hepresearch submitted this review of the Nokia N75:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I purchased this Cingular-branded Nokia N75 in near-mint condition about two months ago for a very low price. I unlocked it myself, and I am enjoying it a lot.

The software on this phone is Symbian 9.1, S60 3rd Edition, with software version 20.1.172 (also known as "Tab Top"). Unfortunately, I don't like Tab Top, as it replaced S60's active standby feature in all Cingular/AT&T branded N75's. It would be alright for heavy internet/email/multimedia users, but I prefer to use the N75 as a PIM tool more than anything else. Unbranding the phone should remove "Tab Top".

In the N75, as in my Nokia 9300, the PIM features are strong; Symbian and Nokia's PC Suite make a formidable team.

The phone has an FM radio built in, but as with my Nokia 6085, a headset must be connected for it to work. However, the phone can pipe the FM radio through the built-in stereo speakers as long as a headset is connected to the pop-port (which is mounted upside-down, and sticks a little), so I no longer have to wear the headset to listen.

The keys on the phone's keypad are large and spacious, which is nice. Overall, I like the feel of this phone. The phone gets about one day of heavy use out of the battery when on 3G coverage (and about two and a half hours of talk time), and during normal use on a 3G network, I seem to get about two to three days out of a battery charge.

Pro's:
- 220 MHz processor; an improvement over my Nokia 9300
- easy-to-use calendar and document viewers
- decent 2.0 megapixel camera with flash
- great mp3 player/stereo speaker combo with Bluetooth streaming
- spacious keypad and navigation keys
- external controls and display work well

Con's:
- "Tab Top" stinks
- keypad is flat and untextured
- pop-port is built in upside-down
- battery life is not stellar

If this phone did not have "Tab Top", I could have given it four and a half out of five, instead of a four. Otherwise, I am enjoying the features on this phone. Thanks again Nokia!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

honzik submitted this review of the Nokia N75:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

I've had my N75 for about 2 years now had have, overall, been quite pleased with it. It has been as much a PDA as a phone for me.

Pluses:

+ Good, bright readable inside screen.
+ Nice function transreflective outside screen.
+ Very convenient system of buttons which allow, among other things, changing the writing mode, selecting frequently used apps, accessing the menus.
+ Big, fat, buttons, which are great for texting.
+ Nice integration of the music playing features as well as other functionality (e.g., calendar) with the front screen and the side buttons.
+ Very good PC Suite integration, which allows for calendar appointments, pictures, videos, SMS, etc. to be synced with the PC using blue-tooth, IR, or cable.
+ Pretty good camera and flash.
+ Solid Symbian Operating system, which allows for some very nice apps (eg. Google Maps, Handy Safe, etc.) as well as capabilities.
+ Quad-band GSM (handy on trips to Europe) and 3G support in the US.

Minuses:

- No mini-jack.
- Really bad data/music cable arrangement.
- Stiff rocker selection and small "enter" button, which often causes the thumb to slip off and hit the "diamond" menu button.
- Mediocre battery life.
- Not enough native memory for the web browser.
- No GPS, which would have been nice.
- Somewhat dicey cell service - it seems to drop calls when switching from 3G to GSM networks.

What's needed:

This phone is good in so many respects but could still use an updating. If the newer version had some of the features in the N85, such as an somewhat larger OLED inner screen, mini-jack, micro USB connector/charger, as well as some slight tweaking of the button layout, you'd have a real winner.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The huge screen is great and makes it so much easier to use.

Pros:
-Large, bright screen
-Camera takes excellent pictures/videos
-Sound quality is amazing
-Music player is loud
-Never dropped a call; great call quality
-Large buttons make texting easy
-Easy to sort messages/etc.
-Large design, very sturdy
-Easy to manage calendar

Cons:
-No easy way to move message folders from phone memory to memory card (not a big deal)
-A bit slow at times
-Battery dies quickly
-Some delays while making videos
-Buttons on front a bit sensitive, I've had them go off during class, causing me to get my phone confiscated.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

winegeek submitted this review of the Nokia N75:

Overall rating: 2.5 (out of 5)

I got mine in August, only to have it die in December... pro: good music sound, big screen; con: horrible battery life, outside music player buttons.

If you do get an N 75, definitely read the reviews here to learn about optimizing battery life, which is what I did, but you may want to consider the 6650. I just got mine, so I can't offer a detailed review, but the battery life is wonderful!

My point in posting this review is to remind you to BACKUP and SYNC your data to a computer... none of your contacts are automatically saved to the SIM card, and I thought I lost all of mine! Luckily, the phone comes on sometimes, without the SIM card, and I was able to transfer my contacts.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Butterfly-L submitted this review of the Nokia N75:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

This phone has so many problems... And all from day one!

But, let's start with the positives:

PRO'S: The speakers work great. The screen is nice and large and colorful. Hence the 0.5 rating and that's generous.

Other than that...

CON'S: The smart-chip doesn't stay in place due to the placement of the battery - which is useless cause it's always dead!! The wonderful MP3 player plays by itself - that is if you can figure out how to download music to begin with. The center menu buttons are too close together, so good luck navigating through it without interruption. Don't get alot of dropped calls, although making calls isn't successful most of the time. The lovely large screen is pretty - when it's not blacked out or white?!? Sometimes the outside screen will work but not the inside one - That's a nice surprise to open up to! And the list goes on...

But - the overall gist is... If your going to spend your money on a cell phone, the $360.00 price tag on this one (Niki N75), is just simply a complete rip off!!

And if you've already bought it and are just now reading these messages... Don't waste your time calling for help cause you certainly won't get any!! So disappointing from such reputable companies!

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The phone is sturdy and has excellent sound. The screen is vibrant and bright. The phone is easy to work and the radio option is awesome since I'm a gym freak great to have. The mp3 in it is easy to work and maneuver in. the 2mp camera is sufficient and comes with a nice flash. No dropped calls at@t is my provider. Also the volume is fantastic and clear. The phone also has some weight to it and fits well in hand.

Great phone fantastic price for all the stuff you get. Lots more that this phone offers and so far cant be any more happier. I come from the Samsung A717 phone and what garbage that phone was...Great phone Nokia...

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Never had a phone that dies so fast.
Bulky, cheap plastic cover(cracked at hinge when opened quickly).
Heavy, big phone with tiny battery.
Annoying AT&T set up with difficult to change preset menu options.
Worse reception than previous models

If you are going to buy a nokia, I highly recommend their bar style phones over the flip options. The N75 lasted me less than a month; after having the same nokia 6682 for over 18 months.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

The camera is a 2 megapixel, it has a loud speaker, and the ability to load music onto it (if you have a memory code)

Cons:
Battery lasts a day. Internet slow. Camera has flash that makes pictures blue. Antenna is horrible. If you hit a side button or a music button, then you'll have to turn the phone off in order to see who is calling on the front screen. I have had 2 replacements for this phone, and both had the same issues.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

Keeper submitted this review of the Nokia N75:

Overall rating: 1.5 (out of 5)

I got the N75 upon recommendation by the Disability Dept. at AT&T due to low vision. Overall I actually like the phone. As others have said though it does take some getting used to with the menu's and such. However, once you have it its simple.

Pro's
* Huge bright display both inside and out
* Large buttons that are easy to find and use
* Totally customizable navigation
* Speech capabilities for almost everything
* Liked the camera and how it felt like a real camera
* Awesome sound for my music
* AT&T theme is good

Con's
* The outer casing is awful, the back falls off if dropped less then 1 foot onto a carpet, this caused the battery and Sim to fall out as well.
* Not durable at all, the casing will come off for any reason.
* Nokia theme is one of the worst I've ever seen. White text on a white transparent background.
* All the speak features are not put together you have to search for them when you don't have the speak feature going. Useless then if your totally blind and can't see the screen.
* Address book is hard to move around
* To send a message have to go to the address book to get the number
* Cannot organize the images that are in My Stuff into folders. All images on the phone are viewable even if they're private.
* Poor battery life. I do not use the data feature but do talk a lot on the phone and the charge won't even last me for 3 hours.

If you are a sighted person this phone is good for you. It does have lots are features that are really a step up from the competition. However, if you are blind I do not recommend this phone. The software to make it totally accessible and will read everything on the screen is an average of $250.00 extra on top of the price of the phone. Also, if you accidentally knock it off you will guaranteed break the case. It will come off and you will have to put it back.

I'm getting a Razor 3xx next lets see you that goes.

Bye bye N75 see ya, don't wanna be ya.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

aravis submitted this review of the Nokia N75:

Overall rating: 1 (out of 5)

Giving this phone a 0.5 rating is probably being too generous.

This phone hasn't worked since the day I got it.

PROS:
-It sometimes works

CONS:
- It randomly shuts itself off for no reason sometimes when I try to answer a call.
- It drops a lot of my calls.
- The battery is almost dead even if you talk on it for more than an hour even when it's fully charged.
- I just shut the phone (didn't slam it shut, didn't drop it) and the hinge in the middle cracked and now it won't shut properly. And it cracking on it's own voided the warranty.
- It freezes a lot
- The menu is slow

I have always loved Nokia phones and have always regretted when I got something else. But this is the one phone I hate with an utter passion. I can't do anything because I've only had it a few months and now the warranty is voided because it broke on its own. I paid a lot of money for a piece of crap that didn't even last 5 months and now I'm stuck unless I want to pay full price for a brand new phone.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

chull submitted this review of the Nokia N75:

Overall rating: 2 (out of 5)

I bought the N75 and used it for 4 months, but I just could not afford to keep using it - it had too many shortcomings to overcome it's great features. The biggest problem was the battery life - I rarely could make the battery last through 6PM.

Here are the things I liked about the N75:
- Web browser
- 3G UMTS throughput
- ability to call and browse web (or tether) simultaneously
- useful camera with flash
- small size

Dislikes:
- battery life
(8 hours standby + 30 min phone + 45 min web)
- music player - I wanted to remove this annoying app, so it would not accidentally play when in my pocket
- media browser unable to email pictures
- charging with USB was problematic: only worked occasionally
- no themes and Nokia theme editor (Carbide.ui) did not support N75

This was my second SymbianOS phone (after a 3650) and while I like Symbian, I do not think that it has significantly improved over the years. I am now returning to my Treo, which had gathered dust in a drawer for the last several months - it is long in the tooth, and does not allow me to use the web while on a call. But I can actually make the call at the end of the day and that is the most important thing about a phone after all.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

ls1dreams submitted this review of the Nokia N75:

Overall rating: 2 (out of 5)

Overall, I was excited to receive a new phone because my 5-year old samsung was dying.

A friend recommended the N75 to me because I could get a smart phone in a small package. That was a big mistake.

I'll start with the few things I liked about it, then jump to the real meat:

PROS:

- beautiful screen

- S60 operating system can do a lot ( I played super nintendo games on an emulator on there ).

CONS: (in order of importance)

- battery life is miserable, but this is pretty common for 3g phones. Even debranding it and forcing it into GSM only mode I still have to recharge every night.

- it is sloooooooow. The processor is only a 220mhz processor, so the S60 operating system CRAWLS. Pressing the soft key to send a text message takes around 5 full seconds to get to the screen.

- build quality is total crap. specifically:
1. SIM card gets loose from the slot and you have to reseat
2. Battery cover is loose/wobbly
3. entire phone frame is plastic and cheap. I dropped the phone from only about 1-2 feet from the ground and the entire phone fell apart - the battery flew out, the SIM card popped out, and the frame of the phone came unsnapped. yuck.

- weird hangups - phone randomly turns off during calls, freezes up and battery needs to be taken out, etc.

- bulky phone - 1" thick and heavy

It's a real lemon of a phone. Tons of potential, but they clearly didn't spend much time fixing the bugs.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

smithaudio submitted this review of the Nokia N75:

Overall rating: 3 (out of 5)

I purchased this phone and had it's use for two weeks before the front LCD display died. It was sent back to Nokia and I was told it was from abuse. There wasn't a scratch on the phone. I was taking great care to keep it in good condition and it was getting better care than any other phone I have ever owned. Long story short the phone has been returned for repair and has been gone for three months. I understand that it has recently been shipped back to my dealer with an $80+ bill for the repair. At this moment I'm not that pleased with the phone or the company standing behind the product that was only two weeks old. Hope to get it back soon, not happy about the repair cost, but if this lasts longer this time I do like the features it has. Most likely will be the last Nokia phone I buy.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

hex2bit submitted this review of the Nokia N75:

Overall rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Summary:
This phone is both feature rich and cheap, making it an awesome value. You can pick up one of these from Internet carriers for next to nothing. I got mine for free after rebate, along with a free year of Napster and a 2GB memory card. You can't beat that!

Although there's a few areas that could be improved, the important areas (phone use, Internet, bluetooth) work very well. I can live with the average camera and learn its software nuances.

Positives:
- Nokia's S60 3rd edition!
- So far very stable
- 3G (although not the fastest in my area)
- Not crippled much by AT&T
- Reception
- Sound quality for both ear piece and speaker phone.
- Bluetooth works well, with no problems connecting to my computer or GPS module.
- Decent web browser for a phone
- Lots of software available, although much of it is commercial (see negatives).

The so so's:
- Camera, average among current phones but Nokia is known for better cameras... like their 5mp offerings.
- Memory for running applications
- Processor speed
- Included software. I would like to see a better media player for a start. They use Real Player for video and AT&T bundles their own music player that's pretty limited.

Negatives:
- Hard to find FREE software for some things that are easier to find for Windows Mobile. Media players, games, etc. There's always Java though...
- The games they include aren't even full versions!
- Vibrate isn't very powerful. It's difficult to notice.
- It came with version 1.0 PC Suite software, which I could not get to connect with the phone. Their current release from their web site works perfectly. Oddly, they don't list the n75 on their web site when selecting a phone for the software download?!?!
- Why does hitting the C (cancel) button in the menus try to delete the menu item?!?! It should do the same as the "back" option.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)

1up submitted this review of the Nokia N75:

Overall rating: 4 (out of 5)

From ATT still locked and branded it's a great phone but once you debrand it, you have 60 mbs free instead of the 40. Also, once debranding lets you switch to UMTS only or GSM

Pros: Symbian. Completely amazing OS, edit so much, there is literally an infinite selection of powerful apps and games you can get.
Browser, download a slew of files from ANY website simultaneously, then hit "Hide" and continue browsing as you download. Branded and unbranded.
Screen is big&bright.
Call quality, is the best, I live in a area not on the ATT map, but I have usually 5 bars, (2 bars w/my samsung phone.)
Camera takes good videos.
Integrated Media player is the norm, Works fine and goes in landscape mode and regular, and streams. But I recommend downloading a player called Core Player from Corecodec, you can download any mpg, mpeg, little movie from the net to your phone not even using a wap site, just regular HTTP.
60 mb free when unbranded.
Stereo speakers on the side, you can shut the phone while you're on a call, Sync won't let me. I love Nokias.
Multitasking! As with other Nokia Smartphones, I can be chatting on Mig33 yahoo/aim, hold the menu button down to switch to a different app or game/media player. So chat as you browse, literally.
Buttons, on the side you have dedicated camera button, and taking pictures is super easy.
Cover display, you can do alot on this without ever opening the phone. Read texts, take videos/pictures, listen to music, profiles, different things.

Cons: Battery life. Although I have my screen as dim as it can get and it's still PLENTY bright enough, I never notice it being too dim, in fact I wish It could go lower. This saves on battery, also, GSM mode saves tremendously, all in all I get about a day with playing some games, surfing the net for about two hours, and some calls.
Camera: Though a good video taker, a green tint seems to hint at all my photos, however turning on fluorescent mode helps this.

Camera's green tint.

(Follow link to rate this review or report it to us as inappropriate.)
