Pretty Awsome Phone

Jun 14, 2007 by cell lover 2 the maxx

I have had my 8700 for about a week and a half, almost two. This phone is great. Easy to use keypad, very large. Screen resolution is perfect. But like most people have said, seems the battery life on this is shorter than ht 8100 and the 8300 which I had. Battery isn't terrible, but could go alot further.Maybe this is a problem with the slimmer phones. I don't listen to much music on it, do some text messaging, but not much. Talk time pretty much normal, not overdone. Is anyone else noticing the shorter battery life compared to other LG's? Let me know. The back of the phone gets pretty warm in use, but I never had a problem with it getting super hot. Sound quality is great, some ringers could be louder, but I found one that's pretty loud. Overall this is a beautiful phone, with LG's great quality, sturdy, and made very well. Door on the charging port a little flimsy, hopefully won't break off. Love this phone. I say it has more pros than cons bar none!!!!!!!! Someone please write in on battery life, and also heat on back of phone. I believe this is probably due to the metal material. Verizon definitely has a winner!!!!!!!!!

Nice Phone

The LG VX 8700 is a beautiful phone with very good reception sound. The menus are very easy to use. My complaints are with opening the phone. The screen section is very thin and it is awkward to grab the section to open it and when I do this I always hit one of the buttons on the side of the phone and you get a beep. Overall, a good phone.

Super sexy but I returned it

What a great looking phone! It’s shiny in brushed stainless steel that doesn’t attract fingerprints. It has a nifty external display that's easy to read except in daylight. The UI is terrific, maybe a little slow, but so what, so am I. The interior screen is vibrant and crisp with cool animated wallpaper. The key pad has a great feel to it. There’s so much to like, but I returned it. The primary reasons being I had trouble hearing conversations and I missed too many calls, especially in noisy places like airports. I wanted to keep it; I tried hard for two weeks. I’ve always been an LG fan. I was excited about the prospects for the VX-8700. Now I’ve got a KRZR. There’s a lot about the KRZR that’s not nearly as good as the 8700, but I can hear again. Call quality is excellent. The ringers are loud. If I miss a call, it will be my fault.

Here’s my list of 8700 pros and cons:

Pros
Great look and feel, nice size, slim
Excellent build quality
Interior & exterior displays are easy to read
New exciting UI
Animated wallpapers
Terrific key pad, stylish white back-lighting
Great camera
Good battery life

Cons
Call quality not as good other reviews indicate
Battery heats up
Ringers need more volume
Vibration is week
Speaker phone – why bother, almost useless
Poor ringer selection
Separation of ringers from tones, can only set alarm with ringers
Easy to use key pad but hard to text
Charger cover won’t last

One last nit to pick…on my Moto and Blackberry, the charger prongs fold into the adapter. This is convenient and easier to carry if you travel. The VX-8700 adapter prongs don’t fold. I like folding better.

The 8700 will probably sell very well because of its great looks. It's almost a truly great cell phone. Unfortunately some of the basics were short-changed; like being alerted to incoming calls and talking to someone at the other end. While not bad, these are not up to the same standard as the rest of the phone.

GREAT PHONE!

I had a little trouble trying to get the phone to me, but overall... when I open the package it was AWSOME! I had an LG before with verizon and I was unsure to buy the new 8700, but It was worth it!
It was silver and it was my fav. color... not only that I have friends telling me they wanted the same phone because of the design and how you handle it feels like it wont break apart. So far with the graphics nohing bad to say. I just cant wait till LG releases the clone of the Iphone.... So LG... keep it up....
I get the best signals from it and I also love to text... so its another thing to get use to, but aside from that. I love verizon and I love this phone.... just gotta buy a bluetooth for it now!

great phone, but it!

Very nice phone ruined by weak vibrate mode

Jun 7, 2007 by dan01

I owned this phone for about a week until I decided to return it. For most people this will be a very good phone. Key features being a 2 megapixel camera/camcorder, bluetooth, thin and flashy design, great sound and signal strength, mp3 player, microSD memory card slot.

Pro's:
- Camera quality; the 2 megapixel camera takes very sharp, clean pictures.

- Display screen; Much improved display quality over the 8600.

- Overall look and style

Con's:
-Very weak vibrate mode

-No manner mode icon on the front LCD; not a big deal, but it's nice to be able to make sure your phone is in manner mode without flipping it open when you go into work, movie, etc.

-When setting a video that was captured with the camcorder to the wallpaper, it doesn't fill the screen. It is reduced down to size and only takes up the middle with wide white bars surrounding it. Could possibly be changed, but I wasn't able to after much effort.

The feature that ruined the phone for me and ultimately resulted in me returning the phone was the very weak vibrate mode. I have my phone on vibrate exclusively and since the phone is fairly heavy, the vibrate is extremely weak. The phone is also of very thin build, so it doesn't press against your leg in your pocket which makes the weak vibrate even harder to notice. Overall this is a very nice phone and I wanted to keep it, but after days of repeatedly missing calls as a result of the weak vibrate, it had to go.
-If you don't use the vibrate function on your phone, the ringer is plenty loud and you would be very satisfied with this phone.

Plain and Simple Cons

Jun 15, 2007 by CainXE

I want you all to know that my review is solely to pick out the things that may be a potential problem in the future. notice that i rated this phone a four out of five. it is a very good phone but these little things are the things you should look out for when considering this phone. if you would like to know the "pros" just look at everyone else's reviews (i'm sure they're there somewhere)

Cons:
~memory card under battery
~CANNOT apply "My Sounds" as ringtones anymore- I HATE THIS NEW RESTRICTION
~need an adaptor to connect a headset to it
~the case it comes with will be your phone's new best friend (always leeve it in there)
~83% aluminum outside (aluminum has a very low heat capacity... the phone gets hot fast when you talk. not a problem, but it worries you sometimes)
~Lots of fingerprints (that is another reasone why its case will be its new friend)
~Loudspeaker is on the inside of the phone (music gets muffled when you play it with the phone closed)
~you get worried if you blast your music on the phone to its max capacity (the speaker sounds like its about to bust {i keep mine at 3/7 volume})
~no external music controls except for volume
~cannot keep the phone in its soft cotton case and plug in the adapter at the same time (adapter/charge port on the side of the phone)

To sum all of the cons up. verizon took off the external music buttons, put the speaker on the inside of the phone, put the microSD memory card slot in the back, and made the phone out of steel so that its predicesor(vx8600, which btw doesnt have these problems) would still sell. In order to sell mroe ringtones they disables the "My Sounds" ringtones.

A note to any Verizon representative: if you keep putting restrictions on your phones like the "you cant send music via bluetooth btw is on every verizon phone) your company will become less popular in terms of the younger generations who will want all of these things on their phones.

Nice but not thrilled

Well I'm someone that actually uses a phone just for that - a phone. I don't really text message or take pictures that much. I am a former Motorola e815 user - which I thought was the best phone I've ever owned. I just got the 8700 yesterday and my initial opinion of the phone there are some things I really like and some things I really do NOT like.

The phone is very nice looking and built extremely well, VERY sturdy. I actually like the UI on this model as it's not the standard crap Verizon UI.

Pros:
1.UI
2.Design & "wow" factor
3.Non-crippled Bluetooth (compared to e815)
4.Picture quality

Cons:
1.Speaker phone can ONLY be turned on during a call and will not stay on after you hang up; this is absolutely horrible as I use speakerphone a lot on the road
2. Speakerphone volume
3. Battery door
4. Cannot change the ring style with side buttons (now I have to open the phone to put the phone in vibrate mode)

Not So Enthused

It must be me. I don't love this phone. In fact, I don't much like it. The door to the adapter must have been developed by a sadist. I have dug, prodded, pleaded, and still it remains closed. I've finally resorted to small, sharp objects, but for obvious reasons that's neither desirable nor always available.

Sure, the phone has a wonderful display (date, time, etc), but you can only see it if the phone is open. The longest it can be made visible on a closed phone is 30 seconds. After that, the screen goes dark and you can't tell whether the phone is still on or whether, heaven forbid, the battery has died and the phone is off.

I also don't like the fact that you have to open the phone in order to see if it is "noise" or "vibrate" mode. For professionals going in and out of meetings, this is mildly annoying.

My biggest complaint is the voice activated command capability, which cannot be turned off. If your blue tooth is nearby and you touch the side of the 8700 phone, it will make a call. To whom, you might ask? The phone will decide. From the surrounding noise the phone will decide whom to call (it might redial the last number or it might make a selection from your contacts list) and will initiate a call. Of course, you won't know this (for instance if the phone is in your purse and you bumped it when rummaging for something else). So far, I've awakended three friends and had one believing I'd been kidnapped when my phone made an unwanted call late at night. I've apologized to each of them, but unless you deactivate the blue tooth, there's no way to prevent it from happening again. And again. And again. I'm sure there are reasons why random, unplanned phone calls are desirable, but for the life of me I sure can't figure out what those reasons are.

I've got nineteen months to go before I can rid myself of this phone. I can't wait.

This phone is the shiz!

Apr 12, 2007 by GIREVIKS

It has stainless steel construction so I wont rub off the paint and scatches wont be very noticeable. Reception is up to snuff meaning it wont work any miracles if Verizons network sucks in your area but if theres a signal out there the phone will find it. The only con for me is the funky outer display, its cool looking but not as functional as some other lg offerings. Oh Yeah and the phone looks beautiful.

Form over function

Jun 13, 2007 by welcher

Carrier: Verizon

After about 3 weeks with this phone after the New Every 2 plan, I've come to the conclusion that the 8700 sacrifices too much function for form.

Some disclaimers about my usage: I text quite a bit throughout the day, often with pics (at least a couple per day), talk for anywhere from 30 to 75 minutes on the phone per day, and I am on the go and usually away from charging availability for about 18 hours a day.

What I've found:

Pros :
* Small unit
* Brushed steel is solid & classy
* Limitations of outter screen not so bad
* Beautiful large inner screen
* Takes nice, clear pics & videos

Cons :
* Horrendous battery duration (even if left in Power Save mode) if you use your phone for more than 10 minutes of calls in a day.
* Buttons are too small for large thumbs and virtually indistinguishable from each other, resulting in frequent pressing of wrong or multiple buttons (often sending texts before they're ready).
* Phone frequently resets when attempting to send pic messages (although this problem seems to have subsided some since I started saving pics to the memory card).
* Rear of phone gets extremely hot when in use for a few mintues. Not sure if this causes any other problems, but it can't be good.

This list of cons may look short (these are just the major flaws), but the inconvenience they each have caused me is enormous. The phone completely died prematurely on me the other night, setting forth an unbearable chain of events including being stranded downtown with all my work materials being locked in someone else's house. I need a phone that can stay awake as long as I can under my normal usage circumstances. Sure, I have the coolest looking phone in the subway car, but that's the lowest of my priorities.
