Good Phone!

Apr 6, 2005 by mmcnier

I came to this phone after using a Moto v180. Its practically the same phone, but with a camera. They say that this phone is entry level, but they are wrong. Who ever heard of an entry level camera phone?

Pros:
-Camera is good for quick snapshots. Image quality on phone isn't good, but when transferred to PC, its much better.
-Nice form, weight, shape
-MANY customizable settings
-MP3 Ringtones are a plus. More memory than Moto v180.
-Buttons have a nice feel
-External Caller ID
-USB Port (could be useful if needed, but see below)
-Swapped Answer/Hang-up Buttons
-Multiple numbers per name (must have entry saved to phone, not sim. in phonebook menu, edit entry & go to "more". Then select "add new: phone number" also must set phonebook to "view: primary contact info" You can set which number to use as primary)

Cons:
-Faceplate scratches EXTREMELY easily. (a feather could scratch this thing)
-Screen size is 128x128. Industry standard is 128x160.
-Ringtone speaker is in inconvenient location & is easily muffled (same location as v180)
-iTap instead of T9 text input
-USB Port-kinda useless unless you have Mobile Phone Tools.
-Cingular made sure to add "MediaMall" to the main menu. They might as well have amde the link say "Click here to spend more money on our crap!"

This phone is great for people who don't need a bunch of "business" applications, i.e. Bluetooth or PC suite. Its perfect for people who want fun & functionality.

Terrible phone, breaks very easily

Feb 27, 2005 by jaw213

This phone is awful. It is the most delicate phone I have ever used. I dropped it on a carpet in my apartment during the second week I had it and the screen has been broken ever since. My old nokia was able to withstand being dropped for 4 years straight and continued to work.

When I called to get a new phone they (Cingular, who has terrible customer service by the way) they said that any damage done to the screen absolutely has to have been caused by the customer. So either I had to pay for a new phone even though I was within my 30 days or send it off to a Motorola center to fix it which costs $100 and then you are without a phone for 2 weeks.

Bottom line - unless you are very very gentle with your cell phone I would absolutely not get this phone.

Beyond that: the speaker phone doesn't work great, it is hard for the other person to hear you when you are using it. The battery also doesn't last for very long. It drops calls on a regular basis as well. I live in New York City so reception should not be a problem.

Impressed with build and features

Owning and using the Moto V220 I have the following comments:
1. V220 is small and light, but comfortable in the hand and when talking. Menus and display have very readable color graphics. Menus have about 4 to 6 icons per screen, and go no more than 3 deep. Case has some give at the hinges to prevent cracks.
2. The software is excellent and worth the price if you have a large phone book the move over; want mp3 ring tones (my 40s phone ringer MP3 ringtone like real); uploading/ downloading photos; synch to a calendar.
3. The voice quality is excellent. Digital voice processing is fast and full. The speakerphone is plenty loud for use in the car
4. With my carrier I get 4 bars all the time.
5. Power management is good. Charges in 2 hours and lasts 3 days with fair use. Motorola has improved power management.
6. I like the separate keys on the key pad.
7. Photos are a nice to have good to take a quick picture. Download to PC with software gives fair detail. Buying a 3+ megapixal camera with optical lens and flash will definately give better photos.
8. Users I talked to before buying the phone had no complaints with Motorola flip phones. Most used them over 2 years.
Cons:
1. I personally don't like silver painted electronics. It is prone to chips, scuffs. I find a black eBay front and back cover improves the phone for $10.
2. I really needed to read the manual. The phone has many features and is intuitive once I was familiar with it.
3. Many of the stated features of the v220 are only available with the software and drivers that are not bundled with the phone. Users need to ask for, get or buy for $30 to use some amazing features.
I'm satisfied with this phone; it was worth the wait to trade up to a cell phone that does so much.

i would not reccomend qettinq this fone..

pro`s ->
- speakerphone
- real music ringtones
- good zoom on pictures
- holds tons of messages

con`s ->
- signal isn't too great!
- pictures don't look too good either! they are very fuzzy/blurry
- speaker is on back of phone to where you can't really hear the ringtone unless it is lying on its face
- battery goes dead really fast
- if you set it up to where when someone calls it shows there picture, the picture is really small to where you can barely tell who it is!
- it's very confusing on how to work
- has no flash on the camera

as you see there is more con's then pro's! if i could take this phone back i would definetly do so!

* if anyone knows how or if there is a voice recorder on this ( not for the phonebook ) please email me & explain! *

Decent little phone

Feb 4, 2005 by danielf22

For the price this phone isnt bad. Its kinda small, got a decent battery, and a speakerphone on it. But to be honest- for those of us who prefer high-end phones this is not for you. The camera on this phone, is standard which means crappy, the display is one of the worst displays I have ever seen, I dont see how they claim its 65k colors. The reception on this phone leaves loads to be desired. And the phone just kinda feels cheesy. Practically the worst part about it is its memory capabilities. This phone has absolutely no memory, you can store only a few pictures or ringtones, which extremely limits you, and only allows 7 voice dials. But if you want a cheap entry level camera phone then this ones not that bad.

motorola could have done better

Ive been having this phone for 2 weeks it is horrible my calls are always dropped (cingular) and the camera is a piece of garbage and i can not hear the ring tones i just think motorola could have done alot better

Terrible call quality

Jan 19, 2005 by cottonih

My wife and I got v220's with new Cingular service. We consistently get choppy connections and frequently had dropped calls. I was ready to switch to a different carrier, but tried the Sony z500a in a Cingular store and noticed night and day difference in call quality. Now in the process of trading equipment.

pros:
- best feature set of the free phones.

cons: - see subject!

Excellent Phone for the Price

I have read many negative reviews about the V220 and I ask myself why these people expected the performance and features of a Motorola V3 Razr out of maybe $150 dollar phone?

First of all, the V220 has a USB port which is a HUGE benefit since that means you can transfer pictures/music to and from the phone with ease. All you need is a USB to flat mini cable which can be found many places online for less than $10. You can also find the Motorola drivers and phone software if you Google hard enough or search a file sharing network.

It has a speakerphone as well which is not the greatest but it is actually quite good for the price. It is not horrible at all and actually sounds very clear and is plenty loud. The sound quality is not a perfect 10 but I would give it a 7 out of 10.

I got this phone for $19.99 from Cingular on a contract upgrade and am VERY impressed with it. It has a camera as well which takes 640x480 images which end up being around 45k a piece and can store around 30 images on the phone at high quality. They don't look great on the phone display but when you download them they look almost as good as a digital camera which speaks a lot for the phone.

Overall it IS a cheap phone with some major features. Do not expect to be blown away but rather look at it that you are getting a lot more than you money's worth if you get it for free or very cheap. I personally love it and would recommend it to anyone who sticks to the free phones on upgrade like I do.

I am more than impressed with it considering the price. Most of the expensive phones don't even have a speakerphone which is what sold me on this to spend $20 on the upgrade.

I give it 4 out of 5 as it is not the best but for the money it is incredible.

This phone is great

I dunno what some of you are complaining about to be honest. I own this phone, it is my first flip phone and out of all the phone's i've had, this is my favourite. It has about 55 different ring tones to choose from and the colour is amazing. the only times i have had problems with the screen is when i threw it again a wall...accidentally. the speakers are of a great quality, the custom texts are overall amazing. yes, the camera is a lil fuzzy and that can be a pain in the ass but if you compare the pros to the cons, you find this phone has more pros than cons. there have been no bugs in my phone or anything like that. My signal is kinda crappy but that's because i live in a secluded area in england with no phone wires around. when i get into a highstreet, however, my signal bar is filled immediately and works amazingly. the fact that when the phone rings, it vibrates too is a pro. that way ya can tell when your phone is ringing if ya cant hear it. this is a really good phone and i recommend you buy it.

Worst Phone Ever

I have only had this phone for 4 months and I am already on my second replacement phone. The screen just dies. I can't use the camera or the call display or anything, and this is without dropping it. My old Nokia went for a swim in the tub and still works fine. Although the phone is small and a flip, it has bugs that need to be worked out. I would never buy a Motorola again.
