Blackberry Storm Review

Dec 8, 2008 by bookworm316

Below is my video review of the Blackberry Storm. I find it to be RIM's best blackberry to date and a very good first try on making a device like this. Without the app center fully functional it does feel incomplete. I believe when that's up and running we will really know where this stands.

A swing and a miss

Take this review with a giant grain of salt as I'm basing it on about 30 minutes of use in the store as I considered starting a line with Verizon to experience the Storm. I've been using some model of Blackberry (2 Pearls, Curve, Bold) for a couple of years now and my short time with the Storm was really frustrating. I know that while many of the annoying problems would get better after using it over time, and basically getting used to it, it still had me walking away wondering what were they thinking? I have an iPod Touch which I couldn't help but compare it to, and the Touch blew away the Storm for ease of use and the intuitive touch screen. It was frustrating to type, and navigating around the screen was maddening. I kept wanting to click down and drag, but sometimes you click and other times you drag (without clicking). Again, there is an obvious learning curve, but I'm willing to bet that if you had never experienced the iPhone nor the Storm and did sort of a "blind taste test" you would be slapping your credit card down next to the iPhone. I made some test calls on the Storm and the phone part seemed to be fine, so two stars it is...

The Storm Sucks...Don't Buy It!

Nov 27, 2008 by fastkar

I waited in line 3 hours in the cold (32 degress) to purchase the storm. It was a waste of my time. I was actually at the store a total of five hrs. I used the storm for 24 hrs. and hated it!!! It was very unresponsive, crashed all of the time, and the key board is a NIGHTMARE to type on. It cannot even come close to the iPhone. I spent soooo much time correcting letters. It would do what it wanted to do, and the screen would not turn ratio aspects until it wanted to. The device is also pretty heavy. I am a tech person and this was so crappy and poorly built. I do love Blackberry (email service, etc.), but this device is horrible!!!

I returned mine the very next day and went back to my curve. Don't buy it. Blackberry must go back to the drafting table and start over! It;s almost criminal the way they hyped it up, and marketed this crappy device and took money from customers for it.

Worst phone ever!

Nov 27, 2008 by WDCRAZY

Well, not really the worst ever but I could not resist the Comicbook guy quote. This phone may not be the worst but it sure isn't at all good.

I do not see how anyone is giving this phone a good review. All the pro sites are slamming it and the phone deserves it. You must really be a blind follower of Verizon or RIM to give this phone more than one star.

The software is so bad it should be illegal. The phone locks up as often as it works. Video quality on youtube sucks. I have missed calls waiting for the phone to stop spinning while I am trying to answer. The screen is awful for typing. The menus are confusing and slow to respond. And so many more negative things. I have had to resist taking a hammer to this thing all weekend.

DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE IF YOU MESSAGE A LOT!!!!

DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE IF YOU WATCH A LOT OF WEB VIDEOS!!!

DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE UNLESS YOU LIKE TO BE DISAPPOINTED!!!!!

DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE UNLESS YOU LIKE TO FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE BEEN RIPPED OFF!!!!!!

Pros- Pretty screen. When it works. Good phone reception. That's it.

Cons- Horrible software. Slow to switch between programs. Stalls all the time for no reason. Video Quality sucks when viewing web videos. Clicking screen is an ill conceived gimmick. The phone is heavy. The manual buttons feel really cheap. And so on...

Half baked

This phone is not quite done. It has way too many issues.

I will not compare it to iPhone because it does not deserve that honor. I will limit myself to comparing it to the Curve (which I owned) and the Bold (which I want).

Pros: Full size screen, tons of features, decent web browser, and I am digging the sure-touch screen. I am a slow typer anyway so it does not slow me down and I love how it works.

Cons: Bad software, dirt can get in around screen (lint is already driving me crazy), that spinning clock is always popping up, accelerometer is very slow, not very user friends (to those not familiar with Blackberry profucts), and the mechanical buttons seem a bit flimsy. I already know of two people that have had them fall off.

Overall I think it is a two start phone but could be a three or four star phone with a software update.

Desparately Needs a Software Upgrade

Nov 24, 2008 by WBrown415

Just purchased 2 of these phones. Beautiful screen, decent call clarity although not nearly as good as my Razor2s, speakerphone not nearly as loud as it should be.

However, phone freezes constantly. I have had to take the battery in and out several times. What an inconvenience.!! If the software upgrade doesn't come out within a few weeks, I'm taking both phones back. Blackberry released this phone way too soon. OS way too slow, too many bugs and glitches throughout all menus and applications in the phone. The phone has good potential but MAJOR SOFTWARE UPGRADE NEEDS TO COME OUT NOW!!! If not, Blackberry (RIM) will lose its stellar reputation along with Verizon.

THANK YOU Verizon!!!!

This phone is PIMP

Amazing Browser!!!
Love the SurePress technology!
Call quality is Subperb
Amazing speaker phone!

Works like a BB should!

I'm not sure what all these troll reviews are about, but don't listen to them. I like reading views too, but they should just be a gauge for you to decide if it's a phone you might enjoy.

I'm very happy with my Storm

One More Month

I still can't figure out why VZW or RIM pushed this device so early? Thank God the stores didn't get the 40-50 everyone said they would. Well, not everyone ;) So, I'm guessing all the orders pushed to Dec 15th will have new software and of course we will all have it soon enough.

With that said.

Pros- (Noticed most of my Pros are things the Iphone doesn't have)These are the features I use.

-Screen clarity ( movies look great)
-Heat touch with click ( no mistakes when texting and emailing)
-Loud speaker phone/ Music player sounds great.( get with it Apple)
-It's a Blackberry!!Enough said.
-3.2 camera, Flash, and Autofocus ( no fuzzy Iphone pics)
- Voice clarity and reception is great (Network)
-Bluetooth stereo( another thing Iphone doesn't have)
Thank you Blackberry for all the features. To many to name.

Cons- not a lot, but these are big ones

- Lag!! did notice though when you close the applications the right way the lag was considerably better.
- Internet needs work. Can't watch Tv episodes ( ABC), ESPN Video, etc.
- The Maps application is useless
- How in the hell can you stock the stores with so few? Did we not learn anything from the Voyager launch?

Overall, get this phone, issues will be fixed, No worries. Someone does owe us an apology though.

Bad business move and a poor phone

Nov 24, 2008 by Rdraper

I showed up at 8am at our local Verizon store to get three of these phones. I have a small business and wanted this phone for myself and the other two owners.

Until now we had been using the Blackberry Curve on AT&T. I was wanting to switch to Verizon specifically to get the Storm. Our contract was up with AT&T a month ago so I had been waiting for the Storm and resisting the Blackberry Bold.

Here we are one weekend later and we have one that will not turn on, one that crashes every five minutes, and mine...which just is super slow, awkward, and unreliable. We have decided to return to AT&T and just get the Bold...which we have heard good things about. I wish I had paid more attention to all the poor reviews on the cell phone web sites before buying these but they seemed so cool.

I really feel like Verizon did it's customers a disservice. They released a product that was either not ready for the market or bought a sub-par product just to be able to say they had a touch screen phone to rival the iPhone. I am not interested in excuses as to why the first run of phones is sub-par. All that matters is they sold a poor product after promoting as the next great thing. Same on you Verizon.

Pros:
None, nothing else matters if the phone's OS does not work properly. The size, shape and features would have been great if the phone actually worked.

Cons:
Freezes constantly, moves at a snails pace, jittery web scrolling, clumsy web browsing, and the click-able screen seems prone to getting dirt under it and other mechanical problems...as well as slowing down typing to a snails pace and wearing out your thumbs.

Not what I expected

Nov 23, 2008 by Windsponge

Let me start by saying I have been with Verizon for 10 years. I was dissapointed when Verizon turned down I Phone but I waited and hoped they would bring something out I liked as well.I am not sure what to think about this phone. You can see edges of glass on screen and I am sure that it will cause problems later..I cant get used to typing on this phone. Have had mutiple freeze ups.Really was hopeing for more than a phone that looked good. All friends and family on verizon so I guess I will have to keep waiting for Verizon to do right thing and give customers something worth Buying..Very Sad
