 990 did have individual buttons. Bigger texting problem is the flip and the juke learn punctuation. Which sounds like a plus. But actually you never know what punctuation you're going to get. Impossible to predict. And living wall paper on this phone is barely alive. Way better on the lg 8700 for example. And agree with most that the pause is too long when taking a pic.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

marisphen submitted this review of the Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I got tired of my Motorola Z6tv and gave this one a shot. Overall I like it. I went to Best Buy and got the red one so the color is great. I have access to pretty much everything I need like email, ESPN MVP and the web. I am a little unsure about why this phone is so expensive but that is another issue. The call quality seems to be good and loud. Samsung allows you to change the themes of the phone something my Motorola did not do. Overall, I like it. If you want a kinda basic phone with access to some higher end features try it out. In addition, I know the major draw of this phone is the camera which is cool but I don't really use it. It's nice to have a high quality camera on phone though.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

(this one is the worst for me.)

Overall though this is a quaility phone and would reccomend it ti anyone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

harrisongibb submitted this review of the Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

In all, this is a great phone. It's a little boxy and bulky for me, but it's worth it for what you get...which is a great camera. This thing is wonderful. Takes wonderful pictures with plenty of resolution and effect options.
Of course, if you are looking for a phone mostly for playing mp3s or playing games, there are more appropriate phones out there. It isn't even the best text messaging phone, either. But you can do all these things on the Flipshot, and still take better pics than other camera phone.
It is perfect for me...someone who was looking for a phone to talk occasionally, text from time to time, but take plenty of pictures.
My biggest gripe so far has to be Verizon's accessory support for this phone. It's difficult to get any VZW store to cooperate because they don't carry it yet, and even the folks at central customer service are clueless when it comes to certain options.
But when it comes down to it, this phone is definitely worth the money.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

yrusse1 submitted this review of the Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I have had my sexy red Flipshot for almost a week now...my last phone was the LG V or as I called it 'The Brick'. I'm a 20 something who only uses my phone for the basics...calls and texts (I can't comment on Bluetooth or the music player because I don't use them).

Pros:
*Coming from a big bulky phone this thing is LIGHT!
*Pictures come out amazing for a camera phone (some neat editing features)
*Keypad is flat, but has ridges separating each key
*The flash can actually be used as a flashlight when the phone is closed
*Speaker phone is loud and clear...people have told me they can't tell that I have them on speaker
*Clear calls
*Speaker works when the phone closed
*Rings very loud
*Can set sounds as ringtones as long as you text them to yourself
*Battery life has been pretty good (really haven't seen how long it can go without charging)
*Has Voice entry for texts
*Living Wallpaper is a cool idea, though I am not a fan of the actual camera theme on the phone.
*Navigation keys can be customized
*Cute/Quirky dial fonts and keypad sounds
*My old phone would only store 50 messages in the inbox and the sent folder...I don't know if there is a limit on this phone, but I'm around 80 messages for both the inbox and the sent folder

Cons:
*I have small hands...it's a little awkward to hold for me, but I'm getting used to it.
*Can't learn/add words to the dictionary
*You have to hold one of the buttons on the side to see the time when the flip is closed
*Vibrate could be a bit stronger
*Can't set different text sounds for different contacts
*Can't set volume settings from any of the side keys when the flip is closed

All in all I am more than happy with this phone. This may not be the phone for someone who wants their phone to serve as a mini computer, but it does everything and a little bit more for the basic phone user.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

kebict submitted this review of the Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900:

Overall rating: 1.5 (out of 5)

Pros: Price, looks, build, lighted keypad, good function and features with a phone and a camera, awesome quality pictures (if they don't move), ear piece volume is good, internal screen is nice and bright and clear.

Cons: speakers are right where you hold the phone, if you use speaker phone and you close the flip you don't end the call, you must press end when using the speaker phone, the phone is VERY VERY VERY slow, the menus are slow the keypad is slow, everything is slow, the camera has a 3-4 sec. delay once you press (take) to when it does actually take a picture. The rings are terrible and there's only about 8 of them... the vibe is "so-so".

I wanted this phone for good phone features, and thought it'd make a nice camera since I'm always forgetting my digital camera at home, and a camera with a flash....BUT, do to the fact everything about this phone is slow slow slow it's being returned today. I like all the features and concepts, build, etc, but I can't STAND the slowness. Hi hopes were crushed... I'll be looking at a LG VX8700 or the Moto Max.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Zorin submitted this review of the Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I got this phone last week. Going to lay out the +/- on this phone. I hope it helps.

Pros:
Strong, sturdy build to the phone.

Love the lit keys, and their width is great for txting.

Screen clarity is top notch.

Battery life has been very good. On the phonescoop.com it says 4hrs, but on verizon.com it says 3 hours, so we shall see.

Backup protection was quick to install and it's just like a sim card and free if you have your account online. Backup protection is by far one of the best (free) features Verizon has done in years, of course, when it is available for to your phone.

Cons:
Even though the camera is 3 mega-pixel, it is slow to the punch. If your taking a pic of a non-moving object, you're okay. If you're taking a pic of your pals you will have to tell them not to move for 2-3. If your taking a picture of your kid or pet, just hope you get the shot off b4 they move.

If you hold the button too long to capture a photo, it switches to the camcorder feature, which you will then have to delete the footage you recorded, start over and capture another memory with the camera option.

You know how you tap a side key and you can get the time. This phone you have hold the button on the side down for 2 seconds. I know, seems lame, but when u want the time and you have to hold a small button down, it can get annoying, so you can open each time you want the time. On the flipside, the good thing about this, when the screen is dark, the music functions can't be accessed. Again, I get what they wanted for this part, just wish you could see the time quicker.

Ringers are crap and they include 8, (3 of which are bells). I know this is typical from Verizon, but my wife got the LG5400 and it actually has some phat ring tones.

Doesn't offer a variety of long and short pulses for vibrate, just a straight, short buzz.

Bottom line...just wish the functionality of the 3MP camera was faster. The delays in this are a huge problem and might lead me to a return.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
