Well-designed phone: BASIC

May 15, 2016 by MountainMike   updated May 16, 2016

The LG a340 was purchased so I could use worldwide GSM networks; Verizon (VZN) has no CDMA network outside of North America, as far as I can determine. In particular, I needed a cell in Panama (PA) for my use.

I had a generic "VeryKool" brand GSM candy bar type phone in PA, and the unprotected earphone opening must have become plugged (by pocket lint or ??), because I could not hear the people that I had called on the #@& thing! A resident gringo of PA had suggested I obtain a used Motorola, LG, or Samsung cell for PA, but another "friend" guided me into a new "Knock off" (VeryKool) generic cell. A big mistake !

This was an important PA trip and this device (VeryKool) was out of commission. My Verizon phone was also as useful as a paperweight! Everyone in PA uses a cell phone, by the way.

I looked over possible used phones using PhoneScoop.com user reviews as a guide. I picked LG as a better brand than my usual Motorola brand. The a340 is a relatively new clam shell (flip) phone. I also based my choice on my use of a CDMA-based LG that I used on the VZN network here in the US - the LG "Revere". Also used the Moto W766 on VZN. Both worked well in Northern Calif. rural area near Chico.

PROs: Loud earpiece (senior mode)
Very good battery life (4 days)
Recharges quickly (~2 hrs.)
Clear, large display (adjustable fonts)
Clear, loud speakerphone
Decent signal capture

CONs: No earphone/mic jack for true "hands free" operation
Slippery exterior - needs "rubberizing" to increase grip on phone!
Must be unlocked to operate off of AT&T network (easily done by buying an unlock code on eBay - US $2.00)

I have used this phone since Jan. 2016 - purchased used off eBay. I want a basic phone!

Basic, but does basic well

Oct 2, 2014 by hepresearch

I have had this phone for a year and two months so far, and I don't see that ending any time soon. The LG A340 for AT&T is a very basic postpaid feature phone, but what it does do it does well. It offers me an decent organizer, a basic mp3 player, a very basic camera, and a good phone. I have better cameras available, but I find myself using the one on this phone because it works just fine and it is convenient. Frankly, I am no longer a power user, and so this phone meets my needs these days.

Pro's:
- for a flip phone, the screen is adequately spacious
- for a flip phone, it is fairly thin and compact
- plays either mp3 files or wma files
- audio volume on calls is good
- for what it offers, it is a good value

Con's:
- no 3.5mm port for audio
- speaker volume for music or speakerphone is only average
- camera is only 1.3 megapixels

I have been able to install Java apps on this phone with no problems so far, though this is not something that I have done often. This is not a phone that I would recommend for someone who is looking for a powerful device, but if you just want a phone for phone calls, and maybe with a few extras for convenience, then this will probably do just fine.

Here's my LG A-340 review

Well folks, LG and AT&T have done it again. I just bought this phone today as an "Upgrade" because AT&T told me that I needed to get at least a 3G phone to replace my 2G Samsung phone because they were turning the 2G network off.
So, I saw this phone at Best Buy for $119.60 plus tax price.
I paid that amount because I am a prepaid customer and I liked the looks of this phone better than any other phone I saw.
All I can say is....."WOW". Iam really liking this phone.

Pro's:
1)Loud volume for ringer and speaker.
2)Great looks.
3)Fits my current accessories.

Con's:
Eh, got none.
