Expensive but absolutely worth it

May 6, 2005 by waterboy

I struggled for a bit over the hefty price but after a month of use I don't have any regrets. I feel comfortable recommending this as a great combo / smart phone.

Whether it's the best bang for the $...well that depends on how strongly you feel about the fashion and the lack of Wi-fi. I don't think there is anything else out there I'd rather have but I was willing to trade smaller size over wi-fi (HP) and Palm hassles I've suffered through in the past(TREO).

Pros

Push email works. I'm using a third party internet provider with T-mobile t-zones.

The keyboard is actually usable. I expected to remove it but find myself using it as the primary method of input.

The screen is phenomenal.

The 1 gig expansion slot is what sealed the deal for me and hasn't disappointed.

Everything I need in a small, sharp package.

Signal strength is better than most phones I've had though it appears a bit weaker than my Nokia 3660 indoors. I WILL say this is more than made up for with the lack of dropped calls. I think I can finally place the blame for my steady dose of dropped calls driving around town on my past phone rather than the network (T-mo).

The software is stable. One reset in a month...during a software update from the SE website. Otherwise it's been flawless

CONS

I burn 3/4 of the battery daily. I wouldn't call it heavy use (I'm 1500 min / month plus PDA functions) but it requires nightly charging or keeping a car charger handy.

No Wi-fi Not a bid deal to me but may become more of a "bummer" as this technology becomes more widespread.

Almost Perfect

I have to agree with kholubar51! This phone is amazing. I am a very picky person who has owned every phone. I used to change my phone once every couple months because I was never satisfied. Not any more! The p910 is like I said, amazing.

Pros-

Beautiful Screen
Great PIM functions
Symbian OS
Great 3rd party apps
I love the little flip keyboard
Opera Internet Works great
Bluetooth sync, print, and file exchange are all awsome
When flip is closed works just like a regular phone, not an awkward PDA/Phone
Upgradeable Memory Stick to 1GB
Small compared to other PDA/Phone
Great Signal Strength
Pretty good MP3 player
Great Speaker Phone
Video record as long as your memory card can hold or small clips for mms

Cons-

No Back light for flip Keys
Camera is garbage compared to most newer camera phones
no windows media player playback while on internet(not a big deal but my Hp6315 did it)

Well thats really all I can think of to complain about. Other than these small imperfections, this phone is all around great. If it had a megapixel camera with back lit flip keys I would easily give it a 5. Right now this phone is at the top of its class.

The operating system makes the phone

The phone itself is not all that. It is big and bulky especially with the flip attached (it is easily removed). The flip is really too small for anything other than SMS. The battery will not last an entire day of heavy useage. Reception is good but not great. Nokia phones and even the newer Motorola phones are much better reception wise. You will not pull in a signal in weak areas. Many items on the touch screen are too small for an average finger and you end up pulling out the stylus. I use the bluetooth for a headset and it has an annoying habit of losing its connection every couple of calls and then suddenly works properly again.

The operating system is great. I have used Windows and Palm based OS and they lock the phone up on a regular basis. The Symbian OS only locked up once in about 6 weeks of use. Outlook, including notes and tasks sync easily and accurately. The email system works well with POP accounts. MS Word and Excel files are easily moved to the phone and viewed. Just drag and drop from within PC screen, make changes and drag back.

Overall, I like the phone better than the Treo and Blackberry models but it is far from perfect.

Its a perfect phone, with anything you will need in this tiny size. There are just some minor thing still missing which will be changed in the next P. So if u didnt get one yet just go on and buy one.
