Overall good phone, i've got some gripes tho

Jun 28, 2007 by jungirl

got this phone the first day it hit verizon stores. there are a lot of things i really like about it, but just going to list some of the con's b/c they really irk me. i agree with a lot of the positive reviews posted (look, etc), i feel it's waste of time to re-list them. so here are my con's:

* WOW. what genius put the "clear" button near the "send" button? this is quite possibly my biggest frustration with this phone. i text a LOT, and i have countless number of times, accidentally sent an incomplete text message when i was just trying to delete a letter. this prompts a quick "end", and then having to re-type the whole message or going into sent and forwarding the old un-sent message to the same person and erasing the "FWD:" in the front of the new message.

* i love the finish, but it is NOT smudge proof, or finger print free. maybe it fares better than the glass casings of the krazr and maxx, but it still definitely picks them up. i find myself wiping down my phone all the time, b/c the prints and smudges really aesthetically mess up the beautiful finish.

* again, this finish is NOT scratch proof. i have tons of micro-scratches especially on the back.

* again, the finish! it's like a love hate relationship. this is seriously the SLIPPERIEST finish ever. and i'm not a clumsy person, i swear. i dropped my last phone in the 2 years i owned it about a total of 5 times. this phone i dropped about 20 times in the first month. i get nervous taking it out near the edge of the subway platform.

* no flash for camera. does anyone know how the night mode works? so far it hasn't done much for me.

* battery life is AWFUL. i am considering sacrificing the sleek profile for the extended battery. has anyone bought this yet? any thoughts?

* when on the phone or mid text, i can't see what time it is. this is a BIG one for me. is there any way to change the pretty trip screen on the front lcd to instead just tell me the time?

otherwise, like it, lots of compliments.

Very Good Phone

I've had this phone for 2 days now. I managed to get an awesome deal in a local Verizon store. They accidentally subtracted my new-every-two credit from the "new 2 year agreement" price ($229) instead of the full phone price ($379). Add to that the $50 mail in rebate, and I got the phone for about $80. :)

My previous phone was the highly rated Audiovox CDM-9900. I was drawn to the 8700 due to its look, the fact the screen resolution is the same as my 9900, and the good ratings on PhoneScoop.

So far, so good. The phone is sleek. The keypad is comfortable. The UI is OK, and far better than most standard Verizon-UIs. (Although still not as good as the highly refined UI on my 9900.)

There are a few problems. First, the ear piece volume seems low to me. It might be the shape of the hole that exposes the speaker. At any rate, it can be hard to hear people unless you press the phone to your head fairly tightly.

Parts of the UI are kinda hidden by default. Going to the main menu doesn't expose any of the pictures, music, wallpapers, photos, etc that you have. Instead, you must associate a shortcut key (up/down/left/right on the D pad) to one of these items to get to them.

So far the battery life and reception have been excellent. In fact, the reception has been *much* better than my 9900. The poor reception on the 9900 was one of the biggest reason I wanted a new phone.

So, to summarize:

Pros:
Very sleek and attractive.
Excellent internal screen. (320x240)
Good camera. (2 megapixel)
Good keypad.
Pretty good UI.
Excellent reception.
Good battery life.

Cons:
Low ear piece volume.
No ring then vibrate. (Either or, or both.)

If I had paid $230 for the phone, I would probably return it. But it's definitely worth $80, and I would go as high as $130.

Happy with purchase

I upgraded from an LG4500 to the LG8700 3 days ago. I am very pleased however, I have yet to use the music options.

I can write about the basics:

LG-8700 PROS:
1. stylish exterior design;
2. great camera;
3. easy navigation;
4. large/clear screen.

LG-8700 CONS:
1. exterior/interior displays display poorly in direct sunlight;
2. charger is on the side making it difficult to talk while charging;
3. charger "door" will most likely break off soon;
4. limited selection of rings.

Very good phone

I cant give a phone a 5 because nothing is perfect, but this phone is great. I have not tried the bluetooth file transfer or anything like that, but coming from Cingular and a V551 the call quality is much better and the signal is also. I got the case becasue it just seems that the metal will scratch easy but the case is UGLY UGLY UGLY. I am getting used to verizon's UI even though it is themed after 3 days of use I haven't messed with it enough.
Pro's
Call Quality
Battery: (Seems to last at least 2 days)
Camera: is pretty good (I played with the MAXX and this seems better)
Style: Metal is great(not a fingerprint magnet but make sure you don't touch with greasy hands)
Cons
Verizon UI (I wanna be able to push down to show my contacts not my calendar but that is my only beef)

Highly recommend this phone. It does every thing very well and it's super nice looking and light. It's so light actually that I can actually carry this phone in my pocket without any annoying bulge plus I don't need the belt clip! The brushed metal body is impressive. It's sturdy but yet sleek and shiny but does not leave fingerprint smudges.

I agree. Great phone!

I am by far, enjoying this phone the best, of any LGs that I have previously used. I've also had a Motorola in the past, but I'm glad that I returned to using an LG. At this time, I have no complaints, and enjoy using it. I like the fact, that it's such a small, sleek little phone. I think it's another hit for the VX Series. Thank you, LG!

Overall Great Verizon Phone!

May 2, 2007 by M.J.H.

I have owned pretty much every Verizon phone on the market from the VX9400, the VX8600, the VX8300, VX8100, VX7000, all the way down the line. And let me say that I am impressed with the VX8700.

POSITIVES:
- great look, although a little too similar to the razor, IMO
- battery life seems solid so far
- great camera, and 30-second movies that you can actually send, LOVE this
- exterior display even though you can't read the texts is still catchy/different
- accounce + ring, or in other words it will announce who is calling/texting

NEGATIVES:
- keypad is way too much like the razor, almost annoyingly so
- exterior display looks a little cheap, especially compared to the VX8600

disappointed

The only good thing about this phone is the size.
Everything else is horrible. I only looked at LG phones because of the track record and satisfaction rating they carry. I have had great luck...until now.

Cons: Ringer can't be set high enough to hear
(it has been in my pocket and i have missed a call)
Vibrate is minimal (again, have missed a call while in my pocket)
Battery life is weak, weak, weak
Video resolution stinks
Takes fingerprints and smudges easily (it never looks good)
No kind of cover for the camera lens (after one week, i don't get good pictures)
This is all I wish to say, the above things are the very reason I use a phone
Buy something else, I've used better Trac phones.

VANITY is not always the best.

This is a really nice looking phone, and thanks to the awesome network it's under, the reception and voice quality could not be any better.

I just got a new account with Verizon, and I made sure that all the phones that I got (3) were top notch, but unlike the new LG8550 and my MotoMAXXve, I have been noticing a couple of things that I'm disliking, and my wife also pointed other things out.

PROS

1. Awesome digital camera.
2. Overall look seems very exotic.
3. Voice quality is awesome.
4. Is not just a man phone, but it could be a lady phone for someone confident.

CONS

1. Metal Casing nice, but it overheats when is charging and during long usage during calls.
2. Exotic look yes due to outside display and medal casing, but it looks too much like the nasty original RAZR when open almost like a copy - I know LG does not have to lower them selves to make sells.
3. The memory card slot is inside where the battery is like the LG CU500. Very annoying when you need to add music or files.
3. No dedicated music buttons.

This phone may have an exotic look to it, and a 2 mega pixel camera, but other then that, is a very basic phone. There were a couple of things that were left out specially for a phone that is supposed to be an update to the LG VX8600, IMO the 8600 other then the Camera, is the better phone.
