Why would anyone buy a phone that is not Tri-mode?

Aug 10, 2004 by y2urak

I upgraded to this GSM (digital) phone with Cingular, from my old Nokia CDMA (analog) phone which worked fine but was dated. But the LG C1300 didn't work out, and I had to return it to Cingular. Problem was constantly dropped calls, very fuzzy reception, calls fading in and out (the old 'can you hear me now?...can you hear me now?...i can hear you, can you hear me? routine), or no service - and this all happened not out in the sticks but in the heart of a major metro area!

Yesterday, August 9, I read an article in the Wall Street Journal that clearly explained the problem. Article pointed out that cell phone users around the country are exasperated to find out that their fancy new phones don't provide as reliable coverage as their old clunker cell phones. The culprit is providers like AT&T and Cingular, who push GSM service with spotty coverage, yet don't push 'Tri-mode' phones that can switch to back-up analog network when caller enters one of these ubiquitous GSM service deadzones. The article stated that none of the newer phones offered by Cingular are Tri-mode - they are all straight GSM only phones. So, since these phones do not offer analog backup, when you enter one of the GSM coverage holes, it's 'sorry, Charlie' - the phone won't switch to backup analog to save the day. Cingular does offer two crummy old models - an Erickson and a Nokia - that are 'GAIT' phones and offer GSM with analog backup, but Cingular does not push them at all. Does Cingular have a corporated death-wish, or what?

So, while the C1300 is a nifty phone, I gotta give it a zero rating, because it just didn't work worth a darn with Cingular's GSM network. I mean, say you're a guy looking for a great woman to marry and have a big family with, and then you meet a great woman, but she wants zero kids, even though she may be a great lady, you gotta move on, right?

As for me, I recently found myself a girl with 'Tri-mode' capability, and we're really happy together!

Cute but didn't work for me

Neat little phone but just didn't work for me. Most frustrating part is the volume buttons on the side right where your fingers go, so kept accidentally hitting volume buttons. Reception not as good but may not be the phones fault. Switching to Nokia 3595 in hopes of better reception. Reception is more important to me then all the bells and whistles. Not that this phone had a lot of bells and whistles.

Cute Phone....Service Sucks

Jul 25, 2004 by mz_elise

Unlike many people who previously owned a phone on the old network, this is my second phone on the GSM network (I've had my Nokia 3590 for over a year). My little Nokia had good service (it dropped calls less than once a week, and the service was never really spotty). Since I've had this phone (purchased about 4 days ago), I've had atleast 5 dropped calls, and many of the calls I was able to keep ended up being pretty fuzzy, and I was barely able to hear the person on the other line. The phone is very compact and cute, which I like, but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone with GoPhone (I paid $149.99 for it, and it is really not worth it), but if you can get it for free, and don't have any really important calls to make on it, go ahead and get it.

A great phone

The only problem is the signal goes in and out but that would be because of not enough towers.it is really great on graphics and games. For someone who just needs a cell phone for talking and playing games this would be a great phone. I would recommend it.

Bad Phone

This Phone is a very very bad phone i do not recommend it to ne one. If you are geting a phone spend a little more money and get the Motorola V400 it is worth your money.

Cons:

There is no battery life.

The signal strength is Not good at all not even in a place like NYC where every phone works.

It is hard to see in daylight

You can't set it to vibrate at a medium volume it is either full volume and vibrate or just vibrate without volume.

I've had Cingular for 3 years now and it has been great. I had the Nokia 3595 and That phone is also great it is defiantly better then the LG C1300

If you are using this phone to make calls or text. This phone is a great basic phone.

Pros:

1. small, and light
2. nice color screen
3. easy menu
4. durable
5. loud ringer, and speaker volume

Cons:

1. battery drains quick
2. lack of features
3. alot of dropped calls with full towers. don't know if that is a cingular problem or the phone

Small and elegant, but has some issues

This is a simple to use, small, light and generally elegant flip phone, with good reception.
Some useful comments for those interested in getting it:
-It looks nice and has a fast and responsive user interface (I found the LG interface much better than the Samsung x426). It is easy to move from menu to menu by pressing the shown number (or scroll around and press select if you want).
-Some useful functions are hidden away under three menu levels (ie Calculator, Alarm, Calendar). There is no way to assign a shortcut. There are built-in shortcuts to internet, text messaging, contacts, instant messaging.
-It is easy to put the phone to vibrate, even without opening it.
-The light on the outside lights red if there is a waiting message (voice or text) but not when you have missed calls.
-You cannot use most of the phone's functions when talking on the phone. (ie you cannot play games if you have a headset and are having a boring conversation.) But you can take a 'note' and later save it as a phone number.
-The volume control for the games is tied to the volume of the ringer. So if you lower the volume while playing and forget to increase it afterward, the ringer will be quiet. Also, if the phone is set to loudest ring, some menu confirmation will elicit a loud sound from the phone (ie entering a new contact.) This is annoying.

Do not buy this phone!

I have never felt strongly enough about a product to actually write a review on, but this phone stinks! I recently traded in my cheap old Nokia phone thinking that I was upgrading a bit. I am very sorry that I made that mistake. The main problems that I am experiencing with the phone is that the ring tone is not nearly loud enough. I miss every incoming call that I have because I can't hear it when it is in my purse. The other problem is the amount of dropped calls. The reception that I had on my last phone was far better. I now get dropped calls in areas that I have always had a signal in with my previous phone. (Northeast Georgia area Cingular provider)
The only thing worth mentioning on this phone is the cute mirror on the front and bright graphics!

Do Not Buy

Is a cute Entry Level phone.

The rest is not even worth mentioning.

A shame for LG.
