sportmodel submitted this review of the BlackBerry 8830:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I work in the wireless industry, and get to play with MANY, MANY phones. I chose the 8830 as my work phone, and I LOVE this phone. It's amazing the sound quality of this phone. I frequently use Pandora while listening to music in the car. I rarely use my radio any more.
The keyboard is small, but works great. I rarely push the wrong key while texting. SMS texting as well as composing emails is easy as pie. The 8830 is a bit bigger than the 8330 Curve, and a bit heavier. The construction of the phone is solid and feels solid in hand.
On the flip side, I do miss having a camera on the phone. Other than a software issue early on causing repeated freezes, this phone works flawlessly for me.
I plan on keeping this phone for many years to come (or at least until a worthy successor come along)

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Tattooedmunky submitted this review of the BlackBerry 8830:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I am a hard-core Blackberry business user and the 8830 is probably the best piece of equipment I've ever (or will ever) have. I carried my 8830 daily, through rain, sleet and snow (no, I'm not a mailman), across the ocean and back and it never let me down. Probably one of the saddest days of my life was when my company switched over from the 8830 to the Storm.
With a perfect display size, a QWERTY keyboard that is easy on the fingers (and the eyes), this is a great phone for anyone sending lots of emails or texts. Phone calls are darn-near land line quality, even in remote locations. If this phone had a camera, I have no doubt it would have continued to dominate today's phone-geek market.
RIM has made some deviations recently, but tne 8830 was such a solid performer, it's no coincidence the Tour, Curve and Bold are shockingly similar to the 8830.
The phone is heavy, but it's a solid, dependable tool. If you're considering this as a purchase, go for it.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

jdcbomb submitted this review of the BlackBerry 8830:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I received this phone back in Oct '08 from my company. It is on the Verizon Wireless network, which, according to the great majority of surveys, and my own personal experience over the past 8 years of having my own phone, has the best overall data and voice network in the entire country.

In the past, I've seen Blackberry phones not perform very well during phone calls, but this phone has a rock solid voice quality on both ends, and I have yet to drop a single phone call.

The strongest feature this device has is indeed the Blackberry e-mail system, which still dominates all other competing e-mail functions from other manufacturers (Palm, Apple, etc.). The push e-mail service, as implemented on an business enterprise server, is instant, and in most cases faster than my own desktop at work.

The display is bright, colorful, sharp, and responsive to every input, making reading and composing e-mails incredibly easy, fast, and actually addictive. It is really nice to see how the screen responds to ambient lighting by increasing or decreasing its brightness.

Some have complained about the keyboard being too scrunched together, but for my use, the tactile response is frankly better than even the raved about virtual keyboard on the iPhone.

The built-in browser functionality is certainly inferior to other devices, such as the iPhone, but is only a minor issue, since I use this phone for e-mail and voice calls.
However, after installing the Mini Opera browser, I am feeling a lot more comfortable browsing on the 8830.

Many will complain that there is no camera/video features on this Blackberry, but I'd rather take pictures using a real digital camera. Will RIM come out with a camera version of this? The Storm does not count.

The ability to have separate, easy to read, boxes for my Yahoo, Gmail, and even SMS (text), is very impressive.

This phone has increased my productivity, organized my life, and given me the ability to stay in touch with whoever and however I wish.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

rchmny submitted this review of the BlackBerry 8830:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

If you have never owned a BB or was afraid to get one, have no fear since this model wont hurt you.

I have had my fair share of BB going all the way from the 6750 with the easy to break scroll wheel(remember that, you old BB users?) to the innovation of a color display on a 7250. Those were made to discourage the average user to purchase one. The 8830 on the other hand, was not made to do that.

I like this model for the simple reasons,

1. Easy to hold (great for those with larger hands)
2. Easy to see color display and hand placement for the trackball.
3. World edition so when I leave the states, I have the ability to roam.
4. Decent multimedia player

Now here's what I don't like about it

1. Low ringer (software rumors didn't help this problem)
2. No video output and selective video formats are allowed to be watched.
3. No picture messaging (per VZW)

Other than that, I would endorse this phone

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Xboxfanatik submitted this review of the BlackBerry 8830:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I have been a Verizon customer for 3 years now, previously with sprint and tmobile. I am all about trying new things and I decided to try the Blackberry 8830. I was a little upset that the unlimited data package costs 30 dollars per month and it is mandatory but the salesrep at the store made alot of sense in explaining why this was necessary. The anaology he used was "you wouldn't go to a car dealership and ask for a Corvette with a 4 cylinder engine would you? It would make no sense." He then said what is the sense in having the blackberry if you aren't going to use the features this powerhouse of a phone is designed to do?

I had never used internet or email on a phone before but I do email alot on a computer. So i decided to try it out and set up my email on the phone. holy cow it works so well!! my emails come in very fast and the text is so easy to read on the screen. It took me a while to learn the functions and menus of the phone but now that I have it's like second nature. I bought the Red version and it is absolutely an awesome looking phone. I have never dropped a call or had signal problems, I mean after all I'm with Verizon so that's a no brainer.

Pro's:
Great productivity phone
Reliable internet and email system (no push)
Great calender and memo pad
Bluetooth works flawlessly
media center for music and videos with memory card option
Phenomenal keyboard
Fast text messaging i average 10k a month
excellent reception and battery life
come with a nice carrying pouch

Cons:
no camera (oh well I never take pictures
anyway)

overall, this is absolutely an amazing phone and I will never go back to a regular phone again. Blackberry has a solid product

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

dtdt submitted this review of the BlackBerry 8830:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

Overall, in the past 18 months, I've enjoyed the 8830. My single biggest complaint has to be the over-sensitive microphone. For what this device is, primarily an e-mail delivery device, it excels. The phone leaves a lot to be desired, especially compared to the sound quality of most regular phones, and hopefully RIM will improve this in future models.

Don't buy this phone if you want to use it primarily for browsing the web. Very slow. Then again, so is the new iPhone...

Let's just presume that smartphones are still in the growth phase, not yet at the mature phases of product life cycle. A 2010 Blackberry is going to blow away one of today's models; keyboards may be obsolete by then, for all anyone can be sure.

Anyway, as an e-mail device; excellent. If that is your top priority with a smartphone, this is your device.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Manny_101 submitted this review of the BlackBerry 8830:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

After reading most of the posts here, I had to put my 2 cents in here. I'm sorry but no BlackBerry compares to a Treo. Especially Treo's that run on MS. Unfortunately, my company made me switch to the 8830 and I've hated it since the first day. Here are a few of the worst things on this device:

The location of the voice activated button is completely wrong.

Any website that has a little more than the average content takes over 3 mins to load.

When in any website, the trackball sticks at no matter what sensitivity level it's set too.

The device won't play any type of videos off the web.

You have to physically sync to a PC in order to upload music to it.

The icons on the home screen make it look like it's a toy for 3 yr olds.

MS files, like Excel, Word, Powerpoint won't run on the device.

Anywho....my list goes on and on. If you haven't used a Treo, try it. You'll love it.

Sorry BlackBerry but your products are lame.

Anywho......

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

jbizzle submitted this review of the BlackBerry 8830:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

Just to clear this up, I LOVED the functionality of the phone and also liked the size (thin!) of the phone as well. Unfortunately for me, I went through 5 of these phones (for various reasons) before Verizon finally gave me a free upgrade to a Curve (8330).

Pros:
Size
Screen Resolution
Email
Keyboard

Cons:
No Camera
Browser is not on par with rest of phones functionality (only basic websites displayed well)
Microphone is awful (if I had a nickel for every time someone couldn't hear me, I'd be a very rich man. Had to use a bluetooth headset to make calls that had any importance.)
Keys are hard to distinguish during daylight on silver version. Red version was much easier to see during same conditions.
Low flash memory (50% less than Curve)
Phone tended to run slow after a few weeks of owning it
Trackball broke (and was replaced under warranty) 4 times while I owned this! 5th return was due to speaker not functioning properly.
Volume is very low on speaker and ringer

Regardless of the number of cons listed here, I actually enjoyed having the phone, but was turned off by the amount of time I lost having it replaced at the Verizon store. Durability was a MAJOR questionmark that I did not see mentioned anywhere on the net.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

kenko submitted this review of the BlackBerry 8830:

Overall rating: 1.5 (out of 5)

I have been very dissapointed with this phone overall. The buttons are very small and slippery with no space in between, and make typing difficult. I typically have rather nimble thumbs, but with this phone sending short messages is a bear and never mind long e-mails. Those are nearly impossible! The track ball also seems to stick, has a slippery surface (especially if your hands are just a bit sweaty), and makes it difficult to navigate. I would rather have a 4-direction pad for navigation. There are some nice features that are somewhat standard with Blackberries such as e-mail integration. But what good are such features when the hardware stinks! Another issue is that the paint is starting to rub off of the keys after just around 50 days of use. This is probably because I am used to a flip phone and keep it in my pocket. After a year I am afraid that I won't be able to read the keys... My biggest gripe is the horrible user interface. It is very unfriendly and unattractive. Whoever designed the interface for this phone should be ashamed. It seems like I need to go thought 2 or 3 more steps than with my old phone to get where I want to go. My wife just got a mid-level Sprint phone and the user interface blows this phone away. Another pet pieve of mine is the lack of a camera. I primarliy used my camera previously for work (to document issues at customers). Without a camera phone, I have to bring a camera with me all the time now. The only plus I have found with this phone is that it works well overseas with the international SIM card and it seems to get pretty good reception. Overall, I really wish I could return it and get something else. I'm dreading the next 2 years that I will be stuck with this phone. Don't make my mistake. Get something else.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Icarusjoy submitted this review of the BlackBerry 8830:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

Six months ago I got Sprint's TREO 755P. It was far more stable than my older 700P and I thought I was done looking; until my company switched carriers to Verizon. Since they still did not carry the 755P, I "settled" for the XV6800, a fairly new model. I hated it. It was flimsy, not eye friendly, near impossible to work with one hand, and a learning curve akin to doing an oil change on the Space Shuttle.
And along came the Blackberry 8830. Not only has it met or exceeded my expectation and the functionality of my old TREO 755p, but in some ways has really calibrated my thinking as to what a smart phone is "supposed" to be good at.
This is pro-device, no doubt about that. From its sleek chrome sides and flat profile, to the way it feels on your hands it screams of class, stellar quality and flawless manufacturing.
PROS:
* Perfect weight, balance, look, design and construction.
* A amazing feel on the keyboard, just like the 755P (which I consider the best). My fingers had it down in a day. The trackball takes an hour to get it right.
* The reception and signal levels are as good or better than both the 755 and 6800. No dropped calls in 2 weeks.
* Every email setup wizard should be like this.
* The operating system is amazing. Nice icons, the trackball does take a bit to get used to but it comes to feel natural in a few days, if not hours.
CONS:
* No camera, no problem. The missing camera just makes it what I want, a phone-contact-texting-calendar-email powerhouse.
* The OS does take getting used to from Palm. I found Palm had more bells and whistles, but did none of them spectacularly. This one does a few less things, but all of them to perfection.
* The browser is less-than, but a download of mini-opera 4.0 had me in heaven.

You want fluff and whistles, go the route of the other devices. This is a device for those of us who need stability, reliably, speed;... not to mention not looking like you have a tumor when you put it in your pocket. Perfect.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

cwcanty submitted this review of the BlackBerry 8830:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

Ok, so I truly believe that BB currently makes the best smartphones and this device is certainly a winner! I have enjoyed using it for the past 4 months and its by far the best Blackberry that verizon has ever released. This device has saved me countless hours and has made me so much more efficient in both my professional and personal life. Overall this is a pretty darn good phone, but of course it's not without its flaws. If you're looking for a great phone, with pda/smartphone capabilities and instant push email--look no further!

PROS:
Great professional look (I get compliments all the time!)

Keyboard is a little weird at first, but once you get used to it, its fantastic to use. I actually like it a little better than the keyboard on the curve.

Stable OS that rarely crashes or has to do hard resets (don't even get me started about issues I have experienced with Palm products)

Push email is great to have and RIM has mastered the process.

Call quality is pretty good when the earpiece is in the exact right spot, but fluctuates if you move the phone around your ear.

Using the center control pad is much better when compared with the scroll wheel.

Calendar is pretty functional and easy to use.

Phone gets fantastic reception!

CONS:
Ringers are very quiet, but I just try to utilize vibrate more often.

Cases is nice, but scratches very easily.

Speakerphone isn't really that great, but its usable in a pinch.

Web browser is pretty pathetic and needs to be improved on future BB's

Tough for other callers to hear when you are talking in an area with background noise.

Vibrate is a little weak when compared with some of the old school blackberries.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

RedBerry8830 submitted this review of the BlackBerry 8830:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

As soon as the Red 8830 came out in Verizon stores, I grabbed it. I had a Moto Q which was my first smartphone, and I really enjoyed it. However, this phone is a step above. First of all, appearance wise, the Red color is really cool and the keys and trackball look great lit up. But now on to the performance...

PROS
- The battery life blows my mind. I don't even need a car charger or charger at work. This thing lasts all day long.
- The QWERTY keys feel great, and are easy to use. It's easy inserting symbols, and I love the fact that when you hold down a key, it capitalizes that letter. This saves a lot of time if you text and email as much as I do.
- Emails arrive in a flash. My office doesn't use a Blackberry server, but using BB's Internet service, I get emails sometimes before they appear in my desktop's MS Outlook.
- Great speakerphone, and great phone call quality.
- The blackberry function key. It's very intuitive, and no matter what application you're in, it gives you the options you're looking for.
- The sleep key on top of the phone is a quick, easy way of locking the keyboard.
- I love the indicator light, which flashes different colors, depending on what the Blackberry is trying to alert you to (new message, low battery, etc.)
- The Brick Breaker game. It's absolutely addicting.
- Lastly, it's just very easy to navigate through all the different applications. It hasn't frozen on me yet, and it just runs very well. The Q was a decent phone, but it tended to freeze on me when I was doing too many things in succession.

CONS
- Camera. I do miss the camera, but it's a small price to pay for everything else this has. But it's easy to upload pictures using a Micro SD card, and a camera on a phone can complicate things for some professionals.
- The BB Internet Browser was pretty disappointing at first, but I downloaded the Mini Opera browser, and it blows away Mobile IE. I can go to just about any page.

That's it... I highly recommend the 8830

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

keetlebug submitted this review of the BlackBerry 8830:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I went through 5 different treos with nothing but headaches 700w,700p,700wv. After my 5th I went back to verizon greeted by a mgr who by now spoke to me on a first name basis. I traded for the BB8830; relunctedly I might add. I liked the windows features and ease of compatability. Well i began enjoying my new BB. I love the magnetic holter. phone feature works great except for quiet ringer. batterylife good. Fonts too small on menus after upgrading to a blackberry block theme. I miss the camera and video a lot. I wish it had stereo output. I have had nothing but headaches trying to sync features with vista programs. Calender syncs with ggogle.. Contacts with no program and email syncs with windows mail. You can see the problems. But I am looking for the day when this will be solved. I still love the device but the Voyager does look sweet. By the way my major complaint with the 8830 is the keyboard. You can't hardly see anything lit or not. they need to copy the 700w keyboard.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I needed it for work and I needed it to travel for work. I thought this was the best solution for me to keep in touch with my family while I was travelling overseas. Well, the phone has been put away. I've tried SIM after SIM, tried customer support and was told that I had to use the Sprint SIM on Sprint's international plan. Ummm, I thought I could use this with any SIM since it was supposed to be unlocked overseas?

I love this phone stateside. It has lived up to my needs but, I'm thinking of dumping sprint due to its horrible customer service and sketchy service in my area. ATT gets my vote and my money once my sprint contract is up...maybe their international claims will actually work for me.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I use to have the 7280. The trackball the middle feels weird in beginning but after a day or two you get use to it. The phone fits well in your hand as well

Pros: speakerphone
auto-dimming
graphics
MAPS
Browser

Cons: Camera

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I find the operating system limiting when compared to the treo 650, however what the Blackberry 8830 does, it does well.

After several months' use I'm hooked on Blackberry's push technology. Receiving e-mails almost as soon as they are sent to me is much better than sitting at my computer for 30 min. everyday and sifting through messages.

My phone is my organizer, my agenda, my contacts manager etc... I also use it to monitor stocks throughout the day. I'm very happy with it.

PROS: decent reception, great battery life (2 *full* days atleast), replaces paper and pen organizer, very efficient means of communicating by e-mail, optional media player works ok

CONS: occasionally freezes, web browsing not consistently fast, screen is kind of small, the case is not that useful but better than nothing

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

rds52860 submitted this review of the BlackBerry 8830:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I purchased this phone two weeks ago at full price. I used the Motorola Q for a little over a year.

The BlackBerry 8830 is great as a phone (very clear reception) and a pda!!! The proprietary OS is somewhat difficult at first, but I have adjusted. I like that fact that I can sync my desktop & laptop all with this BlackBerry.

Great screen color, e-mails are usually delivered to BlackBerry before they arrive in my Outlook. Ringtones are softer than most, but not as annoying. The holster is great with its energy saving "powers."

The battery on this pda/phone is unbelievable. I use this phone all day e-mailing, txting & talking. . .and in the evening I have 1/2 battery left.

No Camera is not a big deal.

Am still learning so much about this phone. Next big project is to learn how to open documents, etc.

Would recommend to all who are looking for a pda/phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
