BlackRoseAngel submitted this review of the HTC Mogul / XV6800 / PPC6800 / P4000:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

This was my first "smart" phone. But, I can hardly qualify it as a smart phone, there was nothing smart about it. It is unfortunately that HTC had the misfortune to put this horrid software known as an operating system Windows Mobile on it. At first, this phone was fun. Being my first non-dumb phone. I owned it for maybe 6 to 8 months, and over the course of the time it became so slow that the alarm would sound hours after it was set to sound. Becoming completely unresponsive! This phone, I think, would have made a better PDA because a phone it was not, and smart it was not.

Pros:
Best Physical Keyboard I've Ever Used

Cons:
Terrible OS
Terrible Battery Life
Terrible Camera
Terrible Thickness
Terrible Processor
No Real Apps

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Thats all

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

gunmetalRED submitted this review of the HTC Mogul / XV6800 / PPC6800 / P4000:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

When I first got this phone, I was quite disappointed. Windows Mobile 6 was laggy and unreliable. The phone reset itself when closing the keyboard. It also would not ring when someone called, only to ring sometimes HOURS later. It did not inform me of new text messages for hours. Same with voice messages. Just weird.

I was about to send the useless brick back when I decided to try an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.1. What a difference!

While still a bit slow, 6.1 is muuuch more reliable. It actually rings now! It gets texts and voicemail instantly! It no longer resets itself when closing the keyboard! It's like a totally new phone.

With that out of the way, it really is a great phone. The screen is large, clear, and very responsive to touch. Lots of shortcut buttons on the sides. Sound clarity is good, but quiet. The slide-out keyboard is nice and large, with a nice solid feel. It's relatively easy to navigate once you get a feel for Windows Mobile. There are tons of programs that run with WM, like Microsoft Money, Google Maps, MS Office, etc. MS Money is why I got a WM-based phone.

On the Phone screen, it is laggiest when dialing and when ending the call. It seems to take a few pushes of the End button to end a call.

I love using the WiFi instead of data-call Internet. I don't use the Internet much, so I don't want to pay extra for a data plan. The WiFi is a great alternative. However, if you have no data plan, make sure Internet Explorer closes and is not running in the background!! If it is running and you turn the WiFi off, it may connect to the provider's data service instead, which you will be charged for.

I killed my phone accidentally this weekend, but I love it enough to buy another HTC, a Touch Pro. I'm totally addicted to touchscreens and QWERTY keyboards now.

Pros:
Large Touchscreen
QWERTY keyboard
WiFi
TONS of add-on programs
Construction
Threaded text messaging

Cons:
Battery life
Volume
WM 6.0 instability, lag

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

This phone was a total waste of my hard earned money....and by the way it is not a cheap phone. I purchased this through Sprint in Sept of 08'. Seems like the phone had issues straight out of the box. At times the phone was slow to respond. And I found myself resetting the phone several times a week. (Not sure if the phone was defective or not). What spoiled it for me...there were several instances where I needed to call 911. When I needed the phone it was slow to respond or it just plan froze. I could not do anything but wait angrily while my phone rebooted :( In the beginning I read both good and bad reviews for this phone. Again this is my personal review of this phone....if I had to reccomend this phone, I would not. I'd invest in a flock of pigeons!!!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I can honestly say that this was a stopping point. I have had this phone for the last year and I am still amazed of the task it is capable of.

Pros:
Upgrades and tweaks are constantly coming out.
Many Windows Mobile Programs to cusomize this to any life style.
Reliable, it just works!
Large display
Keyboard laid out for ease of use
Size is perfect for the functions the xv6800 is capable of!

Cons:
Verizon's color is only a matte Blue. need more color choices.
Verizon needs to improve overall cosmetic appeal of their equipment.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

pfreeland submitted this review of the HTC Mogul / XV6800 / PPC6800 / P4000:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

This is a gadget that looks great in a feature matrix. However, it is an unbelievable pain to actually use as a telephone, a stark testament to technology done badly from a user's standpoint.

This is a two hands, full attention device to operate.

It's a Microsoft Windows machine:
- It takes forever to boot up.
- The menu trees are deep and non-intuitive.
- It occasionally forgets how to talk to the Bluetooth and must be rebooted.
- It occasionally locks up and must be rebooted by removing the battery.

I'm never quite sure if it's going to use the Bluetooth or not, so I have to answer with the headset in and the phone held to my ear.

The side button layout is appalling. If you use the thumbwheel to scroll and then try to squeeze it to select an item, the opposing finger squeezes the power button and the phone turns off.

The device actually goes into standby in the middle of your phone call. You can still talk, but you have to re-power the device to see what's going on, and click past the "my info" screen to get back to where you were.

Finale: Today, the phone wouldn't boot. This is not unusual, so I did the usual drill: Remove the battery and reinsert. Still no dice. After many tries I realize it's dead.

I also notice, looking inside the phone, that the little moisture detection sticker says "VOID", which of course means the company isn't going to honor its warranty. This "business" phone has been exactly three places: Inside my climate-controlled home and office, inside the occasional climate-controlled restaurant, and inside my car. It has never been left outside or been spilled on, etc. However, I often have left my phone in the car when I go into work. So if you are still not convinced, be forewarned: Routinely leaving this phone in a parked car may cause it to fail, and also VOID YOUR WARRANTY.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

It is a nice phone with a nice keyboard. It has no anamations like the touch pro phone, it is slow, locks up all the time, and the screen sometimes does not reconize any touches of the finger. I say that they could have made a better phone, especially for the high price..

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

stagerlee submitted this review of the HTC Mogul / XV6800 / PPC6800 / P4000:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

I would like to say I am a power user, but since I can not reply to ANY of my emails from my Bellsouth account, I simply use this PDA as a phone. This is not a good phone either, to find a contact you have to search all of your contacts, there is no good way to put the contact that you dial, frequently, in a one touch mode.
So, the phone feature is not good either. I also did a lot of research on this PDA and others as well, and all the reviews seem to be "sugar coded". This through me off, so I bought the Mogul. The worst purchase I have ever made, and am in the process of posting it on the web to sell it. Not, Sprint, Bellsouth, or anyone, including the techs in the store or on the phone can figure out how to get my Bellsouth emails out. I have tried everything, nothing works.
Hopefully someone will read this review prior to purchasing a Mogul and think twice about the purchase.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

herchenx submitted this review of the HTC Mogul / XV6800 / PPC6800 / P4000:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

The 2 rules for posting on this were
1) be nice
2) don't be rude

Given these, I'm not certain I can post a review of this product.

I have had the phone for almost a year. As a phone it is almost entirely useless. Hard to dial, the touch screen can be completely unresponsive at times, and the whole device locks up frequently enough that I am forced to not use the phone(!).

I upgraded the ROM and am now running Windows 6.1 but it is worse than ever. I get constant errors about device.exe failing to load, the thing locks up all the time, the battery life is terrible.

I thought the phone was broken so I had Sprint replace it (I have the warranty) and the new phone - with nothing installed beyond the pre-loaded apps and all my contacts - runs horribly.

The only thing that works consistently on the phone (as long as it hasn't locked up), that I actually really like is the Sprint Navigation feature. It's like a simplified TomTom or Garmin: "Turn left at the light in 1/4 mile"

I had the Blackberry 8830 and it is a MILLION times better. GPS works great, it never locked up, the keypad always worked. PHONE always worked (imagine that). If you are thinking about buying the Mogul - please, save yourself the immense grief and STAY AWAY.

As soon as I get a little ahead and can afford to, I am replacing this thing. I can't say enough how disappointing it has been.

Oh look, the Mogul now says "Cannot execute tmail.exe"

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

There is hardly any ram on this device to run programs. I believe there is about 64 megs of ram on this device. The problem is that most of the ram is used up by the Operating system or something else. You are left with hardly any ram to run programs. I have to constantly do a soft reset. I have tried several webrowsers like Opera 9.5, Iris, Netfront and they all seem to crash or be very slow. At the price I paid, It should do more.

tellenerd submitted this review of the HTC Mogul / XV6800 / PPC6800 / P4000:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Ive had the 6700 it the mogul is far better . The phone worked great as WM6 but as WM6.1 its even greater. The IM like text messaging. As 6.1 it actually allowed me to send text to emails. I like the other phones like the Diamond and Diamond Pro but I'm too attached to my Mogul :0)

**PROS:**
- WM6/WM6.1 i love it. i can make my phone look like the touch with the sliding menus like the iphone "even" like the diamond. way too cool!
- Camera is awesome too. "with" flash
-Windows Media Player Makes it way to easy to put music on phone.
- Extremely customizable down to the clock on the top right.
-so many things compatible with windows
-Windows live is pretty cool

**CONS:**
-Speaker could be louder (my bf has the centro and speaker is ridiculously loud)
-Sprint Tv could be better but i don't watch it anyways lol
-Could have a lil bit more memory
-MMS or even smilies :0)

other then that the phone is great. But most of the cons can easily be fixed with a few downloads and a great memory card. Signal is great inernet is pretty fast and with the flash download its like desktop web. Sound quality in the phone calls is good too. But then again I've never had a problem with sprint. Actually Very durable i've dropped it over 6 dozen time and its still kicking and it could look way worst.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

It's got absolutely no good UI enhancements, so without something like the SPB Software House applications, it's impossible to do much of anything. Even creating a text message or looking up a contact is a pain. The only upside is a nice big QWERTY keyboard. Applications are wicked slow, and had to reboot constantly.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

PaulonPhoneScoop submitted this review of the HTC Mogul / XV6800 / PPC6800 / P4000:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

Just like everything Microsoft does - it may or may not work. It often crashes. You might be in the middle of a call and it crashes. I bought this phone because I intended to use its features - I do and it can't handle it. With just a few apps running the performance degrades terribly. Very often while in phone mode and trying to dial - the keypad can't keep up with the digits being entered... this with only the Phone app running! This phone also forgets the primary purpose - TO BE A TELEPHONE! In order to assign a number to a silent ring - I had to record a short wave file with silence and assign that as the ring tone... come ON! Saving contacts is a bumpy road - where my old faithful Razor was a breeze. I've had one issue after another but just enough functionality to say; well I'll just keep using it and maybe I'll learn to like it ... I don't, I'm beyond the trial period and stuck with this POS for another 22 months. I averted my attention from the iPhone during this purchase because I heard that it was "touchy" ...not rugged enough to handle a businessman's use. I thought the HTC model might better handle this problem... wrong! It's too fragile to be called a cellular telephone. RUN AWAY... don't bother with this one - it sucks.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

So in a nutshell, this phone is my best friend! I would recommend it to anybody!!!

Pros-
-Windows Mobile 6.1 update available through Sprint Technical Support or HTC's website. My phone is so customizable with the massive amount of third party applications out there.

-Camera that actually has a flash

-Easy Access to all your favorite E-mails

-Buttons on the device are programmable to your favorite things, like messaging, Internet, camera etc

-Love Love Love the slide out QWERTY keyboard

-EVDO is fantastic!!

Cons-
-Weight, its really bulky

-When setting your own text ringer.. when receiving a text it now plays the whole amount of the sound clip you set, 2 min or 2 seconds, the whole thing, it doesn't stop ringing even if you open, read and reply to the text message.
It gets rather annoying quickly.
So I stick to 3-6 second sounds clips like my favorite quotes from TV shows, etc.

-Difficult phone to learn, lots of goodies and menus to remember

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I've had the mogul for about a year now and i cant wait to get a new phone already. well i've been feeling like that for the past six months so here are my pros and cons and cons and more cons.

pros:
-qwerty keyboard
-many shortcut buttons
-nice screen size
-internal antenna
-very good reception
-evdo rev. a

cons:
-slow, very slow, every this is slow and unresponsive.
-backlight for keyboard takes a sec or so to light up
-2.0 mp camera is super slow and quality is horrible. very grainy and just plain bad. ive seen 1.3 mp cameras with so much better quality that are two years older than the mogul. you want a good camera phone, get a samsung.
-phone locks up very easily, especially if your online and you don't touch it for a few seconds. always have to soft reset, very annoying.
-voice command is a joke, just horrendous. i cannot tell you how much i hate the voice command on this piece. I'll press the button and say "wife the phone will say, Calling "Austin".
voice command is just worthless on this phone.
-pixel burn problem on the lower left hand corner of screen. i think thats a problem with all mogul since this is my second one that has pixel burn in same exact spot.
-dialing is a pain, number buttons on the touch screen are not very responsive
-no opera web browser pre-installed(internet explorer sucks)

Owning this phones makes me want to go back to a regular clam shell. stay away from the mogul if you want to have a pleasant cell phones experience. Hopefully the Touch Pro will do what this phone couldn't, and thats work properly. It pains me to give this phone a rating of 2, because it probably deserves a lower rating.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Amill submitted this review of the HTC Mogul / XV6800 / PPC6800 / P4000:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Laugh if you will, I am asked no less than 3 times a week to use the 'bat phone' to find something out - Directions, email, movie show times, recipes, how to eat a crawfish; you name it. I have had my Mogul on Sprint since last spring and I have to say it is the single most useful objects in my household. This is not to say I haven't sent it flying in frustration. Most of my frustrations came before upgrading to the official Sprint WM6.1 rom. Memory issues are absent, as is unreasonable slow down since upgrading.

Pros:
-Windows Mobile 6.1
-EVDO Rev A. With Opera Mobile 8.65 and SkyFire, it’s a desktop web experience including flash. I once used a YouTube video to learn how to eat crawfish.
- Google Maps compatible GPS. I have to say, this feature alone makes the $15.00 ‘unlimited data package’ worth it. Google Maps is a free download and a necessity. Just call me Tom-Tom.
- Divx Video Player and Pocket Divx Encoder (Both downloadable for free). I have an infant son that LOVES Baby Einstein my ‘backup copies’ on my Mogul have saved me many hours of crying babies.
- Slide out QWERTY Keyboard. I will never, ever, send a text from a standard mobile keypad again. *shuddering with pleasure*
- Very Sturdy. I have run this phone through the wringer, and it has held up better than anything since my Motorola i60.

Cons:
-Windows Mobile 6.1
-Before WM6.1 this phone was frustrating at best. Frequently out of memory and random slowdowns led to it having several… accidents.
-Good PDA, crappy phone. To dial numbers on this phone is to know frustration. You would think this is what it did best. You would be wrong â€" the touch screen numbers are unresponsive and there are no direct access number keys on the keyboard ala the Touch Pro.
-Poor Battery Life. I kill my battery twice daily. I have a charger under my desk at work and charge it for about an hour everyday. I am shocked that Sprint/HTC doesn’t offer a standard extra battery and charger like the Instinct.

Highly Recommended.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

ksharra submitted this review of the HTC Mogul / XV6800 / PPC6800 / P4000:

Overall rating: 2 (out of 5)

I was very impressed with the phone when I first bought it a few months ago. I love the notes, the email was really easy to set up, and with Windows Mobile, I was able to get all kinds of great apps to turn this phone into my all-purpose do-everything device. I ESPECIALLY love the combination of touch screen and keyboard, it makes typing, chatting, IMing, and IRCing a dream.

But gradually over time, the phone started to degrade and got really buggy. It started freezing, stopped playing sounds, the backlight wouldn't turn off, and the vibrate would stay on continuously until I popped the battery out. It kept this up even after a master reset and removing all my great 3rd party apps. The phone runs slowly, takes forever to start up, and file browsing freezes up the phone.

And to add insult to injury, Sprint disables MMS on all its smartphones, so as much as I love the camera on the phone, it's not really all that useful if I can't share the pics I take.

All in all, it runs like every other Windows device I've ever owned: I love the features, it does (almost) everything I want, but it's slow and crashes and makes me regret not getting something else.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

imsodamnhappy submitted this review of the HTC Mogul / XV6800 / PPC6800 / P4000:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

First off, I would not call yourself a power user if you can't fix most of the flaws that this phone has out of the box, which for what this phone does, it's pretty much flawless.

It was a sad day to put my apache in it's box, but I have to move on someday. What better phone to move on to than it's successor and what a success the mogul is.

Pro's

- Overall Snappy menu browsing/program usage
- Activated GPS (sprint)
- Keyboard and keyboard light visibility
- Size
- EVDO Rev. A is speedy
- More storage
- Amazing Functionality
- Got rid of external antenna
- Internet usage via Skyfire is brilliant
- Sprint TV

Con's

- Didn't update RAM
- No 2.5mm jack
- Camera COULD be better for 2MP, but I don't use the phone for a camera, I have a camera for that. The camera works great outside though
- LCD defect (very small bright spot in lower left corner that is visible on high contrast backgrounds)

I am not going to include battery in cons because you really have to expect battery life to not be that great in a device like this. It's a powerful device that does a lot of amazing things, all in a pretty nice size. You can buy an extended battery that will make it as bulky as the 6700 if you are that picky. I just have extra batteries I pop in.

The greatest thing about this phone and everything HTC has done is how easy it really is to upgrade the phone yourself. You don't have to be a expert to add new programs or find them. You don't even have to be an expert to custom rom the phone because there are plenty of nice fellow users who will help you out.

There are tons of 3rd party freeware apps and also warez that you can get to make this perform better than some peoples laptops.

When it all comes down to it, I will always take functionality over design. The iPhone and it's copies may be pretty, but they will never do what this phone will.

Overall, HTC has not let me down. I don't think they ever will.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
