great "phone"

Jul 30, 2005 by yeahright

I work for a Verizon dealer so I have owned a lot of phones in the past 3 years. I live on the edge of coverage and most phones drop calls or say no service at my house. My moto 730 would show 2 bars but drop the call as soon as i connected, my lg4400 worked ok, but dropped calls occasionally, my 4500 didn't work at all, my 6000 worked fairly well but you had to be in the right spot of the house. Recently my wife has been using the 6100 and was constantly dropping calls here at home. I have had no problems at all with my 8000 so i upgraded and gave her my phone. I must say that after reading reviews that some people posted i was a little hesitant, but guess what this phone has not dropped a call in my house yet!(had 5 days) So I have no idea how people are saying this phone has poor reception. By the way my friend's moto shows 2 bars at my house while my phone only shows 1 or 0 bars, yet i can make and receive calls fine and he has not been able to make more than a 2 minute phone call at my house without dropping a call??? Don't understand that one, but my old moto did the same thing, this phone just seems to work better even while showing a lower signal strength? I choose this phone because I figured the motorola 815 would probably perform similar to my friends motorola, and the build quality of the motorolas over the past 2 years has been terrible. I sell phones, so i see what comes back for service and that made me stay away from the 815. The 8100 loads vcast aps and mobile web even faster than my 8000 did which surprised me and and the smaller size is a great. Can't waite for the mp3 software fix in a few weeks! Great job lg, keep making solid phones, and I will keep buying them!

pros
feels solid
easy verizon menu
great reception
excellent camera!
bluetooth for headsets!
lg quality!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cons
disabled mp3 player( to be fixed or hacked around shortly)
stupid voice command system, liked the voicedialing on 8000 better

i made the switch

Jul 29, 2005 by tortuga

i made the switch like some have from the 815 to the 8100 and right off the bat i have to say the 8100 is DEFINITELY a better built phone in terms of construction and sturdiness. i was always afraid something on the 815 would break off and the damn top portion of the 815 would move at the hinge point looser than a street hooker in Thailand. anyways i've been happy with the 8100 so far in terms of size, useability, and sturdiness. i do miss some of the little things on the 815 that i don't have on the 8100 and that's the ability to change the sound of the keytones, the bigger screen and the # of cooler ringtones but that stuff is minor. the 8100 is much more user friendly and being that i had a VX6000 previously, the 8100 is a piece of cake to use. another thing i'm not to thrilled about is the RED header and footer Verizon is using. there's no way to change the color of that either, but word out on the street is all Verizon phones will be standardized to this format, kinda like a personal identity for Verizon phones.
the volume issue was apparent today when i was talking to a friend and the volume kept getting faint from time to time during the conversation and i then realized holy sh!t, people weren't joking about the issue!! it really does suck when that happened, but after reading about the TTY to full fix, the Tools - 5 - 5 fix and the auto volume off fix it seems to be LOUDER. i have yet to see the problem reoccur, if so i will post to inform the general public of this problem. overall, i really do love the phone much more than my 815 and my trusty, faithful VX6000 which i really liked.

Toy or Phone or 8100? the best of both worlds!!!

Jul 18, 2005 by devious1

Well from what i gathered on the phone i couldn't give it a full 5 for the factor of what i have that i don't like on the phone but i will give it a 4.5 for the shear factor it is awesome and extremly well built. and the quality is like i expected
but for the reasons that i don't like it

Digital only
camera in low light is really grainy,
menu style sucks,
red bars on the top, i like change, i cant change that.
2 difficult for me 2 get into set ringers in my sounds to work as ringers.

Now for the things that i like
the camera is awesome in good light i can print a 4x6 pic thats cool. just don't expect to replace a digital camera.
speaker phone is loud and clear.
ringers loud and clear.
love the stereo speakers.
signal bars don't meen a whole lot on this
THE ALARM CLOCK IS LOUDER THAN MY ACTUAL ALARM CLOCK

all together i have not played with all the features in the phone probably never will but hey it works.
if you want a toy that works as a phone and is good at both this is a definat must..

Great Phone

Jul 17, 2005 by aNoid

I have sat here and read everything people have posted, as I usually do, since I am employed by a wireless carrier that offers this phone. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out which one. I keep reading here that this phone has poor reception. Ok, first of all, its not the phone, its the network. The phone can only work as good as the network allows. If you get a phone that has poor reception, and other people with the same carrier has good reception, there is a problem with that specific phone. You can take the phone back and swap it out for another one. I was one of the people testing this phone, and it works wonders over all other phones out. I have had lg phones, going back to the vx111 (analog). The 3100, 3200, 6000 and 6100. I have also had the samsung a670, audiovox 9900 (which still has no match) and a couple other ones as well. This phone is the best thing going. Get over yourselves and remember, reception is network, not phone, and right now, lg makes the best devices out there, bar none.

Best LG yet...and almost perfect overall..

Jul 17, 2005 by StingSR23

Pros:
Bluetooth
Beautiful screen
Great camera
Solid construction and design
Ability to view messages on outer screen.
Ability to add more memory
MP3 functionality (Coming Soon!!)

Cons:
Music on Demand service not available yet.
Weird allocation of phone's memory.
Inability to load mp3's from SD card as ringtones

I'm a Verizon member from NJ and have been using an LG VX7000 prior to upgrading to the VX8100.

The VX8100 is an improvement over the VX7000. The VX8100 now has bluetooth in addition to speakerphone. I purchased a bluetooth headset, paired it and it works great for me.

The 8100 also had one minor improvement that was a major improvement for me. The 7000 had no vibrating text alert (other than quiet mode) but the 8100 has a vibrating text alert in normal mode in addition to an audio alert.

This phone has a wonderful inside screen that looks amazing.

Text messaging is a breeze and I love that I can see my text and pix messages that I received without even having to open the phone.

Phone sound and signal seem equal to what I had on the VX7000 so thats a plus for me as I had good signal and service in my area.

I can't comment on VCAST because I am not signed up for it but will try it later on. I have used it on other phones and I do enjoy so having it available is a plus.

My only concerns are the supposed mp3 player that is not active. I'm told it may go active when Music on Demand starts in 6-8 months. Also, the memory allocation is weird. Original specs stated the phone had 512 MB but I'm not seeing anything near that much available at the moment. Only thing I can think is the numbers were wrong or that Verizon saved that memory for Music on Demand. I also wish I could use mp3's as ringtones without having to resort to hacking the phone.

I absolutely love this phone. Remember, I'm coming from the 7000 so to me this phone is a wonderful upgrade and I am glad I upgraded when I did.

I recommend this phone to everyone!

Outstanding phone...My first LG

Jul 14, 2005 by PlayboyPenguin

Well, I must say I have been won over by this phone. I have never been a fan of LG in the past but this phone is a new beast. The phone has a great look, a great feel, and great features. No more is the LG the bulky, boxy, flimsy feeling, cracker jacks box phone I used to consider it.

PROS:

*Strudy solid construction
*Very attractive design (love the hi-gloss blue)
*Side controls seem high quality
*Size (smaller than the 8000 or moto e815)
*Stereo side mounted speakers
*1.3 megapix camera (w/video)
*front controls for viewing txt & Pix msg with
phone closed
*Beautiful crisp outer screen (best I have seen)
*Beautiful crisp main screen (although smaller than e815)
*Rings and vibrates at same time
*great reception

CONS:

*No cover on headphone jack (petty but bothered me)
*A little bulky if you like slender phones but still
smaller than 8000 or moto e815.
*Speakerphone could be more versatile
*Poor and boring graphics
*MP3 is supposedly crippled but it is a phone not an iPod
*Bluetooth crippled but still usable for a phone

LG has finally made a believer out of me. This phone is easily a 9 out of 10.

PERFECT!

Jul 17, 2005 by coasterguy

I think this phone is great. I had switched to cingular for the razor and am so glad I returned it and came back to my senses. I used to own the vx7000. I feel like the 8100 is a great step up from that which was also a drama free phone.
I am not gonna go through and list all of the pros and cons. Frankly I think this phone is quite perfect in most aspects. I have absolutely no complaints so far. Try and you'll see.

Phone first.
Camera (for fun) second.
Mp3 (for fun) third.

It is not a camera or an ipod. it is a phone. remember that people.

LG does it again! 1-5 it gets a 10!

This phone is awesome! I have had many different phones in the past few years, motorola, samsung, and of course lg. the lg phones I have had are by far the best. the best looking, the best cameras, the most durable, and by far the best menue system.

Pros: good camera
perfect size and shape (for me anyways)
quality of construction
both of the screens are nice and crisp
mp3 player (soon to be functional)
dual side-mounted speakers (sounds awesome)
side buttons are soooooo darn handy
memory card slot
and of course bluetooth!

Cons: honestly, nothing so far

get this phone! you won't be dissappointed! don't pay attention to the horrible reviews (the 0's and the 1's) they are just motorola die hards that hate lg for making better phones)

Ahhh, the almost perfect phone.

Jul 18, 2005 by flwright64

I picked up this phone three days ago at the Verizon store. Saturday night to Monday morning, heavy picture taking and VCast useage has managed to knock the battery down only by half. But, I live in a populated area that gives me 3-5 bars of signal wherever I go.

The camera works as expected. Grainy low light pictures are common to all cameras, digital or film, and not worth mentioning except you may need to read the manual to discover this phone has a flash.

The voice command button on the lower left activates the flashlight next to the camera lense or you can configure the phone to always have it on if you are taking a picture.

The VCAST system works great on this phone and I attribute my satisfaction to living in a Wireless Broadband area (1X/EV). If you don't see [EV] at the top of your LCD menu, VCAST will be frustrating.

The only difference I noticed compared to the Motorola 815 is the LG graphics are simpler, not quite as "pretty". LCD bezels are identical in size. I don't see any reason to claim they aren't.

3D graphics games are impressive. Check out Asphault Urban GT in Get-It-Now. Mapquest Traffic, even more impressive.

The only thing the Samsung A530 had over this phone besides a one-piece battery and cover assembly (the LG has a separate cover) is I like small phones (weird since I'm 6'3").

Other than that, this phone is almost perfect.
