syncats submitted this review of the Motorola W490 / W510 / W5:

Overall rating: 1.5 (out of 5)

I got it because its pink. PONS: pink, zoom camera, 5 alarms, soft ring may set for slected ring tones only and reg ring for mine and all others. memory card a plus. may set more then 9 speed dial no.s if u can work from phone. may hold up to 1000 nos. CONS: couldn't seem to find out how to use the extra speed no.s just 9. White screen alot. (couldnt use in emer.) had to keep removing my texts in and out, have no more that 50 together for it to work better. needs way to use speed nos easy. OVER ALL: I would say no. I dont use the extra stuff, but for me as a person whom wants the car to drive and the phone to work. I like easy and to work when I take care of things.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

matmathop submitted this review of the Motorola W490 / W510 / W5:

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

When I switched to T-Mobile, I had to switch away from my favorite brand, LG. I always felt that there was something cheap about Samsung, and kiddy about Nokia. The Motorola brand seemed to be the logical choice. Now that I've owned mine for over a year:

PROS:
-Battery Life has been good (usually don't need a recharge for 2-4 days)
-call quality is good, clear, and speaker phone works well
-display is clear and bright, readable in all but the most impossible outdoor settings
-Surprisingly adept texter and text manager. Easy to pop open and reply / generate new and send
-Finish has survived several drops, and picked up only minor scratches. Still feels solid and blemishes are really hard to notice (and I really gave it a good one on the pavement)

CONS:
-Camera really needs a flash. It is sub par anyway, and the screen is ultimately too small to enjoy them anyway. And Tmobile won't let you send a pic without email attaching it and sending. Should be able to just USB them.
-Limited ringtones, and all the basic ones are pretty lame.
-Browser? Forgettaboutit - so slow
-slowest interface in the world, lags while doing anything from choosing a menu to dialing a number
-did I mention I don't think its responsive?

SUM
I've never really preferred Motorola's phones. This is a GREAT phone though if you are just looking to make a few calls and texts every now and again. But Motorola really needs to either streamline their OS or invest in faster chips because the slow responses make their phones feel . . . well, even more basic. A solid and reliable choice however for the non-geek.

Other than that, I do still find it hilarious, having used iPhones and Blackberries, that these companies think we should pay 100 bucks a month or more for premium data and text services. When the hardware and speed are that good, let me know.

In the mean time, my 2.5 rating reflects that the phone is great, but not outstanding compared to the high end phones available. I don't covet it.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Amusing_Girl submitted this review of the Motorola W490 / W510 / W5:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I purchased the Motorola W490 in May of 2008 from a MN T-Mobile retailer. It has user-friendly terms on all menus, large icons, and the font is easy to read.

COMPACT DESIGN: It’s perfect for people with small hands and it fits well into small places. Durable with minor accidents.

BATTERY LIFE: The battery life is exceptional. Several warning beeps before the battery goes dead.

KEYPAD: The keypad has a soft backlight and is flat with a raised surface area dividing the keys and on the number “5”. The keypad sound has adjustable volume levels or may be silent.

DISPLAY SCREEN: Icons can be re-arranged and the display screen fades to black during conversation. The internal and external displays are easy to view and may be personalized.

MESSAGING: Easy to use for text, email, and instant messaging. Default templates built in or create your own. The text message display is only one-line showing the name or number. The “Mobile Email” feature allows you to access 12 different email providers, but MSN isn’t one of them.

HANDS-FREE & SPEAKERPHONE: The speakerphone feature has great sound quality, but the speaker is on the back of the phone near the bottom so it can be muffled a bit depending on the surface or if being held. Bluetooth is simple to setup " phone settings has a “find me” option. The voice-dialing feature is sensitive - may dial if wording is used in a sentence.

MEMORY, PHONEBOOK & TOOLS: The memory is small, but large enough to handle the phonebook, music, games, video clips, and photos. The phonebook has a large capacity and allows multiple numbers, emails, websites, home/business addresses, and birthdays. The calendar is ok, but the color-coding for events are bright colors that are not always easy to read.

SIGNAL/SERVICE: This is a quad-mode phone so it works in many areas where other phones can’t get a signal (regardless of carrier) and it has international capabilities.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

vasquez05 submitted this review of the Motorola W490 / W510 / W5:

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

I bought this phone after having a Motorola Black pebble phone that only lasted a year due to the fact that charger port stooped working. I would connected but it wouldn't charge. I went to T-Mobile and decided to do an upgrade for a better model but at a reasonable price. I did my research and decided to get this phone since I saw it came in a variety of colors. I fell in love with the Purple version of the phone. I bought and was happy with it until now. Never gave any problems and I also took really good care of it. However, this May it made a year a bought the phone. Little did a know that it would start to give me problems. One day out of the blue my screen started to turn white everytime I open the phone. I thought maybe it was the batteries. from one day to the next my phone went from a white screen to a black screen. couldn't access the menu, I couldn't even see the time on the outside screen. I call T-mobile and they tell me that my phone couldn't be replaced because the factory warranty had expire two week priors. So I had to get a new phone I choose a Samsumg this time around. Since before I became a T-Mobile I used to be with Spring and owned a Samsung Phone. It was one of the best phone I ever had. It lasted a really long time besides the fact that i drooped a couple of times. ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T BUY MOTOROLA'S THEY ARE REALLY CHEAPLY MADE AND DON'T LAST MORE THAN A YEAR.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

LOL

I was highly humiliated and to this day people remember me and my purple phone.

I had no idea the 1st W490 came with purple keys. Pros end there.

Not only was the texting a different style than most, but the memory storage is only 50 messages per box. Now the phone its self was crap. I had it for three days, put it in my pocket at work (the local drug store, not too taxing on it) and the front LCD screen shattered and spidered its self into oblivion. Of -course- I can't get it replaced, cause it counts as a user error, but I'm pretty sure that if a phone breaks within three days by putting it into your pocket, you just wasted your money. I say, take that piece of crap off the market.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The Housing for the back battery comes off loose all the time. So if you drop your phone, your battery, memory card and sim card will most likely fly off in different directions! The camera is decent, the mp3 player is decent but surfing thoughout the music list takes forever... the processor itself is very slow! Terrible phone! the only thing I liked is first, I paid like 30 bucks for it (and send it right back) the screen kept going blank on me! The only thing I really truely did like about it is the fact that I could change the alert message for whenever I got a text (that one phrase from the movie "Eurotrip") and the fact that it was green (which is my club colors) so dont ever bother with this phone!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

balcones27 submitted this review of the Motorola W490 / W510 / W5:

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

I'm using this phone on T-Mobile in the Dallas, Texas area. The reception quality is ok. I've had better and certainly worse. I have had this phone for over 9 months now. The camera quality is better than I would expect for 1.3 mp. The pictures do look a little washed out though. The phone is good about hiding scratches. Though the black color is starting to disappear and bare metal is starting to show at the top where the phone hinges.

The battery cover used to be hard to remove (a good thing), but now it slides off way too easily. I have had the cover come off, while holding the phone in my hand. Also, the cover on one of the navigation keys is starting to crack. The menu can be slow to respond. The display is clear and looks good. However, the date only displays on the outer screen, not the larger inner screen. I don't know if this due to T-Mobile's adjustments to the phone or all W490s are like this. A flash for the camera would have been nice too.

My major complaint about this phone is that when it is on silent or vibrate, it is WAY too easy for it too be switched to ring. A simple key press on the side (even when the phone is closed) switches the phone from silent to ring loudly. I've had it switch to loud in my pocket and when pulling it out. A major design flaw, Imo.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

At first I wanted it in black but they were sold out and now I'm glad I got the grape one. This is a great basic phone. I love the color I have and I like the bright display. I wish the backlight stayed on longer than 20 seconds but I can live with that. My camera takes pretty good pics even though other reviews say the camera is not so hot. I can download ringtones and they sound pretty good. I am happy with my phone and I'm glad I made the choice that I made.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

l593 submitted this review of the Motorola W490 / W510 / W5:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

I got this phone about two weeks ago only because it was free with T-mobile and I have to say I really like it! It often gets mistaken for a RAZR at a few feets distant which I find kind of odd, but up close you realize its not! All the features are excellent although photo quality could be better, but its fine. Service is superb, I always seem to have 5 bars no matter where I'm at, like in a basement. My old phone was always searching for service! I'd say if you want a sleek hot phone with all the features like cam/vid/music etc. for a very low price, then this is a very excellent option! Get It!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

truluv1990 submitted this review of the Motorola W490 / W510 / W5:

Overall rating: 3.5 (out of 5)

I recently switched to this phone from a Samsung and was impressed. I never cared for Motorolas; I didn't think they were durable. But so far this phone is okay.

Pros:
Calls are clear
Sleek, convenient design
Can change soft keys to what you want
Crystal clear camera
Loud speakers, whether it be ringtones or
speakerphone
Date is shown on outer screen
Good battery life
Great txt message capacity..about 400 i think
Can check and reply to email on phone
Can transfer files thru bluetooth
Quality mp3 player

Cons:
Screens seem delicate...easily gets scratched
Slow response..im a fast texter so the slow
iTAP usually is far behind and you have to
wait for it to catch up
If you press to many buttons at once or open
it too fast it tends to freeze..
iTAP kinda sucks. The most common word doesnt
always pop up first
You have to go to a whole different menu just
to add a signature to your text. It should
be automatic

Overall pretty decent phone

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

alashoop101 submitted this review of the Motorola W490 / W510 / W5:

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

I got this phone about a month ago. The first night i got it i noticed a few things i didn't like but i thought i just needed to get used to the features. Now, a while later I'm just getting sick of it.

PROS
- very stylish and great design
- very thin
- large LCD screen
- Awesome 1.3 megapixle camera with 8x zoom
- You can record your own ringtones instead of just buying them
- Large inbox/outbox capacity (up to about 300)

CONS
- not too user friendly. Though I am pretty good at figuring things out so it was rather easy for me.
- front display is not great

And the biggest con is that is slow to respond. You often have to press buttons twice or even three times for it to actually respond. I use the phone primarily for texting. And it is and immense pain for me to text. I text very fast and it can barely keep up with me. When I finish typing i will look up and half the words are miss spelled from the terrible iTAP design and it is still typing about a sentence behind me.

Overall an OK phone but I am definitely looking to replace it. If you don't text much, it will be a pretty nice phone.

Another piece of advice is to go into a store and check it out for yourself.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

beeferjay submitted this review of the Motorola W490 / W510 / W5:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

so, i have had t-mobile for many years. I used to work for another carrier doing warranty so i when i come across a great phone i have to try it out.

This is a great phone where it counts; call quality, reception and battery life. Anything other than that is just a bonus.

It is amazing how many phones rate sub par one the most important yet basic elements of a phone.

Pros:
price-about $40 right now with 2 year extension
call qualify- clean and crisp even in the dead spots in phoenix
battery life-i only charge it twice a week with moderate use. maximum talk time is 8 hours per the user's manual
sturdy feel, nice hinge
memory card slot is hot-swappable but under battery cover
1.3 MP camera is nice for a phone camera
full duplex speaker means you can actually hear your phone ringing
music player is standard.
lets you send MP3s in picture message (you can send all your homies ringtones)
keypad clicks when you press a number, even though the buttons are flat.

Cons:
back cover feels like cheap plastic even though its secure
menus are slow (its a motorola)
no different folders for music or pictures (it will bring up in the order you put it on your phone)
limited external display functionality (cant really do anything special with the outside screen)
internal display is a bit small, although it is crisp and bright

If you are looking for 5 million features on your cell phone and dont really care about the phone part, buy another phone.

If you want a rock solid performer that you wont have to call in about in 3 months, buy this phone. Buy it for your kids, give it away for christmas.

2 thumbs up

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

And i love it. at first i did have a couple problems (email not wanting to work and messenger freezing my phone.) but after about a month it all works now!

Pros:
*soft keys for MP3 player.
*Memory card slot so you don't have to remove *battery.
*slick
*small
*durable
*long lasting battery (i work in a call center and so of course i have my phone on vib. and i normally text the whole day 8hr shift. and talk on the phone average 30min-1hour and i come home and am only missing one bar.)

Cons:
*Outside gets scratched easily
*One of my arrow keys in the circle is starting to crack
*I'm afraid that the top part is going to fall apart sometime. its starting to seem a little flimsy but it prob wont.

overall my sister and i both have this phone and we love it.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

tooliguy submitted this review of the Motorola W490 / W510 / W5:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

I picked this phone up for my son but wanted to check it out before I gave it to him. I use the KRZR K1. You can actually read the front display outside or bright light on the W490. This phone is like the little brother compared the the K1 but in some ways is more user friendly. I really liked the Email app. It worked very nice. The battery life seems to be a little better as well. Motorola has put a few things in different places. The speaker phone is not an active soft key, you get mute instead while in a call but it is in the menu on the left soft key. The calculator is in a different menu as well so you may need to look around inside to find where things are. You do however have the option to change your soft key settings to other functions witch is nice. FYI if you change the shortcut tab you will not be able to put it back unless you reset the phone. The keypad could have been a little better but it gets the job done.
All in all a nice rounded phone that works well.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

AsianBlaze submitted this review of the Motorola W490 / W510 / W5:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I just got this phone yesterday and played around with it for a couple of hours and I actually really like it. The only down side to this phone is if you text a lot or text really fast you out text the program. It doesn't skip words or anything but you'll need to give it a couple of seconds to catch up to what you've just typed. The design is really good, it fits nicely into your pocket and doesn't get in the way of anything. To my surprise when i was messing with the phone you can actually control the music that you're listening to with the phone closed, even though it looks like there are no external controls. I would recommend this phone, it is fairly cheap and is a really good phone. It has excellent features, the camera is pretty good, not the best but i would say pretty good for a phone. The service is pretty much the same as all my other phones. It's got good service where I'm at. I live in St. George, Utah and T-mobile is pretty good out here. I would totally recommend this phone it's got nice features, call quality is AWESOME, a lot better than my old Motorola V360. For the price of this phone it is a great bargain. MP3, 1.3 megapixle Camera, thin and lightweight, average height and width.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

optiplex52 submitted this review of the Motorola W490 / W510 / W5:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

This review does not cover multimedia functions, camera functions, or texting. I have no interest in them. Since I live in the mountain region of northeast Tennessee(Johnson City), the ability to make calls is what is important to me. I purchased this phone(unlocked) directly from the MOTO store as a replacement for my Nokia 6010. I have had the phone for 3 weeks. To date I have been very happy with the phone.

Pros.

Great signal on AT&T(I can even get signal in my office at work which I could not get on my old phone)
Voice quality is good
Good battery life (5-7 days)
Alarm settings (I can create multiple alarm settings and pick the one I need)
Solid feeling flip phone

Cons

Styles(called profiles on nokia) could be better. The W510 has 6 styles Loud, vibe, silent and three others. On my old nokia, when I changed profiles, I could also set an expiration time. I could change to the silent profile for example, and select a time for the phone to go back to the normal profile. This feature is not available on the W510, but it should be. To date, only compliant so far.

Overall, very good phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
