HawkeyeOC submitted this review of the Casio GzOne Type-S:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

We have had one of these in our company for the last 1 1/2 years. Sure it's bulky compared to other phones, but the whole point of this phone is to withstand abuse. It does this well.

Pros:
can be dropped, kicked, sat on, stands up to rough environments well
Can't miss the red color
good battery life

Cons:
no 2.5mm jack?
Verizons proprietary OS is nothing special

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

narn3049 submitted this review of the Casio GzOne Type-S:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

Hello guys, what we have to review today is the Casio G'zone Type-s cell phone. My uncle currently owned this phone and has had it replaced 7 times all just times because he wants his objects/tech to be perfect not a scratch, yet that is hard for him because he is a construction worker.

The 1st 2 phones had like software problems and one he dropped a fireplace mantle on, I mean it didnt die after that and got scratched up, he even dropped it 50 feet and it still works from just dropping it off of a balcony, where as his phone before lg 9900 envy (first gen) which was kind of a weird designed phone, etc, and he claimed it was horrible, would've broken.

I got a boulder 6 months ago in orange and I am liking it a lot as well. The camera's on both phones are similar and I really. really dont regret this purchase at all.

I had previously owned the Moto 276, and it turned off and wouldnt go back on ever again, it looked kind of chipperish because it had been dropped a lot and this beast the boulder handles it well.

I am sadly saying that mine is starting to fall apart, the sd card cover is bending, as well as the charger port is harder to get a charge, and I have to either hold it in or use the dock. I might exchange this for the rubber ruggedized model.

One thing I noticed in performance the boulder had I wanted to share, it's that we didnt have the computer it was in the shop, I used the phone on facebook myspace twitter, and the screen looks about as good as the computer screen. low quality for the computer but 5 ***** for just that.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Thelastholdout submitted this review of the Casio GzOne Type-S:

Overall rating: 5 (out of 5)

Seriously, I do warranty work for Verizon, and I've heard some amazing stories about the things. For instance, a guy slipped and fell on top of his phone, which he had in his back pocket. Only thing that broke was the little latch that tells the phone it's closed, keeping it from going into powersave mode. Any other phone would've been crushed.

Another guy called in. His GzOne was one of the...five? GzOnes I've gotten calls about that had a legitimate defect, where it pretty much just died on him after he had it several months. He happened to have it on him after it died, when he went to a party and was slipped three date rape pills in a drink by a girl and she had him drive her in his car. They rolled over at 120 miles an hour; he has several injuries, including a shattered knee, and she is in a body cast. The phone is still physically fine.

And finally, a truck driver was climbing up into his 18 wheeler when his phone dropped out of his pocket and landed, and he accidentally backed up over it with the truck. The damage? A cracked outer screen.

Not to mention I've gotten literally about five calls about them over the past six weeks, out of six hundred calls overall.

If only T-Mobile offered something like this, and I could afford it...

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The phone spent the night in twenty feet of fresh water. He dove on it the next day and found it. Dried ot off and it worked. He still has it. It is the generation before the Boulder which came out two days ago. I thought that would be the phone for me. Yesterday it arrived and the call clarity is horrible. I thought it was my imagination, so I had my wife listen. Well I'm sending it back.Getting the Voyager.

Pros- smaller size is nice
sturdy,loud ringer. Cons- listed above.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

gak submitted this review of the Casio GzOne Type-S:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

Seriously. So you can dunk it in water and it'll still work. Big deal.

I run a service biz from my cell phone. I'm on the 2100 minute plan. Lots of talk time and brain cancer for me. For 2.5 years I abused an LG VX3200. When that one wore out I decided to try this phone because it was "rugged".

It might be "rugged" but it suffers from usability problems.

Cannot see the screen in sunlight. This is supposed to be for outdoor enthusiasts? The pasty-faces who designed it never took it outside... obviously.

The speaker is crap. In a quiet room I cannot hear the person on the speaker. Completely useless.

It is always setting itself to silent mode - apparently from me leaning against some fatty side button or getting pressed against my seat belt. I have to check it regularly to make sure the ring is still turned on.

Crappy ring tones. I'm not into downloading ring tones. The LG had sufficient and useful tones - this phone has very few and mostly annoying ring tones. bah.

Did I mention the stupid fat buttons on the side that set the thing into silent mode when I accidentally sit on the phone? Retarded.

To its credit - I dropped it on the pavement the other day and I picked it up in one piece, not 16 like a typical phone. I think I can fix that with an aluminum bat though.

gak out.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I had to get a -S as a replacement. In reading the reviews I found them helpful and the positive ones were accurate at least from what I've seen thus far. One thing I'd like to correct is on the text messaging its an option to set your input mode to T9 over Abc or ABC. Just go to your menu and do so.
Just my $.02 I'll add more once I've shaken the bugs out.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

I just got the new Matte (flat) Black version. Its amazing what a color can do. It looks and feels nothing like it Blue counterpart. It really has a cool look.
The phone gets an amazing signal, don't believe otherwise. Functionality is very good. The screen res is better than most at 176x220. Only complain is the tinny speaker phone caused by the waterproof design.
I gotta laugh at the people who buy a bigger type phone then list it as a "CON"?????

If your looking for a Verizon Rugged Phone thats made to Mil-Std-810 for shock, vibration, humidity, salt fog and water immersion, then the new Matte Black Type-S is for you.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

freescotland submitted this review of the Casio GzOne Type-S:

Overall rating: 2 (out of 5)

I really wanted a V series but could not find one this side of ebay.
As a contractor I needed the toughness of this phone.
It is solidly built, for me that is where the good mostly ends for me.
Pros:
Well built
Decent keyboard
Reception seems good based on limited use

Cons:
The deal breaker for me, I returned this phone, the display screen on the inside is not bright enough to use outdoors. It was slightly overcast one day, sunny another and even a very cloudy day, and the screen was very difficult to see.
Another issue, also display-related, is the size of the screen, among the smallest I've seen. For a phone this size, this is sad.
The VGA camera was also a disappointment.

Some of this is an overall comparison to the V series, which my friend owns. It has a large, bright screen (260K colors vs. 65K on the S series, and a 2.2 screen vs. the 1.8 on the S)

The addition of Bluetooth in no way covers the downgrading of this phone in almost every other feature. So, two stars for turning a great phone into something barely usable for one who needs an outdoor phone with decent display screen.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

seagravedriver submitted this review of the Casio GzOne Type-S:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

All and all this has been my best phone. it stays in my hand, as the grip is great with the rubberized finish. Nice idea. I have yet to drop this phone. I am outside and busy so much, I am thrilled with the fact I have yet to drop the phone. I usually put grip tape on the phones, no need this time. Easy to touch and use keys. I am struggling with sending text, as it seems to revert to some non capitals, or something, more than likely, it is just me. I may actually read all of the directions.

What drives me insane is the buttons on the right side. I have to be very careful, as I put it on speaker phone more often than I ever want to when I open it. They are just TOO easy to activate. For this reason, I will probably not buy my wife one, as we usually like to have the same type of phones for charger issues. A button more on the left side would have been awesome, if it would have opened a space on the right. Perhaps there was no way to do it. And I may get used to it. We will see. Buy it again for myself, HECK YA!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

When purchased at Verizon was informed that it Had Web capabilities. For only Two minuets with all bars. Then was informed by Verizon that their are equipment issues and a software fix is needed from the manufacturer that does not yet exist. We were informed to return the phone because a software patch did not yet exist.

mylufis submitted this review of the Casio GzOne Type-S:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

OK, I like the phone. I have only lost a call near an area where I have always lost calls in the past. It is durable, I like the way it feels in hand. I have no real complaint with the sound quality. I have tried a blue-tooth headset and it was horrible. I am searching for a blue-tooth headset that I can count on. I tried a wired headset and it was also not great quality.
These are things that are not huge issues for me except I am searching for a blue-tooth headset that I can count on.

My real issue and maybe it is me:
Why is there 2 speaker phone buttons?
I find that I am turning the speaker phone on when I change volume, turn on/off etc. This drives me nuts.

I would like to see that changed and a media card added. I do not have high expectations on pix quality, (it is a phone) but to be able to have the novelty is nice.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

climb14d submitted this review of the Casio GzOne Type-S:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

After several days with my new BLACK type-S I am rather pleased. After trying an LG EnV with my NE2 credit I had to return it. Despite the qwerty keyboard and other nice features the reception was not even comparable to my MOTO E815. So far the Type-S seems to be able to hold on to a signal pretty close to the MOTO.

One MAJOR difference I noticed after playing with the Blue model in a store and my Black type-s(online only currently) is the exterior coating is NOT high-gloss paint. The Black model actually grips when in hand and when on other plastic surfaces. It seems comparable to the rubberized coating used on some phones. This was a complaint of other reviewers with the Blue model.

PROS:
>Build quality is tank-like
>User interface responds quickly
>Solid reception
>Only $50 with NE2
>Monochrome exterior screen, way more readable than most color screens in sunlight(less battery drain too)
>Volume of ringers and earpiece are good and loud
>The camera is useless but the LED flash works great as a flashlight
>Battery life seems solid so far

CONS:
>Considering this phones target audience is construction/outdoors people the included ringtones and wallpapers are pitiful.

>The speakerphone is obviously muffled by the fact the phones enclosure is water resistant . Clarity is decent, it just would be hard to use in a moving car, not loud enough.

>A minor issue when texting is every time I write a message I have to change the entry mode. The default mode does not use the T9 predictive input instead it uses multi-tap Abc mode. Just stupid, why not have the easier method as default.

>It is big so make sure you check it out at a store, for the big handed like myself its perfect.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

willv submitted this review of the Casio GzOne Type-S:

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

i recently switched to the gz one for the blackberry 8830, and it was a big change. i sell phones, so i know what i was getting myself into. the camera is ok, but i found out after i bought it the type v had a 2 mega-pixel camera. and the screen is bigger on the v. the only thing better about the s is bluetooth which sucks. the day i got it i put it underwater, after calling utstarcom and them telling me it is submersible to 3 ft deep, or 1 meter for 30 minutes. so i put it in a bowl of water for about 1 minute, and called it, and it rang and i answered it all wet and it worked fine. so the next day i do the same thing showing one of my friends, put it in the water for about 45 seconds maybe 3 inches deep. i call it, it rings, i answer it all wet perfectly. THEN i notice there is water on the inside of both my screens, internal and external. very disappointing. some friends have them and they have never had a prob with theirs. honestly not a good start to the most rugged phone.... ill write again when i get the replacement

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

goldenburg submitted this review of the Casio GzOne Type-S:

Overall rating: 2 (out of 5)

This is my first cell phone and I'm not happy. The ring tones that came with the phone are obnoxious and Verizon charges almost 5 bucks a piece for ring tones. It's overly user friendly, yet difficult to navigate. It seems to be well built and rugged which is nice because I almost threw it through the window out of frustration. I think it's a nice phone, maybe it's just Verizon that is the problem. I'm a newbie but charging 5 bucks for a ring tone makes me mad. I don't care if it's Prince or just a 3 year old on a piano, I want free ring tones. Thats like charging a person to change the wall paper on their desktop. Sure glad Bill Gates didn't think of that idea. I'm returning this phone, due to ring tones.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

ZHong Huan submitted this review of the Casio GzOne Type-S:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Amongst all the phones I've had, this is one of the best. It may not be multimedia oriented, but it surely holds up to some abuse.

Durability was this phone's main selling point for me. I have owned an LG Chocolate on which the screen had broken in the first month. I've dropped, kicked, fell on, and submerged this one and it's still going strong, barely a scratch even.

Call quality is great. Even in the most crowded areas people can say that they can hear me just fine. Ringtones and speakerphone are a little quiet, but the vibration function is very strong. Bluetooth works like a charm, although there are few water-proof headsets. Coverage area is superb, I like travel a lot and I've never dropped a call.

Not many problems as far as I know. It lacks evdo, but then again I can live with that. I'm more for physical activities than computer games and movies.
Data is also a tad slow, but I only download ringtones and check the weather so it's not bad at all.

Overall, if you like to go kayaking, hiking, etc... Buy this phone, it will hold up very well even though it may not have a megapixel camera or an MP3 player, but then again most phones aren't really good at that anyways. Buy a digital camera and an iPod if that's what you're into, but if you just want a long-lasting phone that won't break the bank, I highly suggest this.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

jskrenes submitted this review of the Casio GzOne Type-S:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I demoed this phone for a week or so from the store I work at, and here are my thoughts:

Pros: durability, GREAT reception, this model is bluetooth-enabled (an obvious oversight on the type V).

Cons: bluetooth is a bit finicky, speakerphone and rigntones could be louder (the waterproofing probably limits them), no memory card slot (on the upside, one less potential weak point for water), it's big.

Since I live and work in South Dakota, I don't have to travel far to find weak signal areas. This phone held its own in those. I sold a type V to a construction worker who dropped his in a bucket of tiling grout, cleaned it off, and it still works, and another guy who dropped his in the bowling-ball feeder at a bowling alley. Since I was just trying the phone out, I didn't put it through any of those tests, but it feels as durable as the type V.

On the con side, occasionally callers said I sounded like I was on speakerphone when BT was on. The phone's own speakerphone was muffled compared to some I've heard. And putting this phone in a Grizzly case and clipping that to my hip took some getting used to.

Ig you're looking for the ultimate in durability, this is the phone to beat.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Sound qualilty good, reception good, durable feel and I placed the phone in the sink full of water, then called it, it rang and vibrated and I was able to complete the call!

The data was slower than some of the others this is 1x not EVDO, so if your a gamer or video downloader ths is not for you.

Great phone!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
