A just right phone
Coming from some 'slightly' higher end phones... the Nokia is perfect. I'd decided to go low tek and get a phone that does exactly what I want it to and nothing more. After purchasing an E398 and then moving up to the HTC Wizard, I realized that the old saying is true. "Buy a phone to make calls, a computer to run programs and a walkman to listen to music".
The 5140 is everything I could ever ask for, it's tough as nails and semi good looking to boot. Few moving parts make for great reliability and keep the design simple. The compass and FM radio are a great bonus.
My summary, if you're looking for a phone with a ton of features and all the cutting edge software... maybe you should read the spec sheet before you buy the 5140 and make a terrible mistake. For what this phone was designed to do, it does it flawlessly. I could not have asked for more.

I wanted a series 40 Nokia bar phone with the ability to play mp3 ringtones, and that's exactly what this is. I also like the speakerphone's loudness, much better than other non-Nokia phones I've owned. I don't need the compass, but it seems to work fine; the flashlight is weak but good for the car or purse; the fitness coach is a joke, and I don't think the thermometer is very accurate, but the bubble leveler is cool, and handy. Very rugged; and the face plate is easy to get off and on. I've already bought a yellow one via Ebay, and it looks very cool! And the way the top comes off makes it super easy to put on a lanyard. Camera is so-so quality. Never use the radio so can't comment on that. Battery life is so-so.

Hardy Phone
This is a durable phone. I like the rubber casing, outstanding reception and Nokia quality (which after trying others know it to be very high quality).
PROs:
1. durable (hubby tried to throw it when it was mad... it did not break. NOTE: will break in half when mad person attempts to snap in half.)
2. great reception (I live in hilly area [foothills of Appalachian Mtn]. Where calls are drop by other phones I can keep connected.
3. Kewl toys for those looking for them (like compass)
4. Sold unlocked
5. Water proof to a point
CONs:
1. No Bluetooth
2. lousy ringtones (not looking for fancy just loud)
GREAT PHONE. Only wish more covers were available in USA. I bought my red cover in UK.
Works Hard & Plays Hard
Lost count of the number of phones Iâve broken in the past, but this phone stands the test. Sturdy and strong, it also has the walkie talkie feature that looks set to really take off in future. If you like the outdoor life then this really is the phone for you. Thereâs even a digital compass so youâll know youâre always heading in the right direction. Bought this from FoneShop.com and they gave me (free) the Xpress-on GPS housing (a satellite positioning gizmo) so you can never have the excuse that you donât know where you are. Love it.
Nokia 5140
I have had the 5140 for about a month now. I like the phone for its durability and reception. We live at the coast and weather is at best a challenge. The compass works well, FM radio good. the camera is OK. The display is less than I would like but I bought the phone for the durability and nokia reputation. I like the flashlight. The ability to change shells on the phone is a plus when you are an outdoor lover who is a tad rough on the ol cell phones. Oregon rains a fair amount and the rubber shell is just the ticket. All in all the features are somewhat behind in technology as far as bluetooth etc but would not consider that to be the deciding factor. The reception on the phone is excellent and this is exactally what I was looking for.
Great Phone!
had this for about a week now, so far I'm really happy, bought the north american (850/1800/1900) version off the internet for about $250, the lowest price out right now (Jan 05). I needed a phone thats a lot more durable, as I have broke every phone I've owned. You can buy the covers for fairly cheap and just replace them when you break them. The phone is less waterproof than I was hoping but still much better than a normal phone. The display is kida lame, its like a lot of the other nokias, I also have a 3120 and its the same screen. Its not that bad just behind its time. The digital compass works great as does the radio. The thermometer is accurate if its been sitting around for a while, if its been in your pocket then it reads your body temp (obviously). I loved how small my 3120 was and this 5140 is just slightly bigger which i don't like, but its still small enough. The flashlight is nice, its comparable to LED keychain flashlights. The battery is very small which means less talk time. Thats bad in a phone thats made for the outdoors - where there's no chargers! But it still has pretty good talk time. The GPS shell is a sweet idea but too expensive for me. Phone has the standard nokia menu options and layout which i love because I dont have to relearn the phone. If you ever owned a nokia you will already know how to use this. The camera works good, the VGA is what it is. This does take video, but with only 4MB shared memory in the phone you cant take a lot. The express-on cover for this phone does not cover the camera lens, I think thats dumb, if you scratch the lens you're screwed. It gets great reception for an internal antenna, as do most nokias. Speakerphone is nice and loud, doesnt work in the car though, person on the other end hears too much noise. Will never use the push-to-talk. Email me if you have and questions
