I work for Cingular and recently shopped around for a new phone, since my Sony Ericsson w600i would render the keys unusable once in a while and was acting up otherwise.
After some research I decided to order the w710i unlocked from the online retailer out west. After I got it, my initial impression with the phone was really favorable until after I placed the call on the loud speaker.. What a disappointment! My old w600i would have had a much better loudspeaker for both, phone conversation and music. I absolutely love Sony Ericsson products and feel that they have excelled in every possible aspect of performance on w710i if not for the loudspeaker, which is a shortfall (Why, Sony??, Why??).. Its very mediocre..Also, I noted that the radio reception has again more static in it???!! The overall reception is excellent. I get the signal most anywhere. This phone is of lot better quality compared to Nokia products I used to swear by back in a days. Having said that, I would still recommend this phone if you don't quite care about the volume levels, which I think, just won't suffice for me. I'll probably go back to W600i...

Pros:
Excellent reception
MP3 player
Ease of use
512 Mb of memory included
Superbright screen
Feature rich (radio, games,entertainment, etc.)
Bluetooth/InfraRed
battery life
etc, etc.

Cons:
No autofocus on the camera
Mediocre loudspeaker
Noisy radio reception
Long start-up time (power up/down)

Sony Ericsson z710i

I was looking around for a cheaper alternative to the Sony Ericsson w710i and found that its brother (the z710i) is almost identical in features and is $60 cheaper at around $265 on ebay.

Sony Ericsson Official product page for the z710i
http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=us&lc=en&ver= ...

Here are the features I think everyone wants to see...

*Size
- 88 x 48 x 24.5 mm
- 3.4 x 1.9 x 1 inches
*Quad band GSM +EDGE
*2.0 megapixel camera
*Music tones (MP3/AAC) with Media player
*Bluetooth
*FM Radio
*Memory Stick Micro (M2)
*Talk time - 10 hours
*Standby - 350 hours

A quick google search came up with a very informative review of the phone with plenty of pictures included.

This phone is a complete steal imo and the only things you are losing from the more expensive w710i is slight design (case and outside screen color), headphones, armstrap and you end up with a smaller memory card (64mb vs 512mb). I am not completly sure but I also think there is no calorie counter in the z710i. As far as the memory card issue you can newegg a 512mb card for around $35.

The short story here is that if you like the w710i but are turned off by the looks of it or the price then the z710i is an incredibly similar and attractive alternative. I ordered one yesterday and when it arrives later this week I will post my thoughts. Hope this helps anyone trying to make a decision since I could not find much information on the phone around the net. -Rob

Shame T-Mobile has no contract with Sony-Ericsson. Very good phones but they decided to concentrate on Nokia, Motorola, and Samsung. Fido in Canada carries this phone. This is a decent unlocked GSM Sony-Ericsson for the money.

good sony but not the best

This sony is a great phone. i'm a t-mobile rep and i love sony ericson phones. i've had this phone for a week now and i love this phone. the walkman feature is the main reason i got this one. mp3s sound super crisp and clear. it puts any other mp3 phone to shame in this category, seriously. it has a 2 megapixel camera that is ok. reason saying this is it doesnt always come out focused. ive found that when it does get a clear shot it looks real good though. the phone is a nice fit in the palm and is not too big. it doesnt have a external color screen but thats ok cuz u can see it in all lights. the music controls are simply superb. the main screen is real bright, could have been qvga but thats ok too. my reception with this phone is great( tampa,fl area) i have signal almost all the time and i get signal in places where i normally wouldnt. calls are great sounding and ive never heard a complaint yet from the other end. the features it has is great to like pedometer. it counts all your steps through out the day. mainly this phone is nearly perfect. i would have given it a 5 but the camera isnt up to sony usual great cameras. but other than that get this phone . it comes with everything in the box a 512mb card, software, data cable, a breakaway holster, meaning instead of breaki ng off at the clip and being screwed it simply will pop off instead of breaking, armband for jogging and more, good job sony just rework the camera the way you did before.

Z710i is so nice

this is the 2nd SE after T637
I had happy experience with it using as phone and modem
purchased in Hong Kong, this phone supports Trad Chinese and English
standby screen: pretty bright and beautiful, 176x208 is barely same as W810, the outer screen can be set always on to display clock without opening it, but the outer screen is mono color, it may be plus to view outdoors
voice: this is fine, but I just used it for 2 days, that I have to make more calls to judge
operation: similar SE, since I used T637, that the operation is still similar, but there's a task/shortcut button on the top right of numeric pad, a dedicated net button on the top left, messaging/email button on the bottom left, these buttons are dedicated for easy access, there're 4 more buttons for prev/freq up, next/freq down, play/pause/radio on, outer screen on buttons; there's a keylock switch, this is pretty good to prevent mis-operation
reception: very good with New World Mobility (not going back to states), but I found the bar above the battery door is pretty sensitive to touch, probable where the antenna is
bt: it has a lot of bt functions, works perfectly with Bluesoleil, but I don't have chance to test DUN because I currently don't have unlimited GPRS here, but sync works perfectly with Outlook just through Bluesoleil, it also supports tri-mode headset (HSP/HSP/hifi)
size: the phone looks small, but thick (2x more thickness than nokia E50)
battery time: I have just had the phone for 2 days, no comment this time
cam: though it doesn't have auto-focus, it works pretty well, at least better than 6270
Z710i is just same price as W300i, W710i is almost $100 more, I'd go for stripped down ver, and get an 1MB M2
plus:
reception
voice quality
bt function
keylock switch
screens (main and outer)
cam
3 dedicated buttons
minus:
thickness
memory (only 10MB, and M2, which is hard to find and no card reader supports it)
no default USB mode (always ask when plugging in, this is annoying)

Can it not be exclusive!!!

This phone is better then the dull looking one piece W810i and it does more. Though I like sister phone Z710i more. Why, why can't Cingular be smart in choosing phone for enthusiastic customers out there. Do not forget, like everything that is cool, it is only exclusive to Europe and Asia but here in the U.S. the FCC and what ever government censor will limit it to the states. I guess the U.S. must still stay in the stone age with phones.
