ncap9022 submitted this review of the Sony Ericsson W580 / S500:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

Had this phone in pink and it was so pretty. I really loved the features- especially the step counter! I never realized how much I walk in a day. Internet wasn't great but it is a small screen and not really made for internet. The radio and music had good quality. Overall the phone was one of my favorites I've had.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

trubelle submitted this review of the Sony Ericsson W580 / S500:

Overall rating: 3.5 (out of 5)

I've had this phone for a little over a year now and should warn you to keep in mind that I am extremely rough on my phones, dropping them a couple times a day because I'm extremely clumsy..

Cons:
Battery cover & memory card slot extremely difficult to get into or close once open
When you assign a ringtone to a contact, it doesn't function as their text tone as well (pro or con depending on how you prefer it)
Once it's been dropped a few times, the slide becomes extremely loose and the person you're on the phone with can hear every little movement your phone makes
You can't use the mp3s in your music player as a ringtone
The headphone jack is the same as the charger plug, meaning you have to use an adapter that comes with the phone to plug your headphones into, making for a long tangley mess of cord when using it as an mp3 player
The face buttons on the outside are extremely loose and I'm afraid they'll fall off any day now
I had to buy an extra memory card for music because it wouldn't hold hardly anything
You can set the light effects when somebody calls, but they don't actually work the way you set them to
Mine sometimes just randomly starts vibrating for about 10 seconds then stops
Screen is way too bright
Normally, when I get a new text message a little screen will pop up saying there's a new message and will take me straight to the message, but my phone sometimes throws a little fit and won't show this screen for a couple days
Not the best mp3 player, but it's a phone, not a music player
Not the most comfortable to hold while texting

Pros:
You can set your music from your music player as a text tone and it will only play a few seconds from that song so it doesn't go on forever annoying everybody
You can change the size of the time so it's easier to read
There's a step counter and "fitness program" free
Lots of different themes
Good camera for the most part
I LOVE the alarm on it
Most of the phone is a pro, I'm just tired of it so I'm really nitpicky.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

rcflyer91 submitted this review of the Sony Ericsson W580 / S500:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

Pros : The phone plays Music
Cons : Everything else.

I bought 3 of these phones less than a year ago for myself and family. The buttons won't lock (no setting will lock them) they spontaneously go to the Internet. (LOTS of extra charges)
I have had to reload the software in each of them at least 3 times each (they tend to turn themselves off frequently). One died a few months ago, sent it in for repair (3 Weeks, no phone) Less than a week later, DEAD AGAIN! Sent it back in again for repair. Today, my phone crashed trying to reload the software as Sony Ericsson’s website recommended. Won’t power up, fails to reload software. Now I have 2 phones dead and out for repair. Contacted Sony to ask if they could send out a replacement phone right away since now 66% of my phones are dead and in the process of Sony Attempting to repair them. They politely said no. Basically informed me that they will continue to require me to send them in at my expense for repair attempts but on the bright side, each time I send them in, my warranty is extended for an additional 90 days! As a bonus, they promised to send me a replacement refurbished phone after every third repair. (I’m guessing they refurbish them almost as well as they repair them)
On a bright note, I think the post office is going to offer a Sony Ericsson postage stamp for all the business they are getting having phones sent in for repair.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Milady submitted this review of the Sony Ericsson W580 / S500:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I've had this phone for over 1 year now, here's my take:

Pros:
Excellent T9
Great lock feature
Loud ring
Clear calls
Exellent, intuitive user interface
Good daylight camera
Sturdy design
Fun music player
Very customizable themes
Customizable lighting effects

Cons:
No camera flash
Internet button on outside of phone, randomly connects in pocket if phone isn't locked

This is by far the best phone I've had in all my years of owning mid-range cell phones. I only have a few gripes with it, including the lack of flash for the camera and the poorly placed internet button (which isn't a problem at all if you just make sure your phone is locked).

Many impressive things in this phone. The operating system is fast and smooth, and I've had minimal to no glitch problems. Calls are always clear, I haven't dropped one yet and I live in a very rural area w/ AT&T. FM radio is impressive to say the least, I love it. And I've taken some AMAZING pictures with this phone, during the day in the outdoors is where this phone's camera really shines. That, and this phone just looks really cool. I've gotten countless compliments on this phone, even now with it being a slightly older model.

I've seen a lot of reviews talking about cracking buttons, but I have NEVER had this problem, and I have had this phone for quite a long time. My buttons are all still intact.

Also, on the note of durability, I've dropped this phone numerous times from 4+ feet onto concrete, and the worst that has happened has been the battery flying out. Absolutely no permanent damage to the phone whatsoever. It's quite a durable, sturdy phone!

If you're looking for a phone that will get things done with a bell and a whistle here and there, you can't go wrong with the w580i.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

snapessister submitted this review of the Sony Ericsson W580 / S500:

Overall rating: 0 (out of 5)

When I use a phone, I want it to be simple and fast to use. This phone does not cut the mustard for me.

With a sweep of a movement, you can send the phone into web search without meaning to - it sits in my pocket and an hour later, when I take it out, I have racked up thousands of KB unintentionally! And I don't use it for web access, so my bill is inclusive of costs. The lock is not adequate, so turning it off is my only solution.

The only thing I really like is the music part - awesome!

Now, I have had this phone for only 8 months, and the screen went all fuzzy on me and scrolls constantly, splitting the screen as well. I just requested a replacement from ATT. I hope to get rid of the new one and buy another Nokia (of which I own three previous, and they have never died like the Sony). And they are old..... relics actually. As much as Sony rocks on the music, tech sucks.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

km982 submitted this review of the Sony Ericsson W580 / S500:

Overall rating: 2 (out of 5)

I bought the phone originally has an upgrade from a Motorola RZR because I wanted something different and a bit of a change, big mistake. When it is coming straight out of the box it is amazing and you stay entertained as you learn what the phone can and cannot do. Unfortunately, after having it only for a few months the sound died in it and the ringtones were disorted so I had another sent to me and a few months after that the keys began to fall off, it does not close, and freezes constantly. After calling my provider it was agreed that I could get another brand of phone so I am going back to the RZR.

Pros:
Closes
Looks good

Cons:
Keys fall off
Freezes
Not worth the amount paid for
Sound dies

Just save yourself money and get another brand of phone, you will wind up having to pay more money in the end to get it to work right and/or replace it.

Sony needs to stick with electronics.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The keys were cracking easily, and the slider started to ware out. One day I was walking up the street and texting my friends, a kid that lives close to me threw a snowball at me and it broke the screen, when i went into the at&t store to see if they could do anything all they did was try to get me to buy a phone for the "no commitment pricing" because i had just renewed my contract. But the phone does have some really cool features too, like all of the media and such, But overall I would not recommend getting the phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

lady_tracy submitted this review of the Sony Ericsson W580 / S500:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I change cell phones like crazy - if I'm not happy with a phone, it goes back to the dealer immediately...I've done this quite often with everything from Nokia to Motorola, but this phone is a definite keeper.

I decided on this phone and have had it for about 3 weeks. It's my first Sony Ericsson purchase, and I'm really in love with it. The graphics are PHENOMENAL! I can't believe how crystal clear and vivid the screen is, even in bright sunlight. I was amazed at the fact that I could see the screen outside on a bright sunny day so perfectly. That's a first for me as well.

The reception is excellent - like talking on a land line, and whoever I'm conversing with has replied that the call quality is wonderful, but I think a lot of that has to do with your service provider (you can't beat AT&T). I've had no problems whatsoever with cracked keys, and I've done quite a bit of texting since I purchased it. The keypad in my opinion feels very sturdy. I just wish the buttons were a bit larger. Small price to pay for an otherwise wonderful product.

The slide feature is also very sturdy, but not to the point that it feels as if it sticks, which was a problem I had with a slide phone I previously owned. The phone also takes excellent pictures! Much better than any other phone I've had in the past.

The Walkman is a plus for a music fanatic (like me), and the fact that you can shake the phone to forward to the next track is pretty neat. I also like the programmable colored lights. Just another cool and fun feature.

Overall, this phone has proven itself in a very short time to be extremely dependable, with excellent sound quality, great construction, and lots of fun extras. I highly recommend this phone. I think because of it's small size, it's really more of a ladies phone (just my opinion), so yeah girls, be like me & get it in pink - LOL! Final opinion: buy it, if for no other reason than you want a good, reliable phone at a great price.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

kchap1 submitted this review of the Sony Ericsson W580 / S500:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

The Sony Ericsson w580i by AT&T offers Bluetooth 2.0 (a2dp Compatible) with a 2mp camera. The built in FM Radio and MP3 player with shake control makes it easy to listen to music on the run. The volume of the built in loud speaker literally delivers high quality sound that rivals most boom boxes. The a2dp Bluetooth 2.0 makes it easy to pare your Bluetooth stereo headset quickly and easily. Transferring files such as photos, ringtones, themes and games is made easy using a PC and either the Bluetooth, or the included USB cable. The slide function is one of my personal favorites that makes it easy to answer phone calls with just one hand. On the down side the w580i doesn’t allow for the use of the wired headset, and charging of the phone at the same time.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The buttons crack and it break very easily. i had to trade mine in within the first 10 days. i was very disappointed with the making of this phone. I wouldn't recommend this phone to anyone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

frasco submitted this review of the Sony Ericsson W580 / S500:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I purchased a used W580 in August 2007, and it has just recently started to wear down. Last month the buttons on the faceplate started to dwindle in reaction time, but between its purchase and then, this has only been the best phone I've ever owned.

Cons:
-Buttons on faceplate wear down. Don't know how big an issue this might be with other phones.
-OS on phone not COMPLETELY comprehensive. Can't delete included ringtones.
-Included earphones make it the most impossible-to-hold mp3 player imaginable.
-Poorly thought-out placement of internet button. I've accidentally opened up its browser so many times.

Pros:
-Easy to handle. Phone stays in your hand when you want it, drops out when you don't. I've dropped this phone once, and I'm an utter klutz. Its skinny business card-size fits right in my hand, is unnoticeable in my pocket, but not so small it'll fall out.
-Wide volume range. When the volume's on 1, it's quiet, but if you want it loud, it'll get loud. Nice if you want your own theme song emanating from your pocket.
-Ridiculous cornucopia of applications. Sound recorder, pedometer, alarms, calendar - I've used them all at length; great for organization.
-MP3 Player. I want to make this distinction: it doesn't just "play mp3s," it's a full-function mp3 player, and the dual states of the phone impede on one another minimally.

All in all, I've had a very good experience with this phone. I think when I get my next one, it'll be more of the same.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

kaptainkaty submitted this review of the Sony Ericsson W580 / S500:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

This was an upgrade, and by far, my favorite phone. I'm always looking for what's new and this phone has EVERYTHING- you'll never be bored.

-Bright display and a great camera had me taking pictures constantly, especially since the phone came with a nice sized memory card.
-for people that text a lot, it is very easy to get used to, and sliding the phone shut or exiting "sending message" etc, doesn't abort the message.
-the fitness application is AMAZING, you can customize it to even see how many calories you burn while walking or running, it counts steps, and even has goals you can reach if you want.
-the mp3 player is great and it also comes with earphones and a USB cord so listening to music is great. nice sound overall on the phone.

overall, if your a multitasker, this IS the phone for you.
Sadly on this walkman phone, the buttons do crack if you text a lot. also, my first 580i (of 3) had a temporary problem where some of the buttons didn't work and eventually where one of the buttons became almost jammed, so it was impossible to text and make calls or anything so i sent it in for a new one.

if you have at&t, they will replace your phone with a REFURBISHED phone, so technically you never get the same experience again. my replacement phone's screen went out completely the second day i had it, so i sent it in for my third 580i, and ultimately that phone had a temporary problem with sending messages.
i would NOT recommend buying a refurbished phone of this model. some of the downsides of this phone were:

-it felt like it was made cheap (didn't really bother me, but it isn't a sturdy phone if you're a heavy duty person.)
-changing your playlist or adding new songs was a little difficult for me.
-new messages don't always pop up on the screen if you're using it, but there isn't a feature in the settings dealing with this.
-this phone had many random glitches for me.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

It was seriously a kool fone without all the technical and friend difficulties, and I feel horrible and guilty because my mom was so proud she bought it for me and, well, I'm in the process of paying her back. It was a bittersweet experience...

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

tdonily submitted this review of the Sony Ericsson W580 / S500:

Overall rating: 2 (out of 5)

This being my second S/E phone I have had in the past 3 years, I should have seen it coming when I had to start the warranty exchange process after a month.

Enough tho, pros of this phone:

-Call quality was good. Both in audio and reception.
-Decent screen (when it worked).

Cons:

-As mentioned elsewhere, the buttons are pretty much a joke.
-The handset microphone picks up so much background noise that it's difficult for the person on the other end of the line to hear if you are in a noisy environment.
-Overall phone quality lacks.

As mentioned above, I had to warranty exchange this phone twice, and upgraded when the third handset died. The reasoning for these exchanges were the microphone went out on the first handset (new phone), the loud speaker went out on the second (refurb), and the screen went out on my last (also a refurb). Initially, the phone looks sharp, but it doesn't take long to realize just how cheaply it had been made. My older W600i was a better quality phone, in my opinion. It died when due to a software failure, but I never had to exchange it. Sorry to Sony, but their name no longer stands up to the quality they used to be known.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
